Lost Ring Recovered Western Wisconsin.

I received an email wondering if I could go up to a western Wisconsin lake and see if I could recover a lost ring. It was about 14o miles away. Wanting to ensure a successful recovery on the first trip we waited until both could meet on site to confirm the location of where it was lost.  The water in the lake is getting very cold around 36 degrees F. so waders were going to have to be used.  I was told that the ring came off while uncovering a boat. The ring slipped off and went into the lake near the end of the dock in about 4 feet of water. The lake levels can be lowered for the winter by conservation officials and was down about a foot from summer levels. This putting the search area in around 3 -4 feet of water.   This was about the maximum depth  that I could go before water would come over the waders and my hand would be submerged holding on to the metal detector.  I also use an aluminum scoop to recover targets to prevent from having to get wet this time of year. The search area was about a 15′ x 10′ area. Several attempts were made at finding the ring by the owner and friends and neighbor. They tried snorkeling, raking and tried a metal detector with no luck. I have in the past had searchers looking for lost items using rakes end up moving the rings to a new location, which expands the search area.   I started out with my primary search. A primary search is an initial search in the area of the highest degree of likelihood. It is usually just seeing how many targets are out in the location and if anything just screams hear I am.  The lost ring was platinum with some diamonds.  So you look for somewhat shallow targets, anything deeper then 4″ is kind of ruled out.  The bottom of lakes if real sandy might get pushed down by searchers stepping on it but in this case there was a hardpan layer about 2″ below the bottom sand so it was going to be shallow. I did pick up several targets that were in the range of the ring but turned out to be pop tops/ pull tabs, bottle caps and other misc. junk targets. After searching for 15 – 20 minutes I got a hit on pretty good signal but not jumping out, I had set my scoop down on the dock which was about 6-8′ away. When hitting that target I did not want to take my eye off the target location but I needed to go grab the scoop. Its not hard to loose the target by waves pushing you or currents in rivers. I identified a small white pebble on the bottom that I could come back to. I grabbed the scoop and found the white stone. took a scoop and missed the target, took and second scoop and I had whatever it was in my scoop. BAM there it was… The ring,  what a great feeling seeing the ring in your scoop.  It never gets old.  Now to reunite the owner to the ring.  When I walked back up the hill to the cabin, I mentioned to owner that was standing out on the deck – “boy a lot of junk targets out there”. He said yes he was afraid of that. When I extended my hand out with the ring, it took him by surprise. You found it. You could just see the emotion run across his face. The ring had such deep sentimental value that when reunited you can feel that everything is back in it place and the relief that you are complete again.  It’s so great to see that relief happen right before your eyes.

Lost Gold Ring at San Diego Park Found!

Richard and his wife spent some time at the park relaxing and throwing the Frisbee. Not long after they realized Richard’s ring was missing! After an exhaustive search they gave up and Richard figured he would never see the ring again.

After speaking to Richard and his wife, we got up for an early morning search with the metal detectors. After identifying a few areas the ring could be, within just a few minutes it was Richard who spotted the ring lying just a few feet away! Richard was THRILLED to find the ring and couldn’t believe it. I could feel the adrenaline and see the joy on his face. What a great feeling and love to be a part of the ring return.

While I can’t take credit for finding the ring, I can take credit for getting him out of bed to have another look!😄

Lost Mens Wedding Ring Recovered in Victoria B.C.

Kevin was at work placing a new culvert under the road. He was completing the clean-up and removing branches from the creek bed. After discovering his wedding ring of 25 years was missing he searched and searched. Having no luck his wife found me on the internet and convinced him to contact me. Note this ring was his fathers, so a very very special ring.
Kevin contacted me and we met up after my work shift and within 15 minutes he had his ring back were it belongs.

I love my job.

Stanton is now one of many people around the world who have been personally affected by the recent Twitter feed of celebrity actor, Jon Cryer. Miraculously, he was able to recover his cherished wedding ring that was lost during his day off work from filming the TV series ‘Supergirl’ on location in Vancouver, Canada. Cryer is recognized for his well-known acting roles, including the highly successful sitcom show ‘Two and a Half Men’ that ran for 12 seasons from 2003 to 2015, as well as the ever famous 1980’s classic movie, ‘Pretty in Pink’. Because so many around the globe have chimed in to Cryer’s Twitter story and are finding their lost treasures (thanks to the help of THE RING FINDERS), this amazing outcome has now been officially titled, “The Jon Cryer Effect”!

Yes, just like for Stanton himself, it was touching to read the October 11th, 2020 account of how Chris Turner, CEO of THE RING FINDERS (an international metal detectorist directory), and professional metal detecting specialist himself, successfully recovered Cryer’s beloved wedding band on a tiny strip of grass near a seawall in Vancouver. And yet, nothing could have rocked the world more for this faithful Twitter follower of Cryer’s than the story that was about to follow!

After reading Cryer’s emotional journey in being happily reconnected with his ring, Stanton decided to check out THE RING FINDERS directory to see if there was a metal detecting specialist in the Washington, DC area. My profile popped up, he liked what he read, and soon after, an email inquiring of my services headed to my inbox!

Stanton emailed:

“Hi Brian, I found you on theringfinders.com (courtesy of a Jon Cryer tweet). Do you have availability to help me look for a lost wedding ring? I live in DC near Takoma Park.  The ring has been lost for a several years so there’s no rush. I’d just like to get some closure. Hope you’re having a great weekend. Thanks, Stanton”

I promptly responded, and before long, the two of us were on the phone together the next morning, talking details about his missing ring and setting up a search time for later that day!

THE BACKSTORY

As with most juicy stories, there is always room for some unexpected drama that finds its way into the event. The story goes like this: More than 3 years ago, like with most couples, Stanton and his wife were having a heated argument. At some point, rings were being taken off and slammed on the kitchen counter. Stanton’s spouse grabbed his handsome platinum wedding band and moved swiftly towards the French doors that led to the back deck on the second floor of their house. The doors flew open and the athletic arm of the passionate young lady who was quite skilled at playing baseball, pulled itself back like a trigger on a gun, and in her highly charged emotional state, she side armed a throw that any Washington Nationals baseball pitcher would be proud of!

Out towards the back of the house, the ring made its journey somewhere below and beyond the second floor deck. Stanton went on to share that he tried to prevent the release of the ring but his efforts proved to be ineffective. The initial windup was successfully transitioned into an eventual classic rocket launch! Eventually, like in most cases, once the couple makes up and moves pass the heated moment, shame and regret sets in and the search and recovery efforts ensue. That is exactly what took place in this particular case.

Stanton’s wife, Jessica, was brave enough to acquire a metal detector and embark upon a search with the children all around the lawn and the adjacent property next to their home. Nothing turned up. She felt really bad about the whole situation, realizing that the ring was nowhere to be found. At some point, over a period of time, the search efforts were wrapped up and the ring was presumed MIA. Worse than that, the couple ended up going their separate ways and in the end, discovering the whereabouts of the missing platinum halo was the last thing on Stanton’s mind.

Now, fast forward 3 years later. Who could have written a better script than this?! As a result of actor, Jon Cryer losing his wedding band in Canada and a professional metal detectorist who happened to be the CEO of THE RING FINDERS finding it for him, word spread around the globe via Cryer’s Twitter thread about the actor’s ring recovery! 3,000 miles away, in Washington, DC, Stanton read the account about THE RING FINDERS and then wonders if maybe there’s a chance of finally recovering his missing wedding band! As mentioned above, he promptly emails me to discuss the matter!

THE SEARCH

Though the autumn weather provided for a rainy and chilly Monday afternoon, I was more than excited to meet the fellow Washingtonian and see if I could bring a smile to Stanton’s face with the recovery of his lost wedding band!

When I arrived at Stanton’s delightful house, I immediately asked my client to take me into the kitchen where his wedding band was last seen before it was picked up and taken to the rear of the house. He pointed to the spot where it had rested and then he walked me to the French doors located at the back of the house that leads out to the deck. Then, he opened up the French doors and reenacted that dreadful moment when his wife did the old “heave-ho” just inside the house.

Next, with a steady downpour of rain, Stanton bravely walked me out to the deck and down the stairs leading to the lawn. He said that he called his ex-wife to ask for additional details that he may have forgotten over the past three years. Jessica believed that she side armed the throw and was still convinced that the ring flew to the left on a diagonal course towards their chain linked fence. Both of them were pretty convinced that the ring most likely ended up along the fence line, though nobody could spot it or detect it properly with the machine during the earlier searches.

Once Stanton finished orienting me around the property, I returned to my car to retrieve all of the necessary gear for the search. Then, while the rain kept pouring down, I wheeled my equipment to the rear of Stanton’s property and began the recovery attempt.

First, I searched on the deck, moved down the steps and moved under the stairs. Then, I checked the gravel, looked under the garden hoses and planters, and finally I searched the backyard lawn. There were quite a few pieces of metal buried just below the ground, but no ring was to be found. My finds bag that hung to the side of my detector harness became half full of non-ferrous metallic items by the time I completed that section of the property.

Instead of focusing on the fence line which would be extremely challenging and time-consuming, the wisest direction to choose was to take my gear over to the neighbor’s yard and begin metal detecting on their lawn. If I didn’t find the ring over there, I would have no choice but to work at a worm’s eye level close to the ground and focus all along the chain linked fence.

Experienced metal detecting recoverists and specialists will tell you that one of our greatest arch enemies happens to be metal fences. The reason for this is that there is so much metal on the fence, that it causes rings with precious metal to be completely masked, as if it was non-existent. One must be on their hands and knees and carefully hand detect, pulling away all of the debris, dead grass and weeds in order to make sense of the area. Even that does not guarantee that you might find the ring. If it’s buried quite deep next to the fence, unless you dig up everything from the fence to about a foot away, your efforts will be completely futile.

It was probably about an hour and a half into my search when I took my detectors over to the neighbor’s yard (Stanton got permission for me to search the yard adjacent to his). I was completely drenched but I didn’t care. All of my waterproof gear kept me nice and dry. I started grid searching from the edge of the neighbor’s deck, down the lawn and towards the rear alley. I purposely kept my equipment away from the fence by nearly a foot and a half so that I would not get false readings on my detectors. Unfortunately, there was a lot of metal that was buried in a particular region where I was searching on the lawn. There was so much that I was very concerned that the ring could have gotten mixed up in that “cemetery” of non-ferrous objects. It was at that point that I needed to switch metal detectors by using a smaller coil at the end of my detector shaft in order to differentiate between one small metal object and another one nearby to it. I dug up a few shallow items but there was no platinum treasure buried in that region. It was at that point when I continued on by switching back to my 15-in coil detector and moved along my grid line farther down the lawn.

When I had passed the two and half hour search mark, I had finished my first pass down the neighbor’s lawn with my imaginary grid line. It took a long time to complete that first pass because of how much miscellaneous non-ferrous metallic objects were buried throughout that area. I found a couple of coins including a nickel and a penny, along with one or two pull tabs, as well.

I was about 10 to 15 feet away from the fence and half way across the lawn as I was moving back towards the deck area of the neighbor’s yard, when I got another legitimate signal. My detector was reading VDI numbers of 12 and 13, which like earlier, usually ends up being a soda can pull tab or a nickel. I looked at the positioning of where the potential target was located in relationship to where Stanton’s deck was situated and I realized that the ring could have possibly made it over to this place if it was thrown extremely hard. It was quite realistic to assume that the trajectory path could have gone to this very spot where I was about to investigate.

Once I checked a few more things out with my detector, as I waved the coil over the target area, I was ready to kneel down and pinpoint the exact location of the item that was clearly under the earth. ‘Could this be the object that I have been looking for in the past couple hours or so?’ I excitedly thought to myself as I pulled out my hand held metal detector and moved it over the spot where the machine had picked up the initial signal. Carefully and slowly, I moved some grass out of the way and removed a bit of dirt that covered the object. It was at that moment that I realized I had found Stanton’s missing wedding band that had been thrown from his deck 3 years earlier! I knew I discovered it when I saw a faint metallic halo shaped object just slightly visible at the surface! It was his platinum ring and it was still giving off a brilliant shine! A very handsome one at that! I lit up with excitement and disbelief! At any point in time, the ring could have been spotted and pocketed by someone in that neighbor’s backyard over the years before it made its way into the ground! Or, it could have been buried up against the fence line, never to be detected or ever recovered! I thanked the Lord for guiding me to this spot and giving me the wisdom necessary to locate and pull this keepsake from the ground!

The roadmap to this ring recovery was nothing short of a fun little fairytale! It started with Stanton reading Jon Cryer’s Twitter tweet about THE RING FINDER’S Chris Turner finding the actor’s beloved wedding band in Canada (almost 3,000 miles away from Washington DC)! Then, an email is sent to me requesting my help in finding Stanton’s own ring, we talk on the phone to discuss the story of how the ring was lost, I examine all of the clues and tips, I then ask my client endless questions and interview him once more upon my arrival at the search site, I get the tour around the “crime scene”, and then begin the metal detecting adventure that eventually led me to the neighbor’s yard where I finally and successfully recovered Stanton’s lost wedding band! WHAT AN AMAZING STORY!

It was because of all of these steps, as well as my relentless determination to find the lost item that I was able to raise this precious sentimental keepsake from the ground, in the neighbor’s yard, in the pouring rain, and return it to the man who curiously wondered where it had ended up after all these years!

I couldn’t wait to share with Stanton what I had found approximately 75 feet away from his second floor deck on the other side of the adjacent fence in his neighbor’s yard! He was quite surprised and beyond thrilled with what I was able to achieve and ultimately return to him! As I was wrapping things up, the happy Washingtonian was on the phone with his ex “Jess”, excitedly sharing the news that I had found the missing ring! She was so happy to hear the news and thanked me for my successful efforts! Apparently, the two of them have remained close friends to this very day!

After I did the reveal, the two of us had a nice laugh together as we both stood in the rain on the deck, just feet away from where the initial drama ensued. I smiled and said to the very kind gentleman, “Well Stanton, with all of the helpful and insightful information that you provided me with to successfully recover your ring, probably the most accurate of all the details that you shared with me was the fact that Jessica…really did have a pretty good arm!”

Before leaving the search site, Stanton expressed to me just how grateful he was to Jon Cryer for how the actor shared his personal ring recovery story on Twitter. Without the thread, he said he may have never known that there was someone like me out there that was capable of helping Stanton recover his sentimental keepsake.

As I drove away, I smiled as a thought came to my mind as to why this special Washingtonian was so desirious to rekindle the search efforts for his lost platinum wedding band after all these years! It was just a guess, but in time I might just learn the exciting answer that I truly hope to hear!

Lost Wedding ring found in River Cochrane

I received a call from Coby telling me his wife lost her Diamond wedding in the river in Cochrane. He wanted to know if we had a chance of finding it. I told him I have found other rings in the water in the past and would come out in a couple of days to look for it. I went out on a Saturday morning and gave it a try the river was very high and it was hard to search I tried for about an hour. She was sitting a bunch of big rocks and when she swung her arm the stand up it went into the water with all the big rocks and boulders it was a hard find. I told them because I couldn’t find it to try back in the fall when the river would be down.  So in September went out and gave it a look now both her and the newborn baby and Coby were there and we began to search we check the water and the start between all the boulders slowly moving them one by one. After a couple of hours and moving a bunch of boulders, we recover the ring One happy family.l

Lost Ring Returned 37 Years Later

Lost Ring Found…..but in the most unexpected way!!!

I talked to Tina. She was desperate to get her ring back. She had lost it while walking on the Crescent Heights ridge overlooking our city’s downtown. What started as a lovely walk ended in panic when she got home and found her necklace was broken and the ring and cross that hung upon it were gone.

The cross was nice, but the ring, it was the last thing her mom gave her a year ago just before she passed. It was the only physical reminder she had of her mom and now it was gone.

Tina and I walked the route she had taken and the one she had already searched. For the most part it was on a hard packed heavily used path or the sidewalk across the street. I pretty well knew that if it fell there, it was already gone/picked up. There was a section in the park and I promised to search it.

She left and I looked. My friend Perry has a metal detector as well and I invited him to join me in the park as he only lived a few blocks away. We searched to no avail. So there ends the story.

Not so. Perry calls me a few days later. His neighbour messaged him and asked if he knows how to tell if a ring is gold or not.  When he finally gets to see the ring it turns out to be the ring lost by Tina.

It took a while but the ring is back in Tina’s hands. A little worse for wear but with a little TLC, it will be back in shape as a constant reminder of her mom’s love.  Just in time for the 1 year remembrance gathering in honour of her mom.  Tears flowed.

Tina’s Story

“One afternoon I was walking crescent heights in Calgary with my girls, one of which was a toddler who was on again/ off again getting a piggy back ride from mama. Upon our arrival at home, I felt what I thought was a hair on my neck to only discover my chain had snapped! Well on that chain was a ring left to me by my mother who passed away at the same time last year! I was devastated to say the least, we traveled a pretty vast distance with truly no rhyme or reason to our path. I went into panic mode and contacted the local school, put up posters and walked that area for countless hours- NOTHING!
The next day I posted something on Calgary lost and found to have someone suggest contacting a metal detector group, and from there I met Evan ( angel to say the least) in our chat I discovered he had already begun searching for the ring, not even knowing one another yet! (The school put out a post)
We met the following day, I showed him my route, he seemed doubtful yet optimistic as the distance was vast yet contained if that makes sense…?

This man searched for hours on end, and no ring to be found! Again just devastated. Especially as I was approaching the anniversary of my mother’s passing!

One day closer to the date, I got a message from Evan indicating that someone approached a metal detecting buddy of his and they believed the ring was found!!! My heart was in my throat- honestly.

Evan and his friend rushed to get that ring to me, and although that ring was damaged it was the ring!!! The band was damaged but all stones in place!

Evan went above and beyond to help me find this ring! From his countless hours of search, to holding my hand, and offering encouragement all along, to hand delivering the ring, but days before my mother’s passing anniversary.

In this case the ring finder was so good, the ring found him! I am forever indebted to him, not only for physical efforts but his support! Words can’t express what this man has done for me and if I ever lose anything again (fingers crossed I don’t) he’s the best guy for the case!

On a side note there was a cross on that chain too, and he still continues to search for it! I’m amazed at his devotion ( the thrill of the hunt? 🤔) either way I’m grateful beyond words! “

Lost Yellow Gold Wedding Band Found In Ann Arbor Michigan

Grandpa’s Little Helper

This nice gentleman was visiting his son from out of state. Him and his son decided to rake and bag the leaves in the front yard. Unfortunately his wedding ring of 52 yrs came off. How could he return home to his wife with no ring? On site and in the drizzling rain I turned on my MXT and we arranged all 17 bags of leaves so I could search around and under each bag. Going on a hunch to check the bags first I went from right to left and when I got to the 5th bag I got a faint whisper of a signal that said here I am!, and a number on the detector meter where the gold ring should be. Taking the bag onto the concrete surface and out of the rain I checked that the concrete was free of rebar. Dumping the contents of the bags caught the attention of his granddaughter. Scanning thru the leaves the faint signal turned into a no doubt signal. Reaching down I brushed the leaves aside and this beautiful gold ring appeared on the concrete! At this point his granddaughter took control! Reaching down she picked up the ring and slid it onto grandpa’s finger and now has some practice for the future! This made all of us smile in addition to finding the ring and now he can return home with his ring of 52 years with memories and stories of his little helper for years to come!

14k Gold Mens Wedding Band Lost in Backyard Renton WA

Justin contacted me asking for some assistance on searching for his lost 14k gold wedding band. Recently he had lost some weight and his wedding band of ten years had become loose on the finger. Earlier in the day he went to Angle Lake Park for a swim with his daughter and nearly lost it. Fortunately he took his ring off and secured it to his key chain for safe keeping. He did have a strong memory of having his ring back on his finger once he returned home. He told me that he spent some time in his back yard and one of the actions he remembered was playing with his cat. He was dancing around the cat a bit and moving his hands about. Based upon the knowledge of the loose fitting ring and this bit of animated play and seeing the thick backyard grass I had a strong suspicion his ring was most likely in the yard.

Justin told me he had been looking through his yard for the past two months and just one week prior to my search he had purchased a basic metal detector. He admitted he didn’t have much success with the machine and this is when he went looking on line for fresh options. Fortunately he stumbled across TheRingFinders.com and the rest is history.

Lost ring at Coronado found

Stephen and his family were visiting from out of town and spent the day at the beach in Coronado. He had removed his wedding ring before going into the water and left it there were they were sitting in the dry sand. At the end of the day, the belongings were gathered and the ring ended up MIA. I got the call the next day and got the particulars on what type of ring, a photo of the ring, and approximately where they were sitting via a Google map, since they had already gone home a couple of hours north of me and couldn’t show me the exact spot personally. Over a Sunday night and a Monday morning, there usually are several people who detect that beach, but, the area where they were sitting wasn’t right in the most common area, so, there was still a chance it was still there. I headed over after all the crowds had left for the day and took a guess as to where to start. I actually started a bit north of where ground zero was supposed to be and was going to work my way south. When I got the the area, I noticed that the beach grooming machine had gone through the place. Yikes, another strike against a successful search. I turned on my light to take a closer look at the sand, and realized that they just ran the big rake through there, and not the sifter. Good! That made me a bit more confident.  I made about three 20 foot passes and got my 4th solid 14 on my Equinox. The previous 3 were pull tabs, as usual, but, this 4th one was Stephens ring! This search could have taken hours, but, sometimes you just get lucky! I sent a photo of the ring to Stephen and he was overjoyed that it was found and he could actually wear it again. Now it’s up to the USPS to do it’s job getting his ring home safe and sound. Thank you for the reward Stephen.
