Deep in the Grass – Class Ring Recovery Success

Dan reached out to me via email, wondering if I could help recover a large class ring that he believed he lost somewhere in his yard while fertilizing the grass. He explained that he had been wearing the ring on his pinky finger, which had reduced feeling due to a previous surgery. He was certain the ring was on when he started the yard work—and gone when he finished.

I assured him this was a type of search I could definitely help with, but I let him know I couldn’t commit to a specific time right away due to several other scheduled recoveries. He was understanding and agreed the ring would be safe in the yard until we could coordinate our schedules.

I dug down into the thick, tall grass and there it was, buried right down to the dirt!

Dan happened to be inside with a refrigerator repairman, so I quietly snapped a few photos and packed up my equipment. As I was finishing up, he spotted me out front. I held up the ring, and he couldn’t believe his eyes! Dan was overjoyed to be reunited with the class ring he had worn for many, many decades.

Another happy ending—and another meaningful piece returned to its rightful owner.

Lost Ring Recovered in the Water – LBI Night Swim

Chloe reached out to me late one weekend evening, hoping I could help recover a special ring that had been handmade by a close friend. She explained that she had been doing a night swim off a dock in Long Beach Island when, while paddling away from the dock, she felt the ring slip right off her hand.

Water recoveries can be particularly tricky, with constantly changing conditions. I asked Chloe some key questions about the loss: how deep the water was, what type of bottom (mud, sand, etc.), and if she could pinpoint the exact moment the ring fell off. Thankfully, she was confident in all three, so I made the decision to begin the search the following morning.

We met at the property and walked out to the dock together. Chloe helped mark the location by tossing a few small pebbles where she believed the ring had come off. I climbed down the ladder into the water and began searching. The water depth matched what she described — which is rare!

After a few junk signals from old can tabs and pop tops, I finally hit a clean, sweet tone. I was almost certain this was it. After a couple of scoops (in very murky water), I reached into my scoop — and there it was! I held up the ring and Chloe’s face lit up with disbelief and joy. Her smile said it all.

I carefully handed up my gear, climbed back onto the dock, dried off, and we snapped a few celebratory photos. Another successful recovery — and another meaningful item reunited with its owner.

I was contacted by Brian regarding a lost key fob somewhere on a local beach. His daughter had been out the previous night walking along the shoreline, enjoying the full moon, when the key fob unknowingly fell from her purse.

The search area was quite large since she had covered a significant distance during her walk. Upon arrival, I began in the most probable drop zone but didn’t receive any signals.

I expanded the search northbound for approximately one block, attempting to follow what appeared to be her footprints, but still no luck. I then returned to the original area and searched closer to the waterline—again with no success.

Re-evaluating the situation, I decided to follow another set of tracks heading south that seemed consistent with her path. Roughly 50 feet into that direction, I received a strong signal. One scoop later, the lost key fob was recovered.

As is often the case, the item was located in the last area searched—but persistence paid off.

The key fob was successfully returned, and another client was relieved to have their property back.

While enjoying a vacation in Mexico, I noticed a Facebook post from a gentleman named Tom who was desperately searching for help recovering his wedding ring. The ring had bounced off the end of his dock while he was feeding the seagulls and disappeared into the river below.

I reached out and let him know I would gladly help once I returned home. Tom said that would be fine and planned to contact me in about a week.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.

Shortly after the loss, we went into a deep freeze and both the river and bay froze solid for nearly three weeks. The ring sat beneath the ice the entire time.

Once conditions improved, Tom contacted me and we carefully went over all the details — water depth, bottom composition, current conditions, and any obstacles near the dock. He mentioned there were a few rocks at the end of the pier where the ring had fallen. I didn’t anticipate that being much of an issue.

But when I arrived and suited up, I quickly realized there were far more than “a few rocks.”

For quite some time, the family had been tossing softball-sized rocks off the end of the dock, unknowingly creating what looked like an artificial reef directly below where the ring had fallen. The rocks were piled high at the exact drop zone.

Thankfully, I received a strong signal almost immediately — and it was the only signal in the area. The target was located right at the edge of the rock pile.

Working carefully, I had to move several rocks by hand in frigid water to isolate the signal. After six to eight precise scoops — making sure no rocks interfered — I finally lifted the scoop and saw gold.

Tom stood there in disbelief as his wedding ring emerged from the water.

We were extremely fortunate the ring had landed on the outer edge of the rock pile. Had it fallen deeper into the center of the stones, this recovery would have been far more complicated.

A successful recovery after three weeks under ice — and a great way to start the new year.

Kenny’s vacation at the Jersey Shore took an unexpected turn when he realized his wedding ring was missing after a great day at the beach. Despite searching around for a while, he came up empty-handed and reluctantly headed back to the house. But instead of accepting the loss, Kenny reached out to me for help.

I suggested he quickly retrace his steps while the location was still fresh in his mind and drop a pin on Google Maps to mark the spot where he thought the ring was lost. The ring was lost the prior day, so this was important as the landscape changes rapidly at the beach. When I arrived, we walked together to the location, and after marking the spot in the sand, I asked Kenny to show me any pictures he had from that day. One picture, in particular, stood out, helping me line up the exact area where he had been. Interestingly, it was a few feet off from where the pin was dropped, so I decided to start my search where both points intersected.

It didn’t take long before my metal detector picked up a strong signal. I dug into the sand, and there it was—Kenny’s wedding ring! His daughter stood by with wide eyes, amazed that we had found it so quickly. Neither of them really believed it would be possible.

When people ask how successful I am, I always tell them it depends on how well they remember where their item was lost. But in the end, if you get me in the correct spot, with a little help from my metal detector, no ring can truly hide.

Margaret reached out to me about recovering her bangle bracelet, which had slipped off her wrist while she was cleaning the windows on her boat. I was contacted by Jennifer after being tagged multiple times on a social media post. Jennifer explained that her husband had taken a surfing lesson on his birthday on Queen St beach in Cape May. I received a message from Ken the other day. He explained that his wife was sitting with their daughter just at the edge of the water on the beach in Wildwood Crest . The pair were chatting about his wife, Shelly’s, ring which she had just had repaired and had taken it off to show to her daughter. While doing so, a larger wave rushed in and startled the pair causing the ring to be flung behind them towards the upper beach as they were facing the water when it happened. The ring landed in the shallow water and disappeared. Shelly was devastated, and the family searched for hours trying to locate the ring. Luckily, Ken, Shelly’s husband, did an excellent job noting the approximate location and took note of the time as the tide was moving in. We discussed the event a bit and decided to wait until the tide was heading back out so the water would be at a reasonable depth. I met the couple on the beach at just about dark around 9pm and began searching. About 15 minutes later I heard the signal I was searching for, 1 scoop later the ring was back on Shelly’s finger. She was elated to say the least! The couple informed me that Ken had proposed to Shelly over 40 years prior just a few blocks down beach. Another relieved & happy couple!

I was tagged by several folks in a post on Cape May Live. The poster was asking for people to keep an eye out for her husband’s gold ring that slipped off in the surf. I messaged the couple and we chatted back and forth about what exactly happened and where. She was able to outline the specific area and time of day that the loss occurred. Timing wise, I felt that the best chances would be during the low tide cycle the following morning. I took the 5 minute ride for home yesterday morning and began searching. After about 1 hour or so I got the signal I was searching for and out popped the ring from thigh deep surf. The couple confirmed the inscribed date and picked up the ring yesterday afternoon. They both thought the ring was “gone forever” after 27 years of marriage. Another happy couple!

I received a message from Genevieve Sunday afternoon explaining that she had lost her wedding ring in the sand while at the beach with her family. She had placed her ring in the cupholder of her beach chair to apply sunscreen. Later, her husband folded and relocated their belongings as the tide was moving. He had no idea that his wifes ring was in the chair when he folded the chair and once folded the ring disappeared into the sand. After the couple realized what had happened they began frantically searching for the ring. Other beach goers saw them searching and pitched in to search as well, even one of the lifeguards lent a hand! After a while, the group came up empty handed. Thats when Genevieve reached out for help. Usually I dont travel to Brigantine on Sundays as Northbound traffic can be horrendous but I could tell that Genevieve was upset and really needed some help. I took the ride up and met with the couple on 31st street beach. After a brief discussion I began searching the areas outlined by her husband. About 45 minutes later I had her ring in the scoop. Genevieve explained that the ring was so special as it contained diamonds from her grandmothers wedding ring and was very special to the couple! The entire beach was thrilled to see the ring!
