I received a call from Zack Tuesday, who sounded devastated at the loss of his ring. I arranged to meet him at the site right away. When I arrived I saw that he had rented, or bought a metal detector, and had been searching the beach for a long time. I knew the detector he was using would be alright for the dry sand, but wouldn’t work in the wet sand or the water. He told me he had lost the ring the day before while out with his friends. They were playing frisby in the dry sand and in the shallow surf. I decided to search the dry sand first, and covered a larger area than Zack showed me, just in case he may have misjudged the area they were using, I then concentrated on the wet, but the tide was still somewhat high for the time I was there, so I decided to go get my waders in order to get into the water. I searched the area Zack showed me, but was unable to find his ring. I felt bad to let him know I couldn’t find the ring after he told me his grandfather had given it to him, and passed away the day before he lost it. Zack looked at me, and said, “Maybe he wanted it back”, at which point I told him not to lose hope because Metal Detectorists are a good group, and most try to return items when they can, so if someone found it, they might try to find him.
When I awoke the next day, I was checking the tide charts, and realized that at 12:38 AM Thursday, the tide would be very low, and give me a chance to search the lower slope of the beach. I got down there about 9:30 PM, and was able to enjoy the warm night air while walking off my dinner of spaghetti. I worked the slope and into the water in the darkness getting very few signals. I brought my pulse machine this time to try to overcome the extreme “sanded in” conditions. I also worked outside of the area Zack had showed me to make sure I covered all possibilities. It was when I was about 60 feet passed the original boundary Zack had showed me the day before that I received the signal down in the wet sand near the lapping water of the low tide and found Zack’s ring. I was so excited, that I got to the car, and sent off a text to Zack which I expected him to see the next day, seeing it was 12:30 AM, but instead I received an instant reply of total excitement. We arranged to meet on Thursday where I was able to return his ring. What a great and awesome few days.
Zack wanted to include his story, so he sent me the following to put in the blog:
Hey Steve,
John called me Wednesday night explaining how he was playing volleyball, and lost his ring while going for a hit. He was still at the beach, and was willing to wait for me to come, so I gathered my gear, and was on my way. He met me and walked me over to the area of his lost ring. We talked about what had happened, what he was doing when the ring came off, and what direction the ring was most likely to have traveled. Having all of that information, it took about 5 minutes to find what had eluded John for hours. What a great opportunity to bring a smile back to John for his ride home.

Lost Wedding Ring Katy, Texas (Recovered)
Texas Labor Day Slip and Slide, beating the Texas Heat…awesome.
I received a call from Sean on Monday-Labor Day, regarding his lost wedding ring. Sean said he had been at a friends house participating in some labor day festivities when he lost his ring. Sean said they had constructed a giant slip and slide for Labor Day and he had been sliding on it when he discovered his wedding ring missing from his finger.
The Slip and Slide Race:
Sean said the rules to the race were simple slide down the slip and slide, run to a table twenty feet away, chug a beer, and the flip the beer cup until it lands right side up. Once that was done your teammate could start the race and this would continue until all of your teammates completed the race. The best 7 out of 7 runs would determine the winner, my thought was it would be nice if you could still hit the slip and slide after beer 5-6? LOL Sounds like it was a lot of fun, but unfortunately Sean lost his Wedding Ring at some point during the fun.
Sean said once he discovered his wedding ring was missing everyone at the party stopped and assisted him in looking for his lost ring, but it was not found. Sean said he returned the following day and spent 6 hours working the search area with his fathers metal detector, but he was still not able to find his lost ring.

I asked Sean to send me a few photo’s of the area needing to be searched, I always like getting a view of the area prior to the search. Sean sent the following video of the labor day event and a picture of his lost ring. The video quality is poor, but you will get the idea.
I met Sean today at his friends house in Katy, Texas to search for his lost ring.
I think Sean had completely given up hope of getting his ring back after 2 hours of searching. We took a short break, and then I asked Sean to walk me through the events in detail (where he started from, where he ran too, etc.) and it was at this time we talked about how the slip and slide had been moved a few times to get it just right. I had Sean walk me through the locations of where the slid had been moved from on the previous set-up attempts.
I worked the outer edge of one of the ealier set-up locations and was awaken by a nice tone from the CTX3030. I looked down and saw Sean’s Ring sitting right on top of the grass.
Sean is an extraordinary individual and it was a great pleasure to be able to return his wedding ring.

I received a call from Keith in May. He said he had lost his 1980 Eagles Championship ring while doing yard work. He was heartbroken and told me how much the ring meant to him. He has worn it since he received it 34 years ago.
Our schedules weren’t lining up. He was going away in a few days, and then I was going away. I told him I would come over later that day even if it was still raining out. We agreed on 1o’clock in the afternoon. He gave me his information.
It was raining very hard at 1pm. I was prepared, raincoat with hood, rain pants and waterproof hiking boots. I brought my water proof detector Minelab CTX-3030. It was a nice size yard. The street in front of the house was flooded from all of the recent rain.
Keith showed me what he was doing the day he lost the ring. I thought if it is here it should be an easy fine. WRONG!! Keith had trimmed all of the bushes & hedges, raked the entire property, put a lot of the debris in the street which is now flooded, started a mulch pile and planted new items in a flower garden. He remembers at one point looking at his hand saying this ring is giving me a blister.
I started in the easy sections, the open yard, nothing! I started moving to the different gardens. Uh-oh, they are all lined with iron to stop the roots from entering. Metal detectors love iron. It makes them sing. Even when trying to discriminate iron out of the range, there was so much it was hard to determine if there were any other signals. The machine I brought had an 11 inch coil on it. I could search the street because there is metal rebar under the surface. There was way too much debris out there to shovel onto the grass. If it’s out here the leaf sucker is going to get it.
I spent about 3 hours looking. No luck. Keith was disappointed and so was I. I really wanted to return this ring. I have been an Eagles fan for too many years. What an awesome story this would have been. I offered to come back at a different time when the weather was better. We said we would keep in touch.
A few months passed and I called Keith. He was staying in his summer cabin and wouldn’t be back in this area for some time. I asked if there would be anyone around, because I didn’t want to be on his property without someone being there. He said his wife would be there this week and it would be ok to go over to look. He had already started the inquiry of what he had to do to get the ring replaced. He needed approval from the Eagles & the NFL plus a police report.
I went over a few days later and met Michelle. She added a few other tid bits, like when he was done the yard work he traveled to North Jersey. My heart sunk. I thought to myself, that is why I didn’t find it last time. It’s not here.
I returned with and older but reliable machine, a White’s Spectrum XLT with a 3 inch coil. This is to help reduce the amount of signals from all of the iron in the gardens. I started searching the areas I couldn’t do in the rain, like the large slope of ivy in the back yard. The only thing I found back here was hundreds of mosquitoes. I moved to the mulch pile, moving stuff around, nothing. I’m getting frustrated. 2 hours later the last things to check are the gardens.
I expected the ring to pretty much be on the surface. It wasn’t lost that long ago. I finally get a good signal at close to 3 hours from when I started. I climbed under the bushes and moved away the debris. Nothing. I dig about a half an inch down. Is that gold? I dig a little more. It’s the ring!! I must have jumped about 10 feet in the air. The ring was very heavy, and very muddy. I went back to my truck and cleaned it up. Took many pictures, then I called Keith.
When I told him that I found it, he started to get choked up. He couldn’t believe that I had found it. He told me that he thought that is was gone forever. He said someone told him to pray to St Anthony, so he did. We made arrangements to meet a few weeks later when he would be back in town. He even let me keep the ring for 24 hours so I could show it off before I returned it to his wife. When we met we took pictures & he signed a few Topps Football cards that I had brought with me from his playing days.

Dear Dave,
From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for finding my lost 1980 NFL Conference Championship ring with your metal detector.
I was reasonably sure I lost the ring while doing spring clean-up in the yard. The day I called you in desperation for help, you came over immediately to try and find the ring. Although the weather was miserably cold and pouring rain, you nonetheless scanned the yard for hours trying to find it. I was obviously disappointed when you could not find it, however you said you would like to return in warmer weather to try again.
I was not absolutely sure I lost the ring in the yard, and for weeks looked everywhere but unfortunately it did not turn up. By summertime I had completely given up hope and contacted the NFL League office to inquire about replacing it (custom molds for all Super Bowl rings are kept on file).
Then out of the blue in August you called me again, offering (at no fee) to come back for another search. On your second search, to my unbelievable surprise, YOU FOUND THE RING! under a landscaping bush. I was so thrilled when you told me, I actually broke down and cried with emotion/thankfulness.
I cannot thank you enough for your dedication, honesty, integrity and persistence, and whole heartedly recommend anyone contact you for help locating lost items.

I had just finished dinner when I received a phone call at about 8:00 PM from Jeff. He had been at the beach playing volleyball, and not wanting to lose his rings, he put them in his shirt which he placed on his beach chair. It wasn’t until he went back to sit down and rest that he realized someone had moved the chair about 10 feet from its original location. The first thing he did was look for his rings, and found one, the other had fallen into the sand, and so began his search. He and his friends looked and looked for the ring, and could not find it. I told him I would get there right away, so they waited until I arrived. They showed me the area, and Jeff pointed to the area the chair had been moved to thinking that would be the place. I began my grid, and slowly worked my way to the area the chair had been moved to, and right in front of the chair was where I found Jeff’s ring. In 10 minutes, I was able to hand his ring back. He will be able to sleep well tonight. It was nice that Jeff’s friends waited with him until the ring was found, so we all celebrated together; a lot of “high-fives” going around.

I received an email from Laura this morning regarding her husband’s lost wedding ring. They had been to the beach last night enjoying the warm night air, and having dinner. Her husband started digging in the sand, and soon realized his wedding ring was missing. They had gotten married two years ago, and honeymooned in Ireland. They were enjoying themselves when due to circumstances beyond their control, they had to abandon their original itinerary, and ended up in a small hamlet somewhere in Ireland. It was there where they met a jeweler in a small shop who took a liking to the newlyweds, and offered to engrave a special message of love on the inside of each ring in Gaelic. A ring with a story like this is irreplaceable, and therefore is priceless. We arranged to meet at the beach at about noon. When I got there, and she showed me the area of the loss, I set up and began my grid. I worked one way towards where they began, and then worked back picking up numerous bits of trash. It was then I heard the sound of something good in my earphones. I was able to give Laura back her husband’s ring after about 20 minutes. It was wonderful to see such joy return to Laura, and her husband through the text he sent to her when he saw the picture of his ring. Awesome day, the story of the ring continues.

I received a call at work from my wife Wendy this afternoon at around 1 PM. Apparently the message I left with the Lifeguard at Kaimana Beach Park paid off. Wendy told me that a lady named Lisa had called and left her number concerning a lost ring. So after my lunch break I gave Lisa a call and she said, “The Lifeguard at Kaimana Beach Park gave her my card and said I was the “Detector Guy” that found her daughters ring.” First of all I never show or tell the Lifeguard exactly what I’ve found only that it’s a “Ring” or “Bracelet” etc. I politely asked Lisa to describe the ring her daughter Talia lost and if I had it I would gladly return it to them. The ring in question was so unique it only took a few adjectives of description and I knew the owner would soon be reunited with their lost heirloom ring. The Queen Elizabeth crown ring had been in their family for over 25 years and Talia was heartbroken when she discovered it missing after going for a swim with her father and two brothers. She felt the ring come off and made an immediate dive underwater to retrieve it but as usual the sandy bottom consumed the ring on Tuesday, August 5th. After the swim out to the reef flag and back her father and brothers borrowed goggles from the Lifeguard in hopes of finding the heirloom ring in the shallow water where Talia remembered losing it. Unfortunately, after numerous attempts searching with the googles all hope was lost.
Wednesday, August 6, 2014:
This was a typical evening for me on a metal detecting stroll through Kaimana Beach in chest deep water. One of my favorite spots because the Hawaiian sunset is so spectacular from this beach. About an hour before sundown after finding a few clad coins I get a very loud yet growling tone on my Excalibur thinking to myself it’s another Corona bottle cap. But what in my scoop should appear the most unusual 14 karat gold ring that I’ve ever seen. I almost didn’t dig this ring as the crown shape made it sound like a growling bottle cap. A word to the wise “DIG EVERYTHING”. You’re either removing trash from the environment or uniting a family with a lost heirloom. Both are good deeds. I immediately went to the Lifeguard and asked if anyone had reported losing a ring. He said not today but thought the day before a family that frequents the beach regularly had lost a gold ring but he didn’t remember the details. Since he had my card if any reports were made or the next time he saw the gentleman he would give them my contact information. As many of you know timing is everything especially in this hobby. The story behind this ring is Lisa purchased it from a museum for her mother 25+ years ago on a trip to London England. When Talia was visiting with her grandmother her grandmother noticed Talia liked rings (as she was wearing many on her fingers) so she gave the Queen Elizabeth Crown to her. Talia cherished this ring and was devastated when she lost it. As the story goes and as brothers always do they told their mother she lost it while swimming. Lisa and I arranged to meet in front of Zale’s Jewelry store in Kahala Mall to return the ring to Talia. Mom didn’t tell her why they were going to the mall so as you can see in the photo Talia was surprised and extremely joyful to be reunited with her precious ring. They were so grateful to me and made me feel really good as well. That’s the most rewarding part of this hobby.
