Back in October I received a message from a distraught lady that had just lost her wedding ring set on a recent outing. She had found my offer of recovery services on TheRingFinder.com website. As the story developed it turned out to be our local KIRO morning news anchor Colleen O’Brien. She had just lost her wedding ring set on a recent outing to the park with her family. After working with her over the phone she had high hopes that the rings were most likely lost in the park. As they had taken some family photos within the grass amongst the fallen leaves. I also learned that they had made a stop at the local Walgreens where she hopped out for a quick visit before reaching the park. With that in mind I encouraged her to revisit the parking lot of the Walgreens for a second look as they were closer to the location than I.
Being a high traffic public area this made it critical to respond as soon as possible. Our concerns in public parking lots is to scan the area before someone else finds your lost items of value. Even though many people will try to find you not everyone will return expensive wedding rings or even understand the best ways to reach out to the public. I was still on schedule to search the retail parking lot and the park as necessary when the good news came in. Her husband was able to swing by the parking lot soon after our conversation and recovered both of the lost wedding rings for his wife, Colleen.
I am always happy to work with people over the phone and overwhelmed with joy any time someone gets a recovery no matter how it comes about. Just being able to share some insight, hope and encouragement was exactly what this story needed and I was honored to take the call.

Jacob contacted me looking for help in recovering his sentimental gold onyx diamond ring. He explained to me that this was a very special ring he found in his mothers home after she passed so there was a great deal of sentimental attachment. He lost his ring about two months prior in his back yard while winding up a garden hose. He had the ring on his pinky finger making it very loose. Having been a little upset while jerking the garden hose around his gold ring shot off his finger. He told me he remembered watching his ring fly off string into a large bushy tree. He even pointed out an exact spot where he watched his ring disappear into the bushy branches. The overgrowth of this tree is so large you can actually walk inside the canopy andbe totally engulfed into a whole different space. Based on his strong eye witness account I started my search directly on the bearing he pointed out straight into the bush. I spent quite a bit of time searching inside the tree without success. Having knowledge that this was a large gold chunky mens ring and that he has some frustration when the ring got launched I knew it was possible the ring could have traveled some distance. I searched inside the tree until I was satisfied it was not there. At this point I knew I had to surface from the bush and expand my search to the yard.
Within just a few brief moment I located his ring outside of the bushy tree. It was true that he watch his ring fly off however the ring took a bit more angle missing the bushy branches and landing just a few feet to the side. Jacob and his wife were very appreciative to have his ring back on his finger as a special memory of his mother.

On a Sunday morning I received the following message.
Is this Jeff Morgan? I found your contact info on ring finders. I accidentally dropped my platinum wedding ring off the dock in the Anacortes marina last night. I figured it was gone for good but my wife suggested I do some investigation and see if there was anyone who could possibly find it. The water depth there is between 8 and 10 feet depending on the tide. Sorry to bother you on a Sunday morning, but if there is any chance at getting it back I’d be super grateful after 15 years of marriage!
Within minutes of reading his message we were on the phone discussing details and set a plan for a dive recovery a few short days later.
On the day of the recovery we had cold weather however the Puget Sound was calm with no rain. John was able to easily recall and point out exactly where he was standing when he was attempting to flick off some slime from his hand when his ring shot off straight into the water below.
I measured the depth at 17 feet deep, scanned the waters for stray electrical currents, and prepared all of my gear.I also placed my marine radio set to the marina channel at the end of John’s boat as another piece of safety mitigation. When working in an active marina there is a lot of concerns and precautions that need to be taken into account for a safe and successful outcome. With cold water diving in active waters this is a task you should leave to a trained and experienced specialist to perform.
On this dive I chose to use a drop line and my PVC gird system to ensure a safe hassle free recovery. During the dive as I already expected his ring was not visually available with all the silt on the sea floor. If you loose an item don’t think for a minute you going to jump in to freezing cold water and just dive down and find a lost wedding ring, cell phone or car keys. They are heavy and ninety-nine percent of the time hidden under a layer of silt. Once a diver reaches the bottom the silt will cloud up into the water column and you can quickly become disoriented with near zero visibility conditions.
When I reached the drop zone and put my tools to work I quickly located his wedding ring under a cloud of zero visibility silt. Thank you Lord for another successful recovery! This man’s cherished wedding ring will be returned to his finger and its story will continue on.
Of course after I surfaced and reunited John with his heavy platinum wedding ring of fifteen years he was very appreciative of my recovery services.

Sunday morning I received a text from someone asking for some help in finding a ring that had been lost somewhere on the property around their house. They had just learned of my services and said it had been quite a few months. Of course I called to meet Katie as she explained in more detail the events that took place six months prior.
On a nice summer day while preparing food in her kitchen she took her white gold ten year anniversary diamond wedding band off and slipped it into her pant pocket. They proceed to their patio grill where they also enjoyed their dinner over their deck.
After dinner, Katie explained in great detail how she spent the next two hours working in her yard. She had been bending and moving quite a bit. I also learned that in the past she had also lost her driver’s license from this same stretch pant pocket. Fortunately, they found her license at that time. Hearing that other items had escaped this same pair of yoga pants provided a ray of hope that her ring did in fact fall out somewhere in the yard. I agreed to drop by her home after work for a quick visit and to at least get a good start on the search. Currently, at this time of the season, it gets dark rather quickly. Fortunately I have a lot of experience working my equipment in the dark and can still be quite successful.
When I arrive Katie was extremely helpful and to her credit, she did a wonderful job describing all of her detailed actions and movements through her yard. She also added that before she left her yard work that day while still standing outside she noticed the ring was no longer in her pocket. After hearing this key detail I immediately knew the percentage odds of her ring being in the yard went from medium to high probability.
One of the things I like to ask is exactly when and where was the last time you had a clear memory of your ring and where did you notice it was missing. Placing some book ends around the period of loss can really narrow a search down to some priority hot spots to search before expanding out to other areas of possibility.
With some day light left I quickly got started searching in her front yard. Within an hour of searching in the dark I located Katie’s lost white gold ten year, ten diamond wedding band that had been in her from lawn for the past six months.

Yesterday a gentleman contacted me asking if I could help him find his lost platinum wedding band. He explained he had been cleaning up some yard clippings in a very small area of his yard and pitching them into a yard waste bin. He shared his wife was upset over this and that he had to figure out a way to get his ring back. After our brief phone conversation we set a schedule to meet up for the search the next morning.
Having been told that he had a full bin full of yard clippings I came prepared with a tarp, and a few tools to help with the work. After he showed me the area on the side of his home where he had been picking up the clippings it looked like a fairly straight forward search site. He was not wearing gloves and it had been a bit colder out. My first plan was to search the area where he had been picking up the yard clippings. He then showed me the full bin of scraps and when doing so I learned that he had recovered his other wedding band from the top of this bin at the same time he lost the ring I was called to search for. With this new knowledge I focused on clearing the bin of yard clippings first. After I processed the yard waste bin with no ring found we knew it had been cleared and continued on.
After working the side yard for a bit of time scanning the ground still with leftover clippings scattered about and still no ring. He had told me that it was a smaller platinum band but I knew it was still enough for my machine to detect. This just meant the ring could be easily hiding out and I would need to be very diligent in my search as not to miss the ring. In the middle of this work area there is two bushes that had been cut down leaving some sturdy stocks about a foot and a half tall like a porcupine. As I kept searching over the flat dirt and not finding his ring my growing concern was that his ring may have dropped down inside either of these two porcupine bushes. Finally I was left with very little options and started poking my pinpointer trough the deep stalks of the cut back bushes. After processing both bushes and almost no more plant to search my pinpointer went crazy! Bingo I had located his ring and he was very appreciative of all the services provided. It was nice to return this wedding ring of fifteen years back to this gentleman’s finger were it belongs.

I was contacted by a woman that realized her wedding ring went missing. She told me she had recently been in her yard the day prior with damp cold hands raking leaves. She believes her ring may have fallen off during her yard work and wanted a specialist to come do a search for her ring. She lost a single custom made 14k yellow gold wedding band with a solitaire diamond and some tourmalines. She had no inclination of when or where the ring slipped off so after a detailed investigative chat with her I formulated a game plan. I prioritized my areas of search base on the areas she worked in the yard, spent the majority of her time and paid special attention to where she took her work gloves off. Her yard not all that big still had plenty of hiding spots for a dainty wedding ring as any yard does. Knowing that these searches are not always a quick process I wasted no time in getting straight to work clearing areas of interest one after another. After quite a long detailed search process the ring was found in the scariest of places. To think this ring could have been carted off the property for ever. Never a more satisfying feeling than when you recover a precious ring so close to being lost forever! To know we saved another precious wedding ring makes for a great day. The woman was grateful to have received her ring back and I am happy to have been a part of the recovery process. I received a txt in the middle of the night from a lady that was requesting help for a set of keys that fell into the marina. Early that next morning I put my magnet fishing kit in my vehicle before heading out for the day. I sent her an early response asking her to call me after getting her day started for a detailed chat. I learned from our conversation that her friend had lost his keys the night before in the early evening. Their dog was walking on the marina dock in a dimly lit area and fell into the water. Mike in his own words attempting to be the super hero tried to grab the dog, lost his balance and as his body went over as he heard a big splash as his feet hit the water. His first reaction was oh crap my cell phone must have gone in but instead it was his ring of keys he had in his hand. He was quick enough to catch the edge of the dock with both hands so only his feet were in the water. As he looked at the dock he remembered staring straight at the dock cleat marking his position precisely. His buddy lifted him safely out of the water, minus all of his important keys.
I agreed to meet up after work around four o’clock that evening for a first attempt with my magnet kit. Mike met me at the dock and we quickly got under way. I deployed my large magnet that was more than sufficient to nab the keys. I even confirmed before arriving on site that his keys had steel split rings. Knowing brass keys are not magnetic its a point of clarification that should always be considered before wasting time with a magnet. I also learned to our advantage he had a small padlock from his sail boat on the keyring as well. I knew the steel shank would be more than enough to stick to my large magnet. Mike was accurate over our phone conversation earlier that morning that the water was around nine to ten feet deep. Knowing this bit of information made since for an attempt to magnet fish the keys. Soon after starting with the magnet I quickly realized there was a lot of structure near this boat slip and it was not an easy flat bottom. Every bit or so I would have to lift the large magnet several feet over an obstacle and let it back down to try to fish is keys out. This was basically a blind search in the fact that we could not see the bottom and don’t know exactly where the keys fell into the water. Everyone heard the splash of the keys but no one eyeballed the exact entry point. Since Mike was not throwing any items from his hands so we felt fairly confident his keys most likely went straight down from where he was dangling from the side of the dock. Even with this drop zone being extensively search with the magnet I was unable to retrieve the keys.
With the darkness of the evening upon us, a bit of Seattle drizzle and cold wind after a full days work we knew we were done for the night. However I reassured Mike I would be out the next morning to do a full SCUBA recovery of his keys. The next morning I was blessed with great weather and calm waters. Julie called and explained that she had been golfing with a lot of friends just a few weeks prior when she lost three precious wedding rings. She ask me if I would be willing to assist them as they were lost at Desert Canyon Golf Resort near Chelan, WA three hours over the mountain pass. She went further to explain that they no longer live in Washington state and had already planned a return visit to the Seattle area and had set aside one day to make the three hour drive to the golf course to look. She said they were planning on getting some metal detectors and seeing what they could do when a friend suggested they go online and find a metal detecting recovery specialist. A quick search online directed them to TheRingFinders where she found my offering of service for the Pacific North West Washington area.
She went on to explain that she had played a full eighteen holes of golf on that Saturday and Sunday. I asked for more details and learned that just prior to playing on Saturday she took both rings off. She placed them in one of the pockets of her golf pullover windbreaker and zipped it up thinking that would keep them secure. Well unfortunately after nineteen holes of golf when she went to retrieve her precious wedding rings they were gone. The pocket was still zipped up and her pullover was with her the whole time. She had lost a very precious wedding set consisting of her yellow gold diamond wedding band soldered to her yellow gold wedding band that had been custom made in a matching design of her husbands wedding ring. A second white gold wedding band with seven channel set diamonds that was given to her on her 20th wedding anniversary was also lost.
She told me she had found a small hole in the seam of the pocket that allowed both rings to slip to the inside lining of the jacket. At this point I began asking myself where do we even start searching if these rings just fell out of her clothing anywhere along the golf course. She went on to explain that the inside lining was not stitched at the top edge so it was like a bigger internal pocket. Her idea was that the rings most likely spilled out when she was taking the pullover on and off several times while playing nineteen holes of golf. She remembered only taking the pullover off near her golf cart. However exact details of where these actions took place were not so clear as she had played that course two days consecutively and detailed memories started to blur together.
She confirmed she had already made arrangements with the Desert Canyon Golf Resort management and they welcomed her to come back to search the course for her lost rings. She explained that her and her husband, Keith, already had travel plans set to arrive in Seattle on a Wednesday night and were planning to drive out to the golf course that next Thursday morning irregardless of anything else.
It didn’t take long for me to be fully on board to support this mission. I explained to her that Thursday was wide open in my schedule and not to worry about getting additional metal detectors. I explained to her this would be a very challenging search due to the large distance traveled over nineteen holes of golf and not having witnessed the area where the rings were lost. I told her not to worry as I would bring some additional metal detectors for her and Keith to use. Knowing what a large search area we had the more machines the better especially as this site was at distance over the mountain pass it would be more challenging for a revisit so I knew we had to take every advantage of this opportunity.
As planned each of us made the three hour drive over the mountain pass for an early tee time only today we would be swinging metal detectors not clubs. The Desert Canyon staff and local community was amazing. Everyone had been actively searching for the lost wedding rings for the past nineteen days yet to no avail.Our first order of business was heading directly into the pro shop to speak with Rob the manager. It was at this point I learned that one of Julie’s friends had taken several photos of the group throughout that day of golf. Julie had Rob review the photos as she took notes as he did his best to identify what holes were associated with each photo. When he finished reviewing the photos he slid two golf cart keys across the counter and wished us the best.
The weather was typical for Eastern Washington at this time of the year. It was cold and windy but the Lord blessed us by holding back the rain and frost so there was no delays in getting started with the search. I allowed Julie and Keith to lead the way as she best knew key areas of the course where she may have taken the pullover off or put it back on. Still there was not definite spots leaving a lot of unknown possibilities over such an expansive search area involving a lot of active movements while playing golf! Never the less we pressed on starting our search on the front nine holes. After completing the front nine and still no rings we took a lunch break to warm up and refuel. Our search continued on with the back nine as the wind started to pickup and the temperature started to drop. As with many long searches even experienced recovery specialist like myself need to push back the doubt and remain in the game to the very end. Around hole five I began to wonder where these rings were hiding knowing that only a few more holes remained and our search would soon be over.
After four hours of actively searching we reached the 6th hole and with in just a few minutes I had a strong target with excellent numbers on my metal detector. As I started to work the ground with my pin-pointer Keith strutted to get excited as this was the only hole from the set of photos that showed her wearing the pullover at the tee box and no jacket on the green. This meant that Julie absolutely took her pullover off somewhere on this hole. As I worked the ground I pulled her yellow gold wedding set from the thick luscious grass and asked how would you like to have this back. At this point all three of us erupt with excitement and disbelief. Julie is overcome with emotion and so very happy to have her wedding rings back. At this point we all took a few steps back as I continued to work the area for her white gold 20th anniversary ring. Within a minute I pulled her second ring from the thick grass to everyones surprise.
Of all the holes she lost her rings on Desert Canyon’s Signature Hole 6. All who visit this hole are blessed with a breath taking view of thick green golf course grass contrasted with the dried out stubble of the rolling hills sides with the Columbia River below and silver lined cloudy skies above. This beautiful creation in nature is an absolute testimony of how God’s hand prepared a path for us free of obstacles allowing us to experience a successful recovery. These rings representing twenty-five years of marriage, love and memories were recovered and will continue with Julie as a reminder that good things still happen and not to loose faith and hope ever.

Amy called me asking for assistance in locating a lost gold wedding band. She had her late fathers wedding band and had been wearing it for a long time. It had become loose in the past year. She had previously lost the ring once before. She had rented a metal detector but later found the ring in a coat pocket. This second time she lost the ring she rented a metal detector a second time but got busy with other task and never really had a chance to search for her lost ring. When returning her ring the man at our local metal detection shop passed my card on to her for some extra help. When I arrived she had explained to me that she had some good thoughts that it was most likely lost while mowing her front lawn that day. She also told me she had some wrist braces on her right hand that had a bit of material that wrapped around her thumb where she wore her father’s gold wedding band. She knew the ring was loose fitting and suspected it was some where in the yard.
After ten minutes of searching we recovered her fathers ring after having been in the yard for the past six months. The ring survived several lawn mowings and was recovered undamaged in good condition.

Earlier in the day he went to Angle Lake Park for a swim with his daughter and nearly lost it. Fortunately he took his ring off and secured it to his key chain for safe keeping. He did have a strong memory of having his ring back on his finger once he returned home. He told me that he spent some time in his back yard and one of the actions he remembered was playing with his cat. He was dancing around the cat a bit and moving his hands about.
