I received an email from Barbara, asking if could help her find her husband’s ring lost in a yard a year ago. He had been throwing something to his grandkids when the ring flew off of his finger, and was gone. They never saw it again. I did not think it would be a problem as long as it was still there. She wanted to do the search on his birthday, and give the ring back to him as a present to surprise him. The ring was custom made, and he wore it as a symbol of his receiving his Black Belt as a youth, so it had great meaning and sentimental value to him.

When I got to the property, Barbara took me to the yard which was not very big, and I could see was very well manicured. There was not a blade of grass out of place, nor a leaf anywhere on the ground. I thought to myself that if it looked like this the day the ring was lost, how could they not see it, but began my search anyway. I got a good signal, and turned to the owner of the property (the grandkids father), and let him know that I would have to dig a small hole, which he was not pleased to hear, but gave me the go ahead. I dug the hole only to find a buried wire, which made him very nervous about me digging any more holes. He pointed me to another part of the yard that he remembered searching for the ring at the time it was lost. I conducted my search in that area, and got another good signal about 2 inches deep. I let him know that to recover this signal, I would have to dig again, he did not want me to, and I understood his worry, but let him and Barbara know, that the only way to find out if we had found the ring or not was to dig the signal, because I did not want to damage the ring. He finally relented, and I dug. When I flipped the plug of grass and dirt over, there in the dirt was the band of a yellow gold ring shinning in the sunlight. I pulled the ring and gave it to Barbara, needless to say, she was very happy to know that she was going to be able to surprise her husband with a wonderful birthday gift; truly a great day!

Merry had realized that her custom gold ring was missing while spending the afternoon on one of the small coves in Laguna Beach, CA. She had been playing with her dog on the upper beach and also throwing a frisbee lower on the beach near the surf line.

After a couple hours searching the dry sand with no success, she was able to contact me using a google search. I was able to meet her on the beach before she had to leave.  Merry told me that this was a very special ring that was given to her years ago, celebrating a very important day in her life. It worried her because she had not felt the ring leave her finger and it was a large search area.

After hearing her story, I felt the most likely place to start was where she had spent the most time. The area where she was throwing the frisbee seemed the best place to lose a ring, that would be next. The area had large rocks and driftwood that could be challenging.

We were lucky to start in the right location and it only took a few minutes swing my detector coil over a sting solid signal. One scoop about 6 inches deep and a beautiful unique custom gold ring was clanking in the bottom of my scoop.

Merry was standing just a few feet from me. She heard the heavy metal banging in my scoop. I held the scoop close enough for her to see her precious ring inside. An instantly she  screamed with joy and a big smile.

It was a great search that went well. With all the obstacles and a large search area it could been much more difficult. Every search is an adventure.

Gold Ring Lost in Sea at Russell, Bay of Islands – Found!

  • from Paihia (New Zealand)

John was out swimming off Long Beach at Russell in the Bay of Islands, and realising he’d forgotten to leave his gold wedding band behind took it off and dropped it inside his wetsuit for security.  All went to plan, until, at the end of his swim and while wading ashore he unzipped the wetsuit and folded it down.  The inevitable happened, however it wasn’t until he was back at the car and out of the wetsuit he remembered the now absent ring.

He spent some time looking for his treasured gold ring in the grass in the carpark and retraced his steps up and down the beach without luck.

I came into the story three days later and made the journey over to hopefully reunite John with his lost ring.

John was up to getting wet again, so I asked him to take one of my marker floats out and drop it at his best guess for the start point.

Starting initially with a spiral search pattern in the immediate area out to 5m, I then ran parallel sweeps back into the beach in the direction of his travel back to the car – pausing to brace into the occasional larger breaking waves.

Once in the shallows, I took a short break to remove the wetsuit and switch to dry gear for the remainder of the beach, continuing the overlapping parallel sweeps back to the car – With no luck.

I always aim to run at 90-95% probability of detection, and the fact I hadn’t found it irritated me. I explained to John that the chances of missing it were slim, so there was a possibility it had fallen out on the hard sand or grass and been picked up. The search corridor marked out allowed for plenty of space either side of his track, so I was confident it wasn’t there.

John accepted the loss, we shook hands and he headed on his way home.

After packing the gear away, I grabbed a coffee from the nearby vendor and sat in the car looking at the beach with the search grid in the sand… I wasn’t happy about something, but couldn’t pin it down.  I needed to have another go on the “Assume Nothing, Believe No-One and Confirm Everything” principle.

What if John hadn’t come in on the direct line he thought he had?  Watching the swimmers and kids splashing around for a few minutes, I saw there was a subtle longshore drift dragging them along the beach. I decided to go back in and extend the search corridor.

Didn’t bother with the wetsuit this time, just grabbed the scoop and detector and headed back to the edge of the previous search area and started adding another 10m to it in the direction of the current.

After maybe 15 minutes, I got that solid gold ‘thud’ in the phones, and the scoop picked it up first time.

I headed back to the car and not having Johns number, phoned his wife to give the good news and ask her to get John to turn around and come back.  He was a very happy chap when I dropped the ring in his hand.

Sokni and her family will be moving into a new home. She was worried that there may be nails or sharp metal objects in the backyard where her young children would be playing. She called me asking if I could use my metal detector to remove possible dangerous metal objects.

I asked if she had any reason that there were such objects in the yard. She told me that she just had a feeling that there might be metal trash because the house was about 30 years old. ‘We agreed to meet her the next day figuring that this would be a quick little search that would give Sokni peace of mind.

After scanning the first 20 feet of lawn, I was surprised to find several sharp screws, nails and a old razor blade. The general area was loaded with ferrous and non ferrous signals near the surface. This was a challenge to me and a good chance to dig all metals. Normally I’m just searching for precious metals.

This search took several sessions to complete the project and I was able to spread it out over a couple 3 hour searches. The photos show what was in the backyard. I couldn’t believe how many sharp items were in that small yard.

Uncovering Family Secrets: The Quest for Buried Treasure In Lancaster CA

Richard’s call brought forth a tale of buried treasure—silver coins hidden by his great-grandfather decades ago and whispered to his grandmother before his passing. Who could resist the allure of hunting for such riches? With excitement brewing, we set a date for exploration.

Accompanied by Richard’s grandmother, we ventured onto the property, anticipation palpable in the air. Armed with my trusty Minelab Equinox, I prepared to unearth the hidden treasure. Uncertain of the coins’ container, I focused on detecting solid tones, regardless of their ID numbers.

As the hunt unfolded, approximately 45 minutes in, a distinct tone—a solid 16—echoed through my detector. Though it didn’t sound like silver, I decided to dig deeper. At a depth of about 10 inches, my shovel hit metal—a pipe. Upon extraction, the rusty pipe revealed its bounty—a trove of silver coins cascading forth. It was a moment of sheer astonishment as we beheld hundreds of ancient silver coins—Grandpa’s long-lost stash.

Laura was at Huntington State Beach with her family all day Sunday. She believed that her Rose Gold Diamond engagement ring fell in the sand when she removed her sweater from her beach bag. Late Wednesday night she found TheRingFinders website while researching metal detectors on line.

It was almost midnight when she sent me an email. She was asking if I could help her. It was 9 am Thursday morning when I read and replied to her email, asking her to call me ASAP. Emails are nice but it was another couple hours till we were able to set up a meeting on the beach.

We were lucky that it wasn’t Huntington City Beach which has very efficient beach sifting equipment. Also this time of year there is always a chance that recreational detectorist may have found it, not knowing who to return it to.

As we walked towards the fire pits where the ring was lost. I tried not to tell Laura about the negative possibilities that could hamper our search. Laura showed me the first of two places it could be. Setting up my detector, I took a couple practice swings. Beginning my grid I got nice solid signal that didn’t quite sound like gold. After scooping the target, I could see the rose gold engagement ring in the scoop. Rose gold is a composite of metals that gives a little different ID reading than other precious metals.

Laura lit up like a light when she saw it in the scoop. She gave me a big smile for the photo as you can see. We walked back to our cars and she was full of joy all the way there. She had four miserable days worrying that her ring was gone forever. Now the ring was back where it belongs. It was definitely a pleasure to help her, it never gets old doing this. Thanks for TheRingFinders website and the internet.

Lost Rings at Night! – Pensacola Beach – FOUND!

  • from Orange Beach (Alabama, United States)

Well, I’m not sure if this counts as 2 rings or more but I am sure that Kelly and Bill are absolutely thrilled that I was able to put them back on her hands where they belong. Kelly and Bill have been married for 25 years and have been down vacationing from Michigan. Kelly folded her rings into her swimsuit early in the day for safekeeping and forgot they were there when she got up later to meet her sister. You can imagine her shock when she realized they were gone that evening. Kelly went ahead and called me even though it was nighttime and I’m glad she didn’t wait. Bill had gone out with a sand flea rake for fishing and combed the area already to no avail. I told him later that he had actually just made the rings go deeper and deeper every time he disturbed the sand because of the density of gold. Luckily for Kelly and Bill, I have a wonderful wife and even though we were at dinner 30 minutes away, she offered to ride with me and we immediately went home and grabbed my gear. I met Bill in the parking lot and he walked me down to the area he thought they had lost them. I could see all of the rake marks and I told Bill I would start my search there and then fan out if needed. I absolutely love night searches on the beach. It’s nice and cool and you can hear the waves over the hum of the machine in my headphones. You can enjoy the stars without bumping into sunbathers and it’s just a great time to enjoy what I do. I also knew that I had a very anxious couple waiting on the outcome so I was very glad that as I made my first pass I heard a faint gold sound. I was a little surprised at how deep it was even though I knew Bill had thoroughly raked the area. When my first gentle scoop to five inches came back empty I thought to myself that they were very lucky they called me and I had the machine that I was using. The second scoop was the charm and I reached down and dug the first ring out of the scoop to make sure I didn’t scratch it. When I saw that I had them both in the scoop, I smiled and handed them to Bill. With a shaky hand, he asked me to hold the light and he took a picture and sent it to Kelly in the room so she could stop worrying immediately. We walked back up and told my wife that I was already done in less than 10 minutes and Bill asked us both to come up and meet Kelly. When we walked in the door I was quickly reminded why I do this. Bill and Kelly both got choked up remembering how much those rings had been a part of over the last 25 years. I was glad that my wife got to witness that and I hope Bill and Kelly have many, many more happy years together. 👍😃
