Wedding Ring Recovery in a Palo Alto Park

Chris contacted me looking to get the ball rolling with Ring Finders because he had lost his wedding band in a park.  The situation he described is all too common: he had taken his ring off and put it on a carabiner for safe keeping before playing sports.  He remembered putting it on the carabiner along with a water bottle and he remembered having this assembly in tact when he left the field, but when he was back in the car and getting ready to leave he realized his ring was missing.  So Chris reasoned that it was either in the car or on the field, and he decided to make one more search of his car before bringing me in for some assistance after his search proved unsuccessful.  I was pretty confident we would find his ring based on Chris’ prior search and the clarity with which he described what happened.

He and his wife met me at the park this morning and reiterated what he did and the path he took to and from the car.  He also revealed to me that he and some friends had previously searched the area both by eye and with a metal detector.  We agreed to thoroughly search the beginning and end points of his path and to search the path he took if we didn’t find anything at the endpoints.  Our search was starting to get a little longer than expected, to the point where I felt it was a good idea to change to a smaller coil with better target separation and also use slightly different settings on my metal detector that audibly accentuated surface targets.  I was pulling up a fair amount of trash, and at one point even a junk stainless ring!

During my slow grid back to the start point, on the path that Chris took, I hit a very solid signal that was clearly right on the surface.  And sure enough it was sitting right at the base of the grass, just hidden in the green and gold background.  Chris and his wife were in disbelief when I exclaimed, “I got it dude!”, as it seemed their hope was waning due to the prolonged search they had been through.  We were all thrilled that our thorough search proved fruitful in the end.

Destiny spent the day enjoying the beach at Anclote River Park and when she returned to her nearby home, she realized that her two rings were missing! She remembered taking them off and laying them on her towel. One was a sentimental silver ring that belonged to an uncle who had since passed away and the other was a ring she had received for Valentine’s Day. Destiny quickly returned to the park to search but was unable to locate them. A friend told her about me, she reached out, and we set up a search. I searched for about an hour with my Minelab Equinox 900 and I was not able find the Valentine’s ring but fortunately I was able to find and return the sentimental silver ring!

Lost Cobalt Wedding Ring Found – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

It was the day before Valentines. A Wisconsin snowstorm found Milwaukee resident Tim Sobie, blowing snow from his driveway and sidewalk. That was when his unique cobalt wedding ring went missing. Despite his best search efforts Tim was forced to wait until the snow had thawed before resuming his search. Despite his best efforts, however, the ring was nowhere to be seen.

Three weeks later, on March 6th, I received a text message from Tim asking if I might assist. It was a long shot. A public sidewalk presented the troubling thought that a passerby may have found it already. But I could at least search the lawn and driveway areas just in case.

We met the next afternoon. Once on location and while reviewing Tim’s timeline of activities, Tim recalled his snowblower hitting a twig or something in front of his home. It was a logical place to begin searching. Using a sample cobalt ring, I was able to accurately calibrate my XP Deus 2 detector. The cobalt rang up in the high 50’s on the conductivity scale. Armed with this information I began searching the area where Tim had heard the mysterious twig sound.

Just a few swings into the search a clean, high 50’s-signal begged further investigation. Buried under some leaves and grass, Tim’s precious wedding ring appeared. And the smile on Tim’s face tells the rest of the story.

Mike and his wife drove out to the cove in Brigantine, NJ, after work to relax. Mike went to splash his face with water when his ring went flying off into the water. Shortly after, he gave me a call and we met at the street and he drove me out there to search for the ring. After a few sweeps with the metal detector, it was found! Ring Recovery Assistance in Santa Cruz County

A few weeks ago a friend of mine Tom Tanner asked for some assistance in finding a lost ring in Nisene Marks State Park.  I am very familiar with the location as my experience and love for the rugged mountains in this park was one of the reasons I moved to Santa Cruz now ~25 years ago.

We met the couple Maddie and Jace who unfortunately lost their ring and, hiking in two miles, they led us to each of the places they believed they stopped where they could have possibly dropped their ring.  Interestingly, on the way back and feeling somewhat defeated, as we were talking about all the other places it could be, Jace said very convincingly, “I think it’s here in the park.”  So of course we kept searching, going back over some of the places we had already searched.

Amazingly not more than 200 yards from the cars, I heard a bunch of excited shouting ahead of me and Jace turned around as I was searching and yelled, “Tom found it!”.  Sure enough, after a 4 mile adventure, Tom had found Maddie’s beautiful diamond solitaire ring, buried under no more than 1 inch of leaves and redwood duff, right in one of the spots where they thought it might be.

My first assisted ring find was truly a great adventure and even better reunion, and motivated me to join the Ring Finders myself.

Sometimes we do things in the heat of the moment that we later regret. An argument related to an upcoming wedding, an engagement ring gets tossed out of a car window on US 19 and it can’t be found. Jeff searched frantically including using a friend’s metal detector to search the grassy side of the road and when he couldn’t find the ring, he found me on social media. I will admit that I was very doubtful that the ring was still there. Oh me of little faith!

Lost Gold Ring Found in Farmington Hills Michigan

Kiss the Blarney Gold!

Excited to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and with a spring in his step, Walt decided to do some chores around the yard before enjoying some fine food and drink. Upon completion he noticed his gold ring fell off. As we were walking to the backyard, I looked around and didn’t see any rainbows or leprechauns, so I randomly picked an area to start metal detecting. Using my MXT bigfoot coil attached to my shillelagh I started to grid search. Within a few minutes I got a nice signal and sound on the metal detector. Reaching down into the leaves revealed his concealed gold ring! Lifting it out I handed it to Walt who kissed the gold ring and said, May the road always rise to meet you and wherever you go and whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be with you!

Grandfather’s Gold Crucifix Lost in Grassy Area, Found and Returned Leland, NC

A little after 11am this morning, the 21st of March, I got a message from fellow Ring Finder, Steve Ray. The message said “I just got a call about a lost cross where he knows the area, along, but not in a lake. Leland NC, if you’re interested. I’m in Ohio.” Steve also sent a text from the owner, along with a phone number. I messaged Steve back saying, “Yea, I can take it.” I called the number in the text and didn’t get an answer, so I left a voice mail. Within seconds, Matt, the owner, called me back and I got additional information. He agreed with me coming to search, and I told him I’d be there in about an hour.

When I arrived, Matt was standing on the balcony of the apartment and came right down to the parking lot.  As we’re walking out to the area, he explained that when he woke up this morning, he needed to get something out of the car. At the time, his wife had the car keys, and she was out in a back area of the apartments with the dogs. So, he had walked out to get the keys from his wife. While he was out there, he felt the chain break that was holding the Crucifix. He grabbed the chain and thought the Crucifix fell out of his shirt on the ground. He also stated that he searched the area numerous times. He also searched the bedroom, bathroom and rest of the apartment with no luck. As he’s taking me to the area, I searched his path both visually and with the Nox 800. When we got to where he said the chain broke, I started a grid search. It was a small area, maybe 10×20 foot square. Both sides of the area had wire fencings. I checked those areas, which was mostly leaves with my pin pointer. As I’m searching, all of a sudden, he says, “Thank You for coming” and he had a big smile on his face. It only meant one thing! As I turned around to see what he was talking about, he put both hands on my shoulder and squeezed my shoulders. He pointed to the ground, and I could see the Crucifix, which was well blended in with the ground. I love it when things work out for the best. On the way back to my car, Matt told me the Crucifix originally belonged to his grandfather. When Matt’s grandparents hit their 50th wedding anniversary, his grandfather had the Crucifix specially engraved and gave it to wife. Both grandparents have passed and it’s all the more sentimental to Matt as a reminder of his Grandparents every day. It was a beautiful story!
