I received a call from Favio who had lost his cell phone the night before at the beach. He was wondering if I would be able to do a search for him, and I let him know I was available. I asked if the phone was still showing on the find my phone app, and he said that it was, which boosted hope for a successful recovery. We arranged to meet at the location that evening.

When I arrived Favio had some car trouble and was a late in coming, so I asked him to send me a map of the area, and where he believed the phone had been lost so I could begin my search while he was in transit. I had almost completed the search area when Favio and his friends arrived. They then moved the search area a bit North of where I had been searching, and within about 20 minutes, I was able to hand his phone back. Favio then explained how he had recently come South from Alaska, and purchased the best phone he could afford in order to be able to do some film work, so this recovery was furthering his dream career. I was very happy to make his day.

Car Keys Thrown from Apartment Balcony in Birmingham, AL… FOUND!

On Friday morning, November 24th, 2023, I received a call from Gary stating his adult son, Greg, had thrown both sets of his own car keys from his 3rd story apartment balcony in Birmingham, Alabama.  Greg was going through some rough times in life, which eventually led to this outcome.  We’re all human and life happens.  Thrown items occur way more than people think.  The important thing was that I had an accurate account of what happened.  This can mean the difference between a find vs. no find.  At the time of Gary’s call, I was still in Tampa, FL on vacation, but I was about to head to the airport to fly back to Huntsville, AL.  I told Gary that I could conduct a search the following morning when I was back in town.

I met Gary and Greg in Birmingham at noon on Saturday.  I grabbed two rocks that were similar in size to a car key fob, and we headed up to Greg’s apartment balcony.  I had Greg re-enact the 2 throws using the rocks.  I took a photo and marked the location they landed at (photo below).  We headed down the stairs to the back of the apartment complex to start the search.  We had to hop the fence and slide down a bit of an incline to get to the location the rocks landed at.

I started a grid search with my Minelab Equinox 900 metal detector and shortly noticed that there were quite a few trash targets in the area.  The ground was covered with leaves, so I needed to check all targets with my pin pointer to make sure I didn’t miss the keys.  A few minutes into the search, Gary had visually found the first set of keys!  They were about 15 feet to the left of where the first rock landed.  I headed to the second location and began detecting there.  Soon after, I also visually spotted the second set of keys.  This set was about 10 feet from where the second rock landed.  Both sets of car keys were found!!  Gary and Greg were both very thankful and relieved.  We gave praise to God for the quick double recovery.

After we celebrated and took some photos (Gary and Greg politely declined to be in the photo), Gary and I headed to my favorite Birmingham seafood restaurant, The Fish Market, for lunch.  We enjoyed a nice meal and fellowship together.  Gary thanked me again and I was on the road headed back to Huntsville.  I thank the Lord for another successful recovery and safe trip home.  I also pray for Greg and his journey in life.  Until the next adventure, please take care and God bless!

Rob called me after they had search for a couple hours for his wife’s very sentimental ring from her home in Vietnam. She was enjoying her first experience of snow and was throwing it. This was an old property with 100’s of signals and lots of foot traffic because of its location. After about 15 minutes I was able to recover it, not to far from their search area. This 14k Gold ring that I found & returned was posted on Craigslist during this summer.

I reached out to the owner cause I found it nearly a week after at Moonlight beach Ca. He’s very lucky I did,,,Would of been gone forever. Erik was enjoying the day at EZ Cruz Marina, when a gust of wind took his hat and prescription glasses. With help from his friends, Erik tried using a long-handled net to scoop the glasses. Visibility, rocks, and depth made netting his glasses impossible. Sharon, the manager from EZ-Cruz marina, remembered that I recovered a ring last year and gave Erik my contact information.

When Erik called, he told me exactly how and where the glasses entered the water. He even sent me photos with drawings.

Gear Preparation

 

My divemaster (AKA: my wonderful wife) and I checked in with the marina office. We assessed the conditions and finalized how to conduct the search. We dropped a weighted “down line” from the dock to mark the center of the search area where the glasses fell into the water. The easiest entry was from the shore, with a hundred-yard swim. We attached a safety rope after reviewing tender-diver signals.

 

 

 

Most dock bottoms have a lot of metal debris, so I tethered the detector at the surface for my first search by gentle touch and use of a Garrett Pinpointer.

As I descended into the murky water, I lost all visibility at about 5 feet. I hit bottom at about twelve feet, and it was dark, very dark. Even my flashlight wouldn’t penetrate the murky water. I very carefully used my fingertips and pinpointer with a search pattern using the drop line as a reference. Within just a few minutes, I felt a pair glasses and carefully put them in my bag. There are always a lot of sunglasses around docks, and I wasn’t sure these were Erik’s. I ascended, gave the bag to my wife who compared them to a picture Erik had provided. She told me they were the right ones by signaling me the OK sign.

We were so glad to return Erik’s glasses. The actual search by touch took less than ten minutes. But the preparation, planning for the search & recovery, and clean-up took several hours. It was worth it to return such a nice young man’s glasses.

Lost hearing aid found in Malcolm, Nebraska

I got a call from Richard’s son that his father had lost a hearing aid. Richard still had one which I scanned to see what the signal was like. Richard took me on a tour of his acreage to show me the places he did yard work that day. Twenty minutes later I got the signal. He is having 28 people over for thanksgiving in a couple days. I’m glad he will be able to hear all the laughter of his family.

Got a call today about a gold wedding ring lost in the backyard from about two weeks ago. While the wife was hanging Christmas lights and putting out other lights on a cold day.

Lost Tungsten Wedding Band Kuhio Beach Waikiki…FOUND!!!

This ring find began just as I finished dinner when Giovanni who was on vacation from Maryland texted, “Are you available to retrieve a lost ring on Oahu?  We are here until Friday.”  I immediately called knowing the sundown hunters would be combing the beach.  Gio told me he was in waist deep water at the Kuhio Beach lagoon when while catching a football his silver colored tungsten Wedding Band came off and disappeared in the sand.  A few beachgoers pitched in but were unsuccessful in finding the ring.  I told Gio I would grab my gear and head down to the zoo to park and we could meet at the beach.  After I parked Gio and his lovely wife Shelia met me in the parking lot and we drove to a near by parking spot near where the ring came off at Kuhio Beach.  Gio directed me to the spot he was thinking 5 feet from the breakwater.  It was pitch dark but I was able to use the hotel windows and the wall as markers.  I hunted along the wall to about 15 feet from the wall.  On the return leg I found a screaming 14K Rose Gold Wedding band but not Gio’s ring.  I went back ashore and discussed the depth of the water and Gio figured he must have been farther away from the wall.  It was pitch dark but the Manticore light was enough to see what I was doing and I decided to try an in and out grid to get more distance from the wall.  On about the fourth leg I got a screamer on the Beast and in two scoops Gio’s large size Tungsten Band was in the scoop.  Gio and Shelia were very appreciative of the successful hunt and drove me back to my car at the zoo.  We had a few laughs and a hug and they promised me a selfie when they got back to their room.  See those smiles above…its what I love!  Aloha to Giovanni and Shelia!

Will Smiles!

Last fall, Will was doing yard work when he realized his ring was missing. He had been mowing his beautiful yard and thought it might have slipped off while emptying the grass catcher. While he was reading Reddit articles, Will came across one mentioning one of my recoveries. He texted me, and we set an appointment on a lovely day to conduct a search.

Will showed me where he dumped his grass clippings in his back yard. There were a number of reasonable target IDs in the area, and each one had to be identified. After a long search through the piles of debris with a rake and shovel, I expanded the area to go under low tree branches and around large stones. Finally, I heard a clean signal (with a VDI of 15). Gently scraping the leaves away, the ring appeared!

Lost Pendant Found in Lincoln RI

On November 15, 2023, I received a call from Allison, who lost a beautiful onyx pendant while visiting Chase Farm in Lincoln.  She decided to search the internet for help and found my information.  She asked for my help to find her lost pendant.  The next day, I met her at the farm where she had lost the pendant.  It was a large area.  Allison told me that her chain broke and showed me two different areas of the farm where the pendant could be. I search the first area and didn’t find the pendant.  After searching the second area with no success, I started thinking that someone may have found it already.  That’s when I decided to expand the search beyond these two areas, and I found the pendant.  Frequently, lost items are not in the area where you think they are lost, and you have to search outside the box.  It’s a good thing I did.  As you can see, Allison was delighted to have the pendant back.
