 **** Ari’s mother Bryn had been on the beach with the family watching her grandson taking surfing lessons. She took off multiple rings setting them on her lap while applying sunscreen. Her wedding ring set and three other rings. One ring was her husband’s ring who had past away just a month before. Late that night after returning to their summer beach house, she realized that her rings must have fallen into the sand.

The next morning her son Ari was able to borrow a metal detector to search the beach. Besides not knowing anything about using a metal detector he had difficulty remembering where they had been sitting. Ari decided that he would try to locate a professional metal detecting service. He went online where he found my contact information. I was only a couple miles away so we met on the beach about 11 am. There were already many beach goers setting up their blankets and umbrellas on the beach. Making it difficult to do a proper grid search. I did a preliminary search not bothering the people set up on the beach.

Returning later that afternoon I set up a large search grid and after 2 hours I found the two ring engagement/wedding ring set. A few minutes later the other three rings showed up in my scoop. All rings very sentimental especially at this time of grieving over the loss of her husband.

The rings survived over 24 hours on a highly populated part of the beach that gets sifted by very efficient beach cleaning machines and the possibility that someone could have accidentally found the rings. 

Knowing this beach well, I had a hard time staying positive about finding multiple rings in this section of Newport Beach. Another lesson for me to stay positive and be persistent.

Lost Diamond Stud Earring Found in Yard

On September 28th, 2018 Dee was in the backyard with her grandchildren when they were attacked by wasps. As she was escaping, Dee accidently knocked off her diamond stud earring. She contacted the other local Ringfinder, and Earl was able to search right away. Incredibly, Earl found the back of the earring! He knew I would be searching and left a marker showing where he found the back. Thank you Earl!

Using Dee’s other earring, I calibrated my detector’s digital read-out and began where Earl found the earring back. I looked carefully through the yard. In every lawn, there are many bits of small metal trash, and this was no exception. After several hours and many false hits, I was forced to stop looking. I regretted telling Dee I couldn’t find the earring, showed her where I searched, and pile of small metal I collected from the lawn.  I also asked her if I could stop by and search again in the future. Even though she was disappointed, Dee thanked me for searching, and even gave me a bonus above my call out fee.

August 31st, 2019 UPDATE: FOUND! Dee didn’t realize it, but her case started me on a mission to find a metal detector that is more sensitive to small diamond stud earrings.  Almost a year later I called Dee to ask if I could search again. This time I was armed with a new specialized detector. Luckily, my son was in town and offered to help. After a couple of hours of very, very small metal targets, he suggested an area to try based on the direction Dee was running. On the third target, he caught a glimpse of sparkle and pulled the earring out of the dirt!

**** Steven was very proud to be a part of a team that won the California State Lacrosse Championship this year. He was devastated when he lost his ring in the sand playing volleyball the day before contacting me.

Steven’s mother had located me and called me the next morning. The loss occurred at a private beach and it would take awhile to get entry to the beach access entry point. When I met Steven on the beach, he walked me over to the zone where he believed the ring came off his finger.

I looked at a 5 ft. square area that he had dug about two feet deep searching for his ring the night before. I was a little concerned that it buried out of detecting range. After setting up my detector I began my search. The “BIG” ring was found about 5 ft. outside the suspected search location. It was a beautiful ring and I could tell how much it meant to Steven when I presented it to him.

Another fun find that came with the privilege to see and detect on this awesome beach. Ringfinders get to go to some unique locations, it’s not just beaches. I can’t begin to share all the awesome places I’ve searched for lost sentimental keepsakes.

Lost Ring in Lake Whitewater, WI – Found!

Lost Ring in Lake Whitewater

I woke up Monday, Labor Day, wondering if I’d get a lost ring call.  Being the official last day of summer, people are using out having a good time with friends and family.  I’ve done searches on Labor Day the past 3-4 years in a row, so odds were good.  People either find me here on www.TheRingFinders.com, or on my personal website looking to rent a metal detector. I checked my email and what do you know? I had an email from Matt looking for help finding his lost ring in Lake Whitewater, WI.

I attended the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater (UWW), so I was familiar with the area.  Prior to leaving, I asked Matt my typical list of questions. How did you lose it? How deep is the water? Did you feel or see the ring fall off?  I rarely get straightforward lost ring calls … but this one was about as perfect as they come.  Matt was moving big rocks in the water to help build up a wall on shore to prevent erosion.  While picking up one of the rocks, he felt his ring slip off.  He was close to shore, so he knew right where he was standing and marked the spot.

When I arrived, there were about a dozen friends and family there for the weekend.  Everyone was intrigued by my equipment and how it worked.  I immediately ran into a problem, my traditional metal detector coil was too large to get in between the rocks. I was guessing that when Matt’s ring fell off, it probably was stuck in between some of the rocks. Luckily, I also had a small metal detector called a pinpointer along.  This allowed me to probe in between the rocks without having to move them all.  After only a couple of minutes, I got a nice buzz on the pinpointer.  I cleared away about a dozen rocks the size of my fist. Then, I felt the edge of the ring and knew I had struck gold!  The lost ring in Lake Whitewater had been found.

Four Diamonds

Take a look at the ring closely, and you’ll see 4 diamonds on the inside of the band.  Matt’s favorite number is 4 and his birthstone is a diamond.  He didn’t want diamonds on the outside of his wedding band, so his wife had them put on the inside as a special touch.  I’ve never seen a ring like this before, which adds to the joy of being able to find the lost ring in Lake Whitewater and return it to Matt.  This was my 84th lost ring found and returned with a metal detector!

Lost Tungsten Wedding Band at Honu Lagoon…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a call from Adam from Victoria, Canada on Sunday. While enjoying the day in the cool waters of Honu Lagoon and playing catch with his lovely wife Kaitlin. During a throw Kaitlin’s Wedding Band came off in chest deep water. Adam immediately took notice to where they were in the water in reference to the shoreline. Marriott personnel told them about my services and how to reach me. I told Adam I’d be there around 8am the next morning as I had another ring hunt in Lagoon 1 & 4. That morning I finished early at Lagoon 1 and decided to use the picture Adam texted me to commence the ring find. As I approached the area I saw a trench cut into the sand shaped like an arrow and recognized this as a mark Adam must have left for a reference point. I started a few grid lines to the North and worked my way towards that trench. When I was nearly directly out from the trench I got a nice tone on the Excalibur and one scoop later there was the glistening ring in my scoop. Adam had told me there was an engraving that said, “and together we will walk” on the inside of the ring. Sure enough that’s what it said so I texted them the good news. We met in the public parking lot for the return and you can see it was all smiles. Aloha to Kaitlin & Adam!

 ****Miles was at Venice Beach, CA. When he lost his silver ring in the sand. He called me and a hour later I met him. He had taken time to hold me a parking space which saved a lot of time. 

It was getting a little windy and his friends were ready to leave. Because he was able to stay in the location it made it easy to find his ring. Within 10 minutes my detector was able to identify ahis silver ring hiding under the sand. 

We took a couple photos then everybody headed for home. Another successful search and return.

Rental Car Key Lost at Venice Beach…Found

I got a call from a young lady who lost her rental car key in the sand at the beach. I had some previous commitments, so I was not able to go and do the search until many hours later. She decided to do the search when I was available later in the evening, and I called her when I was on my way.

We agreed on where to meet, and she and a friend arrived to help me locate the search area. We went out, and I began my grid of the sand. It was about 75 feet to each point of the grid, but I just kept to the pattern. After about 5 grid lines, and many bottle caps, the ladies went back to the car they arrived in. That is when I found the key. I walked out to them. They had gone to retrieve an electronic lantern to help them see better in the darkness. I went over and teased that I thought they had left me, and was assured that was not the case, when I held out the key to their surprise. They were very happy, because the rental company had been a bear for them to deal with all day. Anyway, a great end of the day!

Gold Wedding Band and Special Coin on Chain Lost at Santa Monica Beach…Found and Happily Returned.

DJ called me because he had lost his wedding ring and special coin at the beach the day before, and was wondering if I could help him. We talked about the loss, and where on the beach the loss happened, and I was very pessimistic of being able to make a recovery because detectorists ply that area daily, as well as the coverage of the County beach cleaners. I wasn’t giving him much hope of a recovery because of the area he initially told me the loss occurred. As we further discussed the loss, it came to be that it happened in an area further away from his original disclosure. I then felt there was some hope feeling that maybe all of the factors that would have caused the ring and coin to be gone did not add up. We arranged to meet at about 11:30 PM to conduct the search because I did not want any more time to go by, taking away any other possible factors that would make the recovery impossible.

When we met at the beach, DJ, his wife, and friend took me out to the area they believed the loss to have occurred. It is very hard in the darkness to locate landmarks, and decide how far a person was from the water depending on tides as well. They gave their best estimate, and I began my search. As I was doing my grid, they were examining further down the beach to see if maybe we were in the wrong area. After about 4 passes, DJ came to me thinking I should maybe work in the area further in the direction they were looking. It was not more than 20 feet away, so I told him that I was searching in that direction, and should just continue the grid so as to not miss any possibility. Then when I got to the end of that grid pass, at about 12:00 AM, that sweet gold sound in the head phones. As I scooped, I saw the chain everything was attached to drape down along my scoop, and knew we had success. DJ’s wife looked over when I reached down to recover the ring and coin, and came over expectantly. I put it behind my back and asked if they still wanted me to move over to other spot, and then brought the chain with the ring and coin out, she just beamed. They were so excited, being married just about 1 year, and thinking the ring was gone forever. It was surely a special recovery, having been lost the day before in a highly searched area. A great night for sure!

Rose Gold Wedding Ring Lost in the Sand at Hermosa Beach…Found.

Peter called for help, he had lost his wedding ring while he was playing volleyball at the beach. He had taken the ring off and put it in his bag for safekeeping, but sometime during the day, while taking things out of the bag his ring must have been pulled out, and fell into the sand. It was early in the afternoon when he called, and knowing the beaches to be packed because of the holiday weekend, I asked that we postpone the search to the evening when most people would have left, so I could get parking close to the area of the loss, which he agreed to do.

When I got to the beach, I first met Peter’s wife Victoria because Peter was looking for a parking space. She showed me the area she believed the loss to have occurred, and I began my search, I made a few passes working a little out of the search area to insure that I covered it all. Then on about the 3rd pass, got the sweet tone of gold in the head phones, dug and in my scoop was Peter’s ring. Victoria was standing out from me about 20 feet away when I made the recovery, so I held the ring up in the light of my headlight, and she came running over; Peter was not there yet. When Peter arrived, Victoria ran over to him, got down on one knee, and placed the ring back on his finger; a very cool scene indeed. Needless to say Peter was in total surprise that I had found the ring so quickly. What a fun recovery!

Man’s Rolex Watch Lost and Found in the Lockwoods Folly River, NC

I got a text message from Mark on Thursday, Aug 29th saying that he had lost his Rolex watch, while fishing, in the Lockwoods Folly River and wondered if I could help. At some point, Mark told me that his wife, Joanna, had gotten him the watch as a present and it had a great deal of sentimental value attached. He knew the watch, itself, could be replaced, but not the memories.

I was concerned about the depth of the water and what the bottom of the river was. He said the depth was about 5 feet at low tide, which is pushing my limit, and didn’t know about the bottom. A lot of the marsh bottom in North and South Carolina has what’s called “Pluff Mud.” In earlier century’s it was called “Plough Mud,” because it was used to fertilize cotton fields that were depleted of nutrients. Anyway, it is nasty, it’s made up of dead grasses, fish, crabs, shrimp, and anything else that dies and decays in the water, it stinks, literally! When you step in it, it sucks you down, and what was at your ankles is now at your knees or thighs. So I was real anxious about searching in those kinds of conditions, but agreed to meet him on Saturday. I talked to my son-in-law, Donnie, who is a certified diver, about it and was thinking of him taking this call, but decided I’d give it a shot. Donnie has helped me on a number of searches, and I knew he’d jump at the chance of this search.

On Saturday, Mark and Joanna picked me up at one of the boat docks in Holden Beach, NC and we took a 20-25 minute boat ride to get the search area. Matt told me that the evening he lost his watch that he was having problems with his outboard motor so he was getting his trolling motor ready to use to get him back home. At some point in the process, he hit the trolling motor with his watch making the clasp come apart sending his watch in the water. When we got to the search area, Mark beached his boat and told me the search area was within 15 feet of the stern of the boat. We were bucking a strong current, but managed to search the area for a couple of hours or so. After searching what I could, I knew I was in over my head, and I’d need Donnie and his scuba diving abilities to help. While we were waiting for the tide to come back in, because we were now high and dry, and grounded on the beach; I called Donnie. I let him and Mark work out the details on the date and times both were available.

Fast forward to Monday, Donnie and Mark met at the same boat dock and headed out around 6:30am. I got a text from Donnie about 11:30 saying “No luck” but he was going to get lunch, fill up his air tanks and go back out with Mark and try again. At 6:22pm Donnie texted: “found it!” I got a few details from Donnie about his search, and the picture and video of him and Mark.
