Since almost the beginning of the year, I have received only two calls for lost rings. In both cases, the ring owners were certain that the rings were lost inside their homes. Also in both cases, I agreed to assist but before I was able to search, both owners recovered their own rings.

Several days ago I received a call from Morgan who said that his wife Melissa had lost her white gold and diamond wedding ring and band in the yard of their townhouse. The band had been made from her grandfather’s wedding ring and he was her best friend until he passed away several years ago. Morgan was out of town but gave me Melissa’s number so I texted her and set up a time to search the next morning. Melissa had already searched her home and car and was certain that she had pulled her car keys out of a small pouch on the way out of her front door or somewhere in her small yard on the way to her car and the ring set which was also in the pouch must have flown out. Melissa also purchased a metal detector on Amazon and tried to search on her own. I did also find out that the grassy area where she probably lost the set had been cut since the set was lost but the grass was not bagged.

My son Grayson accompanied me with an ancient Bounty Hunter and I had my Equinox 600. After a good bonding time search of about 2 hours in thick St Augustine grass, thick Bermuda grass, an area of shrubs on either side of the porch, and some potted plants including on our knees with a pinpointer, we found scrap metal and a survey stake but were unable to find the ring and band.

Before we left, I asked Melissa to search her home and car again as well as consider other possible search locations. (In a search, you can’t ask too many questions.) I told Melissa to call me if she thought of any other outside locations and I would search them. I asked her to consider looking in places where she didn’t think it was possible for her to lose the rings.

The following morning I received a text from Melissa and she informed me that she had located the ring set! She had searched her home and car again but then remembered that she had used her mother’s car the day she had lost them and that is where she found the rings.

Found Loose Yellow Gold Heirloom Ring in the Garden Bellevue WA

Today I received an email from a gentleman asking if I could help him find his lost ring in the backyard. After a simple conversation I learned that he had been applying some mulch over his newly seeded grass. In doing so his loose gold heirloom ring from his late father flew off his finger while tossing the mulch over the grass. He told me he watch the ring fly off into the bushes over some thick high plant ground cover. He indicated that he had purchased a metal detector on line. While trying to find his ring with the basic metal detector he told me it kept making noises because there was some buried wires for the garden lights making it difficult. He said the known area was about a 10 ft radius and should be easy for me to locate the ring. With the basic details of this loss I agreed to head straight over after work to start the search.

Upon arriving he showed me the area. It was a fairly typical residential garden situation. I was brimming with confidence knowing my equipment and experience is well suited for this type of search. I started fetching gear from my vehicle I selected two search coils and proudly placed them on the drive way as I put my rubber boots on excited for another ring hunt. I gathered a few additional items and it was at this point when I went to grab the rest of my metal detector control head I realized this critical piece of gear was left at home. I am constantly switching gear in my vehicle from SCUBA to land search tools. I have a really good system but even I had to come clean. I said I was a little embarrassed that I had not packed my main detector. I typically pride my self in having more than enough with back up options. This was a work with what you have moment on the spot kind of situation now. Sometimes the trouble shooting process takes a slight detour in your process to see what you can do when the pressure is on. I confessed that I had forgot to pack my main machine but I could still perform a search with what was available as I had another piece of equipment. I then asked him if he could bring out the recently purchased metal detector. He was a little taken back thinking I had another option. I clarified my situation that all I had was my small pin pointer and would like to also use his machine. He quickly brought his machine out from his garage and asked if I knew how to use it? I assured him we would recover his ring based on his report that he watched it fly off his finger.

Having a container of assorted rings on hand I sourced a gold mens wedding band that was close in design to his. I used my ring as a quick test of his basic machine and it worked. We tested the sensitivity of his detector by placing my test ring under some of the vegetation and it had sufficient penetration so my confidence was building. I know at the very least I could find it with my pin pointer but also didn’t want to spend all evening poking around like a mad man either. With his basic machine I quickly cleared a portion of the grass that had mulch thrown over it even though he kept telling me he had watched it go into the bushes. I reassured him that I believe him and just want to clear this easy grass before crawling into the bushes as sometimes rings hit things and bounce so let me clear this easy area first. This took all of just a minute at most to pass over a small area of the grass. Within another minute of swinging over the ground cover I quickly found the yard light wires laying on the surface causing a lot of noice. At this point I got on my hands and knees with my trusty Whites TRX pin pointer in hand and it also got a lot of interference. I became a bit concerned but was able to pull the wire back a bit and finally the pin pointer quieted down. Within just a few swipes around the base of the bush trunk I got that a really strong signal. Could this be the ring after only three minutes of searching? After moving some leaves to my delight I could see that shiny gold ring buried under the rubbish. I pulled his gold heirloom ring out taking him by surprise of how quickly the hunt went.

Lessons Learned:

Always remain humble. As much as you prepare for any situation in life that you have trained for just know obstacles and challenges will occur. Just take a deep breath, assess your inventory of options an do the best with what you have on hand. There is typically a way to succeed if you are patient with yourself and persistent in finding a solution.

All ended well with the recovery of his sentimental heirloom gold ring back on his finger where it belongs…

Matthew contacted me telling me he had just lost his wedding band over a patch of ivy and wanted to know if I could be of help locating it. He told me his family has a commercial sign business and while working a job in Lacey, WA with his father he lost his gold wedding ring. He told me he had recently been working out getting in fit as in a few months he would be off to the National Guard so the ring was now loose fitting. He also told me that his wedding anniversary was just a few weeks away and his wife was concerned about his missing wedding ring.

He remembered having the ring on while working and had become a bit concerned about it slipping off and then seemed to notice something was missing. Sure enough his ring had slipped off while working over the ivy.

Mathew and his father had spent over an hour poking through the ivy and could not locate his ring. At this point they knew they had to get someone with some experience involved. They did an internet search and found TheRingFinders.com and noticed my listing.

Matthew told me he was leaving town later that afternoon. I assured him and he agreed no one would randomly find his ring. I also informed him that I had availability later that same afternoon. I told him based on the information he provided I would head out and start the search and if needed I would contact him for any additional details as necessary. He agreed and the search effort was set in motion.

James contacted me asking for some assistance in recovering his lost gold wedding band. He explained he had been doing some exercises earlier in the morning at Kinnear Park on Queen Ann Hill in Seattle. He had some gymnastic rings attached to the swing set and was doing a few moves. He decided to take his wedding ring off and placed it into his shorts pocket. Most likely after doing a few simple inversions the ring fell out and was quickly obscured by the wood chips below. He poked around looking for his ring but could not locate it. He knew he had to get someone with a metal detector if he was to get his ring back. After a simple Google search he found my profile page on TheRingFinders.com and reached out for assistance. After a few brief moments swing my detector coil over the wood chips I acquired the signal I was looking for. I called him over and with my pin pointer moved the top layer of wood chips aside. Sure enough we acquired the golden target we were after his gold wedding band! A simple search saving one more ring and collecting another appreciative smile.

Valuable lost keys in farm field recovered and returned in Garnett Valley, PA

Received an email from Patrick from Garnet Valley, PA on Monday, July 6, 2020. He had found me online via the Ring Finders Directory after searching for hours for some lost keys. I called him and he told me that he was about 1/3 through mowing his 5 acre farm field when he noticed the tractor keys were no longer in the ignition. Its an older tractor and it continued to run with out the keys so he had no idea at what point they fell out. Patrick’s biggest concern was not just the tractor key…there were 11-12 other keys on the ring that were quite simply important and irreplaceable to him. Since it was probably a 2-3 acre search area I called my bud and fellow Ring Finder, John Favano, to help in search. We hit it yesterday and when we got there the search area was intimidating in size and scope. We called Patrick to pick his brain about where he noticed them missing and the search area boundaries. John and i detected in a side-by-side counter clockwise formation and about 45 minutes into the search….BINGO! To say Patrick was surprised to get his keys back is an understatement…he was sure they were goners! The relief in his voice upon having his keys returned made my day.

Beautiful, Sentimental Gold Wedding Band found and returned in Delaware County, PA

Received and email from Jestine on June 17, 2020 asking for help with a lost ring. Apparently she was holding the beautiful, vintage gold band for a friend while playing Cornhole in her backyard. Turns out the ring was a family heirloom that went back generations. After purchasing a metal detector and trying to find the ring herself over the course of several hours she gave up and consulted the Ring Finders directory. After getting the call and heading in her direction, she lives in Aldan, PA, I gave a call to my bud and fellow Ring Finder, John Favano to see if he wanted to join me for the search. We met there 30 minutes later and met Jestine in her backyard….it was a small backyard with high grass. She walked us through step by step what happened with the lost ring and we got to work. I had barely turned my machine on when I saw a funny smile on John’s face…it took him less then 3 minutes to find the ring! It was a beauty as was Jestine’s reaction when we put it back in her hand.

I received a call from a coworker that his friends daughter had recently lost her iPhone in Greenlake Seattle. She had been sitting on the T dock when her iPhone slipped out of her pocket and sank to the bottom of the lake. I learned it was a new iPhone so there was a good chance this phone had some basic water protections built in. We had high hopes that the phone would still be working after the recovery. After exchanging a few txt messages with Grece and a few screenshot it was very clear where the phone was lost. I told her she would not need to be present during the search. I agreed to head out in the next days to recover her phone and contact her with my results after my efforts.

Upon arriving at Greenlake it was moderately busy with walkers enjoying the park. The weather was absolutely amazing with fresh air pleasantly blowing lightly. The swimming areas of the lake had not been reopened due to social distancing policies so the activity on the lake waters was at a minimum with a few paddlers and some random kids swimming. Having the day at the dock I planned on prioritizing Grece’s iPhone recovery and then spending some additional time doing clean up and treasure hunting at this site.  When time allows it’s alway a great opportunity to pack out some garbage from our local waters. 

Our Greenlake park is extremely popular serving over one million visitors per year. Knowing that this is a very high traffic park and a hand full our our local underwater treasure hunting buddies visit this site often I was not prepared to find as many goodies under the dock waters as I did!

When we received this particular phone call we could not have been happier to help out.  An Aggie ring is a very beloved item that ALL Aggies are proud of and loosing one is just unheard of, especially to a fish.  The depth of the water has much to do with rather or not scuba gear is needed and in this situation, our Garrett ATPro detectors were all that we needed.  The young man who lost his ring made a brilliant move by not panicking but took the time to mark his spot with a GPS locater.

Custom Made Knife slips into Lake Bridgeport, Texas

We received a call from an individual that had a rather odd request as the item lost was not jewelry, it was a very special one-of-a-kind, specially made fish filet knife that meant more to her husband than any of his other knives.  It was a 40th yr anniversary present, none like any other he’d ever received.     Magnet-fishing attempts to retrieve the knife from the 13-15 ft water depth were unsuccessful as the lake bottom held the support beams for their boathouse which was metal also.  Since the magnet-fishing did not work we were then contacted for help.  After deciding on a date/time for us to come out and dive for the knife, we loaded up all of the scuba equipment and headed to Lake Bridgeport, TX.  This fun hunt was cut short because the item was found within 10 minutes of being in the water.  The act of suiting up in the scuba gear and submerging into the water took longer than the actual find.  Now the knife is back on dry land where it belongs and we have a couple of very happy friends.

Lost diamond ring in Newark, DE…Found!

Angie found me in The Ring Finder Directory and contacted me to see if I would be willing to search for her recently lost white gold diamond engagement ring. She conveyed to me that she had been throwing a ball to her dog 2 weeks prior in her backyard and she felt the ring fly off her hand during one of the throws. Unfortunately, not only was her backyard quite large but there was also a large pond that was definitely a possible recipient of the ring. Angie mentioned that she had already had someone with a metal detector search the grounds for many hours and when they failed to recover the ring she began to assume it landed in the pond. She requested that i re-search the ground and then if possible check the pond itself. It was a big job with a lot of ground to cover so I didn’t hesitate to get in touch with my friend and fellow Ring Finder, John Favano, to team up for the mission. We arrived at the property on Thursday, May 14 and met Angie in her backyard. We had her share any and all details on the ring itself and reenact the throw that resulted in the lost ring. She showed us a picture of the ring on her phone as well. Based on the angles of the throw she described and the approximate maximum range the ring could have traveled,  John and I gridded out a 50 yard square area where we thought the ring could have landed. I got in the water and began searching the shallows closest to the home while John focused on searching the yard leading down to pond. While searching we both had quite a few good signals where we thought we had it but they turned out to be trash. We were at it for about an hour when Angie said she needed to run out for 30 minutes. We told her we would continue to search the area. A minute after she pulled out of the driveway I was on the bank of the pond and had a perfect gold ring signal on my machine. I was amazed and crazy excited to look down in the tall grass and see her gorgeous ring laying there.

When Angie returned with her 2 young girls in tow John met her on the driveway and told her I had a question for her. When she walked over to me I suggested to her we were still searching but I wanted to see the picture of her ring on her phone again. She took out her phone and pulled up the picture of the ring…John and I both commented at what a beautiful ring it was…and that’s when I pulled the ring out of my pocket and said that “it sort of looks like this one”. As a Ring Finder you never get immune to the pure, visceral joy and emotional reaction that occurs when handing over a lost ring. Angie could not contain her joy and relief for several minutes and John and I were so pleased we were able to come through for her. High fives between John and I and complete agreement about how great it is to be a Ring Finder!
