*** Justin and his brother were at Emerald Bay which is located in Laguna Beach, CA. His brother lost a white gold bracelet in the dry sand earlier in the day. After searching for a long time, Justin set out to buy or rent a metal detector.

During Justin’s attempt to locate a metal detector on line, he found my contact information. His call to me was not long. Basically , I needed to know if it was lost in dry sand and the location was less than 5 miles from where I live. I met him within a short time and found the gold bracelet using a Minelab Manticore metal detector.

*** James called me from Cresent Bay in Laguna Beach , CA. He was with his family and had lost his white gold wedding band. It’s located less than six miles from my home, so I was able to meet James on the beach soon after talking to him.

He told me that he believed the ring had come off his finger somewhere between their beach towels or in the water where he had been teaching his daughter to boogie board. He also told me it was identifiable because it had his fingerprint engraved inside the band.

An hour after grid searching the whole area, the ring did not show. We discussed a few more possibilities, when he remembered that he had gone 100 yards south to skim board away from the swimmers.

I headed to that area knowing that the tide had already fallen low enough to have a good chance to find the ring, if it was there. “Boom” 10 minutes later James’ ring was in my scoop. I’m glad we took the time to discuss where else he had been as he had not told me of his other activities. It was a great day at a beautiful  beach with an awesome family and my pleasure to help them.

I was contacted by Tim who had lost his gold wedding ring. He was not sure but he thought it flew off his hand in the backyard when he was throwing hay. Tim has some dogs and the backyard was getting a bit muddy so he was trying to keep the yard from turning into a mud pit. He normally uses his right hand but after having shoulder surgery he was forced to use his left. It was after he was working in the yard he noticed his ring was missing. When Tim called he was a little frustrated as he had went to a local tool rental and rented a metal detector but all it did was beep! I told Tim that was normal and I would check to see when I could come out.

I checked my scheduled and the weather and decided that I could make it the next day. I took off and let Tim know I was coming. Of course the weather had looked great but when I pulled in it started to rain. Tim showed me the yard, pretty standard with a steep incline on both sides. He was guessing it was on the flat part where he had spread most of the hay. I got to work and much to my surprise the ground sounded pretty good and I was able to use my large coil. I cleared the first part with no luck and went down to the steep incline on the right side. After a few passes I ran into the ring, I don’t know if I saw it or heard it first but there it was. I picked it up and it was a beautiful ring and big! I walked up the hill and told Tim it was pretty ugly down there just before I handed him his ring. He could not believe I had found it and gave me a big hug. Tim then told me when I did not find it on the flat his heart had sunk and he thought it was gone. Funny thing is that thought had never crossed my mind yet as I has a lot more area to cover. I was glad to have found it and we thanked St. Anthony as we had both asked for some divine intervention. Tim and I talked for quite a while afterwards and his wife was also kind enough to thank me as well. Tim explained to me he reached out to his jeweler and the replacement cost for the ring was double or maybe even more. More importantly he told me the diamonds in the ring were extra special as they were from both his and his wife’s families and even if he had to have the ring replaced he did not anymore special diamonds to put into it. Thankfully he did not have to worry about that. It was awesome to meet another kind and extremely generous client and reunite him with his special wedding ring.

Eric reached out to me via email. He’d been in a rush to take down his Christmas decorations before an incoming snowstorm and, in the process, had lost his yellow gold wedding ring. We arranged to meet after his workday ended.

Upon arrival, Eric showed me the area where he’d been working. The search area, blanketed by about three inches of snow, wasn’t very large. He mentioned he needed to pick up his daughter from school but would return in about ten minutes.

As soon as Eric and his wife left, I began my search. Just a minute later, my detector gave a strong signal in the gold range. I brushed away the snow, and there it was—Eric’s gleaming yellow-gold wedding ring. I snapped a few photos and waited for their return.

When I saw them approaching, I pretended to still be searching. Eric’s wife got out of the car first, and I quietly asked her to wait a moment. Eric followed and said, “I guess you haven’t had any luck.” I asked if he recalled shaking his hands or doing anything that might have flung the ring beyond the immediate area. He didn’t. While he scanned the lawn, I revealed the ring from my gloved hand. His wife noticed first, and her surprised smile was wonderful to see. Eric’s reaction was even better.

They were both overjoyed. His wife was particularly thrilled, exclaiming, “This is great! Now I can finally get that dining room carpet and not have to buy him a new ring!”

I love my hobby!

Lost Sentimental Gold Cross & Chain at Paradise Cove Beach Ko Olina…FOUND!!!

This Gold Cross & Necklace hunt began when I got a call from Jose who is from Columbia and was vacationing on Oahu.  While enjoying the waters of Paradise Cove Beach, Jose  had taken his cross and necklce off for safe keeping and placed it on a towel.  Unbeknownst to the family members someone used the towel and when Jose came out of the water the cross & necklace were no where to be found.  He found “Metal Detector services” on Google and gave me a call.  I was wrapping up my work day, so I told Jose I would run home, grab my gear and head on over in about an hour.  They waited for me to arrive and when I got there Jose and his lovely wife met me on the beach to show me where they thought the cross & necklace would be.  Jose drew a box in the sand and I started the grid search.  A few minor trash targets, then a nice solid 18 on the Manticore and in one scoop there was the beautiful necklace glistening in the scoop.  Jose and his family were overjoyed as I was in the last line of the grid and they were worried.  I always try hard to find Jesus and today we did.  Aloha to Jose and his family!

It was the second warmest day since January 1st and a grate day to clean up some of the winter’s wrath on tree limbs. Dan was in the wooded area next to an old cranberry bog behind his house doing just that. He was carrying a fallen limb to the rear edges of his property when a low hanging branch snagged one of his hearing aids from his ear. After hours of searching, without finding the hearing aid, Dan reached out for help.

A call to Eleanor, at J&E Enterprises, got Dan two useful bits of suggestions. First he was encouraged to call one of TheRingFinders and in the meantime he could try dragging a magnet. Dan called me first. I answered the call and I was on my way. While waiting for me to arrive the search with a magnet was on. Something I had never thought of while searching for any of the 6 hearing aids that I have returned.

As I had done the day before, I adjusted my detector to the specific model hearing aid I was searching for. The area was again less than a 20 foot diameter around the branch. A standard cross hatch search pattern because of the foliage and terrain was about impossible. About 20 minutes passed with many bogus iron alerts from my detector, right tone but wrong numeric reading. A slower, shorter swing of the detector started on the outer  edge of the most probable area that the hearing aid would be in. Low and behold right under the branch that had caused the loss and again, as in yesterday’s find, the hearing aid could not be seen while standing above it. I had to get on my knees and carefully move the foliage that was covering the hearing aid before retrieving it for Dan.

This was my 200th return since I joined TheRingFinders and as I did on the 100th return I wanted to give something special to the owner of the lost item. Unfortunately I did not have the Carpe Diem token with me and I had to return to Dan’s home the next day. The token was designed by a metal detecting friend, Jim Wirth. Sentimental Memories are something that cannot be replaced and I am so fortunate to have so many. Lost Hearing Aid Found and Returned, Yarmouth Port, MA

The month of January and first 3 weeks of February have been very cold here on Cape Cod. I had only been out detecting one day since the first of the year. Well the Temperature had got into the 40’s and people have been getting out for a walk the past two days. Anne was one that got out for an extended walk with her sister and dog. While on the walk she lost a hearing aid. After not being able to find the lost hearing aid she contacted friends, including one of my neighbors, Eleanor of J&E Enterprises who in turn contacted me. It is great to see how people come to one’s aid when help is needed.

During the walk with her dog a low hanging branch caught Anne by surprise and dislodged the hearing aid. Anne and her sister looked for several hours and could not find it. The hearing aid’s app showed the location to be in the Cul-de-Sac area. Good information but not much help. A cell phone app for locating a “lost” hearing aid gives the location to be within 30 feet or so of where the two were disconnected. Knowledge of the tree lessened the search area to a 10 foot circle within the Cul-de-Sac. A visual sight search was about impossible as the bronze hearing aid and ground cover blended in perfectly with each other.

Using the second hearing aid as a “standard” I adjusted my detector’s notch filtering and sensitivity settings to give a good indication to the missing hearing aid. The exact location of the lost hearing aid would be known when the detector’s coil was passed over it. Starting at the tree where it was believed the loss occurred, it took only a couple of minutes to locate the hearing aid. However, I could not see the hearing aid until I got down on my hands and knees and moved some leaves.

Anne was right with me as I recovered her hearing aid and was very grateful for the service I provided. She called her husband, thanked me many times, chatted with my wife as I put my gear away. I know she is waiting for this blog to be posted.

Lost Silver Ring w/ Topaz Setting Found In The Snow In Hamtramck Michigan

Grace Under Pressure….

….With getting engaged on Valentines Day, Grace was moving forward with wedding plans. But somewhere between the house and car her ring that was passed down to her came off her finger. With high sentimental value the stress began to mount when looking thru the ice and snow when she couldn’t find it. The area was in a public parking lane that had lots of tire tracks, ice and a huge snow pile over the curb. One good thing was no snowplow had come by yet. I began to detect the parking lane and was hoping that the ring was there. After a few square feet of grid searching, I got a signal on my MXT metal detector that was in the silver range. Pushing the pin pointer thru the dirty stained snow and ice chunks revealed her ring! She ran from the curb and as I placed the ring in her hand her smile would have melted a glacier!

Lost Keys in the Snow Found in Pontiac Michigan

The Keys To Freedom…

…..Come in many ways. For Ray, like most of us, his set of keys was his freedom, but when he lost them in the snow the freedom those keys provided was lost. He faced being locked out of the house and a possible towing charge plus key replacement fee, and the hassle of it all. Using my MXT metal detector I scanned thru the piles of snow he shoveled. A solid signal came thru on the detector and down deep in a snow pile his keys appeared! Now free from the boundaries of the loss Ray can continue to enjoy his freedom!

Lost – Lady’s diamond wedding ring, Palm Coast, Fl – Found with a metal detector!

Brittany and her husband were visiting the Palm Coast area on Valentines Day and while driving along on highway A1A the unexpected happened. As we are all aware of how emotions and feelings can lead us to do and say things that we later regret…that is exactly what happened on this particular day. It was towards evening and thankfully they were not traveling at a high rate of speed when Brittany threw her diamond wedding ring out of the car window and into a grass area along side of the road. Her husband immediately pulled off of the road and into the nearest driveway and the two of them tried to find her ring…but her thrown ring was no where to be found!

Later that night Brittany tried to find help and went online to search for something or someone that could help her in her time of need. It was around 10:30 pm that I recieved her call asking if I could help her and after hearing her story my wife and I decided to make the one hour drive to Palm Coast and meet Brittany and we prayed to God we would be the exact help that she so desperately needed.

Brittany showed us where she “thought” the ring was thrown and I set up some cones and began doing an overlapping grid search of the 500 square foot area. Both Brittany and my wife were using very strong flashlights but the night dew was making everything wet and the grass and leaves glistened and sparkled making it almost impossible to find her lost ring. Along most any road there is allot of buried trash items giving signals that sound very similar to what a gold diamond ring would sound like so I had to investigate each shallow signal just to be sure. After 45 minutes I got a really strong signal that registered shallow and my head light exposed her beautiful lost diamond ring just laying there among the wet leaves and grass! Brittany was ecstatic and so relieved to have her ring back again! A lesson well learned, hey?
