My client contacted me asking for help in locating a treasure trove of gold and silver. She was the passenger in the car and dropped her ring. She looked three times and still no luck. Using an endoscope, I was able to look into the seat rails and sure enough, there it was tucked away and out of sight. Watch the video to see the end results.

It was a nice sunny summer day when a gentleman called for assistance. He had been in his back yard hanging out with his dog. When his furry critter ran past him his hands were out along side of the dog when he felt his wedding band slip off his finger. Any of us wold he spent over an hour on his hands and knees poking by hand through his lawn with no success.

After a busy 4th of July holiday I received a call for yet another lost iPhone dock dropped into Lake Union in the heart of Seattle. I gathered the necessary details, collected my gear and headed for or another underwater adventure. The individual that lost this phone was not able to meet up but provided precise details of the vessel they were stepping off of when the phone fell and plunged into the the lake.
With my inflatable kayak, SCUBA gear and recovery equipment I easily located the slip where the vessel was docked. Fist attempt was to use the underwater camera to see if I could spot the phone visually for a potential magnet recovery however the silt proved to be to loose to support the phone on the top of the lake floor. This was absolutely not going to be a visual recovery. After a quick chat with the live-aboard at this boat he confirmed the story as an eyewitness account having seen the phone drop so there was absolute reassurance that there was a lost phone somewhere on the lake bottom.
A dive down to forty feet I was met with quite a bit of typical trash from the years of dock life from above. However with focused efforts I eventually in zero visibility was able to get my under water metal detector over the target. Fishing around in the cold dark silt I eventually pulled the iPhone out of its watery grave for a second chance.

Issac called me requesting my assistance on recovering his crashed drone. He had just got a new DJI Air 3 drone and was enjoying some first flights over Lake Sacajawea. He had collected some nice video of the water fountain in the lake. After a short bit of time flying he shifted his focused to a small island when his flight quickly fell apart. His drone got to close to some tree branches causing the Air 3 drone to bob up and down in the sky as it tried to fly away it just got smacked by some thicker branches causing a total lost of control as it cartwheeled into the ice cold lake below.
A very disappointed Issac and his friend attempted to try to search for the drone wading out into the ice cold lake with nothing more than a pair of sweat pants on. Issac admitted he didn’t last long in the freezing cold water and had to quickly get out. They even brought out a kayak breaking the thin layer of ice and tried looking for anything resembling the drone but they quickly discovered the visibility of the lake waters to be extremely poor. A hook and rope was purchased with efforts throwing the rig in the lake and dragging the line in hoping to snag the bird sadly ended up with no success.
As a very disappointing last chance effort Issac ran a Google search looking to “hire a diver” and landed on The Ring Finders directory. He quickly found the Seattle Ring Hunter and placed a call for help.
Once we started our initial phone conversation I collected all the details I could and was encouraged to hear he had captured the last known GPS coordinate location from the DJI controller. This peaked my interest as I am always very curious to find out how close the GPS will get me to the lost target.
When Issac initially called me the temperatures were close to 18 F so I told him we would have to wait for slightly warmer weather however I assured him I would not forget his mission. It worked out that there was a slight break in the rain with a bit of warming temperatures towards the end of the week so we set a plan to reassess the conditions the night before. After a few days we reviewed our options and the green light was a go for operation “Crashed DJI Drone Lake Sacajawea Search and Recovery”. Issac also informed me that there was still some light snow on the grounds and thin ice on the lake. I still agreed to come down with the appropriate cold water dive gear.

This was actually my last recovery of 2023. I received a call from a couple that was visiting from Florida. They were finalizing all their wedding plans and were preparing to fly back to Florida to get married on New Year’s Eve. They went up Big Cottonwood Canyon to take pictures when he realized his ring was missing. It was a beautiful silver ring with an opal stone.
We made plans to meet the following day to search the area where they had taken pictures. He provided me with some very good intel on possible areas to search. They were staying at a relative’s house about an hour away so I was able to get to the location before they did and I quickly started to search. The snow was not deep and since silver is usually such a high tone, I quickly focused on signals in that range. In about 5 minutes, I had located the ring! They pulled up and I was able to surprise him with the ring! It’s always awesome to see the stress go away when presenting that lost item to someone. I received a text message late at night. Steve was waving to his neighbors when his wedding ring came flying off due to the cold weather. The stone in the ring was a blue sapphire that he and his husband purchased when they adopted their son from Cambodia nearly 22 years ago. We made plans to meet the next day to search in the snow and withing 68 seconds, I was able to locate and return his precious ring. Could be one of the fastest recoveries I have ever had!!! In the middle of high season the SeattleRingHunter gets another call out for a dock dropped iPhone in Lake Union. As this was a dock drop midweek with a busy schedule I opted to take some of my special recovery tools to see if we could “fish” the iPhone 11 off the bottom of the lake without having to do a SCUBA recovery. SCUBA recovery is a labor intensive endeavor requiring a lot of gear to be loaded, transported, as a full cold water diver there is a fair bit of gear used during the search including labor efforts for the tare down after the dive, proper post dive maintenance and stowing of my gear back at my hide out.
By picking the low hanging fruit first I can often times be more efficient on my recovery efforts. If a plan fails I gain some valuable knowledge on how to modify my process for the next go around. The reassuring comfort I carry is the fact that I have a fall back plan allowing me to offer a full underwater dive recovery effort as needed.
