Late Monday night, I got a call from Dyana, frantic about her husband Richard’s wedding band. They’d been at East Beach in Santa Barbara when Richard, trying to protect his ring, tucked it into the cupholder of his beach chair before swimming. Packing up to head back to the Hilton across the street, he forgot it was there—and the ring flew into the dry sand. East Beach is a hot spot for detectorists, so time was critical for lost ring recovery in Santa Barbara. I promised to meet them at 6 a.m. the next day to search East Beach’s sands.
I arrived at East Beach—just one of Santa Barbara’s gems like Hendry’s Beach, Bates Beach, and Butterfly Beach—and met Dyana near their spot. She pointed out the area, and I started a grid search with my Minelab Manticore. The beach had been groomed overnight, and the sand was eerily quiet—raising fears a sweeper or another detectorist had claimed it. Then, a clear tone rang out. One quick dig with my CKG sand scoop, and Richard’s wedding band was in my hand! Dyana’s relief was instant—it was their one-year anniversary, and losing the ring at East Beach had nearly spoiled it.

This ring find began when I got a text from Rahiti who hails from Tahiti and currently works for HECO on Oahu. While playing competitive surf polo during the Duke Fest at Kuhio Beach while attempting to hit the ball his Platinum Wedding Band flew off and disappeared in chest deep water. Since those protected pools get metal detected constantly I told Rahiti we should meet this afternoon immediately after I got off work. We met in the Zoo Parking lot and then proceeded down to Kuhio Beach. It was a super high tide and the waves were crashing over the wall and the pool was quite turbulent. Rahiti thought the ring would be about halfway cross the pool but that water was over my head. Looking at his pics from the day before when the ring was lost we realized it was probably only a third of the way in. I told Rahiti I would go as deep as possible then turn parallel to the shore so as to get the most out of the high tide hunt. I started at the extreme left side of the grid and went in. When I reached neck deep water I turned right and immediately got a loud #33 on the Manticore. I took one scoop and the target was captured. I could not believe my eyes there was a large Platinum Band in the scoop. First target, first swing! I yelled to Rahiti “Got it!” He looked as surprised as I was for such a quick recovery. Had he been even a few inches to the right on this hunt we wouldn’t have found the ring. Totally Blessed! Much Aloha to Rahiti!
This recovery started on Monday, Aug 27th about 1:10 pm, with a text message from Rachel saying, “Hi Jim. Am I able to hire you to search around our beach chairs for my wedding rings?” The text had her phone number, so I called her to get a little more detail. She told me that she took her ring set off and put them in her cover-up pocket to put on suntan lotion. A short time later she took the cover-up off, forgetting about the set. Within seconds, she remembered about them being in the pocket, and they were gone. She was sure they were around the beach chairs. Unfortunately, I wasn’t available for at least an hour or two, but she said she wasn’t going anywhere until she was sure the area was checked.
I called her back about 1:45 pm saying I’d be there in 30-45 minutes. When I got there she was in the parking lot talking to friends. We walked out on the beach and across the sand to where her husband Rob was sitting. The search area was maybe 1.5X1.5 ft. I had my Equinox 800 with me, turned it on and started swinging. With the ring set being white gold, I knew the VDI (Visual Display Indicator) would show between 8-12, depending on the size of the rings. Within seconds I had an 11 VDI and a strong signal next a beach chair. I asked Rachel if she’d move the beach chair so I could be sure I wasn’t getting interference from it. I swung my machine back over the spot and BINGO! I had to take 2 scoops to get the target out of the hole. I didn’t ask, but I assumed that Rachel and Rob had tried to find the ring set and moved enough sand to bury the ring a little deeper. When I spread the sand out on the beach, Rachel spotted her ring before I did and quickly picked it up. There were a few very happy tears of relief and a big hug from Rachel, who didn’t think she’d get her precious treasure back.
Special thanks to my son, Mike, who’s visiting from CT and took the video for the story.
Rachel and Rob – Thank you for trusting me to help find your lost treasure. Have a great rest of your vacation!!

I received a dimenime esperate call from Anissa, she had lost her diamond engagement ring in the sand at Hountington Beach, CA. .. I was able to meet her and her fiancé , Mike on the beach soon after the call. They were able to wait at the location , which is very helpful to make this a successful search.
They were doubtful that a metal detector could find such a small metal object, so I took a few minutes to explain how the newest metal detectors work..
Shortly afterthe demonstration I was able to find the precious ring.. They were very happy and great to have the very sentimental ring returned before they caught a flight back to San Francisco later that night.

I received a call regarding a lost yellow gold mans wedding band (with 10-27-23 engraved inside) on the beach in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The ring was lost on 07/20/24, while James was enjoying a day at the beach. James had placed his treasured ring in a zippered bag for safe keeping, when he decided to put his ring back on his finger he found that it was no longer in the bag. There had been several people who were going in and out of the bag so James felt that the ring had fallen out of the bag and into the sand. I was given the possible location of the lost ring as being on the beach south of Prospect Street at the South end of Rehoboth boardwalk and about three quarters of the way out towards the water. I searched the area for about an hour and a half with no luck in finding the ring. With the ring being lost in the sand for six days prior to my searching for it I felt that the sand rake had gotten it and moved it or that it had been found by someone else with a metal detector. Feeling that I had done my best to find the ring, I began to walk back to the boardwalk while still swinging my metal detector, I all of a sudden heard a familiar tone in my headset and upon digging the item up I found that it was James lost ring. I then promptly took a photo of the ring and texted the photo to James who was happy to get the news. James was in his home state of Maryland at which time he was attending a wedding. I was told that upon hearing the news of the ring being recovered, everyone at the wedding had asked for my cell number. James was on his way to Bethany Beach on 07/27/24 so I met him in the parking lot of a local business at which time I reunited him with his lost ring.

Late Sunday afternoon, I got a frantic call from Julia, desperate to recover her wedding ring set lost in the sand at East Beach in Santa Barbara. I assured her we’d find them and raced to East Beach—one of Santa Barbara’s most popular spots, alongside Hendry’s Beach and Leadbetter Beach. Julia and her husband Robert had been enjoying the warm breezes and calm waters when Julia, trying to protect her rings, slipped them into her shorts pocket before a swim. After drying off, she put the shorts back on, reached for her rings—and they were gone, lost somewhere in the dry sand.
Julia showed me their spot at East Beach, and I started a grid search with my Minelab Manticore. Within a minute or two, I hit a solid tone, dug with my CKG scoop, and pulled out her stunning engagement ring. A couple more swings later, another perfect signal—her wedding band was safe in my scoop! I received a call from Scott regarding his lost white gold wedding band that had been lost at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware on the beach. Scott said that he had been throwing a football to his son and that his ring flew off of his finger and landed in the wet sand just as a wave washed over top of it. Scott said that he ran over to try to recover his ring, but the ring disappeared into the sand as the water covered it. The ring had been lost several hours prior to low tide so when I arrived it was actually low tide and the area of the lost ring was just wet sand. Scott showed me the area that he had marked where the ring was lost, I began to check the area and with a few swings of the metal detector the lost ring was found and returned to its rightful owner. A spectator who was watching me recover the ring approached me and gave me a fist bump and the group of people that he was with up on the dry sand of the beach were cheering and clapping.
On 07/31/24, I was contacted by Josh regarding a silver wedding ring that he had lost on the beach at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Josh had taken his ring off and placed it inside of his baseball cap for safe keeping while he went swimming. After he came out of the water Josh placed his hat back on his head forgetting that his ring was inside of it. The ring fell out of the baseball cap and landed in the dry sand where it quickly disappeared and became lost. Josh marked the area where he believed that the ring was in the sand with his sneakers. I began a search of the area and the lost ring was found about a foot away from the sneakers. The ring was then returned to its rightful.
This ring was recovered and returned at Wrightsville Beach NC on 8-25-24.
I received a call yesterday around 10:30am from a gentleman who was at Wrightsville Beach and had lost his ring. He explained he was tossing a ball with others when his ring suddenly fell off and he immediately tried to grab it but a wave came in and took it before he could pick it up. We spoke for awhile and he also explained that he had to catch a flight back to Arizona so he probably wouldn’t be there when I got to the beach but I could give it to his brother who could bring him the ring if I found it. He marked the area very well for me to know where to search and sent me photos of the markers. I drove to the beach and got there around 1:45pm. It was high to when I got there so I knew I would be hunting in the water since he lost it around low to mid tide. Because he marked the area so well I was able to find the area to search with ease. This was a big help. I entered the water and started my search. After about 10 minutes of searching in the water with strong waves I stepped into a trough under the water that was a little above my knees deep. Searching the trough I got a strong solid signal on my metal detector. I used my extreme sandscoop to dig the target and recover the ring. I called him to let him know I found it and sent him pictures of it. He was very happy to hear I found it. I later met with his brother at a rest area along my route home and gave him the ring so he could get it back to his brother. I was very happy to help.
While watching tv at 8:45pm, my phone rings and it’s Welmo from Fort Lee asking if I could help locating his wedding band lost on Belmar, NJ beach. At first I thought he had already returned home and I told him i’d go in the morning but with that beach there are some locals that detect the beach after hours and it may be gone by the morning. He said he was still in Belmar so I agreed to meet him in 15 minutes. Getting to the beach I met up with him. He told me he took his ring off to put lotion on his daughter and placed the ring on her bookbag she brought along and forgot about it. He showed me that area they were sitting by means of picture he took during the day and I started a grid back and forth. Wasn’t doing any good except for trash until my 6th pass through the area and got a great signal and with 1 scoop of sand I had his ring back for him. He was so grateful to get his ring back. A great happy ending to the night.
