Ring Found Underwater by Rob Ellis and Ray Jones, Lake Anna, Virginia

Smile!

Henok was having a great time swimming in Lake Anna, Virginia. Then he realized his beautiful (new) wedding band was missing. I called my friend Ray Jones, and we arranged to meet at the lake.
Henok and his friends had anchored a float where they thought the ring had dropped in twelve feet of water. Ray and I enjoy diving together for lost items, and it was his turn to search first. I watched from the surface for over an hour as he covered the area around the float. When he surfaced, Ray told me how easily the area silted out and that there were hydrilla weeds. But luckily, there were no underwater trees or other obstructions. With that information, I decided to use my homemade circle search device.
It meters out exactly 28 inches in a spiral, with a total diameter of thirty feet. It allows me to detect small items in low visibility water. I searched for an hour and a half, while Ray took his turn as the safety surface watch.
After a thorough search, I concluded the ring was not near the float. When we interviewed Henok, he told us where he had jumped in the water off the dock. Since the ring was not near the float, I decided to search that area.
I changed SCUBA tanks and used a modified jackstay line search. I searched back and forth, working parallel to the face of the dock. Withing fifteen minutes I heard a clear sound from my Deus 2 and uncovered Henok’s ring. It was only a few feet from the dock!
Ray and I were thrilled to return Hanok’s ring. After he left, we decided to get back into the water some fun detecting. We found some expensive furniture pieces and put them on the deck for the property owners. Then, Ray found two civil war bullets!!! What a great day!
For my metal detecting friends, here are the target identification numbers on the 4.5g, white and yellow gold ring: Deus 2=60, Equinox 900=25

Al reached out to me requesting my assistance to recover his wedding ring in early October. This is a story of three places: 1) Where they think they lost it; 2) Where they say they lost it; and 3) Where I found it. (I did not find this time) Al mentioned “I’m quite certain I lost my ring in the yard because I was cutting my lawn and in and out of my garage all day.” He suggested I look in the front yard first. I did a very thorough search…no dice. I spoke with Al again and he suggested I look in the back yard next because “I spent a fair amount of time in the back yard too”. Before I began my search in the backyard, I asked about looking in his home, specifically, “did you look under the fridge, oven, washer, dryer, furniture, etc. I began my search in the backyard for about 10 minutes until Al came out from the house and emphatically stated, “hold the presses!”. Al showed me his wedding ring he found under the washer. He washed his hands several times throughout the day, and his ring fit loosely because he lost some weight recently. The ring fell off his finger after washing and drying his hands. It fell on a carpet by the washer and bounce further underneath the washer. Al said, “I looked under the washer, but did not look down far enough. The ring was 6-8 inches on the floor underneath from the edge of the washer…Al was all smiles and relieved…
