Ring lost in the Kelowna snow, found & returned weeks later

  • from Kelowna (British Columbia, Canada)
Contact:

An ex Westjet flight attendant friend of mine, who knew I was a member of The Ringfinders, called me to ask if I could help her friend Pam locate her lost ring. Pam loaned her mothers ring to her daughter to wear. Playing in the snow throwing snowballs, the daughter lost the ring on a boulevard. I met Pam by the school and she showed me where her daughter thought that she lost the ring in the snow. Pam and both her kids had searched the area a few times with no luck, they had given up, but my friend said not to give up. By now the snow was gone and the boulevard was grass. I started my search and Pam wandered the other way, fortunately the sun luckily glinted off the gold and Pam had the ring in minutes.

Two Rings Lost in Angry Surf – Night Search, Found!

Ann-Maree was holidaying at Tauranga Bay Camp near Whangaroa and decided to brave the dumping surf and go for a wade. She underestimated the power of the surges up the beach and was forced to put her hands down into the sand to maintain her balance as the water rushed past her.

She gave up the idea due to the ferocity of the water and returned to the dry sand, that’s when she noticed her two gold rings were missing, one a very sentimental engagement diamond ring from two generations ago.

She asked at the camp office if she could hire a metal detector, they didn’t have one and instead they gave her my contact details – along with a really positive summary of my previous success stories there.

Ann-Maree phoned me at work and explained the situation. Knowing this beach changes with each tide, it eats rings so I headed home to get my kit and was soon on site – Staring at a 2.5m dumping surf break on a very steep beach. Haven’t seen it like that for many years !

The sand was really deep and mobile, but there was no way I was going to risk going into the surf until the tide was further out and it had calmed down a little.  I started by gridding the shallows, intending to follow the tide down. Within 10 minutes I had been caught by a sweep and my shorts were soaked…So gave up staying dry after that.

I ran two opposing grids on the 11″ coil, then switched to the 15″ and ran another two, real hard work with the surges grabbing the coil and only netted a token for the camp showers and a few odds and ends of scrap.

The 15″ was taking it’s toll, so with the tide further out, I reverted to the 11″ and wound the settings up so ‘hot’ it would probably pick up the earths core. And started a new set of grids.

After 4Hrs, it was now dark and I was right down on nearly low tide mark now.  I got a deep, clean tone. Battling the water and the almost fluid shelly sand, I heaved scoopfuls out of the hole until I had it, pinpointed it with the coil in the diggings, and rapidly placed my foot on it as another surge came past.  In with the pinpointer and my fingers found the shape of a ring in the dark.

I marked the spot and headed up to Ann-Marees camper to confirm – Yes! It was one of them, but not the treasured heirloom.

But, I now had a pin in the map! I knew that if I didn’t find the second ring this time around, it would be lost to the beach with the heavy surf. The beach contour had already changed significantly in the time I had been there.

I headed back and started a focussed search in the area. Another brass screw, bit of wire, odd scraps of metal… then deep and quiet, there was something. I wound the volume right up in the headphones to try and hear it over the surf. Has to be it.

Several hasty scoops later and I had the second ring.

Ann-Maree had given hem up for lost.

I refused to.

I got a call last night from Nick saying he was out looking for a turkey hunting spot when his leg fell into a rotted out tree stump and his ring came off. He saw it come off, but quickly lost it. He tried to move leaf by leaf it hopes to find it. With no such luck, he went to the local Walmart and bought a bounty hunter. Took it back out to the site and scanned the area. Again, no luck.

He then sought help from “The Ring Finders” and I came out to help him locate his lost ring the next day. I scanned the area and didn’t hear anything either. I then took my pin-pointer out and stuck it in the rotted stump hole and got a hit. I pulled out three handfuls of stuff before I was able to rescue it from the two foot hole.

Lost Ring Located in Alexandria, LA!

I got a message via social media concerning a recently lost ring. ‘My friend Cherye lost her mother’s ring in her front yard, and she cannot find it,’ the lady told me. Shortly thereafter, I was in contact with the ring owner who was distraught that her mother’s gold and opal ring had left her hand during a cleaning project outside. ‘It should just be right there but I can’t find it in the grass,’ she related.

We arranged for a meeting, and after exchanging preliminary greetings and information concerning the item, I began a systematic grid search of the small probable drop area. The detector wasn’t finding what should have been an easy find, and there was some interference from the reinforced concrete nearby. I got down on my knees with my pinpointer and began a micro sweep. Sure enough, there it was a couple of inches from the concrete driveway!

Cherye was so relieved to have her ring returned to her. ‘Thank you so much!’ she kept telling me. The thanks is all mine. I am energetic about returning smiles to people whose hope of recovering a precious item, like Cherye’s mother’s ring, had faded.

Making smiles and new friends is why I enjoy the art and science of metal detection so much. This is what it is truly all about.

Lost Sterling Silver Ring Found In Taylor Michigan

  • from Detroit (Michigan, United States)

Celtic Conundrum

I got a call from Britney she said her ring came off while she was on a 4 wheeler traversing their 3 acre property.

We agreed to meet this morning and search. I set up my MXT and started to scan the path she took and about a half hour later I got a high meter read and pinpointing it with the MXT came in as a very small target at about an inch deep. Moving the grass aside revealed this very pretty sterling silver celtic design ring! Britney was super thrilled with the recovery as this was a Christmas gift from a very close friend, and Nessie was right on top of this since it’s the first “celtic treasure find”…. putting an end to the conundrum.

An Afternoon With Grandma

Got a call from Isabell last night saying she thought her ring came off while playing with her grandchildren at a local park. Upon arriving this afternoon I set up my MXT and began to scan from the grass area to the playground equipment. Nothing came up in the grass but over in the mulch area I got a huge no doubt signal. Moving the mulch chips aside revealed this very stunning white gold with diamonds ring! She was very happy that her ring was found as it was her mom’s and given to her years ago. Now her thoughts were filled with the great time she had with the grandchildren and less about losing part of the family!

I received a contact from Linda about a lost ring in the sand at the beach. Her husband had given her his ring to hold when he went down to the water, and while he was gone, she flipped her hand, and the ring that she had placed on her finger went into the soft sand, and disappeared. I was free, and left immediately to do the search to make sure that it would be found.

When I got to the beach it was very windy, and I found Linda and her husband David on the berm that the county erects yearly to stop any possibility of flooding during the stormy Winter months. They had not left the area of the loss, so I knew that the search should be successful, it was just a matter of not being confined to a box search, but allowing for any possibility to have occurred. I began the search, and went over a shoe they had placed as a border, and got a signal. I moved the shoe, and dug, but came up empty. Thinking that maybe the shoe might have been the signal, I went out for one pass of the grid, and came back. I went over once more where the shoe had been, the signal came up again, I dug again, and there it was, David’s ring. The place where the ring was lost was small, so I was very certain it would be recovered. I then found out that they had only been married one month, so Linda must have been heart broken to have lost David’s ring. Well it was my pleasure to restore some joy in their lives that day!

Ryan contacted me about his wedding ring lost in the surf while he was swimming at the beach. It was a matching ring to his wife’s, and not one that he wanted to lose. I let him know that we had to wait a while for the tide to drop to allow a thorough search of the area, because the tide was high when the ring was lost.

When I got there Ryan met me, and took me to the area of the loss. He showed me what had happened, and where he thought the ring came off. I began my grid up and down the beach, and into the water, as I had to be sure to cover all the sand possible. The beach was sanded in, so there was a lack of signals, just a lot of quiet as I was searching. I kept making my grid, line after line, and fighting the moving water as I went into the surf, then after a long stretch, I got a good signal, dug, and there it was, Ryan’s ring. He had left, because he had a party to attend, so he was not able to see me bring it up out of the sand, but I sent him a text with a picture of his ring and he got right back to me. We arranged to make the return, on their way to the party, and ended a very happy day.

Josh’s friend called me from the beach to ask if I could help find Josh’s ring which flew off his finger while he was playing football.

This was a very quick recovery, I located the ring on my second signal from my detector. It helped that they were able to narrow down the search area to a small piece of beach.
