Copper Bracelet lost at Redondo Beach, CA…Found!

I received a call today to get in touch with a man who had lost a bracelet. I called LC to find out about the loss. He explained to me that it is seemingly insignificant, but that there was a strong emotional attachment to it. When he explained to me what this bracelet meant to him (something only LC could share), I understood the emotion. Also he said that he was going to be seeing the person who had given it to him in the next week, so there was a sense of urgency involved as well. I happened to be in Huntington Beach, CA at the time so I knew the time element was working against me, and headed immediately to Redondo Beach. When I got there, the lifeguard showed me where they had been looking, so I concentrated my search in that area with no success. Soon after, a family that had been next to the search area left for the day, and I proceeded to search that area as well. Not two minutes later, the bracelet was in my hand. LC and I arranged to meet at a local coffee shop so I could return his bracelet. It was a time of joy for him to see what he wasn’t sure he would ever see again. So the story of this seemingly insignificant copper bracelet continues.

May 14th I got a phone call from Julia and she asked for my help to recover her Russia Gold wedding band. I arranged to search the next day.

After meeting with Julia and understanding that this ring had travelled three continents to get to her and now it was lost after only three weeks, I had to put my best effort into recovering it for her.

Well I am glad to say after less then ten minutes Julia is wearing her ring once again.

I remember the days when I couldn’t wait for Friday night to celebrate the end of a work week. It was easy to understand what happened when I received a call from Ronald. He was out with his girlfriend and another friend having a few drinks. To make the story short, his girlfriend had a few too many drinks. When she insisted that she was going to drive her car their friend threw her car keys into some ivy. I recieved the call the next morning and was able meet Ronald a few minutes after he called. He is almost my next door nieghbor. One small note to mention is that I was refered by to Ronald by Joe Demarco of Demarco Detector Sales in New Jersey.  Joe is very active helping people to find TheRingFinders group.

I spent about 20 minutes with my 11 inch coil over the ivy and was just about ready to change over to my 6 inch coil which is better in trashy, tight areas. I opted to try my hand held pin pointer. We thought that possibly the keys may have ended up on a balcony about 8 feet  above the planter. I asked Ronald to ask the tenant of that unit if we could check the balcony. As Ronald started to go knock on the door, my pin pointer gave me a signal and there was the car keys. I yelled  at Ronald and was able to get his attention before he had bothered the tenant.  It was amazing how these keys were hiding in the ivy. It would have been a lot easier to find the keys if they were another color than black.  It always gets a little crasy after I’ve covered the whole area and I have to go to double check mode sometimes refered as plan “B”.

Lost Platinum Wedding Band … Laguna Beach, CA. … Found at the Beach in Sand

I was on another ring recovery 58 miles from Laguna Beach when I got a call from a Concierge at the Montage resort. The Concierge at the desk passed the phone off to Joann and I told her I could be there before dark.  I was able to get there before the sunset. Joann and her husband were waiting on the beach in front of where the ring was dropped. I made a few swings with my detector and scooped a nice wedding ring. I let Joann pick it from my scoop, then she said this is not my ring.  I put it in my pocket then  swung the detector a couple more times. The next signal was Joann and Federico’s wedding band. They were elated to have this most important symbol of their marriage back where it belongs.  I reported to the hotel’s security that I had found another ring that I’d like to return to the rightful owner. I am also posting it on Craig’s List Lost and Found.. As of this date it has not been claimed. Below is Federico and Joann’s story.

OUR STORY;
My husband, Federico Blanco and I met on October 7, 2007. We became boyfriend/girlfriend on March 15, 2008 and got engaged four years later on the same day we met, October 7, 2011. Eight months later we got married on June 10, 2012 and have had a happy and fulfilling relationship.

This was the first time I had ever lost my wedding band. I had asked Federico to hold my rings while I put sunblock on our 8 year-old daughter, Sarah and he forgot he was holding onto my rings (Wedding ring and band). When he stood up he realized the wedding band was gone but managed to hold onto the most expensive ring, the wedding ring! We searched the sand for about 15 minutes before it occurred to me to call someone who had a metal detector. I went to the Montage to ask the concierge who was named Calvin Randle if he knew any staff members who might have a metal detector but no one had one. I asked him to look online if any nearby stores sold one and in the search Stan Ross came up. We decided to give you a call and within seconds you answered and said you would be there within an hour. You showed up 90 minutes later and found my wedding band within 5 minutes or less of looking for it. Thank you again and we hope to see our story on your blog soon.

Metal Detecting for a lost Diamond Wedding Band in Vancouver, BC

Last night I got a call from a young man by the name of Aim who lost his diamond wedding band . He told me he lost it in a small section of grass in front of his brothers place, he and his bothers and friends along with his sister-in-law spent a few hours searching for the ring, but no luck. This worried me because it was such a small section of grass with a good chance of eyeballing the ring… Why didn’t anybody see it? I l learned that they had raked the whole section from one side to the other hoping they could rake the ring forward into sight. The biggest fear factor in this search was that there was only 10% grass and 90% concrete… If the ring bounced off the grass and onto the concrete, it could’ve ended up on the road…he may never see his ring again or it would be flat like a pancake. The other problem was his wife had no idea he lost the ring as she was back in Toronto, so Aim needed his ring found! That’s when he went online and found The Ring Finders, he was looking to rent a metal detector but thought he’d have an expert take a look. It was a good thing he did as there were lot’s of interference due to overhead eleictrical wires  just above the search area. This always makes the search more difficult, so after 20 minutes of searching with my metal detector I used my light source and walk the area just to see if I can catch the glint of gold & diamonds. I then decided to use my handheld pin pointer, I started to grid search the grass on my hands and knees…This was a good thing!  Aim wasn’t looking and I found the ring just inches away from the sidewalk. I think it must have been racked close to the sidewalk and covered by grass.

What a beautiful looking ring! I was able to surprise Aim by turning on my video camera and asking a few more question…the ring was in my hand and he saw it and the smiles started!

I truly have the greatest job in the world!  I love every single search I do and helping people!  The last two days I’ve had three searches and I was unsuccessful for two of the three searches…Nice to get back on the finding track!

Lost Diamond Engagement Ring … El Segundo, CA. … Found in Sand at Volleyball Court

Scott called me about 4:30 pm asking me if I could help him find a ring lost in the sand in El Segundo Beach, CA. It was a good distance for me to drive, but I felt I could get there within an hour. When I arrived I met Scott in the parking lot and as we walked over to the volleyball court I got another call for a lost ring in Laguna Beach. I asked them if they could wait and they agreed to wait till I finished this search.

Scott said his fiancé was playing volley ball when her platinum/diamond engagement ring went flying off her finger. These are usually easy searches, except when I turned on my detector there was a lot of radio or microwave signals interfering with my detector. I was lucky enough to have my CTX 3030 detector which has a switch that eliminates this interference . After making the adjustments it was a short time till I found the beautiful ring. When I held the ring up all Scott and his fiancé’s friends applauded and yelled. I got about 3 or 4 hugs from some of her girl friends. After a few minutes to take some photos I ran to my car to drive to Laguna Beach.

Lost Wedding Ring Redondo Beach…Found!

This morning at about 8:00, I received a call from a young lady telling me she had lost her wedding ring. I could hear the emotion in her voice, which let me know she was very distraught. She lost it the day before, and had searched for it herself and was not able to find it. We arranged to meet as soon as possible. I knew the area she lost it in, and also knew the beach cleaners worked that area meticulously, so I was a bit worried initially about being able to find it, knowing time is the enemy we deal with. When we walked down to the area she was in, and showed me the general location, I could see that the beach cleaners had not gone over that portion of the beach, so I was very encouraged. I set up a perimeter, and began my grid. I went out, and then came back, a foil lid, a dime, a penny, and then I heard that low growling sound in my earphones from my Minelab Excalibur ll. I was standing next to her when I pulled my scoop up to see what was inside, and looked at one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry I have seen. I had showed her the foil, the dime, and the penny when I found them, so I imagine she expected the same when I reached into my scoop. All I can say is that the look of surprise, and joy which appeared on her face when I showed her what I had found was priceless. She and her husband had just gotten married last Summer, and there were some other things that made this ring very important to her. She said her husband had reassured her that it could be replaced, but she knew it would not be the same ring.

This nice young lady sent me the following email, wanting to share her experience as to what this recovery meant to her:

I lost my wedding ring at the beach on a Friday. My husband and I searched and searched the area with no success. It was a rough night to say the least. Early on Saturday morning I called the first 800 number I found after searching on the internet for help. I was in tears as the man I spoke with told me he could help me and gave me Steve Smith’s phone number. I was speaking with Steve minutes later and an hour later, Steve met me at the beach. Within ten minutes and three digs, I had my wedding ring back on my finger. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for Steve. He was quick to respond, very professional, and successful in finding my ring. Thank you Steve!!!

So the story of this ring continues. I am so happy to be able to bring this joy to people.

Lost Ring Found in Aberdeen, Ontario, Canada

IMG_0561 The winter of 2014 in Ontario, Canada, was brutal. It was made even more difficult for newly married Aberdeen resident, Derek Pennings when his wedding ring flew off his hand as he shoveled snow. Despite his best search efforts the ring was nowhere to be found in the 4-foot high snowdrifts. Derek’s feelings of hopelessness increased when a tractor and snow blower subsequently cleared the snow. Would he ever see his ring again?

I learned about the loss from my mother who lives down the road from Derek. But it wasn’t until the spring, some months later, that I had opportunity to visit my family and to arrange a search for the ring.

Metal detecting has been a family affair since the mid seventies when my late father took up the hobby in Australia. He and my mother spent many a happy hour together probing the ground for lost treasures. And so true to form, my mother, now approaching 84 years of age, accompanied me with her trusty White’s metal-detector in hand. We both secretly wished the other would be the lucky finder.

As it turned out, Derek’s lost ring responded to my Minelab Excalibur detector as I combed a ditch across the road some 80’ from where the ring was originally lost. Disbelief was written over Derek’s face as we drove up to where he was busy cutting firewood. His expression quickly turned to joyous surprise, however, when I placed the missing love token in his hand.

So glad to have been able to assist with the discovery of your ring, Derek! All the best to you and your new bride; may the story of your ring continue for many years together.

I just threw my ring in the water on accident.  I know exactly where it dropped but it’s 5 ft down and I have no way of getting it.  This was my grandfathers ring from 1958.  Let me know ASAP

Follow-up information from Devin

Location: Outriggers Restaurant in Seabrook Texas

About 17 ft deep.  Sticky bottom, couple of inches of mud but very dense mud.  Ring shouldn’t of sunk in mud immediately.  Lots of current and boat traffic.  Sooner the better

There is a lot of boat traffic there because of the launch, this may be a safety barrier, thoughts?

I had to postpone Devin’s search until today, I just couldn’t get away any sooner for this type of job.  Devin was concerned about the delay, and I think he felt it might affect the possibilities of recovering his ring. I was very confident the ring was not going anywhere, I just needed Devin to be sure he knew the right location.

Devin and I met at the Outriggers Restaurant this morning and we discussed how the ring was lost. Devin explained he had been on the upper deck of the restaurant when he tossed some ice over the railing, He said his grandfathers ring flew right off his finger, landed and skidded across the lower floating dock and then dropped off  into the abyss.

Devin said the ring was his grandfathers Texas A&M Class Ring from 1958.

Devin and I transferred all the gear out to the dock, and then discussed how the dive would go,  and what his responsibilities would be topside.

Nearly zero visibility, water temp somewhere around 70, light boat traffic, and tons and tons of debris (spikes, bolts, nails, fishing hooks, and yes plenty of beer tops) on the bottom.

Had built a spot marker dive pole for this job, and Devin held it in position topside as a I worked a three-foot radius around it on the bottom. Had to work it inch by inch, I used a hand held Vibra-Tector 730, their was simply to much debris to try and manage the Excalibur.

About 20 minutes in, and after crawling around on the bottom with the VibraTector 730, and weeding through handful after handful of junk, I got a hold of something from 1958.

Lost Gold Medallion in the water … Belmont Shores, CA. … Found

Ami had called me about an hour after her boyfriend , Nick had lost his gold medallion in the water at Belmont Shores Dog Beach.  She had found my phone number on TheRingFinders website. I asked her a few quick questions. What time of day, Where , dry sand or water and would they be able to wait for an hour to direct me in the general location.  I checked the tides and realized that the tide was coming in which will hamper the search. More important was that I meet Nick to hear his story and see where he was when it was lost.   The normal drive would be about 30 minutes but there was a major traffic problem and it took three times as long to get there.  Nick was able to wait but the tide did not, it was already nearly high tide.  Nick told me that he had been in about 3 or 4 feet of water when his dog swam up to him. The dog’s paw got entangled in the necklace and Nick felt the chain break. After hearing the story I had to give it a try even though I felt it was out in the deeper water. I searched for about 30 minutes in waist deep water with small waves, not one signal. Nick had told me the medallion was a sentimental family heirloom. I was confident I had a better chance to search for it early the next morning which was a minus .3 ft low tide. As it worked out, I was able to find the medallion and the chain within 30 minutes at 6:30 am Saturday morning.  Ani was able to meet me so she could pass it off to Nick. I also learned that this medallion had belonged to Nick’s dad which made it so very special.  It was a pleasure to help Nick, his Mother and Ani find this heirloom and to hear how happy they were. I was told they didn’t have very much faith that the metal detector would be able to find it. I get that “I don’t believe that thing will find my ring”  “LOOK” quite often, but it just makes it more exciting when I find the lost item.
