Hello!  My name is Josh Kimmel.  I recently joined The Ring Finders.  I am very involved with metal detecting and have a true passion for this hobby / lifestyle as well as a passion for recovering history in all of it’s forms.  My passion for metal detecting goes beyond just merely trying to find pieces of the past, I also have a passion for helping others locate those special lost items that they thought may have been lost forever.  That’s right!, I enjoying trying to help others find these items and strive to reunite people with their items.  Jewelry such as class rings, wedding bands, engagement rings, gold, silver, platinum and other rings and jewelry to keys and even property markers.  I have been asked to search for many different things and strive to do my best to locate them when possible.   One of my favorite returns was of a silver and platinum class ring that had been lost for approx. 31 years when I one day found it and tracked the owner down to return it to her within 2 weeks.  When people lose that precious, sentimental item it can be very distressing and I do what I can.  Each lost item is unique and has a story of it’s own.  When that item is lost by someone that story doesn’t have to end.    With a recovery that story can continue.

Keys Lost at Bolsa Chica State Beach, CA…Found.

I received a text from Gary today asking if I would be available to help him find his keys that were lost the night before at the beach. He had been out with friends enjoying the temperate weather, having a fire on the beach, and roasting S’mores when he noticed his keys were no longer in his pocket. These were keys that had a specific purpose, and would be hard to replace. Also there was a flash-drive attached that had personal information which he wanted to keep. I told Gary I would be able to meet him at the beach in a couple of hours, and he sent me the location. We met, and he showed me the area. I began my search, and realized the area was infested with foil, pull tabs, bottle caps, and a lot of iron in the form of screws, nails and bolts, with a few coins as well. The search was slow because of digging a lot of unwanted items, but in order to make sure I did not pass over the keys, I dug every hot hit. About 1 1/2 hours later I dug a quarter, and once I put it away, I passed my coil over the area again, and had another good hit. I put my scoop in, and found Gary’s key chain. Needless to say that he was thoroughly happy about having them back. Glad to have made his day! Gary was referred to my by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder).

After a day at the beach, I got home to realize I had lost my engagement and wedding ring. I rushed back the next morning in hopes of finding someone metal detecting and eventually found one in the area to rent.  I searched for 4 hours to no avail.  My husband and I went back a few days later, renting the metal detector and searching for 4-5 hours again.  And again, coming home empty-handed.

Losing jewelry is a horrible feeling, and that feeling is amplified by 1000 when they are wedding rings. No amount of insurance money would bring back MY rings.

I had seen advertisements online for the Ring Finders, but I was hesitant to contact them. I had my doubts about identifying the location of my ring for them to find.  But after two unsuccessful trips, I figured there was a 50/50 shot they would return them, and I took the odds.

I emailed Keith around 6:30 on a Saturday night and had an email back within an hour that he would be calling in the morning. He called as promised and agreed to meet my husband back at the beach in around an hour.  My hesitation was beginning to ease!

We showed him the area where we believed the rings had been lost – the place we searched over and over with our rented detector – and he found them in less than 20 minutes.

The successful result speaks for itself! We could not be happier with our decision to reach out to Keith and are beyond thrilled that he could locate the lost rings.  In talking with Keith afterward, I found out that he does survival and search/rescue training for his career. He certainly takes that professionalism and determination over into this field.  I highly recommend Keith searching for anything of significant importance.

Heirloom Ring Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Sean today wondering if I would be able to help him find a ring. After discussing the details I felt we should go to the spot after most people had left the beach. Sean explained that he had been out on a first date the night before, when they decided to go to the beach at night to watch the surf, and get to know one another. At some time when they were sitting there his new date lost her ring, a ring her late grandmother had given her before she passed away. They searched for the ring, but it seemed to have disappeared into nothingness. Sean felt so bad for his date that he was going to try all avenues to find her ring. I am happy that I was called to be a part of the recovery, and return the joy to this young lady. When I found the ring Sean was overjoyed, and was immediately on the phone with his date, who Sean said was in tears of joy. Sean’s date was not at the beach with us, so I was not able to get a picture of her with her ring, but if I do I will post it.

Metal Detecting Pitt Lake for a Lost Gold Ring

Yesterday I received a call from a lady that told me her son lost a very special ring that was gifted to him by his late Grandmother. She also said that he lost it the day they were spreading her ashes at Pitt Lake.

He was just throwing a rock into the lake when he felt the ring come off his finger…The family had spent 4 hours that day on their hands and knees searching for the ring in the long grass where the young man saw it land…But no luck!

He and his father went back the next day and continued the search for another 4 hours for this family heirloom but still couldn’t find it. I believe his mother told me over the phone that they were going to rent a metal detector and found me online and decided to call me.

I was already loading the car with equipment for a search up in Whistler which is about a 2 hour drive from where I live.  After hearing this story about the young man and knowing that they were at the location searching (45 minutes away) I figured I’d reschedule the search for the next day in Whistler. That was a good thing because after the search for the young mans ring at Pitt lake I got a call from the people in Whistler and they found their ring in their house…That saved me a couple hours driving as they thought the ring was lost in their yard.

When I showed up at Pitt lake I was greeted by the young man and his father and we discussed the search for a few minutes and I began my search. In most cases it’s never where the people where searching (8 hours) as they themselves would have found it. I cleared the area that they were searching and moved further down the embankment and I got a faint signal in some very long grass and weeds. I went in with my pin pointer and found the gold ring covered in grass and hard to see with the eye.

I get so excited myself when I find what I’m looking for and knowing the story and what it means to the young man!

The smile says it all… He was so happy and such a nice young man who you can tell loved his Grandmother & Grandfather so very much!

Lost Ring in Garden, Don’t Waste your Time Renting a Metal Dectector – Call a Ring Finder! – Madison, WI

I took a day off from work to take care of several errands around town that had piled up, so I was driving a lot, stopping in several businesses, and crossing many parking lots.  Later in the day, I worked in my yard, weeding and cutting back branches with my pruners.  I usually wear gloves when I’m gardening, but I didn’t think I’d be out for very long that afternoon, so I skipped the gloves.  (Never again!)

Among other things, I inherited crooked little fingers and big knuckles from my father.  I’m also left-handed, and my sister had given me some left-handed pruners.  The big knuckles mean that my wedding ring has had several modifications to make it fit my finger right, with the last being hinges on the sides and a clasp on the palm side of the ring.

After I had done more gardening than I planned, I had another errand to run, and when I looked at my left hand on the steering wheel, my stomach dropped about a foot when I realized my wedding ring was gone and I had no idea when – or where – I had lost it.  Because I’m usually pretty aware of it, I thought I must have lost it in the garden – but where?  I was all over the yard and it could be anywhere – in the mulch, in the dirt, in the grass, in the overcrowded hostas, in the birdfeed bin – anywhere.

When I got home, my husband and I started to search, but it was getting dark, so we decided to try again later.  On my next day off, I checked with the places that I had visited on the Thursday that I lost the ring, but no one had seen it.  I still suspected it was in the yard, but I still didn’t know specifically where.

My husband kept up the search over the next several days, and I borrowed a metal detector from someone who answered my plea on our neighborhood message board.  But I quickly realized that I did not have the skill (or the time to learn the skill) to use it effectively.  Dan later told me that this is common when people rent a metal detector.  Feeling more and more discouraged, I checked the Lost and Found listing on Craigslist, where a title jumped out at me: “Lost Ring?”

That listing led me to the www.TheRingFinders.com website and to Dan Roekle, who I contacted. After coordinating our busy schedules, he and his son Carter came over on a Saturday afternoon.  I showed them the two specific places in the yard that I thought were the most likely places where my ring was likely to be.  Dan commented on the large number of pieces of metal that he was getting hits on, mostly from the roof replacement that we had a few years back.  He showed me one of the pieces and then he continued his search.  A few minutes later, he came back to where I was and with a totally straight face, said “Sometimes we find other things, too” and opened his hand.  There was my ring!  He had found it in the middle of the leaves of a hosta plant – the perfect place to hide.  The grin on my face still hasn’t gone away!

And there’s one more thing my father gave me – he was a clergyman who married my husband and me, so part of the service was blessing our rings.  He died seven years ago, and knowing that I have back the ring that he blessed, means more to me than I had ever thought it would.  Thank you so much, Dan and Carter!

Lost Ring Located At Cedar Creek Park In Kelowna.

It was a late summer evening at Cedar Creek Park in Kelowna. Dee and her husband were out walking the dog down by the lake, Dee was engaged with her dog by throwing a ball into the lake, she was shocked when along with the ball into the water went her large silver and turquoise ring.

Both she and her husband spent hours searching the knee deep water for the ring, unfortunately the beach was rocky, the lake was wavy, with shadows on the rocks. The ring had fallen between the rocks and was difficult to see, Dee googled for help, and got me on Ring Finders. I responded the next day with my metal detector to assist them in their search. I knew the ring would not be hard to find, Dee was sure of the location, she saw it flying, she said it was a girly throw, and it can`t sink into the rocks.

After finding foil, bottle caps and pull tabs the ring was located which delighted Dee who called me her hero. She was so enthralled with the metal detecting hobby, that she purchased a metal detector from my company for her husband.

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost at Manhattan Beach, CA…Found.

I received an email from Danielle today asking if I could help her find her wedding ring at the beach that she lost on Sunday, 3 days ago. I know this local beach, and know that it is usually groomed meticulously by the county. She also let me know that the ring was lost at the edge of the slope where most beach goers place their towels, and a place metal detectorists usually ply their trade on the beach. She had taken her ring off to put on sunscreen, and placed the ring in her shorts, but when she removed the shorts to get into her bathing suit and enter the water, the ring must have slipped out, and disappeared into the sand. I asked if she could meet me at the spot, but she was at work, and lived very far from the beach, so she gave me a very good estimate of where the ring was lost, and I felt comfortable with her directions. I did let her know that because 3 days had passed, the chances of finding her ring had diminished because of the previously mentioned factors, but I still held hope though that I could find her ring. I told her that I would eat lunch first, and then head down to the spot and look, and that I would report back to her one way or the other. She also sent me a picture of the ring so I would know what I was looking for.

I got to the spot and began my grid, making sure I asked some people who were close by if I could detect near them. I searched up and down about 7 or 8 times, when I heard the sound I was looking for. I dug, and saw Danielle’s ring. I then started back to the car. When I got there, I checked my email, and found that Danielle had sent me another picture of her ring, saying “here is a better picture”, wherein, I was compelled to reply saying “Here’s an even better one” attaching a picture that I had taken of her just found ring in the sand. I called her and asked if she had gotten my email, and tried to sound a little down, and remained silent while she opened it. Over the phone she sounded so excited when she saw the picture I had sent, and we arranged to meet at a mid way point in order to reunite her with her ring. She and her husband Tim had resigned themselves to the probability that the ring was gone, but a careful search was able to change all of that for them today. How great to see their smiles, and know the ring’s story will continue.

Lost Wedding Ring Sugar Land, Texas (Recovered)

100+ Year Old Wedding Ring Lost in Alkire Lake Sugar Land, Texas (Recovered)

I was contacted by Jim yesterday evening regarding his wife’s lost Wedding Ring in Alkire Lake in Sugar Land, Texas. Jim said, his wife Kaye had been sitting out on their dock this evening and accidentally dropped her wedding  ring. Jim said her ring rolled accross their dock and dropped into about 3-4 foor of water. Jim said he and a friend spent a little time in the water searching for the ring, but their search was unsuccessful. Jim said after the unsuccessful search he had located me on the internet through “The Ring Finders”. Jim inquired if I could assist him in the recovery of his wife’s wedding ring. Jim said they had a fairly accurate location of where the ring rolled of the dock and into the water.

I meet Jim and Kaye at their residence this morning and was given a first hand account of how the ring had been lost. Kaye showed me where she had been sitting and where the ring had rolled across dock and dropped of edge.

Lesson #1 if you are using a GoPro camera to capture this, make sure it’s on and actually recording. Kaye had given me a great interview explaining how the ring was lost and the history of her missing ring.

A quick summarization of what did not get recorded , Kaye said she has worn her Wedding Ring for the past 58 years, and it was handed down to her from her Grandmother. Kaye said her ring has family history back to the early 1900’s.

Kaye was saying and explaining what I already knew, the ring simply could not be replaced.

I repositioned the GoPro setting it up on a Tri-Pod to record the recovery. The bottom of the Lake was fairly hard-packed with a thick gumbo clay bottom surface. I felt pretty confident, I would be able to recover her ring based on the bottom conditions (first recovery out of this lake). I dumped each possible target scoop on a plastic sheet and Jim worked through it with his hands sorting through the mud. I had dumped about six or seven buckets when I hit a really nice clean signal near the edge of the dock in the target area.

Lesson #2 Let me back up her for just a minute and talk about the CTX3030, I opted to use the CTX3030 on this recovery, knowing it was going to be a shallow water recovery. I wear the wireless receiver for the headphones around my shirt collar always keeping it dry and well above the water. Interesting discovery today, if you submerge the handle-head unit display of the CTX3030, the wireless transmission to the headphones ceases. The water around the head unit must some how interfere with the signal transmission to the headphones receiver. I had my CTX3030 Gray Ghost headphones packed away in the truck and after a quick set-up adjustment everything worked great. (lesson learned)

I pulled up scoop number eight and could see Kaye’s Wedding Ring in the basket, I looked up to see Jim and Kaye sitting on the dock. I smiled at the GoPro giving it a big thumbs up…LOL now, thinking this was all being recorded. I grabbed the GoPro and hollered over to Jim and Kaye and held up her family heirloom, her missing Gold Wedding Ring.

I could immediately see the happiness and joy this brought to both Jim and Kaye.

Lost Gold Coin at Rock Ridge High School Soccer Field, West Vancouver

I just got back in town and I received a call from a young man that told me he lost his gold coin at a school soccer field. He said he was play football with friends and noticed his 1945 Mexican gold coin was missing from it’s setting.  He was absolutely devastated, I could hear it in his voice. I on the other hand was excited to have the chance to search for a gold coin, it’s not everyday you get call like this and I remember a couple of years ago I was called out to a baseball field to find a $5.00 US gold coin. (Found it)

I found out after asking that the gold coin was the young man’s fathers and he bugged him for years to get it from him as he just loved it…On his 16th birthday his father gave it to him and he wore it ever since. This makes the search very important as I know how much it means to the young man that I find it. (Pressure)

We decided to meet at the school the next day early in the morning and thankfully the school was out on strike so no kids. We met and discussed the search area, it was a big search area but he remembered getting hit in the chest by the football in a specific area and he marked that with one of my cones that I use for the grid.

He had to go to work, he wished me luck on the search and drove away. My first thought was to search the spot that he got hit with the ball. After 20 minutes I got a good signal not far from the spot he got hit by the ball, I looked down and saw the gold coin in the long grass.

He was so happy and relieved that he had his coin back…He said that he was going to make a good setting for the coin so this won’t happen again.
