Lost Ring in Garden, Don’t Waste your Time Renting a Metal Dectector – Call a Ring Finder! – Madison, WI

I took a day off from work to take care of several errands around town that had piled up, so I was driving a lot, stopping in several businesses, and crossing many parking lots.  Later in the day, I worked in my yard, weeding and cutting back branches with my pruners.  I usually wear gloves when I’m gardening, but I didn’t think I’d be out for very long that afternoon, so I skipped the gloves.  (Never again!)

Among other things, I inherited crooked little fingers and big knuckles from my father.  I’m also left-handed, and my sister had given me some left-handed pruners.  The big knuckles mean that my wedding ring has had several modifications to make it fit my finger right, with the last being hinges on the sides and a clasp on the palm side of the ring.

After I had done more gardening than I planned, I had another errand to run, and when I looked at my left hand on the steering wheel, my stomach dropped about a foot when I realized my wedding ring was gone and I had no idea when – or where – I had lost it.  Because I’m usually pretty aware of it, I thought I must have lost it in the garden – but where?  I was all over the yard and it could be anywhere – in the mulch, in the dirt, in the grass, in the overcrowded hostas, in the birdfeed bin – anywhere.

When I got home, my husband and I started to search, but it was getting dark, so we decided to try again later.  On my next day off, I checked with the places that I had visited on the Thursday that I lost the ring, but no one had seen it.  I still suspected it was in the yard, but I still didn’t know specifically where.

My husband kept up the search over the next several days, and I borrowed a metal detector from someone who answered my plea on our neighborhood message board.  But I quickly realized that I did not have the skill (or the time to learn the skill) to use it effectively.  Dan later told me that this is common when people rent a metal detector.  Feeling more and more discouraged, I checked the Lost and Found listing on Craigslist, where a title jumped out at me: “Lost Ring?”

That listing led me to the www.TheRingFinders.com website and to Dan Roekle, who I contacted. After coordinating our busy schedules, he and his son Carter came over on a Saturday afternoon.  I showed them the two specific places in the yard that I thought were the most likely places where my ring was likely to be.  Dan commented on the large number of pieces of metal that he was getting hits on, mostly from the roof replacement that we had a few years back.  He showed me one of the pieces and then he continued his search.  A few minutes later, he came back to where I was and with a totally straight face, said “Sometimes we find other things, too” and opened his hand.  There was my ring!  He had found it in the middle of the leaves of a hosta plant – the perfect place to hide.  The grin on my face still hasn’t gone away!

And there’s one more thing my father gave me – he was a clergyman who married my husband and me, so part of the service was blessing our rings.  He died seven years ago, and knowing that I have back the ring that he blessed, means more to me than I had ever thought it would.  Thank you so much, Dan and Carter!

Faith

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found.

  • from Redondo Beach (California, United States)

2014-09-17 19.09.582014-09-17 14.08.08

I received an email from Danielle today asking if I could help her find her wedding ring at the beach that she lost on Sunday, 3 days ago. I know this local beach, and know that it is usually groomed meticulously by the county. She also let me know that the ring was lost at the edge of the slope where most beach goers place their towels, and a place metal detectorists usually ply their trade on the beach. She had taken her ring off to put on sunscreen, and placed the ring in her shorts, but when she removed the shorts to get into her bathing suit and enter the water, the ring must have slipped out, and disappeared into the sand. I asked if she could meet me at the spot, but she was at work, and lived very far from the beach, so she gave me a very good estimate of where the ring was lost, and I felt comfortable with her directions. I did let her know that because 3 days had passed, the chances of finding her ring had diminished because of the previously mentioned factors, but I still held hope though that I could find her ring. I told her that I would eat lunch first, and then head down to the spot and look, and that I would report back to her one way or the other. She also sent me a picture of the ring so I would know what I was looking for.

I got to the spot and began my grid, making sure I asked some people who were close by if I could detect near them. I searched up and down about 7 or 8 times, when I heard the sound I was looking for. I dug, and saw Danielle’s ring. I then started back to the car. When I got there, I checked my email, and found that Danielle had sent me another picture of her ring, saying “here is a better picture”, wherein, I was compelled to reply saying “Here’s an even better one” attaching a picture that I had taken of her just found ring in the sand. I called her and asked if she had gotten my email, and tried to sound a little down, and remained silent while she opened it. Over the phone she sounded so excited when she saw the picture I had sent, and we arranged to meet at a mid way point in order to reunite her with her ring. She and her husband Tim had resigned themselves to the probability that the ring was gone, but a careful search was able to change all of that for them today. How great to see their smiles, and know the ring’s story will continue.

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost at Huntington Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call this morning from Stephanie who told me her husband Philip lost his wedding ring at the beach yesterday, and they were unable to find it. They got a referral for a metal detectorist who then met them at the beach at 1:00 AM this morning, but he came unprepared, not bringing the battery to his metal detector, yet he still attempted a search with a sifter. We arranged to meet at 10:30 AM at the location of the loss. When they showed me the area, I knew the 1:00 AM search had been a futile attempt without a metal detector. I searched the area for 3 1/2 hours bringing up all kinds of trash (bottle caps, foil, nails, cans, and even some coins), but no ring. I did feel encouraged though, because I knew if there was this much metal here, that no one had been there before me, and I stood a good chance of finding Philip’s ring if it was lost here. I believe though that Stephanie and Philip had lost hope, and decided to leave, thinking the ring was gone for good. They had stayed the full 3 1/2 hours, and with today’s heat and the previous early morning search, I think they were worn out. I told them I wasn’t done yet, and that there was a lot of area I needed to search before I was going to be satisfied I had covered all posibilities. It was about an hour later, when I had expanded my search zone that I came upon another foil sound, but a little different. I put my scoop in, and out comes this awesome looking ring with 5 sparkly diamonds in it. Philip had sent me a text with a picture of the ring, so I knew I had a keeper. I then sent him a text with the ring on my finger telling him how nice his ring looked. He immediately called in disbelief asking if I had found the ring, wherein I asked if he had seen the picture. What fun. They came back as soon as they could, and I was able to reunite Philip with his awesome looking wedding ring. What a great day, and what great smiles, and great comfort for them both.

Both Philip and Stephanie wished to include their stories and pictures in my blog which I have included below.

We actually have two testimonials for you. One from me and one from Stephanie. Stephanie will send you her testimonial through a separate email. Here’s my testimonial:

So this story starts yesterday at the beach where I lost my wedding ring! I LOST MY WEDDING RING!

After searching unsuccessfully for an hour with my wife, we left and the state beach gate staff suggested we look up ring finders service in google.

Found it on a website and the first guy we called said he would meet us at the beach at 1AM! Since we were desperate to find the ring, me, Stephanie, and two of our friends met with the guy at 1 am. The ring finder shows up but his equipment doesn’t work because the batteries were dead. Ugh! We searched for an hour in the dark anyway. Still No luck.

This morning we contacted a second ring finder – Steve Smith. We meet up with him at 10:30 am. He was so professional and showed us testimonials and pictures of the rings he found. Stated his service is no cost and is on a reward basis determined by us. He diligently went over the sand area where we were – inch by inch, marking the areas and sifting through sand.

After four hours, Stephanie and I decided to leave and basically gave up hope. Steve, so optimistic, stayed and kept looking for the ring despite the fact that we left. He never gave up and remained positive throughout the entire process. Another hour and a half later, he FOUND IT!!!! After searching for a total of 5.5 hours, HE FOUND MY WEDDING RING!!!!!! This was a miracle.

I felt overjoyed. All of the sadness, embarrassment, anxiety, stress and depressed feelings went away. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Thank You Steve Smith! You are fantastic! We are forever grateful.

Thanks,

Philip

Stephanie’s Story:

At the end of my birthday celebration at Huntington Beach my husband realized that he lost his wedding band. He lost it while playing football out in the sandy beach. The search was worse than a needle in the haystack. For hours we retraced his footsteps and hopelessly searched in the surrounding premises. The desperation, hurt, disappointment in my husband’s eyes were unbearable. I located a ring finder who agreed to go back to the beach at 1:30am but was unprepared because his batteries were dead and his equipment was not working.

Unwilling to give up, we continued the search in the dark until 3am with couple of our friends. We went in a line up and searched step by step with flashlights hiding from beach patrols with no luck.

It was a very restless night for us. We just had just celebrated our one year anniversary last month and can’t believe that this really happened. AND of all days on my birthday after such a wonderful day. We cannot accept the fact that it’s gone. The sentimental value of the ring cannot ever be replaced. Luckily I found Steve from www.ringfinder.com. I called Steve at seven am and he picked up the phone right away. He agreed to drive an hour down to meet us at 10:30am. He searched the premises under the beating sun. He was very determined and professional. Inch by inch he meticulously searched with a metal detector and a sifter marking searched areas as he go. After 3 & a half hours exhausted from the search previous day and lack of sleep we lost all hope and left home.

Steve was so encouraging and optimistic. Even after we gave up he continued searching. He told us not to give up and he will go over the area once more and expand his search. He promised that he will locate our ring and refuse any reward until he locates our ring.

We have already accepted the fact that the ring was lost forever. We even located the same exact wedding band to be shipped to the closest jeweler. 2 hours later we got a text from Steve with a picture of the wedding band with the message. “You’re right, it is a beautiful ring.” OMG he found it! I cannot believe he found it!! We jumped in joy and held onto each other with tears of joy flowing down our cheeks. Whether Steve wanted it or not, both of us gave him a huge hug when we saw him. We could not contain our happiness.

We always try to do the right thing, be a better person in life. I feel like karma was in play today and we finally got served what we deserved. Karma had led us to Steve! It is so wonderful that a complete stranger would show you the kindness that Steve has wanting nothing more than to help others. He is truly amazing! We gave Steve a reward while he excitedly told us multiple stories of his finds. Words cannot express our gratitude.

This emotional event was nothing short of a miracle. I feel like our vows got renewed today. We are forever thankful to Steve Smith who gave our story a happy ending. Thank you Steve from the bottom of our hearts!

Another Smile on St Pete Beach

Dustin and friends were down from Georgia to attend a wedding. After the ceremony they all had a great time relaxing at the beach. In the evening they got a couple of Volleyball games going and when Dustin went to clean up for dinner he noticed in the shower that his wedding ring was missing. The whole group searched for hours in the sand around the volleyball court but with no luck. The next morning, Dustin was searching the internet for places to rent metal detectors when he stumbled on The Ring Finders site and found SRARC. He contacted Mike Miller and Mike organized a quick hunt as they were preparing to leave for the trip back to Georgia. Chris Duerden was able to join Mike and the each took one side of the volleyball court. In about 5 minutes Chris yelled “Here it is”. Dusting was as happy as could be, Way to Go Chris!!!!!

I was just finishing up my search in Santa Monica, Ca today, when I received a call from my wife who had talked to Jim earlier. Jim’s wife Sabrina had been at the beach yesterday, and took her rings off to put on sunscreen. Not wanting to lose them, she put them in her beach bag. Later an unfortunate turn of events happened, when preparing to leave for the day, she began to clear the sand from her belongings, and noticing sand in the beach bag, she turned it upside down, and shook the sand out of it, her rings followed the sand. It didn’t take her long to realize her mistake, but by then the sand had swallowed up her symbol of marraige. Jim and Sabrina searched yesterday, and Jim came back today to search some more. I knew by the looks of the beach (the beach cleaners had not been through) that we had a good chance of finding her rings. I set up, and began my search. It took about 45 minutes of careful grid searching, and going outside of the original area they showed me, that I was able to hand Sabrina back her rings. At that moment everyone around went into applause at the sucess of the search. What fun to see such joy, and to see the smile back on Sabrina’s face.

I received a call from Rob’s wife this morning asking if I could help them find his ring. They were enjoying their day at the beach, and Rob decided to dig in the sand, and when he was done, his ring was gone. I was very confident I would find his ring, because it was lost today, and they knew the exact location. I set up, and began my search, after about 5 to 10 minutes, I was able to hand Rob his ring back. Smiles all around. What a great and wonderful hobby.

Lost Gold Ring in Victoria Found and returned

July 20th 2013 Roy lost a ring in Elk Lake that was a very special ring because it was custom made from his late mothers jewelry.  When Roy was on an air mattress in July of 2013 he felt and watched his ring fall off and sink to the bottom. He jumped off and figured that it was about 10 feet deep.

Roy hired a diver the next day,  who spent 1 hour and 20 minutes searching, but no luck.

Fourteen months later I was diving with my Hookah and an under water detector looking for another lost ring, when under 6 inches of silt found this ring.

I knew this was a very special ring so I had to try to find the owner.

I searched the internet and found Roy’s ad and texted him, ” I think I have found your ring I said”.  A few minutes later my phone rang, the man at the other end gave me a description of the ring in my hand and we arranged to meet later that day.

Roy appeared to be in shock but very happy, fourteen months later his lost ring was recovered and returned to him.

I love my job.

Friendship Medallion Lost at Newport Beach, CA…Found.

P1020593P1020592

I received a call from Terry’s son-in-law about 10:00 AM today asking if I would help his father-in-law find his lost medallion. We arranged to meet at 12:30 at the beach site. I met Terry, and he explained the story behind the medallion (there is always a great story!). He has had this medallion for 35 years now. 35 years ago his best friend went to Rome, and bought two identical medallions of which he kept one, and gave the other to Terry, who has treasured it ever since. Yesterday Terry and his wife went to the beach, and Terry not wanting to lose his treasured item when he went into the water, took it off and left it with his other stuff on his beach chair. The problem occurred when he was ready to leave, and forgot he had left the medallion on the chair when it was folded up to go. He realized when he got back to the car, but found out that the gold sinks real fast as soon as it hits the sand. He and his wife combed the area yesterday, and came back today using different tools to try and find his medallion, but to no avail. He told me that he was going to meet this friend later today, and I am sure felt bad that he would not have his symbol of enduring friendship with him when they met. It was good that they had land-marked the area, so they could put me in the right place for a search. I got ready to search, and Terry realized someone had innocently made off with his beach towel, and it was while he was on his way to get his towel that I received the gold tone in my headphones. I scooped once, and saw the gold chain attached to the medallion. I looked up as Terry was heading out across the beach and yelled out, “Terry you might want to see this”. He immediately turned around in almost disbelief that I could have found the medallion so quickly. What a great joy to see such a great joy returned. Terry was referred to me by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder).

Terry sent me the following email to include in my blog:

Steve  Many thanks for helping me find my metal that I lost on the beach. It was fantastic when you brought it up out of the sand. It was a gift from my best friend 35 years ago, and i was heartbroken when I lost it. Fortunately you saved the day. I can not thank you enough. Keep up the great work!!!!    Terry

Gold Nugget Ring Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found.

  • from Redondo Beach (California, United States)

P1020590P1020588

I received a call from Zack Tuesday, who sounded devastated at the loss of his ring. I arranged to meet him at the site right away. When I arrived I saw that he had rented, or bought a metal detector, and had been searching the beach for a long time. I knew the detector he was using would be alright for the dry sand, but wouldn’t work in the wet sand or the water. He told me he had lost the ring the day before while out with his friends. They were playing frisby in the dry sand and in the shallow surf. I decided to search the dry sand first, and covered a larger area than Zack showed me, just in case he may have misjudged the area they were using, I then concentrated on the wet, but the tide was still somewhat high for the time I was there, so I decided to go get my waders in order to get into the water. I searched the area Zack showed me, but was unable to find his ring. I felt bad to let him know I couldn’t find the ring after he told me his grandfather had given it to him, and passed away the day before he lost it. Zack looked at me, and said, “Maybe he wanted it back”, at which point I told him not to lose hope because Metal Detectorists are a good group, and most try to return items when they can, so if someone found it, they might try to find him.

When I awoke the next day, I was checking the tide charts, and realized that at 12:38 AM Thursday, the tide would be very low, and give me a chance to search the lower slope of the beach. I got down there about 9:30 PM, and was able to enjoy the warm night air while walking off my dinner of spaghetti. I worked the slope and into the water in the darkness getting very few signals. I brought my pulse machine this time to try to overcome the extreme “sanded in” conditions. I also worked outside of the area Zack had showed me to make sure I covered all possibilities. It was when I was about 60 feet passed the original boundary Zack had showed me the day before that I received the signal down in the wet sand near the lapping water of the low tide and found Zack’s ring. I was so excited, that I got to the car, and sent off a text to Zack which I expected him to see the next day, seeing it was 12:30 AM, but instead I received an instant reply of total excitement. We arranged to meet on Thursday where I was able to return his ring. What a great and awesome few days.

Zack wanted to include his story, so he sent me the following to put in the blog:

Hey Steve,

Just wanted to thank you again. I am still so excited that you were able to find the ring. It truly means so much to me. Here is my story for your blog.
Best Regards,
Zack
My Grandfather had given me a ring a couple years back. I wear it all the time and love representing him as he has always been one of the most important people in my life. Unfortunately he got sick due to old age and passed away on Aug. 27 2014. Of course I was devastated and all I had from him was the ring he gave me. So I wore it. The funeral was on the following Sunday and on Monday a friend of mine wanted to take me to the beach to try and take my mind off of things. It would have been a nice day but it turned for the worst when the ring he gave me fell off my finger. Once again I was devastated and did not know what to do. I had lost something that I held so close to my heart. I searched and searched with no luck. I went online and found Steve, who came over as soon as he got the call. Just talking to him I could tell he was determined to find the ring not for personal gain but just to put a smile back on my face and do something good for someone else. He searched and searched combing a large area on the beach. Still with no luck, Steve put on a water proof suit and got into the water, searching while getting hit by wave after wave… but still after several hours, we still had not found the ring. At the end of the night, I told Steve that I appreciated all his hard work but I did not want to waste anymore of his time because I felt that there was a possibility it was deeper in the ocean than I had guessed. I thanked him and we both walked away disappointed. The next day I received a call from Steve. He told me how much he wanted to find the ring for me and that he was going back to the beach and continue searching at 10PM at night during low tide. I was speechless, The fact that a man I just met was so caring and determined to put a smile on my face completely surprised me because I had thought the ring was gone. Steve had different plans. So he went out late at night and expanded the search to a wider range. At 12:30AM I had received a Text from Steve saying he found the ring. I saw this and jumped out of bed in pure excitement. Steve is the best there is and I could not be happier to have met him. Not only because he did the impossible in finding my ring, but also because it was a pleasure to meet a man who is so genuine and caring about what he does for people. I would like to thank Steve with the bottom of my heart. I never would have found it without him.
