*** A nice lady named Summer called asking for help to find two rings that may have fallen out of her beach bag. Summer was at her local volleyball court in Marina Del Rey, CA. the day before calling me. She wasn’t sure but thought her two favorite rings may be in the sand. They also could be anywhere between the beach and her home a mile from where she had taken the rings off, placing them in her beach bag.

Lately I have had several calls for other lost pieces of jewelry that had inadvertently pulled out of bags or purses. I told her it’s very possible the rings could still be there. At least I can scan the area and tell her the rings are not there. 

We met at Marina Del Rey beach volleyball recreation area an hour later. She was able to put me on the exact spot where the bag had been the day before. Turned on the metal detector making a few adjustments then taking a couple practice swings. A short time later I had both rings in the scoop. The made it through the night, hiding in the sand. Needless to say Summer was extremely happy and relieved that her favorite rings were not lost forever.. 

I like it when rings are lost in sand, soft dirt or grass. That way the lost items can hide from someone accidentally finding them and not knowing how or where to find the owners. All in all it was another great day of recovering sentimental rings for such a nice lady..

*** Kyle and His wife live in Costa Mesa. They brought their children to Marina Park in Newport Beach Bay for the afternoon. It’s a popular family beach with no waves and lots of things for younger kids to keep busy playing on swings, etc.

They spent three or four hours there, returning home five mile away. That’s when Kyle realized his ring was missing. He had not been in the water but he had a strong feeling his wedding band had to be at Marina Park which is mostly beach sand. 

He called me saying he knew he can’t find his ring without a metal detector. He could meet me after I finished a my errand. I told him the area he lost the ring was on my way home and I would give him my ETA when I was leaving for the location he believe his ring was hiding. 

Kyle met me while it was still light outside. He showed me a 40’x50’ ft area he had been most the day. I asked him where he might think it would be. He pointed to where he had remembered putting on sunscreen. A few swings of my detector coil ..” Boom” Kyle’s ring in my sand scoop.

His wife went crazy happy celebrating the find. Kyle gave me the big man hug , then his wife did the same. Very emotional and I could tell how important this symbol of their love was to the both of them..

** I was called by Mikael asking for help to find his wife’s white gold diamond engagement ring. They are visiting from Belgium and will be returning in two days. His wife, Melanie had been standing in the patio of their hotel room, she picked up a leaf off a table, throwing it into the landscaping. Both rings of her white gold diamond wedding ring set went flying into the tall thick plants.

Mikael looked into the foliage and was able to find the wedding ring. The next day purchased a metal detector after two unsuccessful days of searching for the 1-1/2 ct. gold engagement ring he hired a guy with a metal detector to help him. Together they pulled more than half the thick 2 ft. high plants out of the soil. The planter was approximately 10ft. x 16ft. But there was a possibility if the ring took a odd bounce it could have gone into another planter or the patio.

I showed up to search the whole area hoping the ring may have been masked by large metal staples. It was also possible that they may have missed the ring with inferior metal detectors. It was important to me to get into searching with the mind thought that it had not been searched.

Three hours into the search, I was giving up hope. I actually told Mikael I only had a few places to eliminate before calling the search off. We had been concentrating on the area closest to where the wedding ring was found. I remembered a couple other searches where the engagement ring went quite a bit further that the smaller ring. 

I crawled into the last remaining thick plants with my Deus 2 high-frequency coil and following up with the Garrett Pinpointer. My last signal was Melanie’s beautiful engagement ring totally lodged into the base of thick plants, more that 12 ft. from where the other ring was found.. Unbelievable for me, but such a relief and joy for Mikael and Melanie. They just have no idea how close I came to calling this a “no find”…  Also, it’s not easy to crawl on your hands and knees in wet planter soil for three hours. Fatigued, frustrated and mentally defeated was taking over my stubbornness. Then the joy of the recovery kicks in and I forget how I almost gave up..

*** Deana and the ladies in her family had a beach outing at Newport Beach. Some time during their stay, her gold necklace with a gold pendant broke. Sometime before she could put the necklace in a safe place, Deana dropped the necklace in the sand. She must have been distracted and didn’t realize the chain was missing for an hour or more.

The chain with the pendant attached had to be in the area the ladies were sitting. It was probably a 40ft. square area. Their attempts to find it were futile. One of the women called me, asking for help. They were running late and had to return home soon. I assured them we could find the lost piece of jewelry in a short time if they stayed at the area of the loss. 

I arrived shortly after the call and began the grid search. Success didn’t come as quick as some beach recoveries but the necklace with the pendant showed up at the edge of the search zone. Everybody was amazed that such a small item eluded them and how efficient the metal detector was. They had been packing up as I searched, so we got them on the road in less than 20 minutes

** Kevin called me while he was searching the sand for his wedding ring.. He said he had been at a Newport Beach location with his wife and young child. The had a small pop up tent for the youngster. He gave his silver wedding band to his wife for safe keeping. She put the ring in the small pocket inside the tent. 

They left the beach returning home. That’s when they checked the tent for the ring. It was not in the pocket. Kevin figured the ring may have fallen in the sand when they picked up their beach equipment. 

His call came to me as I was going to a doctor appointment. I had enough time to stop by to see the suspected area of the loss. I only had a minute to talk to him and assured him would return to scan the area he showed me. 

When I returned two hours later, I did a preliminary search as there were too many people on the beach to be thorough. I did eliminate a major area except where other beach goers were set up. I don’t like to ask people to move, especially when the ring could be anywhere, in the sand, in the car, or the garage. 

Long story short, I came back a 7pm and had the whole beach clear of people. After 20 minutes I had the silver ring in my beach sand scoop. I called Kevin and he was very excited. He told me that today was their 10th wedding anniversary. He wife was so happy.

*** I was detecting on one of my local beaches when a guy walked up to me. I expected him to ask me   questions about the metal detector, which happens too often on the beaches. He actually asked me if I could find a tungsten wedding ring he had lost in the dry sand.

He showed me an area where he believed the ring to be, then walked over to his group. After a few minutes swinging my detector coil over the sand, I got a signal that turned out to be his ring.. I walked over to surprise him with his ring. It happened so fast that I did7het his name. The important thing is that he has his ring now.

‘Timing is important call as soon as possible.. Metal Detector is the right tool to find a sentimental keepsake. It does take time to learn how to operate a metal detector. Also remember entry level metal detectors are not always efficient, especially at the beach.

*** I was a very summer day in Southern California and the beaches were packed. Finlay and his family were at Huntington State Beach when he lost his gold wedding band while brushing off sand with his hand. They search a small area for more than an hour before conceding that it was an futile task without the proper equipment.

While scanning the internet for a place to rent or buy a metal detector they found my contact information. He called, I got the location and was on the road. Even though it was less than 5 miles away. The line of cars waiting to get into the State Beach was more than a mile long at all three entrances. 

Plan “B” for beach access on days like this is to use my Segway. I found parking a couple miles south and rode the Segway to the location, using the bicycle/ pedestrian path. 

We connected by using the cellphone. The search area was small so the recovery was quick. They were a very grateful couple and it was my pleasures to be available to help them. We also have to remember how modern day technologies helped make this possible.

** Seol was visiting Huntington Beach, CA. from New York. This was her last day in Southern California so she wanted to take a swim in the Pacific Ocean. She was not comfortable leaving her cellphone and rental car keys on her towel, so she buried them in the sand at the edge of her towel.  

After her short swim, she came back grabbing her towel to dry off. A few minutes passed before remembering that her important business cellphone and her rental car keys were buried in the sand. She spent a couple hours trying to find them. Someone told her about my service and let her use his phone to call me. 

I met Seol on the beach and was able to help her locate both the cellphone and her rental car keys shortly after arriving. Such a nice lady and a pleasure to help her. Basically she was here alone and didn’t not have and friends or family to help her.  Not having a cellphone would make everything more difficult.  To top it off, her wallet and identification were locked in the car . It would have been a mess trying to replace those items, especially as she had to fly back to New York the next day.

*** Jessie had been at San Clemente, CA. with his family. They were sending the afternoon on the beach. After returning home he discovered that his work truck keys were no longer in his pocket. Panic set in, this could mean missing the next day at work and a lot of trouble getting replacement keys. 

Jessie contacted me asking for help. He wasn’t sure if the keys had been lost in the sand at the beach. He did remember playing with his daughter on the sloping dry sand. That was enough of a clue to warrant a search with a metal detector. At least I could tell him if the keys were not there, if I scanned the known spot where they had been.

I met Jessie after we set up a time and location. I gave him a short explanation of how the metal detector works assuring him if the keys were there, I should be able to find them. Sometimes the recovery could be quick but this search was getting discouraging as I was running out of space to search. Then. Boom!! a great signal that prove to be the elusive keys. Jessie was so happy and relieved that he didn’t have to lose a days work. Plus going through whatever process it was going to take replacing the keys. ** Melody had been at Huntington State Beach in Southern California. She had walked down the the surf line to get her feet wet with no intention to go any deeper in the water. As she stood there, she made a slight jester with her hands and her engagement ring flew off her finger into 6 inches of water. The ring disappeared immediately into the wet sand and water as the wave washed down the slope.

Her friend tried to recover the ring for several hours as the tide was coming in. The beach closes at 10 pm which stopped their search that night. Early the next morning Melody went to a sporting goods store to purchase a metal detector. Her parents were going to drive her from San Bernardino, CA. back to Huntington Beach to continue the search. She was devastated because this engagement ring was irreplaceable as the diamond was actually her fiancés’ late grandmother’s. 

As they were driving Melody found my information on line. She called and I agreed to meet them at the location. Sometimes these can be a quick recovery. That was not the case this time. She list it a a very high tide in shallower water. We were there at the next lowest tide. Two hours searching a double grid pattern and going way outside the area where they thought the loss occurred no success. I even told her that I had done all I could do for this search . After I finish the last 20’x40’ grid, I would return tomorrow, hoping the next high tide might put the ring within detecting range.

Not five minutes later I got a great signal, which turned out to be Melody’s ring. It was way down the slope and in an area that I thought I had gridded thoroughly. Just a reminder that we are looking for the “ needle in the haystack “ .. Also a reminder that it is possible to miss a target even in a known area of the loss.  

Always awesome to help someone like Melody find her very special ring. So far it never gets old.
