While swimming with her family visiting from Texas, Sue noticed that her gold chain had somehow opened and that her pendant had dropped off. Well, the rest is history and a picture is worth a thousand word. The pendant found and returned, back in its rightful place.

Lost Diamond Ring Westport, Massachusetts
A lost ring in Westport, Massachusetts, brought me to Horseneck Beach State Reservation. Adjacent to the cow farm I was hired to search, lie hundreds of acres of barrier beach and salt marsh. As I drove through, I quickly realize why this particular area is one of the most popular in the Massachusetts State Park System. Miles of pebble stone beach overlooking Buzzards Bay make this a one-of-a-kind destination for bird watching, camping, swimming, fishing, boating, biking, and many other recreational activities. After a couple of hours of driving and a bit of tourism, I finally arrived at the cow farm to search a tomato patch for a lost diamond ring. I was greeted by the ring owner’s parents and was provided a hand-drawn map of the landmarks and activities of that dark day when the ring was lost. The loving family’s effort to find the ring and the touching backstory gave me an unbelievable drive to find what is more than just a lost ring.
The Backstory
“Sam worked with his mom and my sister to create this ring for me – the stone he chose is my birthstone, aquamarine, it’s also the color of his eyes. His eyes are a window to his soul, and every time I look at the stone, I think about looking into his eyes and my gratitude for his soul EXPLODES (and all sort of other cheesy cliche things that my heart genuinely feels for this INCREDIBLE MAN).
Sam and I hiked a quarter of a mile into a rustic cabin that we’ve enjoyed staying at before in Hope, ME, last March, right around my bday. We trudged up in 1-2 foot snow to a cabin with no heat or running water. Sam decided to hike up in his flimsy. Sneakers rather than put his boots on. In retrospect, he worried about the ring falling out of his pocket in the process of changing his shoes. We got everything up to the cabin, started a fire in the woodstove, and we began to warm our buns by the fire. Then Sam turned to me and said, “Oh no, I forgot something down at the car.” To which I responded with, “Sorry, love, there’s no way we’re going back down there.” Then he said, “Oh wait, no, it’s right here!” and got down on a knee in front of the stove and proposed to me. We both cried and enjoyed a night of reverie. I had planned to propose to him the next day, and did! A joint proposal – something I feel captures our union and partnership, the desire to have the other heard and seen.”
The Search
Luckily, the ground was clear of vegetation and stalks due to the recent tomato harvest – ideal search conditions for a metal detector. Except for the single ginormous rhubarb plant right where the X on the map marked the location where the ring was taken off her finger and placed in her bra! No sign of the ring yet as I carefully searched in-between each rhubarb shoot. I got a few signals that turned out to be lead scraps, pull tabs, and coins moving on to the remaining garden area. All of these finds are evidence the ring could still be here, even though the family already searched with a rented metal detector. In the garden center, I heard a soft signal and brushed away the top layer of dirt. Ring found! Sitting just under the surface, I plucked the lost diamond ring from the soil and proudly waved in front of the family members like a winning lottery ticket! We rinsed and cleaned off the ring for a good photo. The mom and dad made a video call to their worried daughter and revealed the good news! I think there were tears of joy, but I couldn’t tell because my COVID-19 mask was fogging up my sunglasses, and I couldn’t see anything. Another lost ring reunited with its owner!

Here in Seattle we have had some really good weather and with good weather comes the water sports. Dakota contacted me seeking dive recovery support for an expensive carbon fiber lid he lost at the dock from his latest toy. We had a nice chat on the phone where he explained he had this super exciting carbon fiber surfboard that has a gas engine inside of the hull. However when he was moving the board around on the dock the lid came off, went into the lake and sank to 40 feet. The good news was that this just happened and they knew the drop zone precisely. The lid was brightly painted on one side and has a bright colored decal on the back side. Being rather large in size I had all the confidence that it would be a visual find on the surface of the silty lake bottom. I also learned that in all four corners there were metal latching pins on this part so if the silt got too aggressive I would have all opportunity to locate it with my metal detector as a backup plan.
As with many of these dock recovery missions there is typically a stock pile of trash and assorted items that fall into our water ways. Always a great opportunity for a dive in, trash out session as well.

Janet called me and was very emotional over the recent loss of her wedding ring in her yard. She told me she was married fifty-two years to her husband that recently passed. She was devastated at the fact she just lost her yellow gold baguette diamond wedding band of thirty years. It meant everything to her for all the memories this ring represented and she was very upset that it was now missing from her finger.
She told me that it had become loose in recent times and on a few occasions it slipped off her finger but she was always able to find it. Because of this she was very aware of the loose fitting wedding ring and was constantly fiddling with it making sure it was still on her finger.
However just a few days prior to our conversation she told me she had walked down her gravel drive way to her mail box. She collected a few small pieces of mail, came back to her garage where she placed the mail down then walked over to her front yard. She then picked up a few sticks and went over to pull some of the ivy vines off a tree trunk before it choked the tree out. She said with a lot of certainty as soon as she walked out of the ivy it came to her immediate attention that her cherished wedding ring of thirty years was no longer on her finger and missing! She then went back into the ivy and started searching for her ring to no avail. Her daughter and son-in-law arrived thereafter to assist her by cutting back the ivy vines in front of the tree. They picked through all the pieces before placing the scraps into a box. They continued to raked the bits up and looked as hard as they could. All this and still no ring was found. After the search efforts in the yard Janet’s daughter did some searching online and found TheRingFinders.com and told her mother to give me a call.
We believed the ring to be safe on her private property so we scheduled a search with a early morning start. Janet pointed out exactly where she walked and her actions that helped put me in the correct spots. With a confident and experienced effort I conducted the search fo her lost wedding ring.

Frank was out in his back yard, cleaning up debris from the latest storm. While throwing some branches into a waste pile, one of the branches caught him on the right side of his head, sending his very expensive hearing aid into the garden somewhere. He searched the internet and found me.
I called Frank on the way home from work. He told me the story. I know how expensive they are because I wear a set of hearing aids. I wanted to find it as soon as possible so it wouldn’t be exposed to moisture.
Frank wasn’t there when I got there. His wife showed me the area and had the other hearing aid for me to see & hear what I was looking for. It has a small wire, and I thought it might be stuck in a bush somewhere. It barely made a sound on both of the detectors, I brought with me, even after trying multiple settings. I searched for like 40 minutes without finding it.
I took out my small handheld pinpointer and tested it with the other hearing aid, a much better result. So I got on my hands and knees and starting searching. We were looking in a fern patch. These plants can easily hide a hearing aid. Fifteen minutes more of searching resulted in uncovering the missing hearing aid.
Frank was relieved. A set of hearing aids can cost well over 6k. His wife thought that I was going to give up. I told her I don’t give up easily. Social distancing prevented us from shaking hands or receiving a bro hug. The smiles on their faces were awesome.

Yesterday after work I got a call from a nice man named Nathaniel from Huntsville, AL. He and his wife were staying at Orange Beach and had already ridden out Tropical Storm Cristobal so they were really ready to get down on the beach and do some exploring. Sometimes after a big storm there will be tidal pools left after the surge takes out a bunch of sand and leaves the water in it’s place and that’s what Nathaniel was enjoying, throwing football back and forth when his wedding ring came flying off. When Nathaniel called me I went through my standard list of questions and the only thing I was worried about was that a gentleman on the beach with a detector had helped them look in the water for about 45 mins to no avail. It turns out that this was a Good Samaritan from out of town and might not have been familiar with hunting in saltwater. I told Nathaniel that I would be there in about an hr and not to worry that even if it took awhile I was prepared for a night hunt. I was secretly thinking that it wouldn’t take long to grid the tidal pool but when I got there I saw that it was easily the largest one I had ever seen on the beach. It was over 100yds by 100yds. Wow. 😳 Luckily, Nathaniel is a very intelligent guy and had immediately marked his position with landmarks and then walked straight out and marked his position on the sand with a beach chair. We had a great starting point. We went over a few more questions and as the rain poured down, I started my search. I could hear the disturbed areas in my machine where they had been digging, looking for it so with every step I was hoping to hear that gold tone. The first try was a no go so I asked a few more questions about whether he was throwing the ball hard or lobbing it, etc. I expanded my search and started to see that tell tale sign of doubt and worry on Nathaniel’s face. I told him not to worry that I even had another detector in the car and if I had to I could grid out the entire area. He nodded and smiled a bit as I finished up the larger area with no luck. I came back over and asked him what he was thinking while he was watching me search and he said he was worried. Nathaniel is a big strong guy and he said he was throwing the ball hard so I asked him if he was throwing a tight spiral. He said of course 😄 so I told him that if he had followed through the ring may have flung to the other side towards shore. He said he had thought of that but he didn’t see it splash and he felt like it just had to be the other way. I smiled and politely told him my favorite line that “if they knew where it was, they wouldn’t need me.” He laughed and agreed to let me do a bit of searching towards the waters edge. I went 3 feet and got a 12-37 which is usually a zinc penny on my machine but I never pass a good signal while searching for a ring and I always dig it very gently so I won’t damage the ring just in case. It came up in the scoop so easily that it didn’t make a sound and when I held it over to Nathaniel he just yelled, “YOU ARE THE MAN!!!” Haha, that feeling of elation never gets old. It turns out that it was Nathaniel’s wife’s birthday and she was at dinner with family hoping that he would make it in time. When I found out I insisted that we make a run for it and they could send me pics later. As you can see, he made the dinner and I’m pretty sure his wife liked her birthday present. 👍😃. From Father To Son….
…..Is quite an often spoken phrase most of us have heard perhaps at family gatherings. More commonly it’s referred to a particular trait, habit or skill that the younger man has naturally developed from the elder person. No doubt that the pictured gentleman has acquired much knowledge and skills from his father, but this story is quite the opposite. Something very sentimental to him was lost a few days ago.
Going back 30 years, shortly after his father’s passing he received his ring. Quite stunned and thankful when presented with it, for a few moments memories of the ring came to mind, memories of him, his dad and the ring his Dad was so proud of always being a part of what they did together from a single age all the way to manhood such as fishing, playing cards, catching a football, working on a car, and theatrical gesturing while socializing with friends and family. Now in the past 30 years the ring has become a huge part of his life, work and family in the same way as his dad cherished it.
As the COVID-19 virus restrictions are being lifted, many people are hurrying going about tasks to catch up on lost time. Somewhere in the yard while gardening the family ring slipped off. When I got on site I set up my MXT and ran a grid pattern. He and his wife thought the ring was sterling silver so I was looking for a high meter signal but would check all signals that sounded solid. No high read signals came thru but as I swept over some high foliage I got an all so familiar gold signal. Brushing the new mulch aside revealed this very handsome white gold ring!
His back was to me so I signaled to the wife that I got it. I said to him hey how’d this big chunk of metal get here, it’s interfering with the detector and has to go. He spun around and angrily marched over, looking down to pull it up he realized it was his ring! Lifting it from the earth he held it to the sky and said thank you! to his Dad looking down upon us. Happy with the ring back, and it’s gold!, he’s anticipating a wonderful Father’s day and a new story to share with his children and grandchildren for years to come.

Amy lost lost her cell phone the other night while walking her dog on the beach. She and her husband went back to the beach later that evening and again the following morning to look for it with no luck.
That is when they reached out to fellow Ringfinder Dave Milstead who referred them to me. After speaking with Amy about the details of how the cell phone was lost, I began a thorough search of
the area. Approximately 45 minutes later, the cell phone was found about 8 inches deep in the sand. Amy was happy to have it returned because she needed it for a meeting later in the afternoon!
This call started over text. I get a text at 8:00 pm “I need your help I found you on google” “Ur a ring finder right” “you can like find rings in water”?
This went on for 30 minutes then I got impatient and called the number. I got no answer so I texted “why are you not answering the phone if you need help”. Then get a response, I’m 15 turning 16 tomorrow I thought you would want to talk to an adult. Yes,Yes,Yes I would love to talk to an adult. Then Marissa texted her mothers phone number to me. I called Melissa and got the details of what had happened. Marissa was trying to pull herself up on a dock and the necklace she was wearing got caught and broke. The silver pendant and a ring she inherited from a close uncle fell in the water below. Marissa was devastated thinking she lost the ring for ever. By this time it was 9:00 pm so I told Melissa we needed to wait till the following morning to recover the ring and pendant in the daylight. They were 1 hour travel from me and it was getting dark fast. I asked Melissa to text me an address to the house.
I waited 1/2 hour for the address and it was not coming. I texted Melissa to remind her about the address. I needed it before I went to bed to see where they were located. She said Marissa was having a very hard time and could not settle down. I told Melissa I could talk to her I have 17 and 15 year old girls. She said that would be great she is trying to get ready for Marissa’s birthday the next day. I called Marissa with my magical powers. When I start talking about metal detectors and sand scoops girls/women just fall asleep. I did such an good job after I found the pendant and ring Melissa could not wake Marissa up. She about had to pry her out of bed with a crow bar. I showed Marissa the ring and pendant and she was very happy to get them back. She said it helped me talking to her the night before and explaining they were not gone I could find them.
