Platinum Wedding Ring Lost In The Drakes Island, Wells Beach, Maine Surf, Found With A Metal Detector

Cheryl and I arrived home, from a successful recovery and return, in Eliot, Maineat approximately 11:00am. At just prior to 1:00pm, I received a call from Megan. Megan told me that earlier that morning, at around 9:30am, her husband Craig had been throwing a football around, with their son. They were in the water, on Drakes Island, Maine, in Wells, Maine, when on one of Craig’s throws, he saw his Platinum Wedding Ring come flying off and land in the surf. After searching for the ring, in the water, they gave up. Megan told me that they were on vacation at Drake’s Island and live in Connecticut. She had placed a Facebook post about the lost ring and asked that anyone who found it, to please contact her. Once the post went live, Megan said that many of the comments said to contact The Ring Finders of Maine. Megan and Craig had never heard of me, so they investigated my Facebook Page and saw all the successful recoveries. That is when they decided to call me and give it a shot.

I told Megan that I could go down, asap but was a little concerned about the correct area to search. I texted her a photo, of Drake’s Island Beach and broke the beach up into 4 sections. I asked her which section the ring was lost in. She replied section 3. I told her I was on my way and if someone could meet me there to pinpoint the location. She told me they weren’t there at the moment, but Craig would meet me there, as soon as as he could get there. Perfect!!! Once I arrived at 1:40pm, I took a few photos and texted them the location I was at. At this point, Craig called me and told me It looked good and that he was just to the left, of the Lifeguard stand and his son was to the right of the stand, while throwing the football. He thinks the ring would be to the right of the stand and may be in the rocks, but more likely just outside the rocks, going towards the water. Craig also told me that he was on his way to Drakes Island but was coming from Freeport, Maine, where he was visiting family. There was also an accident on the Maine Turnpike, slowing traffic down and he didn’t expect to arrive at Drake’s Island, for at least a half hour. No problem. I would start the grid search a little further out from where he thinks the ring would be. I would grid horizontally,to the water and shore, work towards the shore. The length of the search was approximately 75’ long as I worked the grid line, I was only finding mostly trash targets. After approximately a half hour of searching, I turned to start a new grid line, towards the north. After a few steps, I received the low tone that I was looking for and the VDI screen was reading, 17-18. Definitely in the Platinum range, as my own Platinum Ring will come in at a 19-20. I took one scoop of sand and threw it up on the hard packed. I then used my pinpointer to locate the target, by scraping the sand away, until I saw a silver colored ring. I cleaned the ring off and saw “Plat” on the inside of the band. Definitely Platinum, but I saw an inscription on the inside of the band also. No one had mentioned an inscription. I then sent a photo to Craig, of the ring on top of my sand scoop
“Think I have it. What is the inscription?”
Craig replied, “Looks right. The inscription is 05-10-08”
I replied, “Congratulations. That is it. Plat 5-10-08”
Craig replied with a thumbs up 👍 and told me he was still 10 minutes out and he would meet me at the house. I walked back up to his vacation rental and waited a few minutes for Craig to arrive. Once I showed him the ring, he was amazed I had found it and so fast. He was also very happy, smiling and thankful as he shook my hand. Thankfully I was able to locate the ring, as not all rings, lost in the ocean are recovered. A few things in his favor were that he lost it closer to high tide, than low tide. When you lose a ring, in the water at low tide, those are difficult recoveries. You now have less time to search, because the water will be coming back in, covering the area, in deeper water. Craig also gave perfect directions as to where he thought his ring would be and he nailed it on the head. I have had multiple searches, where I was given the wrong location to search. Those don’t usually end well. But, this did end well and I was so happy, to have been able to help Craig recover his lost wedding ring. There is no better feeling, than to return a lost item, unless you return two lost items, in the same day, which I just did. Two smiles 😁😁, on the same day is an incredible day and I won’t forget it, any time soon. ❤️🙏

Sean and his wife, Robin, were enjoying a beautiful day on Long Beach Island with family and friends when the unexpected happened—Sean’s wedding ring slipped off his finger without him even noticing. As a newlywed, he wasn’t used to wearing a ring, and it wasn’t until they returned to the house that he realized it was missing.

Sean retraced his steps and went back to the beach to search, but after having no luck, a few kind strangers who had seen him looking recommended my ring recovery services. He gave me a call, and we met at the beach shortly after.

Fortunately, Sean had a good idea of where the ring was lost. After a short search, my metal detector picked up a solid signal—and sure enough, the ring was safely in my scoop! A few quick photos later, and the ring was back on Sean’s finger where it belonged.

Stunning 18k diamond and sapphire ring recovered from the lake

It still has the sand on it!

Late in the afternoon I received a call from Tammy. She had recently driven from Fort St. John in northern British Columbia Canada to our beautiful Okanagan to shop for items she could not find at home. She decided to stop along the highway to spend a bit of time by the lake and ventured into the water.  While in the water, she unfortunately lost her footing and fell into the lake. When she left the water and returned to her truck she suddenly realized her ring was gone. Tammy was very upset and sought help from several strangers who aided her in looking for her lost ring. They even rented a metal detector but sadly they were not able to locate the ring. A friend told her about The Ring Finders and she called me and asked me to help find her lost ring. I told Tammy that I would meet her within the hour, packed my gear and headed to her location. They showed me where she had entered the water and approximately where she had fallen. At first I thought that the recovery would be very simple as it was not a busy public beach and the ring would be easy to locate. Unfortunately, the water was full of trash that made the search quite difficult. I checked the area where she first fell and was not successful so I started my grid towards the shore where she originally exited the lake. A few minutes had passed and I could sense that Tammy was fearing the worst and may never again see her most prized ring. I got a really nice signal closer to shore and there in the scoop was a gorgeous 18k white gold ring with diamonds and sapphires. Tears of joy came across Tammy when she put the ring back on her finger. She could not believe that I was able to locate her ring in the lake!

I have to say, and in fact I told her so, that I thought it was one of the most beautiful rings I had ever seen.

*** Master Key for maintaining restrooms and city facilities lost in beach sand. Found and returned to a city worker. I got a call from a worker at a Southern California beach. He was concerned that his job may be in jeopardy if his boss found out he lost this important master key..

After hearing that he was sure the key had to be in the sand at a certain volleyball court, I told him we had a chance to find it with a metal detector.

He was unable to meet me at the location which wasn’t a problem. He was able to give me the number of the volleyball court.

I drove 5 miles to the location and was able to find the key before dark. Also I found a maintenance rake that was left at the volleyball court.

We were able to meet that same night to return his key.. and the rake.

This story starts a week earlier with a call about a lost item in Lake MacConaughy in Nebraska. The area I was given was the largest specific area I’ve ever been given. It was doable but the hours I calculated to do it was beyond what I had and was not looking forward to it. I went anyway. I knew that if I swung over it I’d find it. 16 hours of water searching later without success I started some shallow water searching. Just then I swung over a class ring. Hopefully I can get that returned. I headed back to my chair to send the class ring information to Mark my history friend who loves to do these types of searches and he is good at it. I was beat down, tired and trying to collect my thoughts on my game plan. I then noticed that I missed a phone call and text message. Without finding that class ring I might not have looked at my phone for hours and seen the call for help. I read the message and then listened to the voice mail. An urgency behind the questioning voice asking me if I ever do recoveries at the Republican river by Harlen lake gave me a second wind for the trip. I messaged back and Kaitlyn begin to explain what happened. Without knowing all the details I immediately started packing up to make the 2.5 hour trip. As I traveled we continued to communicate and work out a game plan. They were going to meet me and help me find the spot where the loss happened. Jayson and Kaitlyn showed up from Kansas within minutes of my arrival. I knew we were going to make a good team the way we were able to do this. NOW the story. Every year April, Jaysons mother and her family and friends would do a group float down the Republican……Except this year was different. Andrew, Aprils husband wasn’t on the trip, he had passed away a few months earlier after a long and courageous battle with pancreatitis and the complications that came with it. April, supported by her friends and family, embarked on what was supposed to be a great day enjoying the precious family she has. As they begin the relaxing and fun time tubing the river, she put her hand down to try and stop herself so she could help someone who got a little too close to an over hanging branch into the river. She felt it….the feeling no body wants to feel. Her wedding ring got pulled off and dissappeared into the strong current of the river. Devastated, she immediately stopped and started to look for it. One by one others came to look for the priceless sentimental symbol of her bond with Andrew. With no success, they had no choice but to continue on with the trip. With a heavy heart April tried to enjoy the time with her company. The next day Kaitlyn with determination was on the internet searching for anything. Anything that could help her find Aprils ring. That’s when she came across theringfinders.com. She eventually contacted me and divine intervention had it that I was far west from my home and was beat down from the 16 hours I had just spent on another water recovery and needing to decompress. This was exactly what I needed. It took some good teamwork to find the exact tree and then hike all the equipment in. Jayson and Kaitlyn were so helpful and because of their determination to help his mother get her ring back we made quick work of the recovery. Through multiple texts, facetiming and even a simulated float down the river in a tube that we found in the bushes we were able to come to an agreement on the spot. I geared up and started upstream and even with the tree. Slowly moving with the current in a straight line, I got a signal. The signal I knew that I was looking for with a white gold ring could fall right on a pop tab signal depending on the KT of the gold. Using my pinpointer I then carefully worked the target into my hand. I pulled it to the surface. Yep, it was a pop tab. This could be a very long search as I have literally experienced 100’s of pop tabs before on other recoveries. Another foot or two downstream of that signal was another signal. A pop tab comes in no lower than a 25 on my VDI and this was a 21/22 and a nickel comes in at a 20. I tried not to smile and give false hopes as I carefully used my pinpointer to narrow down the signal to a spot no bigger than a quarter. I then grabbed the handful of rock and sand bringing it to the surface. The whole time keeping my pinpointer by my hand to make sure the target is in my hand. I opened up my hand. We all looked in disbelief. It was the ring. I held it up and relief hit us. It was over. They had put me in the spot, literally right on it. A quick fist bump and we headed for the shore and then hiked back to the cars. Jayson and Kaitlyn headed off for Kansas to surprise his mom, April. I stayed and thanked God for the success and to reflect on the weekend. It was my greatest honor to be entrusted with the recovery of such a priceless sentimental ring.

White Gold Wedding Set Lost in Pool Area – Found and Returned Cherry Grove SC

On 7/22/25, I received a text from Kendra just after 6:30 am saying, “Hello. Hope I’m not waking you. What do you charge to search for a missing ring? We’re staying in Cherry Grove. I believe I lost my ring while playing volleyball in the pool.”  It was a couple of hours later before I saw her text. I told her how my services work including the St. Jude’s donation I make with any money I get. She responded back that “we’re here until Saturday. I would love help finding it. We have obviously looked a lot lol, but no luck.” I called her and got more details and told her I could be there within the hour; I had a couple of things to do. I also ask for the address, which she sent.

When I got to the rental she was staying, I text her saying “Here.” She text back that she was by the pool. When we met, she advised me that they had checked the pool and surrounding area. Unfortunately, there was a metal fence surrounding the pool area. Luckily, I had brought my gold bug with a small coil and my pin pointer. I searched all along the parameter and came up with nothing but trash. I noticed a couple of bushes inside the fence with rocks as landscape, so I checked all around those. At this point, I was out of options and stopped to talk with Kendra. As we’re talking, Kendra said, “What is that?” I turned around to look and there was Kendra’s beautiful white gold wedding set laying on the concrete in plain view. I reached down and picked it up and handed it to Kendra. There was absolutely no explanation as to how the rings were just laying there. Thinking back on it, in the process of looking along the inside of the fence, I did move a couple of chairs a little to get them out of the way, but nothing major. We’ll never know for sure how Kendra’s rings ended up in plain view. The important thing is they’re back on Kendra’s finger where they belong.

Tim, known as the tag checker, gave me a call from Sea Isle City, NJ after an urgent situation. His friend Bob had accidentally dropped his valuable Cochlear transmitter in the sand during a day at the beach.

Knowing how stressful that can be, I grabbed my equipment and headed out quickly. Wedding Ring Recovered in Chapel Hill

I received a call from a PhD student in Chapel Hill (ironically, a student at Duke, not UNC). He had been playing basketball on an outdoor court and when he made a pass to another player, he flung his rings (plural) off his finger. While the player did catch the ball, the rings disappeared. It was late in the day and he was unable to find them before it got dark, which is when he contacted me. We agreed to meet first thing in the morning because it was a public court – I didn’t want anyone finding it before we had a chance to recover it for him. We met at the court and that’s when he explained the full story. The rings had come off, passed through a chain link fence, and were lost in the brush and briers beyond the fence. He was able to find the first ring on his own, probably 10-12 feet beyond the fence. In searching for the second ring, it became clear that the amount of trash and brush was making the recovery more difficult than it needed to be, so I started to work on cutting out the briers and vines so we could actually see the ground. After probably 30 minutes of “trimming”, I had exposed enough of the ground that we were able to see the ring and grab it. Another happy ending!

Class Ring Recovered – Wake Forest

I was contacted by a gentleman up in Wake Forest. He had been watering plants in the yard and noticed when he was through that one of his rings was missing. He described it as a man’s class ring, which was great news (a man’s class ring is large and if the person knows roughly where they lost it, it is usually a straightforward recovery). Even better, he had a second, slightly larger class ring to show me what I was looking for. (The larger ring was for his PhD degree and the smaller one – the one that was lost – was for his undergraduate degree. Other than the size difference, they were identical.) He had thoroughly searched all the usual places (pockets, floors, counters, trash, etc.) and finally concluded that it must be outside, which is when he called me. He showed me the path he had followed when watering and mentioned that he had stopped only once, to fill up a pail with water. I started where he started and within 5 minutes I had located the ring. It had come off his finger when he was filling the pail and had fallen through the grass onto the dirt. Given the way the grass had grown up in that area, there was no way it could be seen from above. Anyway, recovered the ring for him – another happy ending!

I received a message from Marlene. She explained that she had been at the beach in Cape May Point with her fiance and friends. She wanted to hop in the ocean for a bit and handed her rings to a friend for safe keeping. Her friend placed the rings in the cup holder of a beach chair. Later on, unbeknownst to Marlene she folded her chair as they were packing up and began walking back to her car. She asked her friend for her rings back and then realized what had transpired. Marlene and her fiance remained back at the beach site frantically searching for 3+ hrs before finding my information. I rode over and met up with the couple in about 10 minutes and had her ring in the scoop about 5 minutes after that! Another happy and relieved couple!
