I received a call from Vi this past week stating she lost her gold ring recently. We made plans over the weekend to meet up and she took me to the area where she thought it was. Luckily Vi paid attention to the area because it only took me about 10 minutes to find it! I’m so happy to return the ring to such a nice person!
There it is!

Angie and Steve came to San Diego to enjoy a day at Fiesta Island and the Over-The-Line Tournament going on yesterday. Angie removed her beautiful engagement ring to apply some lotion, set the ring in her lap, and…..well, you can guess the rest. The ring ended up in the soft sand and disappeared from view. They and others around them tried to find the ring, but, to no avail. Some consultation with others, an online search, contact with fellow RingFinder Curtis Cox further north and his referral to me, got the ball rolling. They were still there at the site, so, I gathered my gear and headed out for the normally short 10 mile journey…..and a journey it was. It took an hour to get there, and parking was virtually non-existent. I managed to squeeze between two vehicles parked at the edge of the road (with just a couple of inches on each side to spare) and park down on the beach. A short hike to meet Steve, and an even shorter hike to the search area. This event has been going on here for decades and always draws a huge crowd. The search area was right next to one of the dozens of ball fields, where spectators have been dropping pull tabs, bottle caps, and other metal trash from day one. I expected this to take a while to sift through. Steve and Angie cleared the area of chairs and other items while I fired up the detector and donned my gear. Sure enough, all sorts of signals were hitting my ears with just the slightest movement of the coil. One nice strong 12 on my Equinox alerted me to a shallow target after only a minute or two. I zeroed in on the signal with my pin pointer and pulled Angie’s “precious” out into the sunlight again. Cheers went up all around the area, and a very happy Angie and Steve can now travel home in a much better frame of mind. A pleasure meeting you, thank you for the reward, and best wishes with your upcoming marriage.
Continuing a family tradition of traveling from Houston, TX to spend the summer in East Boothbay, Maine dating back to 1910, Carr lost his platinum wedding band overboard while cleaning his boat, coincidentally named “Over the Edge” I was able to recover the ring despite the very silty seabed at Ocean Point Marina being littered with screws, nails and other bits of metal mixed amongst tons of broken clam shells. The recovery took about 2 hours of dive time, but happily ended in a good memory to be added to those that have kept his family coming back year after year. In addition to a generous reward, Carr treated my wife, daughter and I to a nice lunch. Inspired by the affect of a good meal to rejuvenate my chilled tired body, I will be donating a portion of my reward to Knox County Meals on Wheels.
Tanner called me Thursday about a lost ring.
It belonged to his grandmother and his mother and his wife was wearing it close to the shore with her baby in her arms. The baby wiggled around a little bit and the ring slid off her finger. She had the wherewithal to watch it drop and put her foot on it so that she could mark its location and then waved to get some of the other family members to come give her a hand. Unfortunately there was a little bit of Surf that day, a wave hit her, pushed her around a little bit and she lost the spot where the ring fell. Tanner and his whole family had come over from the Fort Worth area for a vacation. They had aunts, uncles, cousins, lots of kids, his mother, father, there was a whole group of them and the whole topic of conversation was worrying about that ring. When I got there they pointed out about where it could be. I have a top-of-the-line Metal Detector designed for the water. Fortunately they knew pretty closely to where it was lost and it hadn’t been in the water but a day. I got lucky on this recovery and within about 15 minutes I located it to everybody delight. With that recovery i’m sure I made everyone happy. The vacation was saved, nothing to worry about anymore and I was just happy that I could be part of that.
Tess lost her absolutely beautiful wedding and engagement rings while vacationing at the beach. She and friends searched the beach for hours, sifting the sand with no success and it was getting dark. She called me at 9:30 that evening asking if I could help. After discussing details of when and where, it was the best guess than it was lost either on the sandy beach or in the water. I said I would help and I would be there at daylight. Tess met me just as the sun was up enough to see and reviewed the area to search. It was a fairly large area. I decided to search the beach first before lots of people showed up and before the umbrellas went up. The search took about 2 hours. When looking for a gold ring, depending on the metallurgy it could mimic just about any other commonly found metals. Because of that fact I had to dig every signal. I did lots of digging on that beach and did not find her ring. Next step was to search in the water. Fortunately there was not that many signals in the water. I think I dug about 10 targets before coming upon a weird signal, the target data kept jumping around suggesting a soda can but the signals could have been a gold too, so I started digging. Digging has to be done with care to avoid and damage to precious property. It took me three gentle scoops before the target was in my scoop. The entire time I was saying to myself this is a soda can, I know it’s a soda can, but knew I had to dig everything. To my amazement Tess’s cherished ring was there safe and sound. I learn something new just about every time I do a ring recovery, her ring was really three rings probably with different metallurgy!

Peter was sitting on the beach in Ocean City, NJ when he decided to take his wedding band off and place it in the cup holder of his beach chair. He packed up his belongings later in the day, forgetting that the ring was still in the cup holder. He realized it was missing after he got home and gave me a call. Shortly after a quick grid search with my metal detector, I got the signal for the white gold wedding band and it was back on finger in no time.

Mark and Pam have a history of capturing memories of their vacations in Ocean City, NJ by having family portraits taken on the beach. This photo shoot was extra special because the couple is celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary this month. During one of the shots, their rings were placed in the sand near the water’s edge. Unexpectedly, a wave came rushing up out of nowhere, and all three rings were washed into the ocean. Mark reached out to me the day after the rings were lost, and I met him and the rest of the family on the beach. We took some time to figure out where they could be, and then I began to search. I started in the wet sand and worked my way out into the ocean. I got my first signal in knee-deep water. It was Pam’s wedding band! A few feet away, the metal detector went over the second ring, her engagement ring. The third signal was another few feet away. I pulled up
the scoop and was ecstatic to see Mark’s wedding band. It truly was a picture perfect ending and a memory I’m sure they’ll never forget.

My advice to those trying to find their rings inside a vehicle is to check out the international directory of metal detectorists and item recovery specialists called THE RING FINDERS. Here is an example of how I helped a young lady recover her lost engagement ring that she couldn’t find even after 5 hours of searching!
Shay lost her gorgeous 2 carat diamond engagement ring with a peek-a-boo-bridge filled with .75 carat worth of diamonds. The solitaire diamond was a family heirloom from her fiancé Stephen’s grandmother which was placed in the new setting and band specifically picked out by Shay herself.
Here is the backstory of how Shay’s ring was lost. While teaching her daughter how to drive in her 2017 Ford Escape – Titanium Edition , Shay took off her beautiful engagement ring and placed it in the center console (near the shifter) so that she could apply lotion to her dry hands. As she was in the process of putting the jewel back on her hand, it slipped through her fingers and presumably landed on the floor of the Escape. At that part of the driving lesson, Shay was in the driver seat showing her daughter some important techniques (Note: the car was not in motion when the lotion was applied).
Shay simply pulled the car over in a parking lot somewhere in order to retrieve the ring from the floor carpet beside her feet. When she got out of the vehicle to pick up her precious keepsake, it was nowhere to be found! She and her daughter looked for over five hours for the jewel and curiously they couldn’t locate its whereabouts anywhere! The two of them couldn’t believe it! It was if it magically disappeared into thin air!
When Shay told her fiancé Stephen what had happened, he was beyond upset. He was not only angry because of how expensive this engagement ring was worth, but also because of the sentimental value that the main diamond held knowing that it was a family heirloom.
The distraught young lady called and texted after finding my information on the elite international metal detectorist website directory called THE RING FINDERS. Shay read my profile and learned that I am not only a metal detectorist, but I specialize in finding lost items in very difficult places. One such search site where I have much expertise in recovering lost items happens to be in vehicles! That’s all that Shay needed to know prior to her getting in touch with me.
The two of us worked out a time for me to drive out the following evening to Shay’s Alexandria, Virginia neighborhood to conduct the search. I couldn’t wait to attempt to solve this mystery as to where my client’s beloved diamond ring had ended up.
As soon as I arrived in the parking lot where we agreed to do the recovery operation, I said a prayer with Shay, asking the Lord to help me find the missing family heirloom jewel. My client was extremely nervous and anxious to reclaim her most precious possession since it had been MIA for a couple of days.
Next, I got out of my car all of the necessary gear to conduct the search and then I immediately entered the 2017 Ford Escape from the driver’s side area where Shay had been sitting. At first, I looked at all of the obvious spots where one may just happen to have missed seeing the sought-after object, but there was no ring to be discovered anywhere in plain sight.
As soon as I was certain that we were dealing with a more complicated situation, I turned on my endoscope and began to search every crevice and corner where I could place my “video snake”. Still nothing turned up over the next 20 minutes or so of examining places under the seat, in back of the seat and around the other side of the center console (adjacent to the front passenger seat).
Because I have much experience dealing with search scenarios quite like this one, I know when it’s time to up my game and begin probing in even more unlikely spaces and gaps where a precious piece of metal and stones could possibly be hiding. I’m happy to share that when I reached the 40 minute mark of my “investigation”, my endoscope picked up an image that clearly resembled the object that I was so hoping to discover! I finally found Shay’s gorgeous platinum diamond family heirloom engagement ring! It had fallen between the driver’s side seat and the center console and slipped down into the seam of the carpet where two pieces of rug perfectly overlapped each other! Somehow, the ring made its way between the two pieces and traveled under the carpet and down towards the ventilation ducts that were fastened to the metal flooring of the vehicle! There was no way that any human eye would have ever been able to identify the location of this exquisite piece of beauty with where it ended up!
I could not have been happier for my client when I was able to successfully recover the lost jewel! With the assistance of my favorite hook that I fasten to the end of my probe and then placed down below the intricate seat hardware towards the flooring, I was able to carefully pull the ring out from underneath the flooring and joyfully return it to its rightful owner! Indeed, another fantastic finish!
Shay was blown away by my skills and expertise. Her nightmare was finally over the moment I surprised her with my exciting reveal! Hiring a professional ring finder through THE RING FINDERS website was the only answer to Shay’s very difficult situation!

Every call for help in finding a lost ring is just as important as the ones before it or the many coming after it. Each ring has its own story, whether it was passed down from a family member, something someone worked hard for to achieve, or the love of their life slipped it on their finger. Although, all of the rings are very important, once in a while you get the call for something very special that grabs at your heart strings. This was exactly the case for me on this call. Ron called me close to 11 pm on Thursday, June 30th clearly devastated that he had lost his father’s custom-made yellow gold Free Mason’s ring. He told me the ring was specially designed and made for his father by another Free Mason, who was both a friend and a jeweler. Ron’s father has since passed away and this special ring now belongs to Ron. I found out from Ron that he was wearing the ring while throwing a football in the ocean. My first question was if he was right or left-handed, he responded right-handed. My second question was which hand was the ring on. Again, his response was on his right hand. My next questions were what day, time, and how deep was he in the water. His response was that he lost it on Tuesday, around lunch time, and he was about thigh deep. During our text messages he changed the day to Monday. We exchanged other information and I could tell Ron was having a difficult time talking about losing the ring. I found out that he and his family was leaving the next morning. I closed our conversation by asking him to take pictures of the area and send them to me the next morning. After thinking about it, I texted him back and asked him if he could meet me on the beach the next morning at 9 am, he agreed. By meeting him, I could get a firsthand view without having to decipher some pictures.
The next morning, we met as scheduled and he pointed out the area. I don’t remember if it was during our texting the night before or he told me when we met that he actually lost it on Sunday, which was 5 days ago. As we’re talking about additional details, I asked him whether he was facing north or south when he was throwing the football and he responded he was facing east, meaning he was facing seaward. In my mind, I’m thinking this is going to be a tough, if not an impossible search. If he was facing seaward, throwing the ball with the same hand the ring was on and it was 5 days ago, it’s difficult to imagine where his ring ended up. But I love a good challenge, so I told him I’d be back around 2 pm to work the outgoing tide with low tide being at 3:48 pm.
As I’m loading up the car with my detector, the sky opened up and it started pouring rain. No problem, I’m going to get wet anyway, as long as there’s no lightening – I’m good. By the time I got to the beach and the search area, the rain had stopped. No rainbows, but I did get a report of a waterspout less than 5 miles up the beach. I swear, the Big Man upstairs was testing me that day! I started on the line Ron had given me earlier that morning. I started my grid line from the mid tide line and walked out to waist/chest deep water working my way to the south. I’m not sure how far south I went but I was sure I was outside of Ron’s area. I went back to my starting point and started working the grid search north. I did about 10 lines and got a solid hit on my White’s PI. The PI is a great machine, but it has no discrimination, nor does it show any target depth, it just signals there’s some sort of metal underneath the coil. I had already picked up a couple of pull tabs, a few bottle caps and 4 fishing weights, so I figured this was one more piece of junk. A couple of scoop and I had the target out of the hole. I took my foot and spread the sand out, I looked down and saw the Free Mason diamond symbol staring at me. Boom! I just stood there and stared; I couldn’t believe it. What a beautiful ring! I picked it up and walked back to the car to get my phone and take a couple of pictures. I sent a picture of me holding the ring and the ring sitting in the sand to Ron saying, “look familiar?” As I’m driving home, I called him and left a message when he didn’t answer saying “check your text messages and call me.” I figured he was still on the highway driving home. Within a few minutes he called me back and he was so excited he couldn’t talk. I wish I would have been able to hand his ring to him and see his expression, but I’m sure it was one of pure elation and surprise. I’ll get his ring in the mail Tuesday and wait for his picture to post this.

Well, this was our 2nd attempt to find this $5,400 Platinum Ring with Diamonds. The owner had called and explained that the motor on his small 12-foot boat quit on him just 2 docks from his home. His boat was still slowly moving in the water while he attempted to restart the engine and after several hard pulls on the start cord (with no luck) his anger increased. He jerked the starting cord one last time and as he did he felt his ring fly off into the water. He felt he knew exactly where the ring went down but after an exhaustive water search with both our Garrett ATPro and our Excalibur II in the deeper water area(s) we cleared every signal with no luck. We scanned every area 4 to 5 times.
The only thing we can say is that possibly we were in the wrong location(?). With the boat moving and the anger seeping in along with the strength of the last jerk on the cord, that ring could be anywhere in a 50ft by 300ft area in black water.
I believe when we go back, and we will go back, we will extensively widen out our search area… it’s got to be there…we will find it.
We do not always win but we will give our all to every search.
