Lost Ring after Tropical Storm – Orange Beach, AL – FOUND!

Yesterday after work I got a call from a nice man named Nathaniel from Huntsville, AL. He and his wife were staying at Orange Beach and had already ridden out Tropical Storm Cristobal so they were really ready to get down on the beach and do some exploring. Sometimes after a big storm there will be tidal pools left after the surge takes out a bunch of sand and leaves the water in it’s place and that’s what Nathaniel was enjoying, throwing football back and forth when his wedding ring came flying off. When Nathaniel called me I went through my standard list of questions and the only thing I was worried about was that a gentleman on the beach with a detector had helped them look in the water for about 45 mins to no avail. It turns out that this was a Good Samaritan from out of town and might not have been familiar with hunting in saltwater. I told Nathaniel that I would be there in about an hr and not to worry that even if it took awhile I was prepared for a night hunt. I was secretly thinking that it wouldn’t take long to grid the tidal pool but when I got there I saw that it was easily the largest one I had ever seen on the beach. It was over 100yds by 100yds. Wow. 😳  Luckily, Nathaniel is a very intelligent guy and had immediately marked his position with landmarks and then walked straight out and marked his position on the sand with a beach chair. We had a great starting point. We went over a few more questions and as the rain poured down, I started my search. I could hear the disturbed areas in my machine where they had been digging, looking for it so with every step I was hoping to hear that gold tone. The first try was a no go so I asked a few more questions about whether he was throwing the ball hard or lobbing it, etc.  I expanded my search and started to see that tell tale sign of doubt and worry on Nathaniel’s face. I told him not to worry that I even had another detector in the car and if I had to I could grid out the entire area. He nodded and smiled a bit as I finished up the larger area with no luck. I came back over and asked him what he was thinking while he was watching me search and he said he was worried. Nathaniel is a big strong guy and he said he was throwing the ball hard so I asked him if he was throwing a tight spiral. He said of course 😄 so I told him that if he had followed through the ring may have flung to the other side towards shore. He said he had thought of that but he didn’t see it splash and he felt like it just had to be the other way. I smiled and politely told him my favorite line that “if they knew where it was, they wouldn’t need me.”  He laughed and agreed to let me do a bit of searching towards the waters edge. I went 3 feet and got a 12-37 which is usually a zinc penny on my machine but I never pass a good signal while searching for a ring and I always dig it very gently so I won’t damage the ring just in case. It came up in the scoop so easily that it didn’t make a sound and when I held it over to Nathaniel he just yelled, “YOU ARE THE MAN!!!”  Haha, that feeling of elation never gets old. It turns out that it was Nathaniel’s wife’s birthday and she was at dinner with family hoping that he would make it in time. When I found out I insisted that we make a run for it and they could send me pics later. As you can see, he made the dinner and I’m pretty sure his wife liked her birthday present. 👍😃. Lost Gold Ring Found In Yard In Detroit Michigan

From Father To Son….

…..Is quite an often spoken phrase most of us have heard perhaps at family gatherings. More commonly it’s referred to a particular trait, habit or skill that the younger man has naturally developed from the elder person. No doubt that the pictured gentleman has acquired much knowledge and skills from his father, but this story is quite the opposite. Something very sentimental to him was lost a few days ago.
Going back 30 years, shortly after his father’s passing he received his ring. Quite stunned and thankful when presented with it, for a few moments memories of the ring came to mind, memories of him, his dad and the ring his Dad was so proud of always being a part of what they did together from a single age all the way to manhood such as fishing, playing cards, catching a football, working on a car, and theatrical gesturing while socializing with friends and family. Now in the past 30 years the ring has become a huge part of his life, work and family in the same way as his dad cherished it.
As the COVID-19 virus restrictions are being lifted, many people are hurrying going about tasks to catch up on lost time. Somewhere in the yard while gardening the family ring slipped off. When I got on site I set up my MXT and ran a grid pattern. He and his wife thought the ring was sterling silver so I was looking for a high meter signal but would check all signals that sounded solid. No high read signals came thru but as I swept over some high foliage I got an all so familiar gold signal. Brushing the new mulch aside revealed this very handsome white gold ring!
His back was to me so I signaled to the wife that I got it. I said to him hey how’d this big chunk of metal get here, it’s interfering with the detector and has to go. He spun around and angrily marched over, looking down to pull it up he realized it was his ring! Lifting it from the earth he held it to the sky and said thank you! to his Dad looking down upon us. Happy with the ring back, and it’s gold!, he’s anticipating a wonderful Father’s day and a new story to share with his children and grandchildren for years to come.

Wedding Band recovered in Long Branch by Dennis Burlingame

We all here at Ring Finders work together to make sure people are reunited with their items. With that Edward Cropski got a call about a lost ring in Long Branch but he’s a good distance away, he called Matty St Germain and he isn’t that close either so that where I come in. Matty asked if I would go ( i’m only bout 25 minutes away ) and I said yes. I called John and told him I was on my way. Seems John took off his wedding band to put on lotion, laid it on his lap then got up to get something and the ring sunk into the sand. After he noticed it gone he tried to find it with his hands with no luck. He found Ring Finders on google and called Ed getting the ball rolling. I got to the beach and he met me and took me where he was sitting. First target was a penny then swinging the detector a few more times I heard the tone I was waiting for and told John your ring is right here and sure enough I dug one scope and there was his ring. He couldn’t believe it. Another happy ending to his day on the beach. Great feeling giving back.

High School ring recovered in Belmar NJ by Dennis Burlingame

Got an email from Rachael while enjoying the day at the beach she laid her high school ring on her towel then decided to move her spot. Forgetting she put it there it got lost in the sand when it fell off. I went right down to the beach after talking to her getting information as to where she was sitting ( she had already left the beach ) and couldn’t find it. Trying to remember and give me an area,  she was off some distance from where she really was. Called back and asked for more information she could think of. So with her email and new info I made arrangements with fellow RingFinder Matty St Germain ( 2 detectors are better than one sometimes, what ever it take to reunite someone with their lost item ) to head out together that night because he had a recovery himself a few towns away. We split up the area we figure it should be and Matty came up with the ring. Sorry to say we weren’t as lucky in finding Matty’s  recovery but that was lost 3 days earlier and the guy wasn’t sure how or where he lost it. Met up with Rachael 2 days later to reunite her with her ring. Her smile says it all, another happy ending

**** David’s wife Arsine had put her wedding ring in a pocket of her jacket for safekeeping while at Huntington Beach, CA.. Just before leaving the beach she went to retrieve the ring and it was missing. She was sure it was lost somewhere in the sand.

After a hour of searching the sand with no luck, David called me to ask for help. I live within 8 miles of their location so it was a short time till I showed up where the loss occurred.

I received a call from a coworker that his friends daughter had recently lost her iPhone in Greenlake Seattle. She had been sitting on the T dock when her iPhone slipped out of her pocket and sank to the bottom of the lake. I learned it was a new iPhone so there was a good chance this phone had some basic water protections built in. We had high hopes that the phone would still be working after the recovery. After exchanging a few txt messages with Grece and a few screenshot it was very clear where the phone was lost. I told her she would not need to be present during the search. I agreed to head out in the next days to recover her phone and contact her with my results after my efforts.

Upon arriving at Greenlake it was moderately busy with walkers enjoying the park. The weather was absolutely amazing with fresh air pleasantly blowing lightly. The swimming areas of the lake had not been reopened due to social distancing policies so the activity on the lake waters was at a minimum with a few paddlers and some random kids swimming. Having the day at the dock I planned on prioritizing Grece’s iPhone recovery and then spending some additional time doing clean up and treasure hunting at this site.  When time allows it’s alway a great opportunity to pack out some garbage from our local waters. 

Our Greenlake park is extremely popular serving over one million visitors per year. Knowing that this is a very high traffic park and a hand full our our local underwater treasure hunting buddies visit this site often I was not prepared to find as many goodies under the dock waters as I did!

Engagement Ring Found by Owner

Not all ring finder stories end with a happy ending. As hard as the members of The Ring Finders try, some treasures just aren’t found and returned. Then there are the stories that have a very happy ending that members had nothing to do with. This is one of those stories.

I received a referral off of a Face Book group that I responded to. Jessica had lost her engagement ring while her and her fiancé, Oscar, were on a 6 mile bike ride. I contacted Jessica and offered to help. I had a couple of appointments the next day, so I told her I could come by at 4 pm to start a search of part of the route. She explained that she and Oscar were leaving to go back home at 4 the next day and wanted to know if I could come earlier. So we set it up that I’d be there at 9 am and we’d take a golf cart ride along the same route as their bike ride, so I could get a feel for the search area.

Everything went as planned and I was there at 9. We jumped on the golf cart and started the adventure. During the route, Jessica was showing me where they were riding in the streets, going with the flow of traffic, or on the sidewalks. I confirmed Jessica was wearing the ring on her left hand. Jessica told me she had put suntan lotion on before they started their bike ride. She also said that towards the end of the route, she had shaken her hands a few times to get the circulation back after grasping the handlebars for so long. We both came to the conclusion that if the ring was anywhere, it would be in the last half of the route. We also concluded the ring should be in the middle of the street, because they only rode on the sidewalk in two places and that was only for a block or two. Jessica and Oscar had retraced the entire route on foot and golf cart, searching the street area as soon as they got home and Jessica realized the ring was gone. So, I’m thinking the ring flew off her finger when she shook her hand, bounced and rolled across the road and ended up on the side of the road or in the grass areas. By 9:30, I started my search and covered about 2 miles of the route working both sides of the street before I had to leave for my appointments. I made it back at 3 pm and covered another 2 miles, again working both sides of the street. Right around 5 pm, I called it a day, planning on being back early the next morning and finish up the whole back half of the route.

At 9:08 pm, I received a text from Jessica, “Jim I can’t believe it but I just found my ring!!! It was inside my laptop?!! I don’t know how it got in there!!!! I was going through everything again and I noticed my laptop wasn’t closed all the way and I opened it and there it was!! I’m so relieved.” I immediately responded telling her how happy I was for her, and I truly was.

It’s completely and totally irrelevant how the ring got back to where it belongs, and as I said, I had nothing to do with it. The important thing is, her ring is back where it belongs. She is one very excited, happy young lady with a huge smile on her face making for a very happy ending!

I got a call from Francisco letting me know he had lost his car keys in the sand at the beach, and was hoping I could help. There was no way for him to get home, so I let him know that I would leave immediately to do a search for him.

When I got to the area we met, and Francisco and his girlfriend took me out to the spot they believed the keys to have been lost. I began my grid, and made quite a few passes with the finding of a lot of trash metal, but no keys. They then motioned me over to another area, thinking the keys might have been lost there. I began a new search, and during the first pass, got a solid signal, scooped the sand, and had his keys in my hand. I held them up for him to see, and he being so happy to have them back, came over and gave me a big hug. It was so nice to be able to help!

Franck contacted me and told me the day before he lost his footing on the marina dock and fell into the water. He managed to grab at something in the water and just happened to save his glasses but his mobile phone slipped out of his pocket and landed in the silty bottom of our puget sound waters. Lady’s Yellow Gold Band Lost in Myrtle Beach – Found and Returned

I got a call from Joe Denton, NMB Minelab distributor, about a lady who had lost her Gold band in the dry sand in North Myrtle Beach. He gave me her number and I called her. I introduced myself and learned her name was Elizabeth and she had lost a yellow gold band. She told me she was in North Myrtle on 21st Ave North, right next to a life guard stand. No problem, I grabbed my Equinox 800 and headed out for the 10 minute drive to the beach. After finding a place to park on a busy Sunday, I made my way out to the beach. When I got out there, I called Elizabeth saying I was there and holding my detector up in the air so she could see me. She didn’t, I gave her a couple of landmarks like the banana boat ride. She didn’t see it. Ok, I must be in the wrong spot. I asked her again about being in North Myrtle Beach. She said she’d ask the life guard, and I asked to talk to her. The life guard said they were about 10 blocks up from the sky wheel on 21st Ave North. Ok, she wasn’t in North Myrtle Beach, she was in Myrtle Beach. This happens all the time with visitors; both Myrtle and North Myrtle have exactly the same street numbers. I explained that since she was in Myrtle, I needed to call the TRF for Myrtle, Matt Fry. I tried his number a couple of time, with no answer, so I called his wife. I explained the situation and she gave me permission to take the call. Matt and I have a great working relationship, so if one of us gets the other one’s call we’ll work it out.

I called Elizabeth back, told her I’d be there in about 25 minutes, and headed south. Once I got there, I went through the same routine of calling her and holding up my detector. This time she found me. She led me over to the spot and explained that the ring was dropped in the sand right off the blanket that was spread out. She told me the ring was yellow gold, but in my head I’m thinking white gold. So I’m looking for a VDI (visual display identifier) numbers between 8-10. I immediately got a VDI of 17, and passed over it. Took another step, it was like dah; I confirmed yellow gold, turned around and took out 2 scoops of sand. Bingo, I had it in the scoop. As I’m showing it to Elizabeth, another young lady was walking towards us and Elizabeth said “he found it.” This young lady’s name was Jessica and the actual owner of the ring. Jessica said she had taken her rings off so Elizabeth could put them in her bag, and this one was dropped in the sand. Elizabeth felt horrible, so both ladies started digging through the sand with no luck. Elizabeth had originally called Joe to rent a detector, and Joe sent her my way. All’s well that ends well!
