*** Viet had been surfing at Newport Beach, CA. Just before going into the water he realized he still had his platinum wedding ring on. It was too far back to his car, so Viet put his wedding ring in a pocket of his backpack.

That evening when he got home Viet discovered his ring missing from the back pack. He and his wife drove more that 30 miles back to Newport Beach searching that night in the dry sand with no luck. He returned at 6am the next morning using a loaner metal detector that the lifeguards gave him. 

After two hours he was totally frustrated and he took a few minutes to google search ideas on how to find a ring with a metal detector. That was how he found my information on TheRingFinders metal detecting directory. I live very close to where the loss occurred, so I was on the beach by 9am. Viet was totally frustrated and tired from the many hours of searching. He did feel that he was searching the wrong areas and suggested I try a spot on the beach where he recognized a piece of ribbon in the sand. 

I started my grid search in that location while Viet went to his car for some water. Before he got 30 yards away from me I got a strong signal in my headphones. After retrieving the target I could see the platinum wedding ring in my scoop. I got his attention before he got to his car. When he saw his ring, couldn’t hold back his emotions, he choked up and took a few deep breaths. The sentimental meaning of his wedding ring and the frustration of so many hours of searching for the ring was overwhelming. Now the relief of having his ring back was real after coming so close to thinking it was lost forever.

*** Not all searches are as easy as they sound when you hear a description of the loss during a phone call.  Laura called me shortly after losing a one ounce gold ring while doing gardening in her backyard. She felt it come off her finger. She lives in the Silverlake residential area of Los Angeles, CA. which is about an hour away. We would have about enough time to find the ring before dark.

I was able to meet Laura at her home where she walked me to backyard garden area. It was a beautiful large garden area with many mature Agave and other type plants. The good thing was she had been standing in one spot when she raise her ring hand with an underhand motion. That’s when the heavy yellow gold ring came off her finger.

My plan was to use my detector and pinpointer in the open areas because the heavy ring had a good chance to fall through the plants into the undergrowth. It was very unlikely that it went more than 30 ft. My detector only produced a few targets so I went to the pinpointer to get under the plants. The pinpointer was not able to discriminate and I was using up precious daylight time chasing ferrous targets such as nails, etc. It dark now and I was not satisfied that I had covered underneath the plants thoroughly. Already making plans to come back to search tomorrow.

Giving up on crawling around in the dark with the hand held pinpointer detector, I thought I’d take a few minutes to do visual search with my bright search light. The ring showed up in the heavy leaves of the Agave plants. Laura was there to celebrate the find. I enjoyed being able to help Laura and meeting her husband. They were a very nice couple and we had a very nice visit before I left to return to my home. I love doing this, it doesn’t get old. It’s nice to be retired and have the time to do be available to do these searches.

Irreplaceable Ring Lost in the Sand at Newport Beach, CA. .. Saved from the Beach Cleaning Machine

**** Travis and his girlfriend were at Newport Beach, CA. when his ring slipped off his finger into the dry sand. He bent down to retrieve it. His girlfriend, unaware what had happened saw an opportunity to tackle him while he was in a awkward position. Even though it was a small area they could not find his ring that evening.

Travis’s mother called me after finding my contact information online. She told me that Travis was driving back to the location from 40 miles away. She asked if I could meet him at the beach with my metal detector. She also added that this ring was very sentimental to Travis as it had belonged to his father that had past away recently.

When I met Travis and his girlfriend, we walked out to the beach where he had very good landmarks to get us close to the location of the loss. He had even paced off how many steps from the nearby trash receptacle. 

My heart sank as I we got close to the spot. I could see the dreaded path of the beach sifting machine which only does two passes of the towel line this time of the year. 

I began my search grid over the top of the beach cleaning machine’s path, hoping that I could find evidence that it left some metal trash. Sometimes they just set the machine to get surface trash. Not this time, I could not even find a pull tab. It was hard not to tell Travis that we were possibly too late to find his ring. The city’s maintenance crew boasts that this Beach King can sift items as small as a dime.

This time we were lucky, I expanded the grid search area and Boom!! just five feet outside the Beach King’s path there was Travis’s ring. It was meant to be. His very sentimental ring was not going to be lost forever. This was not the first time that I could have given up easily. It feels so good to know, if I stay positive and persistent we can have a successful search. I love doing this and seeing the happy results of returning a precious keepsake live Travis’s ring.

Lost Mercedes Car Key Strands Couple in Laguna Beach,CA. .. Ringfinder Saves the Day

***  Ricky called me from Laguna Beach, CA. with a desperate request to help him find his only Mercedes car key. It would take five days to and more that $500 to replace the key including the towing fee. To make things worse,  he was on vacation and lives in Las Vegas, NV.

I only asked two questions #1 .. were the keys lost in dry sand and  #2.. can you be there to show me the general location. He said the sand was not wet when the keys were lost but the overnight tide had come up over the area. I met Ricky a half hour at Picnic Cove , Laguna Beach, CA. where he showed me he had set his pants on the sand the night before. He believed his electronic key had fallen out of the back pocket when he picked them up. Although he didn’t discover the keys missing until he got back to his car more than a half hour later.

The tide was receding but still difficult to search. I did a preliminary scan of the upper beach. These were actually a single electronic key fob without any other keys. It’s hard to predict if the key fob would settle under the sand or be pulled further down into the surf. Regular keys or a heavy mans wedding band would normally go straight down into the sand. I couldn’t guarantee that the key fob would still be in the area.

I stayed at the beach for four hours till the tide was low. After a thorough grid search, I found the key 40ft. to the south and approximately 40ft. down the slope under 4”or  5” inches of sand. I rinsed them off in fresh water then texted Ricky the good news. He wa
s there with a big smile and the real miracle was, the key still worked to start his Mercedes after 14 hours in salt water.

I learn something with every type of search and it was certainly special to help him and his lady. Get on the road again.

Key searches can be a problematic because people usually lose them while on a long walk or jogging. Many times other people find them first and don’t know how to return them to the owner. “Suggestion” put a name tag on your Keys and Celphone with you contact information.  There are a lot of honest people out there. Give them a chance to find you.

***  Justin and his friends were at El PortoBeach, one of the Los Angeles County Beaches. They had been throwing a football at the waters edge when Justin’s wedding ring flew off his finger. After an hour of searching with no success, got on line where he located my phone number.

**** Aisha contacted me by cellphone while I was metal detecting on the beach. Her 6 year old daughter had taken mommy’s heirloom ring into the backyard and lost it in the grass. The home was in La Habra with was less than a 45 minute. I met Aisha and her husband, Kobby about an hour before dark.

Sometimes little six year old kids can get confused about where an item like a ring could be lost. We were working towards finding the ring but if it wasn’t there, I could feel eliminate that area. So they could search the other places her daughter had been playing.

I began the grid search under the swings then expanded my area to swing over all the thick grass. The grass was free of metal trash so I

didn’t waist much time checking false signals. Twenty minutes into the search I got a nice gold signal and there was Aisha’s beautiful gold / diamond and blue sapphire ring that her grandmother had worn for years and passed it down to Aisha. ”Irreplaceable “

A happy moment for everyone. We were all relieved to have found it within hours of the loss. They will all sleep well tonight. Late Wednesday evening I received a call from Tim who was with his wife, Nicole at one of the beaches in Laguna Beach, CA. His Tungsten wedding ring had come off his finger while sitting around a fire pit on the sand. They heard it hit the side of the cement fire pit.

It was just about a half hour before the beach and the parking lot closed. Except for the possibility of a lot of metal trash in the search area, I felt it was worth a try to attempt a search even if we only had 10 or 15 minutes before the beach closed. 

When I arrive, Tim and Nicole were the only people in the parking lot. We took a few minutes to go over moment of when the ring came off his finger. I turned on my detector, backing off to get a few test swings in before getting in the zone. As I expected there were many ferrous iron signals (mostly nails).  A few more swings of my search coil and I heard a tone with a good ID number that turned up the very sentimental wedding band in my sand scoop.

Nicole broke out in tears and Tim was also very emotional. 

I was glad that I was able to get to the site of the loss before the next morning. This beach is a favorite location for some hobby detectorists to hit before going to work, especially in the summer. I’m sure it would not of been there the next day. Most Detectirist will return sentimental rings, the problem is finding the person who lost the ring.. Maybe someday there will be an app for that..

***Andrew had lost a heirloom gold w/ diamond ring that his father had bought in Hong Kong back in 1935. The Ring had been given to Andrew who has worn it for close to 30 years.

He lost it in the surf at a beach in Dana Point, CA. while throwing a football wading through knee deep water.

It was high tide the next morning when Andrew called me, which could  interfere with being able to find the ring at that time of day. I explained this to him and agreed to meet him to get the best location of the loss. It will be low tide in 4 hours, so this search may have to be postponed until then.

After getting started I told Andrew I could give it a half hour but it looks like I’ll come back at low tide. No need for him to hang around. 

I went out into waist deep surf just to give a quick try. BOOM! Andrews’s ring was in the scoop. First signal and three or four attempts to retrieve it in between waves. I looked up where Andrew was walking off the beach. I got his attention before he drove off. Then we had a great reunion of him with this 84 year family heirloom ring, very special and irreplaceable.

….. I received a call from a guy named Ridge asking for assistance to help him find his platinum wedding band. Yesterday, he had been at Victoria Beach one of many coves in Laguna Beach, CA. When he got home he realized his platinum wedding ring was missing. He thought that it had either come off in the surf or when he brushed the sand off his towel as he was leaving the beach.

He was on his way the next morning to search the dry sand where he had shook off his towel, although the most probable area his loss was the surf where he was most active.

Even though it was high tide and it would not be productive to search the water, I agreed to meet him where I could eliminate the dry sand area. At the same time I could get the location for a return search at the next low tide.

When we walked to the spot where Ridge had shook out his towel, I asked him if he had done any activity on the dry sand that might cause the ring to slip off his finger. He said that the only thing he can think of was brushing off his towel. He pointed up a little higher on the sloping sand. 

I turned on my metal detector making a few adjustments before walking up the embankment. I began a few swings of my detector telling Ridge I need to do a warm up before getting to the zone he was sitting. Boom! I got a signal right away,  10 ft. from where I was to start my search. Yes! The heavy platinum ring was there in my scoop when I retrieved the signal from the sand.

Both of us were surprised as the odds that the ring was lost in the ocean were much higher than it being in the dry sand. It was another time that it paid off just to search the location that was available while we had the time to eliminate part of several places the ring could have been lost. Also, he was a very happy guy, because he had really all but given up hope that a small ring could be found in a mass of sand. I hope I never get tired of helping people find their sentimental keepsakes.

Ed called me from his home in Rancho Cucamonga after losing his ring at a small beach cove in Laguna Beach, CA. He stumbled onto the TheRingFinders website while trying to seek information about renting a metal detector. 

He told me that his wedding ring was in his beach chair and had fallen out as he left the beach. Now he was 60 miles away from the beach.

Knowing this beach very well and I was less than 8 miles away, I told him it would be unnecessary for him to meet me at the location. Such a small beach, I could be there and grid search the whole area in less than an hour. 

It was already dark when I arrived. I went directly to where Ed described he had been earlier that day. A few bottle caps and pull tabs then, BOOM, ED’s Tungsten Wedding Ring in the scoop. I sent a photo of his ring and he was able to pick the ring up at my place before 10 pm.  I love being able to have the time and the equipment to help people like Ed find such sentimental irreplaceable items like wedding rings.
