Car Key Lost in the Woods, Recovered. Elburn Il.

I received a text message from Scott last night 12/20/25 around 6 pm. In the message he told me that he was volunteering at a his local forest preserve early in the day clearing invasive plants and bushes. At the start of their work day Scott put his car key in his jacket pocket and shortly before leaving he reached into the pocket and realized that the car key was missing! He searched online and was lead to a Reddit post that mentioned “The Ring Finders”. We set up a time to meet this morning at the forest preserve. After arriving Scott and I started the 10 minute hike back to where they were working the day before. When we arrived in area of the work I could see lots of footprints in the snow and the large pile of brush that they had piled up. So I started detecting towards the brush pile, covering all of the footprints as I went. Just before reaching the piles I could see some footprints off to my left side and decided to make a sweep over them quick before diving into the giant pile of honeysuckle.  As I did I heard a big grunt of iron. Just as I was bending over to check the signal I could see something black in the snow. It looked like just another leaf or branch, but as I grabbed it I could see the pink keyring moving in the snow!

Success!!

Toronto Trifecta Amazing Winter Ring Recovery

It was an awesome morning and one I will not forget anytime soon.

I got a call from a lady who had taken a slip in her driveway and didn’t realize until later that she had lost all three of her rings. By the time she noticed, they were already buried somewhere under snow and ice.I headed out for a first attempt but Mother Nature had other plans. The ground was frozen solid and the snowpack was thick, so after a thorough search we had to wait for better conditions.

A couple of days later, with warmer temperatures and most of the snow finally melted, I went back for round two. That is when the mystery was solved. The rings were not in the driveway at all. They had ended up in the neighbor’s garden, most likely shoveled there when the snow was cleared after her fall.

This recovery felt more like a gold rush than a ring search. I was chipping away at leftover ice with a hammer, feeling like a miner digging for gold. One by one, all three rings were located and recovered.

The relief and excitement on her face said it all. What started as a painful fall and a stressful loss turned into a happy ending and an unforgettable morning. Another great recovery and a reminder that sometimes patience and persistence make all the difference.

Dominick found my contact information on the Ringfinders web site. He had been taking out the trash the week before at night in the rain. He shook his wet hands to dry them off and Oops off goes the ring. He looked the next day but could not find in the thick grass. He went to google and found a expert in the field of finding lost rings.  It was an easy find with my metal detector but impossible with the naked eye.

Over 160 years ago Mrs Kelly’s great great grandmother was given a very special thick banded gold wedding ring and for all these years it has been in the family and passed down from one generation to another and Mrs Kelly has been planning on passing it down to her children. Mrs Kelly absolutely loves working in her yard planting flowers and tropical plants of all kinds and a couple of weeks ago she realized her gold heirloom ring was missing from her finger. She normally wears her ring all the time but she recently noticed that it was a little loose fitting and thought of getting it resized. Her dear husband came to the rescue and tried his best to find her lost ring…even going so far as to buy a metal detector and even hired a couple of his workers to do a thorough search of the yard. All the while Mrs Kelly was very upset and troubled that her lost ring could not be found. Then one day a plumber friend suggested getting a professional metal detectorist and that led them to theringfinders.com. After meeting Mr Graig and seeing their back yard I realized that I was in for a tough challenge. I began systematically searching the grass, the bushes, the stones and around each bush beginning from the side and making my way towards the back. As I reached the middle of the back yard I was swinging my coil along a small wall of bricks and my detector gave a small chirp and as I peered over the edge I could just make out a small circle on the mulch. Bending closer I could see that it was Mrs Kelly’s lost ring just lying there waiting to be found. And Oh…was Mr Craig surprised that I actually found his wife’s lost gold heirloom ring!

I was out on a search for someone’s well when I got a message from someone who had lost his wedding ring in the snow. So, I messaged back that I could come this evening.

When I got there he showed me the area and explained that he had been sweeping snow off a car and doing a little shoveling during the large snowstorm we had a few days ago. He had also taken off his gloves a couple times to shake the snow off.

So, we got started. We had lost a lot of snow, which helped speed up the search. After getting a few false alarms from foil wrappers, I got a good signal. I moved some leaves and there was his ring! It was still in perfect condition, but nearly had been driven over.

He was so happy and couldn’t wait to tell his wife!

Jessica contacted me yesterday seeking assistance in locating her late father’s in-law gold Signet ring, which was passed down to his son and subsequently to Jessica 5 days ago..

While Jessica was retrieving garbage from the office and transporting it to the back dumpster, she lifted the lid and felt the ring fall off her finger. She believed the ring had fallen into the dumpster. Jessica and a few colleagues emptied and searched the contents of the dumpster without success.

I agreed to conduct a search and met Jessica at her office. She demonstrated how the ring had fallen off her finger, leading her to believe it had entered the dumpster. However, I observed that the ring could not have fallen into the dumpster.

To determine the ring’s potential range, I provided Jessica with a test ring. The ring’s trajectory indicated that I should search the back of the dumpster. I conducted a search in that area, but no results were found. I then searched the front of the dumpster without success.

Next, I initiated a search of the parking lot adjacent to the dumpster, approximately 6 feet away. I detected a Very shallow Signal (VDI) of 70 on my detector and with the only signal in the area, buried in about 2” of packed snow I found her ring.

Jessica was ecstatic that the ring was once again back on her finger.

As a matter of fact all I saw was the gold post of the earring in the s, after surprising, the young man, we decided to take it to the washroom and use a hot water to melt away the ice and snow. The earring was in perfect condition and back to its owner.

Received a text from a very nice young lady asking for help.  Her husband lost his white gold ring the night before while taking out the trash.  He thought he lost it in the snow between the trash can and the mailbox when he took off his gloves.  He was right!  Not much fun hunting when its nine degrees, but finding the ring made it great.
