Lost White Gold Ring Found in Bloomfield Michigan

  • from Detroit (Michigan, United States)

Don’t Sweat the FALL Stuff….

…As the last of the leaves have fallen and autumn’s still callin’, there was a few more tasks Jay was eager to complete before the holidays approached. After splitting a few logs, he was left with untangling the Christmas lights and installing them throughout the yard. With darkness closing in he quickly threaded the wires through the bushes. Stepping back to take in a wider view, he turned them on and admired his work. Back inside the house he noticed his ring was missing. Terribly concerned, he spent a restless night wondering where it was. I arrived the next day, chatted with his wife and got the details of where to look for the ring while he was at work. Using my MXT metal detector I did a quick grid search around the perimeter in the grass with no luck. Scanning in closer to the bushes I got some random pieces of aluminum. Continuing along the sidewalk leading to the house I got a solid signal in the middle of two bushes. Using my pin-pointer I got a signal and reaching down the wire I pulled it from under some leaves and saw his ring over one of the Christmas lights! I was thrilled and ran to the door. When his wife opened the door, I held up the ring and as she saw it in my hand, she smiled saying how excited and relieved she was that it was found and the overwhelming thoughts of where it was had been solved. I said let’s “fall” it a day and assured her that there’s always someone and a way to solve a problem……then she said…. and today it was theringfinders!

Ring lost swimming at Taupo Bay. Found!

  • from Paihia (New Zealand)

I occasionally get calls from people that I have previously recovered lost rings for, usually along the lines of, “I’ve done it again…”, or, “A friend/neighbour has lost their…”
Krista phoned me to say that a guest had been swimming at Taupo Bay and had lost his Gucci ring in almost exactly the same spot that I had recovered her own treasured heirloom ring at the start of this year.

It was late afternoon and the light would soon be fading, however the tide was falling so I had to try and catch the first low tide that night.
I arrived at Taupo Bay and was relieved to see that this popular surf beach had virtually no break today – I knew the area of loss would be exposed at low tide, however that wouldn’t be until about 10pm so I waded out and made a start.
The water hadn’t warmed to summer temperatures yet, but was definitely warm enough that the wetsuit wasn’t needed. A very strong cross current was feeding a rip nearby and sand was being visibly moved along the beach and at times sucked from under my feet. One of the reasons that water recoveries have to be carried out as soon as possible.

As I worked the search patterns Hayden, the `lossee`, and Krista settled in to watch the worlds most boring spectator sport.
The high probability area yielded nothing and as both tide and night fell, I started to expand the search out to 20m…30m… back across the area they had been swimming.
Several hours and multiple overlapping grid patterns later, I was convinced it wasn’t where it was supposed to be (they almost never are).
The others had long since left me to it so I texted to advise a no-find… So far.

On the drive home, I replayed the search over and over in my mind. Re-analysing the circumstances of loss against the fact that the ring was not located despite a near 100% probability of detection over the entire swimming area.
Hayden said he had been sweeping his hand through the water, and he had felt it come off.
The ring had to have been airborne, unseen by Hayden – hidden among the water spray/droplets.
Stated to be ‘silver’, I have found that this can mean it just looks silver and can be anything from platinum, white gold, or titanium. All with very different densities and responses. As an example, if you had two rings in your hand, white gold and titanium, and threw them, the gold would travel much, much further than the titanium due to the greater mass.

How far would a ring go? The original search area had discounted the lighter titanium.

Back on the road early next morning for the hour drive to Taupo Bay again in order to catch the next tide. When I don’t find a ring it becomes a personal challenge. It’s partially this tenacity which enables me to find rings which others have tried for and given up, or missed, due to inexperience or unsuitable detectors.

I had the luxury of daylight and a large tide window this time.

Some time was spent painstakingly eliminating several dozen unlikely but must-be-confirmed signals in amongst a buried jumble of fragments of reinforced concrete and other ‘hot’ rocks with high metal content under the sand. All metal targets were proven to be trash.
Then I moved onto a wider area search based on a couple of underarm throws of my test rings – in the opposite direction to where they had been swimming.
30 minutes later I got a very clear silver tone – The scoop went in, and from 30cm under the sand on the edge of yesterdays rip current emerged Hayden’s lost sterling silver ring.

I love sending texts that simply say, “FOUND!” – They’re usually followed immediately after by my phone ringing with an excited and unbelieving voice at the other end 🙂

Lost gold ring at a Christmas tree farm in Langley

I received a text message yesterday evening in regards to lost gold and diamond ring. This was a young ladies wedding band, she went on to tell me the story of the ring and how important it was to her and how sad she was that she had lost it. The good news was she was most certain it was lost at a Christmas tree farm in Langley. The story of the ring as it was a gift from her late father to give to her daughter one day, these stories always pulls at the heart strings.

We set up a time to meet in the morning, the owners were so kind to let us go in and do the search, after meeting the young couple, and hearing their story about where they believe the ring was lost and for the fact that husband pinned the location where they cut the tree down and where they believed the ring may have come off her finger ,that was such a blessing he marked the location!

Most times people forget the most important things and that’s a landmark or in this situation, pinning the location so that he could get back to it. Let’s face it there’s a lot of trees there and it would be so difficult to find the exact location which is so important when you’re looking for something that small. After a short time searching the ring was found under a Christmas tree, it was a good thing that nobody had cut that one down because they would’ve easily seen the ring laying underneath it.

So many factors play in these searches, and one is asking the right questions in order to get into the area and after listening carefully to her story there was two locations I was very interested in and I started in the one I felt I had the best chance… It only took minutes to find her ring & smile.

>>> Russ called me asking for help to find his platinum wedding ring. He had been playing with his dog in the backyard. Soon after going inside the house he discovered his platinum wedding ring was not on his finger. Although he didn’t feel the ring come off his finger he believed the ring had to be somewhere in the backyard.

He used a rake to try dislodge the ring from the grass. After several hours, he gave up and went to the internet for ideas on how to search for a ring. While online he found TheRingFinders site and my contact information. He called me that afternoon. I found out that he could be home to let me search the small back yard grass and planters.

After arriving at his home in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA., Russ showed me a nice grass backyard with planters all around the perimeter. It looked promising as the lawn was deep grass, perfect to hide a heavy platinum ring.

I gave Russ a bit of a tutorial on my detector and how I would begin my search. He understood that it was going to be a tedious process and he went inside the house. My plan was to eliminate the grass then attack the ground level planters. Well, I was three quarters through the grass area when I took a swing into one of the planters, BOOM!! a nice tone in my earphones that I had to inspect with my pinpointer. Russ’s ring was no longer lost.

I went to their back door to inform them that I had found the ring. It was still in its hiding place, so I directed them to the location. After pointing out where it was they still couldn’t see it. It’s amazing how the silver color of platinum, silver or white gold can almost act as camouflage in dirt or any shaded location. It was a happy occasion for all of us. Technology wins again..

March 2022 Joe contacted me asking if I could do a search for his wife, Jenn’s, lost wedding ring. He stated they had a neighborhood location they thought the ring might have been lost at while getting out of the car.

Right now we’re with Joe and Jennifer. Can you share a little bit about how we arrived at this point?

I lost my ring in my car visiting some friends just up the road from our home. I was the passenger and Joe was driving. We stopped and as he went in to pickup the pizza I think that is when I took my ring off, placed it in my lap and put some hand lotion on. When he came back he handed me the pizza boxes and I put them in my lap. Looking back that was likely enough distraction to have caused me to forget about my ring. When we reached our friends home I got out of  the car and I’m pretty certain this is where I lost the ring.  The next day, Saturday when I realized my ring was gone it made since to me that this is what happened because it’s happened to me in the past with the same ring using lotion in the car.

Watch this episode of Lost Item Recovery and see how we track Jenn’s lost diamond wedding ring down.

Gerry called asking if I would be available to do a search for him. I said I was, and asked what the problem was. He told me he had been gardening 2 weeks prior, and because of his recent weight loss, his ring of 46 years somehow slipped off in the process. He and his wife had searched over and over with no luck. I let him know that I was on my way, and was happy to help him out.

When I arrived Gerry showed me 5 small trough planters that he had been working in, and a possible hedge row that he thought it might have fallen in. I began with the planters pushing my pin pointer into the soft potting soil to try and get a signal from the ring, but was not able to find it in the planters. I was getting ready to look in the hedge row, when Gerry brought over a trash can lid with some potting soil and dead plant material. I lifted the plants and shook them, and then put my pin pointer into the soil when my pin pointer fired up. There it was, and I held the ring up for Gerry. He looked surprised, and told me he had searched that dirt at least twice. Well I was glad to get this token of love that he had for 46 years back to him.

Lost Platinum Wedding Band at Lanikai Beach…FOUND!!!

  • from O‘ahu (Hawaii, United States)

This Ring Find began on 15 September when I got a text from Jean from Los Angeles, California and was on vacation on Oahu.  It said, “I lost a platinum ring at Lanikai Beach last Saturday 09/10 at 1-2pm while snorkeling in 6ft deep water (tide is low intensity sand hard and water clear but could not find it…maybe it is stuck in a coral hole.  Please let me know what of think)”  This was going to be a scuba hunt as during a high tide it could be 8 feet deep.  Jean sent some excellent pics of the area so on 23 September I commenced a scuba hunt after the jellyfish invasion the few days prior.  Man-O-Wars and Box Jellies are the worst at Lanikai!  The beach access turned out to be the extreme right side of the grid search so I started there.  As I worked my way north I detected the sand and did a thorough visual search of the top of each coral head.  The area was really sterile so not many junk targets to dig.  About 20 minutes into the dive as I was exiting a dense coral area I got a nice #9 on the Nox and in a few fans of the sand a Platinum Ring came into view.  When I got back to my car I texted a pic to Jean who was back in LA.  He asked if I could verify it had a triangle, heart and circle engraved inside the band.  Sure enough it did.  Jean didn’t want to chance losing his ring in the mail and asked if I could hold it until his return trip in December.  Well today Jean & his lovely wife Clemence arrived on island and Jean got his ring back.  Love the Texas hat.  Aloha to Jean & Clemence!

Diamond Stud Earring Lost in the Sand at Manhattan Beach…Found and Returned

I received a call from Michelle who told me she had lost a diamond stud earring in the sand at the beach that day. It was getting dark, and I asked if she would be able to find the area that it was lost in, as diamond stud earrings are one of the most difficult pieces of jewelry to find because there is such a small amount of metal attached to them., She said she knew exactly where it happened, and I told her that I would leave shortly to do the search.

When I got to the beach Michelle’s husband Austin met me to show the location of the search. In the dark we walked out, and oh boy, when considering a small item like a stud earring the beach looks so vast. Well we got to the area where Michelle had told her husband to look, and very wisely I could see the she had drawn two lines to look between (about 10 feet apart), because she felt it come out of her ear. At my request Austin had brought the matching earring in a Ziplock bag, and I tested my detector on it. I had to be within one inch for the detector to find it, and I was hoping that it did not get buried too deep. I started my search, and was finding some trouble with the black sand which was causing my super sensitive detector to sound off every couple of inches which I would have to check. I worked slowly towards the other end of the area. When I got to the end I got a bit more solid signal, reached down and brushed the sand away when just under about 1/2 inch of sand out pops Michelle’s earring. I thought about how amazing it was to find it on such a large beach in the darkness of the night, and then held it up for Austin. He came over likewise amazed. Well he then told me they were from Colorado, and were going back in a couple of days. He did not want his picture taken, so I stood in for him.

Lost Set of keys in Rathdrum Idaho…FOUND!!

  • from Spokane (Washington, United States)

I often wonder if the stories about The Ring Finders that I share with people ever stick in their memory banks. After reciving a text message about lost keys from an old co-worker, I knew that my story telling had paid off. George, the old co-worker, had been playing in the snow with his family. After a few flips and snow balls thrown, his keys went missing.  George looked and dug in the snow that day and the next morning without finding the keys. As he sat in the snow pondering how to get his keys back, he remembered a guy he had worked with that metal detected. A quick text reconnected our paths and I made my way to Idaho to find his lost keys.  After saying “hi” to George’s newborn baby girl, we both made our way up to where they were playing. The search area was where they had made foot prints and body prints in the two and a half feet of snow. I made a quick pass around the outside of the tracks without hearinga single signal. Near the middle of the tracks I got a negative signal. George started digging where I pinpointed.  He quickly uncovered his keys. Saving George three hundred dollars for the replacement cost of his car key and seeing a friend again, was well worth the trip.

… Brianna lost her phone at San Clemente Beach, CA. She was sure it was at the beach after she discovered it missing when she got to the parking lot near the pier. She and her friends were at a fire pit and several other places in a couple hundred yards of main beach. It could have also been lost at the children’s swings. Brianna offered to meet me at the location but I felt it wouldn’t be necessary.

I was able to drive the 20 mile drive to the San Clemente main beach an hour after the call. My best guess of where to start would be the swings. As it worked out the phone did not show up at the swings. An hour and a half later of grid searching towards the fire pit the iPhone showed up a couple feet from the fire pit.

I called Brianna and she was able to drive to the beach to pick up her phone.. Another happy lady and very grateful to have her phone after 24 hours without it.
