Ring Lost at South Mission Beach, Found and Returned

Greg was camped in the dry sand close to a volleyball court at South Mission Beach. He planned on joining the fun on the court, so, he dutifully removed his watch and wedding ring and put them in a zippered pouch before heading into the game. Game’s over, he packs up and heads to the car. Goes into the pouch to retrieve his watch and ring, only to find a slight opening in the zipper. The watch was there, but, the ring was missing. I get the call, get some details, and arrange to meet him the next morning so he can show me the exact area where they had been.

It had been super hot and humid all week, and I’d planned on going out in the evening to do some detecting anyway, so, I figured South Mission was as good a place to hunt as any, and I might even stumble across his ring. So off I go to cool down and try to get lucky in the treasure department. I start in and around the volleyball court in question and am not finding a single target. Oh, Oh, not a good sign. somebody has probably already been there ahead of me. I continue to fan out and search the outer areas away from the court and start to find a few coins. An hour or so later, bingo, I get lucky and find a ring. It was described to me as a tungsten carbide with a gold inlay. I texted and called Greg to get a more complete description, as this ring was titanium. Except for the type of metal, he described it to a T, so, it had to be the one. It was interesting to find out that they had been married exactly 2 years to the day! I found it on their anniversary and the date was inscribed inside the band! Now that’s a ring that wants to be found! A pleasure to meet you Greg, and thank you for the reward.

Ring Lost First Day after Wedding .. Santa Ana, CA. .. Recovered

Javier called me about 8 pm, Monday night. He had lost his wedding ring the day after his marriage to Stephanie. They had a big reception, Sunday at his parent’s home. He wasn’t quite sure where or when it was lost but he was able to eliminate a few areas by reviewing photos taken during the day.
He believed it was lost on their large lawn. It was not a public area so it wasn’t necessary to do the search that night. It’s always a question in my mind, what kind of conditions will I find when I get to the search area. It was a nice yard area that had quite a few metal trash signals, mostly deep. I set my sensitivity on my detector low because there is no need to waste time investigating deep targets. I concentrated on the low tones with surface depth readings ( 1″ or 2″ ). After about 30 minutes I got a got the perfect gold tone at 2 inches. Javier’s ring in the grass probably stepped deep into the grass by several people during the party.
The family had left me to do the search while they waited inside the house. I did not touch the ring, I wanted them to see how well it was hiding in the grass. We all enjoyed the moment, sincerely thanking me and taking time to take photos. It was definitely a pleasure to help them find their wedding ring.

College Ring Lost in the Ocean FOUND 6 Weeks Later, North Myrtle Beach SC

I got a call from Evan on Friday, Sept 11th asking if I could look for his ring that he lost Aug 7th while on vacation here from Texas. When he called I was on a little weekend vacation with my wife and at the time we were on a tour boat to Ft. Sumter SC. I told him I’d be glad to look and I’d call him back Sunday for the details.

I ended up texting and then calling him Saturday night and got a general vicinity of where he lost his ring. In our conversation he said that he and his wife were here vacationing with his Law school buddy but he wasn’t familiar with North Myrtle Beach and wasn’t real sure where they were. He told me that he is confined to an electric wheelchair and thought they were close to the Cherry Grove beach. He also sent me a video that his wife had taken that showed his friend Gary carrying him out into the surf and the point that both were knocked over by a wave causing the ring to come off Evan’s finger. Luckily the video showed Gary carrying Evan past 2 posts stuck in the sand with a sign attached to one of the posts to indicate the location of a drainage pipe. This helped narrow the search area but I still wasn’t completely positive of where Gary and Evan were. Early Sunday evening I went to the presumed area looking for the 2 posts with a sign and the drainage pipe. There were two possible locations about 3 blocks apart so I did a 360 degree video of both locations and sent them back to Evan and his wife, Summer to look over and see if anything looked familiar. Evan and his wife both were pretty sure the 1st video was the right spot. I returned later that evening and searched until just above low tide at 2:30 am. I went back again on Monday at low tide and I still wasn’t convinced I was in the right spot. Evan was finally able to get a hold of Gary and Gary’s father on Wednesday and confirmed I was in the right area.

Thursday I was back at the same spot and searched from the dry to the wet sand and out into knee deep surf. Still no luck except for totally cleaning the dry sand of every bottle cap and other piece of trash in a 25X75 ft. area!!! Meanwhile I was e-mailing back and forth with friend Jim Brouwer, and president of one of the metal detecting hunting clubs in Myrtle Beach to see if he knew of anybody in the club that might have found the ring. In one of the e-mails Jim asked me if I had found it yet and I told him no but was going back out on Saturday at 4pm and if he wanted to come out to come on.

Saturday, I got there a little early after studying Evan’s video over and over again. I tried to position myself exactly where I thought Gary had started walking into the surf. Then I estimated the angle Gary walked since he didn’t walk straight in. I counted the number of steps (38) and the length of each step Gary took. I drew out a square gridline dragging my scoop in the sand. I also drug the scoop at the angle I thought Gary walked from the spot I thought he started to the low tide line and then started my grid search. Jim showed up around 5 and started a grid to the south of where I was. My search was from North to South and Jim’s was from South to North, after a number of passes I had to stop because Jim’s machine was interfering with mine. Jim ended up moving a little further south and started working a North to South grid. Right at 6:15 I had a medium signal right under my angle line I had dug in the sand showing my estimated line Gary walked. Bingo I had Evan’s College Ring in my scoop. I couldn’t believe it.

After 6 weeks and a day of being lost I wasn’t sure the ring was going to be found. We’ve had a lot of sanding over here and there’s always the possibility of another metal detectorist finding it. I had my PI set at maximum sensitivity and it took 4 or 5 scoops to pull it out from a depth of at least 10-12 inches or more.

Evan had shared his story with me on just how important his ring was to him and it truly touched me. Every ring return brings me great joy but this has a very special meaning and one I’ll never forget!!!

I mailed Evan’s Ring Monday and he got it today, Wednesday. I got a text from him saying “WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE!!!! You have mail coming your way but will never understand how grateful I am for you and all of your tireless hours!!!!”

This is what this is all about and it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Lost Gold Wedding Band at Punaluu Beach…..FOUND!!!

I got a call from Andrew at Punaluu Beach Park at around 5PM. Great rush hour traffic! Andrew explained to me that he and his wife Meghan were laying in about 2 feet of water and when he stood up his wedding band slipped off into the water. He felt it drop off and immediately reached into the water and sand to retrieve his ring but as usual the sand consumed it. Meghan and Andrew looked for a while but never saw a hint of the ring. So 34 miles and about an hour away. I had my daughter check the traffic APP and the roads were clear. I loaded up and called Andrew and told him I’d get there as soon as I could. He said they would wait at the beach in their rental car. The scenic ride up along the East coast of Oahu is spectacular. Several bays, the Koolau mountains and China-man’s Hat Island make the drive breathtaking. I was there in no time. Andrew took me down to the beach to show me where in the water he was when the ring fell off. He was very sure of the location so I started a circular search with him as the pivot point. There was a lot of deep trash and under the sand was very chunky coral rocks. After about five trash targets and seeing how the waves were crashing on the beach with a fairly solid bottom I decided to move shore-ward to the wave curl. I thought with the hard bottom the ring probably tumbled up to that point. As I went along the wave curl I saw a Portuguese Man-O-War floating between Andrew and myself. I warned him to watch out and let me know if any more come into our area. The bubble and deep purple streamer isn’t hard to miss. My first target had that familiar sound and one scoop there was Andrew’s ring. Elapsed time 7 minutes. Andrew and Meghan were both surprised and grateful. From Austin, Texas and Married just 4 days with the lost ring back on his finger there were “Smiles” all around. Aloha to Andrew & Meghan.

Winchester Mountain Lookout – A High Elevation Find!

I am very fortunate to have the North Cascade Mountain range and the Mount Baker Wilderness practically in my backyard, here in Bellingham, Washington. We have backpacked and explored much of the area and trails but there was one jaunt that had been elusive and escaped us. My wife and I have never hiked the Winchester Mountain Lookout Trail. We’ve always wanted to but it just never happened until last week when I received a call from a young couple who lost a ring on the trail up the mountain.

The Winchester Mountain Lookout is an old Ranger fire lookout built in 1935 and staffed until 1966. It was slated for demolition in 1982 but rescued by the Mount Baker Club who now keeps it up and is used for overnighters who want to spend nights there. It is quite comfortable but no longer has a wood stove in it. But the key feature to this spot is its views. A magnificent 360° view of the Mount Baker Wilderness and into British Columbia.IMG_1881

So when the call came in I was excited, saddened by their loss but excited at the opportunity to get up there and take a look, for the ring and the view. So my wife and I met Ethan and his wife at the trailhead and up the mountain we went.

The ring was lost about a mile up the trail, maybe a bit less, about 6000 ft. elevation. They had it marked with a GPS coordinate. But they knew the spot all too well as they had been back looking for it with a rented metal detector with no success. If there is only one piece of advice I can give someone who has lost some jewelry, it would be to not waste time and money on a rental metal detector. Probably 90% of the people who contact me had already rented a metal detector and tried. It is not worth it because in most cases it will not be an adequate detector and they are not as easy to operate as one might think. Well we made it to the spot and went to work.

The ring was lost when a large bug landed on her hand and she quickly whisked it away along with the ring down a steep slope off the trail. They pointed out the area where it happened and we recreated the mishap. I started with the area where they thought it was and had no luck. I then worked my way out from there and made the find.

IMG_1866It is always nice to put a smile on someone’s face, in this case I got two big smiles. Then we packed up and headed to the top. It turned out to be a beautiful clear day with spectacular views. What a rewarding day. I love this hobby and love The Ring Finders.

14K White Gold Wedding Band Lost in the Surf – Found! Cherry Grove, SC

I got an e-mail from Kevin about a lost ring I had posted on Craigslist that wasn’t a match to his. So after a few e-mails back and forth I met Kevin on the beach at 9am on Sept 22nd. Kevin and his family were here on vacation from Georgia and he told me he was playing Frisbee with his sons on Sept 20th. In the process of catching the Frisbee he misjudged catching it and felt his ring fly off in a different direction than the Frisbee went

I set up a 30X60 ft. grid and started searching. On the 6th pass I got a good strong signal, dug a shallow scoop and there it was. I called him letting him know I had found it and he came right down from his room with a big smile on his face.

Kevin really helped me out on finding this ring by getting landmarks and knowing the area he lost it in.

Engagement Ring Lost, Found, and Returned at Indian Rocks Beach, Florida

On a Saturday, my fiancée and I were hanging out on the beach near the edge of the water. I thought it would be fun to roll into the water but did not realize how hard the waves were crashing. Before I knew it my ring slipped off and into the water. I looked around, but could not find it. My friends and fiancée also tried to help me, but we had no luck due to the choppy conditions. The next day my fiancée did a search for, “missing rings in Largo, Fl”, and that’s when he found Ring Finders! He went to the Suncoast Research and Recovery Club page and sent an email in hopes that someone could help. Stan immediately contacted him and got more information. We were not able to go out the following day, but that Tuesday we arrived at the same location we lost it around 6pm. I was praying that no one had found it already, but after a 20-minute search, Chris had indeed found something!

I was beyond ecstatic and we are so grateful for Stan, Chris, and Ed for helping me get my lost ring back. I thought for sure it was lost forever so we want to thank all the volunteers at Suncoast Research and Recovery Club for all they do and hope they can continue finding treasures for many years to come!

Large Diamond Ring Found in Kailua Kona, Hawaii

We got the call to find a lost diamond ring – a 2+ carat stone set in heavy gold – at a private residence.
The ring had bounced out the bedroom door at night – and couldn’t be found on the balcony or yard below. Due to the massive rains we’d been having, and the fact that the grass would be mowed the next day, we got the urgent call and luckily could come over the same day.
I looked under the balcony, around the bushes to the side of the balcony, and finally in the yard. About 20 yards away it sat tucked in the thick grass below – the ring must have rolled down the length of the balcony before tumbling off. Another happy ring recovery!

Lost Gold Ring In 40′ Motorhome-Found! Calmar Alberta Canada

I received an email from Kim regarding a white gold ring that she had lost in her motor home two years ago. I explained that it may be difficult task because of all the metal in the motor home but I agreed to go over and do my best.

Apparently Kim had placed two rings on the night table before going to bed, and the following morning one ring was missing. Kim and her husband Brent searched throughout the motor home several times and came to the conclusion that perhaps the ring had been taken.

We headed out to the storage yard where the motor home was parked and I asked Brent to pull the slides out so I could analyze the situation. I visualized where the ring could be and went to work taking everything out of the storage area under the bed, and also checking the mattress with my pro pointer. I then went outside and removed the bottom seal from around the slide just in case the ring had lodged itself between the seal and the frame of the motor home. This was not the case so I looked on the other side but could not see or feel anything. My feeling was that the ring had to be under the slide but Brent said he had pulled out the slide about 20 times since the ring had been lost.

I again laid down on the floor with my flashlight and noticed a silver object which I thought was the ring but turned out to be an American nickel. As I moved along the floor with the flashlight I notice something sparkling between the slide roller and the carpet. I reach in with a knife and said out loud “YES, found it!” Brent could not believe it.

We went back to see Kim and I asked if this was her ring. I think everyone in the neighborhood heard her scream with excitement.

Renting a metal detector is time consuming and will be frustrating if you have never used one. Especially near salt water or trashy parks were there are years of pull tabs and bottle caps to make things interesting.
Jessica called me asking me if I rent metal detectors and how my service works. She found my name on TheRingFinders.com.. I replied by saying I want to help you find the lost ring. You the rest is up to you. Time is very important and I’m available anytime you are. Her husband Andrew had lost his platinum wedding band while throwing a football at the top of the high tide line Sunday about 6pm.
They were at Surfside Colony a private community near Sunset Beach in north Orange County, CA.. Jessica said that she could meet me to get me in the gate and show me the location. I told her that it works better if her husband, who had lost it, could be there to explain what had happened. Lately, I’m finding out that it makes the search much easier if the person who lost it gives me the details.
Andrew could meet me a couple hours later after he got off work. He brought his son Cole, so I gave them a short lesson about how the detector works on the walk to the beach front. The two high tides since he lost the ring had moved in several inches of sand over the top of the slope. I started the grid in the center of the 40×40 ft. location . There wasn’t much trash so the grid search was moving fast except for my explaining to them what I was doing. Then I got a fare sounding signal, after three scoops I lost hope that it was Andrew’s platinum ring mainly because it should have been a surface find. One more scoop and there was a beautiful platinum ring belonging to Andrew. You have to stay positive the ocean does strange things. In this case it had to deposit about 8 inches of new sand over the top of the slope onto the towel line in less than 24 hrs.
We took a few photos then I let Andrew and Cole swing my detector as we walked off the beach. I think we will have a new member joining this hobby of metal detecting. Again it was a pleasure to meet Andrew and Cole and help them find the lost.
