iPhone 13 Lost and Found Under Water, Occoquan River, Virginia

August 7th: Found and returned an iPhone 13 Pro Max lost from a dock.

Ash was working hard at his job with the Carefree Boat Club when his phone slipped out of his pocket and fell into the water. His brother, Time, met me in Woodbridge after I’d recovered a ring and asked me for a business card. Ash called me using Times phone and asked for my help. I agreed to meet Ash at the dock the next morning.

Mrs. Ellis (my safety diver) and I arrived around 11am. As always, we checked the conditions before unpacking the equipment. While on the dock, we met Time who showed us where the phone was lost. When Ash arrived, he provided a detailed description of the incident and location. Visibility in the water was about two feet, and the water was about nine feet deep.

When the phone landed in the water, it planed, much like a paper airplane does when it’s thrown. It ended up under the dock. Nevertheless, I recovered the phone in a record breaking 6 minutes! As I touched the phone, I was surprised to see the screen light up. However, I should not have been surprised, as the newer iPhones are quite water resistant.

Lost White Gold & Diamonds Engagement Ring at Shorebird Beach Waikiki…FOUND!!!

This ring find began when I got a voicemail from Raquel who was on vacation from Atlanta, Georgia with her husband Bill.  While sitting in shallow water at Shorebird Beach Waikiki her White Gold & Diamonds Engagement ring fell off and disappeared in the shore break sand.  They and several others hunted with mask & snorkel for over two hours and couldn’t find the ring.  Raquel “Googled” water metal detecting services and that’s how she found my number.  My work day was nearly over so I called her and said I’d have my wife drop me off at the nearby Army Museum and hunt for her ring.  Thankfully traffic was still light and I was able to get there in about 30 minutes after picking up my detecting gear.  When I arrived Bill & Raquel showed me the area of concern and Bill even stood in the water as a marker so I could keep position as I hunted around beachgoers as the tide and surf was coming up too.  I went out to the deep side of the grid and searched toward shore.  There were a few targets but not the ring.  Raquel assured me she was in very shallow water so I guessed the ring could have been pushed up the shoreline by a swell.  Sure enough as I started gridding the wet sand I got a loud #9 on the Nox and in one scoop I had the target.  Anyone that has hunted this beach knows how coarse and lumpy the sand is so I dumped my scoop in the higher up wet sand and as I glanced down there was Raquel’s stunning ring glistening in the sand.  I bent down picked it up and exclaimed,  “Got it”!  Raquel was so relieved I could see a few tears welling up in her eyes.  We hugged as I handed her back her ring.  Oh the joy of a recovery!  Aloha to Raquel & Bill!

Covell’s Beach, Barnstable, MA: IPhone found and returned

No phone call for this find and return. I was just finishing up an enjoyable evening of metal detecting and heading across the sandy beach when I found the best find of the evening, an IPhone.

The IPhone had a Find My Phone application on it. Unfortunately, I had no idea of how to use the app. I saw the battery was charged and the phone appeared to be functioning properly, but it was “locked” and I did not have the password to “unlock” it. Whatever I did, the phone started ringing. Again, I pressed the displayed prompts and I was connected to Krista.

The phone was Krista’s daughter’s and it had fallen off the beach chair as they were leaving the beach. At home Jenna went to retrieve the phone from the car’s trunk but could not find it. That is when the “Find My Phone” app was activated. If you are reading this blog and have a cell phone, I would suggest you learn about the app if you do not already know about it. As I personally have an Android phone and I have the splash screen instruct anyone that may have found the phone to call my home number. Now I will look into the Find My Phone app and see if there is one for the Android.

Back to the return: After a quick chat Krista said if I waited at the beach, she would be there to pick up the phone in about 15 minutes. I just had to wait as I know how important a cell phone with all the photos and information one needs is very important to them. Besides I also needed some information and photos to complete this blog. The time passed, Krista and Jenna arrived on time and the rest is filled with smiles, Thank Yous, and above all a promise for a personal note for my scrap book of Happy Memories.

*** Brittany’s mother called me asking if I could help,her daughter find a gold earring lost in the sand . After finding out the loss happened the night before and it was at Monarch Bay Club in south Laguna Beach, i told her I could be there within the hour.

They made arrangements for me to get trough the security gate for access to easy parking. We met on the beach near the firepits. She actually lost the earring while searching for her matching earring that was thought to be lost in the same place.

I was able find the earring soon after starting a grid search. The second earring was not there. I could say that with confidence as I spent a lot of time with two different detectors and this was not a small gold target. It just wasn’t there. She agreed after seeing some of the small micro targets I found. Also the best clue was she did not feel or do anything to dislodge the first earring. She only believed it was there because that was where she noticed it missing. 

They were happy to get the one earring and now we are hoping the other earring is turned into the  nearby restaurant or grounds facility. It could also be several other places. I only can tell them I’m confident that the second earring is not in the same location where I had found first one.  All calls are different and I wish I could find everything. You can’t find it if it’s not there.

Brant Beach (LBI) NJ Wedding Band lost for 2 months recovered by Edward Trapper NJ Ring Finder August 2022

Valentina called yesterday after I was tagged on her post about her beautiful wedding ring that was lost in Beach Haven N.J (LBI) almost 2 months ago, on July 4th. We talked for a while, and determined that where it was lost there was a good chance it could still be there. She wasn’t positive the ring was on the beach, but sure did know where her towel was, which is a good starting point for my search. We decided to begin early today before swimmers arrived. About 30 minutes later my machine gave a REAL nice solid tone, and sure enough, the ring was in the scoop. Ring recovered from Lake Vermillion Minnesota

I received a call about a missing ring lost in a lake in Northern Minnesota – Lake Vermillion.  They told me that it was missing in a swimming area and that it came off while playing with some kids in the water.  I said, I would be happy to go up and search for the ring.  We were unable to make schedules work for a couple of weeks. It was 200 miles North from where I was at – to the boat launch.  Then a 10-minute ride by boat out to an island where the cabin was.

The weather was brisk, with overcast sky’s and pretty good chop on the water. A light rain on and off.   Once in the water it though it was warmer than out on the dock. I had brought a load of gear with to cover many obstacles I could face. The cabin owner told me that with poor weather most people fishing fish out in front of their place because the island protects them from the wind.  But on this particular day was not like the normal bad weather days – in the weather was coming out of the south and the normally calm waters were anything but calm.

I concentrated towards the end of the dock in the search. From the information I had received the probability was highest out there.  The water depth at the end of the dock was about 5 ½ feet. I had a snorkel and goggles and would dive down searching.  I was getting a couple of good sounding targets, but the depth kept me from locating and digging them. Also, the waves on the water was not only on the surface it was under water as well and causing all kinds of issue as well.  I did not have enough weights to safely hold me down under water while also allowing me the ability to come up for air regularly which didn’t help matters any.  The homeowner thought about it and brought me out an 8 lb maul, and 4 large horseshoes. That was working, but the combination of waves, currents, lack of air really was more than what I was prepared for. So eventually I gave up out in the deep water and did a primary search of the rest of the beach.  After about 2 – 3 hours of searching we gave up.  I told them I would come back another time.  Northern Minnesota’s weather gets cooler sooner than the lower 2/3 of the state where I come from. I was just not able to get back up again during the 2021 season.

In the spring of 2022, we made arrangements to meet again. This time the weather was more favorable, and the lake was calmer. The difference was the lake was about 1-foot higher waterline then the previous year. Meaning the water at the end of the dock was not over my head.  I brought a battery-operated air compressor with 50’ of hose and a dive regulator that allowed me to go under and search the targets that I had located the previous year. I was finding many different items nails, washers, but no ring.  After about 2 hours of searching the end of the dock, I decided to search the rest of the swimming area.  I spent another hour and a half and now was really beginning to question if I was going to locate the ring.

I know how much rings mean to people, and I always want to give it 110%.  So, making a more methodical search I got a hit on a tone that was in the range that I was looking for, and shallow.  I had to go grab my mask and snorkel off the end of the dock and when I got back and went under – there it was a bright ring laying between two rocks in about 3 – 4 feet of water and about 30’ from shore.  I was getting within 15 -20 minutes of calling the entire area searched when I ran across it. What a feeling.  The cabin owner had stopped out and we had talked 10 minutes earlier and you could kind of tell that he was thinking it was lost. So after finding it, I brought it up to the cabin. When I met him at the back door, I’m sure he was thinking that well we gave it a good try, then I showed him the ring on my little finger. He was elated, “You Found it” The surprise on his face was priceless and he was not the owner of the ring. I let him pass on the news to his daughter and her husband.  They were also so happy.  It was their 10th  anniversary within 2 weeks, and they would be getting the ring back just in time.  While I was not able to see them get the ring, I received the following pictures.

Photographer Lost Her SD Card, Wolf Creek Road, Edson Alberta

Jordan called me this morning requesting my service to locate her 64gb San-disk card which she lost while taking photo shoots of her clients out in a remote area in Yellowhead county.
It was very important to locate the SD card because she had pictures of four different clients on that disk. It would be very expensive to redo all the photo shoots again plus the time and the inconvenience to her clients. The disk was lost in very tall grass. Jordan and some friends searched the area last night for about three hours with no luck. I told Jordan if she put me in the approximate area that she lost the card I would find it. I told her I could be there in about two hours since she is 200 Km away from me.
I meet Jordan at the area and within 30 minutes I found her SD card in perfect condition. Jordan was overwhelmed and very happy to have her card back.

Another Busy Sunday Afternoon!

For reasons that are probably easy to figure out, the weekends can be very busy for Ring Finders like us. This past Sunday was no exception for me. I received two calls within 5 minutes of each other. I had someone working on my house and it was almost dinner time so I sent the first caller to my buddy Brendon. When the second call came in, knowing Brendon would already be on the first call, I asked the woman if I could call her back. I checked with my contractor, and my wife, and decided I could probably make it out to find the second caller’s ring.

Forty minutes later I found myself at Baker Beach once again!
I swear, the sand there just SUCKS rings in like quicksand.

I met these clients on the beach after parking my car. I reviewed with them what they were doing when they lost it and where they thought it might have gone. Within a few short minutes, I had found the ring!

If only all of our ring finds were this easy and quick!

Brant Beach(LBI) NJ Lost Cartier Bangle Bracelet recovered by Edward Trapper NJ Ring Finder August 2022

Got a call from Camille Saturday evening. She had lost her bangle bracelet, but wasn’t sure where. She did have a picture from the night before, which was taken on Brant Beach (LBI) NJ. We figured that was a good place to start. They marked the location in google maps and sent it to me. I arrived at the beach ASAP and after about 1 1/2 hrs. I had no luck finding it. She came down to look where I had been, and we made a few adjustments to the search location. Within 15 min. I had one half of this beautiful Cartier love bracelet in my scoop, and about 10 min later both half’s were safely in my pouch. I walked up to the house to meet her, and told her she wasn’t in the spot she believed she was. With that said, Camille looked down and said, “I guess you had no luck”. I replied, “you were 10′ over” and handed her the bracelet. What a weekend, her birthday was Saturday, her lost bracelet was found, and today her grandson is expected to arrive!!!!!!!!!.

A couple vacationing from New Zealand recently had called me for help to find a precious heirloom diamond wedding ring lost at Del Mar beach San Diego the previous day before.

Here’s  another 911/urgent call I had to arrange and show up promptly or it would not of been found by me!  This is one of the most populated or well known areas at Del Mar that gets slammed by metal detector hobbyists searching for lost treasures on a daily basis. I remember over decade ago…Us locals here use to let these beaches build up for a few days with with freshly dropped targets to hunt for but now that’s long gone!

Fortunately Ambition was on my side this morning weekend as I paused what I was doing and drove straight there to find this sentimental ring for them.    Although it wasn’t lost in a large area, It was basically buried deep in the beach sand where they finger searched for many hours to no avail. Lost jewelry is definitely inevitable to find with out proper metal detecting gear combined with the experience of someone to use them….?
