Alisa lost her silver “I Love You” ring in the sand about midnight Saturday. I received a text at 1:35am early Sunday morning. It was from Alisa asking for my help to find her silver ring lost at Santa Monica Beach. She would be calling me in the morning. I do take calls anytime day or night because it can make a big difference whether we have a successful search. Rather than wait for the call, I texted her back saying I would be on the beach in Santa Monica at 6:30am.

Alisa replied that her and her boyfriend Ash could meet me near lifeguard tower 25 at 7:30am. When I arrived I just started to grid the area around the lifeguard tower before they arrived. Texting Alisa, I told her I had started. She text me telling me the ring was lost near the benches next to the pedestrian walkway. It was about 100 yards away from the tower.. I walked over to that location and could see finger dragging impressions in the sand.
Starting my grid there paid off with a find of the ring before Alisa and Ash showed up.. I took a picture of the ring texting it to her.
When they arrived Alisa told me she didn’t feel the ring slip from her finger. She did know that the ring was on her finger when they sat down that evening. She noticed it missing before they left the area. Seven or eight bystanders and couple of police patrolmen helped them look for the ring in the sand for a couple hours.
The ring was special to Alisa as it was given to her by her boyfriend Ash, celebrating 6 months of being together. It was another fun search for me. I hope I never get tired of helping people find their sentimental treasures.     Sunday .. 9-20-15

Ring Lost in Sand .. Venice Beach, CA. .. Found

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Monday .. 6-22-15

Early Monday morning Kayley met with some friends for about an hour on the beach. She set her ring on her sandals when they walked to the water. On the way back to her house she realized her ring must have fallen into the sand. Returning to the place she was sitting, she could not find the ring.
Kayley called me and I was able to meet her about 12 noon. When I walked out on the beach I could see that the beach rake had passed over the area where she said she was sitting. My expectations for a easy recovery were not very positive until she told me that the rake machine had already passed before sitting on the beach.
I set up a grid search. After about a half hour with no success I started to cross grid the location. Kayley was sitting on the sand watching with hope that the next time I dug a target it would be her ring.
Then a young guy, that was part of a surfing school, walked up to Kayley. He wanted to know what we were looking for? She told him about her lost ring and to her surprise he had found it. He returned it to her. I believe that because we set up the search area, we attracted the attention of people around us. The most important thing was that Kayley’s ring was back on he finger where it belongs. She was also able to get to a 2pm yoga class that she was teaching. I call that “Good timing Luck”

Lost Keys Found in Sand .. Newport Beach, CA.

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Sunday .. May 3, 2015

It was a nice morning to go play with my metal detector at the beach before too many people get here. After a couple hours I stopped to talk to another detectorist as I was leaving. That’s when Nader walked up to both of us asking if we had found any car keys. I asked him if he had checked with the lifeguards and he had. Then I told him I was a member of TheRingFinders and had a lot of experience finding lost items at the beach. After asking him a few questions, Nader told me that he and his girlfriend had taken a walk on the beach at 2:30am. When they returned to the car he realized his car keys were missing.
I told him it was possible to find them because the area he laid out was not heavily hunted by other detectorist hunt and the beach cleaning machines do not work Sunday mornings. The other guy with a detector wanted to help with the search so we split the search area and began to grid the dry sand. Nader took off to search the pier and the parking lot. I did ask him to leave his phone number so I could contact him. I have had people ask me if I found an item and not been able to locate them after I found it later in the day. I always have my pen and paper with me.
After covering about a football field area of the beach, the keys showed up in my scoop. I called Nader to give him the good news. He was probably three blocks away, but he showed up breathless. I know he was surprised because he knew how far they walked last night. The keys could have been anywhere. It was a shot in the dark but Lady Luck was working in his favor today. Nader said he did not know that TheRingFinders existed, but he would tell all his friend about our group.

Gold Engagement Ring Found … Newport Beach, CA.

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Wednesday April 29, 2015 .. 6:30pm
Destiny and Carlos came to Newport Beach today to enjoy a day at the beach. Sometime after they set up their beach blanket Destiny stood up for a second brushing off sand off her hands. As she shook her hand her gold/diamond engagement ring went flying into the sand. She and Carlos spent more than two hours sifting sand through their fingers with no luck finding her ring.
Destiny took out her smart phone and googled “how to find a ring in the sand”. That was how she found TheRingFinders.com and our directory. When she called me I told her I was only 3 miles from her location, but it may take about 20 to 30 minutes because traffic is crazy with road construction on Pacific Coast Hwy. I asked them not to leave the location. It is sometimes hard to find the exact location once you leave.
When I arrived the sun was setting with a cool breeze. They were the only people on the beach. They looked worn out and were anxious to go home. I could see the doubt in there eyes, they were not quite sure if a metal detector could find the small gold ring.
I backed off from where she thought it was to get a few practice swings and set up the sensitivity on my detector. First target was a pull tab which sounds similar to a gold ring. Then a second sound that turned out to be Destiny’s ring. She said, ” I love that machine”.. It turned out to be a good day at the beach except for two hours of frustration running their fingers through the sand. It was a pleasure to be able to help this young couple.

Ring Lost in Surf … La Jolla Shores, CA. .. Found with Metal Detector

Ring Lost in Surf … La Jolla Shores, CA. … Found with Metal Detector

Today we have a nice low tide about 2pm. This is a good time to detect on the beach in the wet sand without bothering sunbathers on the dry sand. I arrived at La Jolla Shores beach about noon. After about a half hour messing around the fire pits a man walked up to me asking me if I could help him find his ring. I told him I was a member of TheRingFinders and gave him my card with our website information. His name was FX which is short for a longer name. He is visiting from Seattle, WA. Earlier in he morning at hi tide he had been surfing when his gold wedding ring of 15 years slipped of his finger. He felt it slip off when he was in about knee deep water but it disappeared right away. FX walked me over to the location which he had remembered was directly in front of the lifeguard tower.
I told him that I had to work the area slow and thorough as this is a game of inches. If I miss it by an inch, it could take hours to find it. He just stood by with his smart phone reading TheRingFinders website. I made a long pass to the waterline then returned toward the beach. Just before turning around for my third pass I heard a good tone that I knew was gold. There under 2 inches of wet sand was FX’s gold wedding band. Another good memory for a vacation holiday. Also a great smile for me to remember. After a many years of finding rings for people I go by beaches remembering the people and their rings that I have found and returned. Making good memories for everybody is part of what we do.

Diamond Engagement and Wedding Rings found in Sand … Laguna Beach, CA.

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Sunday … February 15, 2015

imageSarah and her husband had spent the day at Laguna Beach. The weather has been awesome, sunny and temperatures in the mid 80’s. They left about 2pm to get on the road before traffic got too bad. Thirty minutes down the road Sarah realizimageed she did not have her wedding ring set. Two very special rings that she has worn for over 25 years. Her and her husband had recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last week. She knew that she had put the rings in the cup holder of her beach chair while putting on sunscreen. There was a possibility that the rings were in the sand where they had been sitting. Returning to the beach and sifting through the sand with their fingers with no success . Sarah Google searched “how to find a ring in the sand” . Up popped a link to TheRingFinders with my contact information. I was in my car about 8 miles away, but it took about 20 – 25 minutes to get to her location. Just as I pulled up Sarah’s husband found the larger ring. I was able to locate the smaller ring after a few swings of my CTX3030 minelab metal detector. It was a weak signal which may have been because it was in a vertical position. It may have been buried a little deeper because they had been moving around a lot of sand doing their search. What’s most important is Sarah has both of her very special rings back on her finger, hopefully for another 25 years. Sarah commented how her smart phone and the internet worked to bring us together. I agree, I have the metal detecting equipment and know how to use them, but the smart phones and internet makes these recoveries happen.

Diamond Engagement Ring .. Found .. San Clemente, CA. Beach

  • from Newport Beach (California, United States)

Alexis and Andrew had gone to San Clemente State Beach on Saturday 1/17/15. They walked about three hundred yards south of the main entrance to set up for the day. Before going out in the water Alexis still had her engagement ring on her finger. She put it into the pocket of her blouse and carefully laid it with the rest of their belongings. When they began to leave she picked up her blouse and decided to hang it on her backpack, forgetting that the ring was in the pocket. After walking several blocks through the sand to get to their car she went to get her ring from the pocket and it was not there. Andrew, Alexis and their friends looked through the immediate area with their hands, but it could have fallen out during the long walk to the car. They gave up the search. After returning home Alexis went on line locating TheRingFinders.com .

imageimage I received the call at about 3:30pm while detecting at Huntington Beach. It took me awhile to walk a half mile to my car, but I was able to me Alexis and Andrew at 5pm. We talked about the circumstances leading to the loss of the ring. I explained to them how my equipment works. Some people think metal detectors can find things several feet from the coil. Other people do not believe the work for such small items as rings. I knew it was possible to search the long walk back to the parking lot, but the best place to start would be where she picked up her blouse. Sometimes other persons move an item containing the ring or keys not knowing something was hidden inside. I set up an area to grid search about 40’x30′.. Making six passes parallel to the beach with out success, I setup my CTX 3030 to beach mode – all metal and began a cross grid. The next move would have been the long walk back to the parking area. (time consuming and the sun was setting). Three 30 foot passes to and from the water I got a nice 12-02 signal. Calling Alexis over to see the signal and hear the sound, I told her this is your ring and I scooped it. It was a beautiful ring. She dropped to her knees in tears of joy. Andrew also came over to thank me telling me that he had all but given up on ever seeing their ring again. It was a great day and I got another lesson of humility. It is a game of inches and it pays to cross check.
