Going Out on a Limb…..

 

 

….wasn’t to reach the better fruit so to speak, but rather to trim some of the dead limbs off the tree. As it was getting dark John decided to reach out and cut one more then call it quits for the day. Back inside the house he realized his ring was missing. Was it lost near the tree? or somewhere else on the property as he was working on various projects? I quickly turned on my MXT metal detector and going out on my own limb I chose to grid search the area by the tree. Reaching out as far as I could with each sweep of the metal detector coil, I finally got a good signal. Using my pin-pointer I probed down into the grass and reaching thru I felt a piece of fruit in the form of a gold ring! John couldn’t believe that it was there and was super happy that going out on this limb produced great rewards!

150th Ring Return on Cape Cod – Found on Chatham Lighthouse Beach

Emmie was enjoying her second day vacationing on beautiful Cape Cod. The sun was bright, the wind was light, and the temperature just right for a perfect day on the beach. Wanting to keep her wedding band clean and safe while she applied sunscreen protection she removed the ring and placed it in her pant’s pocket. She removed the pants and placed them into the safety of a beach wagon while she sun bathed. When it came time to put the pants back on…the ring was not in the secure pocket or wagon.

A call to J&E Enterprise to rent a detector was placed. Eleanor of J&E advised Emmie it would be better to have an experienced detectorist do the search and gave Emmie my phone number. Within the hour I was on the beach and in a search mode. I detected the area parallel to the water and then perpendicular with not a signal from the ring. I then searched in a diagonal pattern. Again, no signal. Another diagonal perpendicular to the first was about 50% complete when I heard an iffy signal. A signal, the result caused by a beach chair in close proximity to another signal. I reduced my detector’s sensitivity and interpreted its visual display as a target of interest and decided to take a scoop. From under a piece of seaweed a brilliant glimmer could be seen as a ring of diamonds slipped into the scoop.

That was the end to my searching and the beginning of the ring return. I kept the ring in the scoop as I love to see the emotions of the owner as they remove it and place it back on the finger where it belongs. Emmie had gone to the car and was on her way back. That gave her “friends” and husband time to conjure up a plan for the return. I would be handing out cards to those around, all except one for Emmie. I had a special Thank You card for her. This return was a special moment for both of us. For Emmie as she was to be reunited with her wedding band of two years and for me because it was my 150th return since joining TheRingFinders in 2011. Emmie’s card had a Thank You note on the reverse side and a Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) token made by another metal detectorist, Jim Wirth. A more perfect return I could not have hoped for on my 150th return.

Many photos were taken, thanks were given and received. Of course a few stories of past returns kept everyone’s concepts of metal detecting intriguing. Everyone could now leave the beach in a joyful spirit. The beach goers headed off to a lobster feast and I to a peaceful ride home. I took the time to reminisce over the past 12 years of putting smiles on the face of so many and how fortunate I am to have done so. What a perfect way to live in vacation land and enjoy retirement. Thanks to all those who have trusted in me. Yes, it really has been my pleasure to help when one needed my expertise the most. Again; Thank You all.

Gold earring lost in Sausalito, CA…Found!!!

A very kind Susan contacted me on Memorial Day to assist in searching for her gold clip-on hoop earring lost at the Cavallo Point Lodge in beautiful Sausalito, CA.  She was spending the weekend there with her daughter and while out for a walk she felt her hair tugging at the earring. Just like that, she attempted to clear her hair from the earring and the rest was a blur.  The earring she had owned for 30 plus years and had been present for all the major events of her adult life was missing.  The mother and daughter duo spent hours searching for the lost gold hoop to no avail and a huge cloud loomed over the trip.

Susan had used a metal detectorist to assist locating a missing ring while on vacation at the beaches of the East Coast. She sought out a last ditch effort to recover the earring when she reached out to my friend and fellow TheRingFiners.com  member Jes Muse.  Jes was kind enough to pass along my information to Susan, who text me right away and the next afternoon I’d make the hour and a half drive to Cavallo Point to meet with her and perform the search.  Susan reenacted the events of the night and the path she took.  She also established an appropriate search area, which was fairly small and our probability of the detection was pretty good. I spend 30 minutes or less metal detecting and visually observing the search area.

After searching the area, I could say with full confidence that the earring was not there.  At that point, she thanked me for my efforts and I could tell she was quite disappointed.  After she left, I couldn’t help but wonder that if I walked further along her route, what I could find find.  If there was a possibility that the lost earring event may have taken place further than originally thought and that was why the initial  search turned up nothing, I wanted to know.  As I walked further along the route, there laying in the road was the gold clip-on earring we had both sought out.  We had made the recovery!!!

Early in the search, Susan had stated that she had a dream that we located the missing item.  I remembered that statement when I called her to return to the Cavallo Point Lodge to collect her belongings.  She was ecstatic when I turned over the once lost item and I hope in some way it made the grey cloud over the Mother and Daughter trip depart.  Best of wishes Susan!

Lost Gold Ring w/Gemstone Found in Farmington Hills Michigan

Been There…..Dug That…..

….Of all the volleyball court finds I have made, this one was the same, I grid searched the area with my MXT metal detector, got a good signal and there the ring was just a couple inches beneath the sand. What made it interesting was that Praveen’s wife took the children to the court just to sit and play in the sand…no volleyball, and as she got up to brush off the sand, her beautiful wedding ring flew off. Naturally worried as to where it went, he was thrilled, and relief came over his face knowing that the ring had just temporarily been hiding….Yep, and I really dug that!

Lost Engagement Ring FOUND in Essex, Maryland!

I received a call from Teresa early this morning (5/30/2023) stating she lost her engagement ring close to her house. I offered to come out later in the week as I did not have my equipment with me nor was I home. She asked if there was any way possible that I could come out today. I could hear it in her voice she was frantic as she was concerned that where she lost it was a heavy foot traffic area and that someone else may find it. I was able to change up my schedule for the day and we met midafternoon. Teresa was very confident in the area that she lost it, so I immediately got to work. Due to the high amount of interference in the area, I needed to fine tune my equipment to eliminate false signals. Shortly thereafter, I was able to call Teresa over to show her what I found. She immediately started crying tears of joy! I’m glad I was able to return this ring to its thankful owner. If you find yourself in a situation like or similar to Teresa, please don’t hesitate to contact me! The quicker I get involved, the greater are the chances of a successful recovery!

Lost and found gold wedding band in Brighton Ontario

Received a text from Richard today about him having lost his gold wedding band in their backyard while doing some spring cleaning. The good news is that he saw the ring flying off his finger as he was moving a log. The bad news was that he mowed the tall grass in hope of better seeing the ring. Everything turn out fine as the ring was found in less than a minute. Another happy camper. Life is good.

Jennifer’s Ring

Recent graduate Jennifer was home from college, putting up a string of outdoor holiday lights when she felt her class ring slip off. She immediately searched the tall grass but couldn’t find the ring. She took the string of lights and made a ten-foot circle around the area and called me.

Allison called me about a very special lost wedding band that belonged to her mother.  She was tossing a football to her children while on the beach in Ocean City, NJ, when the ring slipped off and fell in the sand. We met shortly after her call, and she showed me the area where she threw the ball. It wasn’t long before the ring was found with the metal detector and close to her heart again!

*** Diego called asking if I could find a ring in the water. He and his family were in Long Beach at a park called Colorado Lagoon. He had waded out in the lagoon waist deep diving head first in the water. He knew that was when his ring came off his finger.

I asked him to mark the spot above the high tide line and take a couple photos. Tide was rising and it may be too deep by the time I get there. He wasn’t sure the whole family could stand by as they were just about ready to leave. 

I made the 18 mile drive catching them still at the site of the loss. Diego was awfully upset. I calmed him down saying the most important part of the search is done. We know he felt the ring come off his finger and I have the exact location. It may be deeper that I can get today but tomorrow morning we have a very low tide. It’s a back bay with no waves. The ring isn’t going anywhere.. 

I did a thorough grid out to neck deep with no success. There wasn’t very many bottle caps or trash metal targets, which is a good thing. It was looking like a return search the next low tide. He was insistent that it was at least waist deep. Completing all the water grid before calling it a day, I got a strong signal in knee deep water. Boom! Tungsten Carbide ring that was definitely Diego’s ring.. Another Very Happy guy. I knew that this meant the world to him because he was speechless. A perfect day, when we do these searches we never know what we will run into.

Don’t waste time contact me now.. Timing is important, especially if the loss is in a public location.
