David lost his wedding ring while swimming at Humbolt Beach a small inter bay beach in Huntington Harbour, Huntington Beach, CA. He posted his problem in the Huntington Beach Community Forum where someone suggested he try contacting me. 

After discussing his loss,  David said he could meet me that morning to show me the general location where he felt the ring come off his finger. I just needed him to point me in the right direction then he could leave to do the errands he had planned that day.

When I arrived there was already a guy detecting in the water. Evidently he had read the lost ring story in the Facebook community forum? I waited for him to get to the other end of the 75 yard wide beach. Then I went into four feet of water and dug two bottle caps. The third target was David’s Tungsten Carbide Wedding ring. I walked out of the water to my car, where I called David making arrangements to meet him a couple miles away.

I’m not sure if the other detector guy found what he was looking for?

Lost Gold Wedding Ring in Yard .. Costa Mesa, CA. .. Found in Grass

Louis called asking if I could help him find a ring in grass at his home. He had set up a plastic kids wading pool in the front yard for his daughter. After deflating the small wading pool and putting it away. He went into the house where he realized that his gold wedding ring was not on his finger. 

He got the idea to rent a metal detector after spending a couple hours crawling through grass. A google search led Louis to call me. He called found out that I was only 5 miles from his house. I showed up at his home a short time after talking to him. The yard was very small with a fair amount of tinfoil and pull tabs. Which prolonged the search but his ring showed up in the grass  a opulent feet outside where he had thought he had been. A nice fin and a beautiful gold ring. Lois was a happy father and grateful to have his wedding ring back where it belongs.

Lost Gold and Diamond Wedding Ring at Beach .. San Clemente, CA. .. Found

Payton and his wife, Madeline were at a local beach in San Clemente, CA. Madeline forgot to leave her rings at home, so she put the three rings in the zippered pocket of her beach chair.

As they were leaving Madeline remembered her rings when they were about 30 feet from where they had been sitting on the sand. She went to get her rings out of the pocket that was partially closed. Only two of the rings were there. The smallest gold ring had somehow fallen out. After not being able to find it in the sand they returned home not far from the beach.

Payton got on the internet and contacted me using TheRingFinders directory. I met him on the road above the beach entrance. When we walked to the beach, a lady walking towards us, ran up to me yelling RingFinder man. She gave me a big hug and told her friends that I had found her wedding ring a few months ago. I know it surprised Payton, he didn’t know me and wasn’t quite sure if my metal detector could find his wife’s small gold ring. 

When we got to the area of the loss there was two other people sitting there. I choose not to ask them to move but asked them if I could swing my detector close to them. Boom! within a few inches of the lady’s feet I got a nice tone from my detector and I dug the small gold ring as Payton watched. 

Another successful recovery and Payton immediately took a photo sent it to Madeline. We had only been on the beach a short time but the walk back to our cars was much more enjoyable than going to the location of the loss. It was a pleasure to help them find a ring that had so much sentimental meaning to both Madeline and Payton.

Lost Unique Silver Wedding Ring in the Sand .. Seal Beach, CA. .. Found and Returned to Owner

Josh called me asking help finding his Silver Wedding Ring. He had lost in the sand at Seal Beach, CA. He wasn’t quite sure of where the ring fell out of his beach chair cupholder. Josh had walked 100 yards across the sand before remembering his ring. When he checked the beach chair the ring was not there.

He found me on TheRingFinders website and called. When I talked to Josh, I only asked two questions, was it in dry sand and could he meet me there in a half hour?

Josh was a little nervous that the ring had fallen out on the long walk across the sand. Lately,  I’ve noticed that the rings seem to fall out of the chair just after they pick up the chair. One more time we were lucky to find the ring within the first three 20 ft. of grid passes. I like finding silver, there is a definite high tone in my earphones which is different from gold and aluminum pull tabs.

I took photos of Josh and his unique David Yurman silver ring. It was another great reunion of a special ring with its owner.

I left my home, met Josh on the beach, found the ring and was back home in less than two hours. ( 15 miles each way) I can’t believe it. I love doing this. Josh was very grateful for how we put this search together with the help of the internet and TheRingFinders website.

James and his family were camping at Leo Carillo State Beach in Malibu, CA. During the morning they went from the campgrounds to the beach about a quarter mile from their campsite.

James asked his father to hold on to his wedding ring when he went swimming in the ocean. While James was swimming his father was up on the dry sand throwing a football. He didn’t feel the ring come off but he was sure he had it on before throwing the football and it wasn’t on his finger when he finished.

The area was probably as large as a basketball ball court. I was sure that our chances of finding the Tungsten Carbide ring were good. It would just take some time. I set up my detector and decided to go down the center of the field and spiraling outward. 

After a short time I got a nice solid tone and dug James’s ring from the sand. James was surprised as most everyone in his family had said the ring is gone. They all believed it was impossible to find it in the mass of sand.

Once I gave the ring to James it was hard for him to give it back to me so I could take a photo for this blog story. This is the kind of reaction I get from people when something special has been found that they thought was lost forever. It was worth the long drive on a busy beach day to help James recover his special wedding band.

Lost Platinum Wedding Rings in Surf While Grunion Hunting .. Newport Beach, CA.

Max and Cherry had read online about how to hunt for grunion on Southern California beaches. Grunions are small sardine sized fish that come up in the surf at nighttime high tide to lay their eggs in wet sand. A lot people think grunion hunting is a hoax. ( google search )

Max thought he should hold both his and Cherry’s platinum wedding rings for safe keeping. Both rings stayed on finger most the evening until he went to rinse the sand off his hands in the surf. He shook his wet hands off and both platinum rings went into to water.

Max called me and we met at the beach the next morning, eight hours after the loss happened. This could be easy if he could get me to the general location. At first Max was not quite sure of where they had been as it was dark when the arrived at the beach that evening.

As I started to grid search the high tide wet beach, after 20 minutes, Max came up to me suggesting that it may be the closer to the next lifeguard tower south. No problem, I could always return to the area I was grinding. 

General location is the key word, within about fifteen minutes I got the first signal and recovered the first ring. Then it was a mater of a few more swings of my search coil the other ring sounded off in my headphones. I marked a spot in the wet sand and asked Max to dig it by hand because I knew it was less than 3” deep. He had fun retrieving his own ring and both Max and Cherry were very excited and happy to have their wedding rings back They have only been married one month. So this wouldn’t have been a good way to start their marriage off.

Jasmine called me four hours after losing both her gold /diamond engagement and wedding ring set in waist deep water at Newport Beach, CA.  She was home now, 50 miles from the beach. Jasmine could barely talk with out crying. It happen at a high tide which gave us a chance to find the rings at the next low tide (4:30am).

As we talked I believed I knew exactly where she had been when the loss occurred. I tried to be realistic about our chances to find the rings. I told The we had a 50/50 chance to find the rings because of the ever changing sand conditions. I’m so glad she sent me a photo of the large rock she had been near when she felt the two rings slip off her finger.  I would have waisted my time going to the wrong location. My plan was to start the search an hour before they met me the next morning at 6:00am.

I had to walk down a hillside walkway as the beach parking isn’t open till 6:00am.  After finding the large rock ( half the size of a house), I started my grid now that it was low tide. Walk straight out on the north of the rock.Just as I got to ankle deep water I got my first signal. “Boom” the big 1.7 ct. diamond engagement ring. Three feet away another much fainter signal but it was a solid tone and it was the yellow gold wedding band with diamonds. 

I met Jasmine and her husband John in the parking lot where I ask her to point out the rock and describe the rings. 

Then I immediately held up her rings. Tears of joy and John kept saying over and over “ I can’t believe it” He almost didn’t come to  meet me because he believed it was impossible to find rings lost in the waves for almost 18 hours.

We had a great talk and they were home probably before 10:00am to enjoy the rest of the day. These ring searches in the ocean surf seem to be successful in cycles. I’ve had several recoveries in a row but then there have been times when they just don’t want to be found, sometimes the people are not sure when or if the ring came off in the water. Also there are times when Mother Nature just will not co-operate, the sand and currents can not be predicted.  You can’t find them if you don’t try.

Lost Heirloom Gold Ring at the Beach in Sand .. Recovered Next Day

I received a call from John Paul, asking how TheRingFinders service works. He was curious if I could help him find a ring that his friend , Jason had lost on the beach.  I explained to him hoe well metal detectors can find rings if he could get me to the general area. 

John Paul has recently move to California from back east. He and his friends had rented these electrics scooters that are very popular at SoCal beach cities. They are set up with an app on his cellphone that gave him the exact location of where the parked the scooters at midnight. When they walked out on the sand to take a quick swim in the ocean. Jason put his heirloom gold ring in his had on the upper beach and forgot to take it out when they finished.

The next morning Jason realized the special ring that had been passed down for more than three generations was somewhere on the beach. He was devastated and sure it was impossible to find. His friend John Paul went to the internet to inquire about metal detector information. That’s how he contacted me. I told him we could give it a try but it would be couple hours till I could meet him.

That was perfect with him and we met and he showed me the possible location. He was not sure and that was ok with me because I have learned that many people can’t remember where they were on these large sandy beaches. I eliminated aloud 400 square feet of dry sand finding a few coins before getting the magic gold tone I was listening for. One scoop was what it took to find Jason’s ring only 3 inches under the soft sand. John Paul was ecstatic breaking into big smile. Jason was not there, he had total given up staying back at the house. So, John Paul,immediately called Jason with the good news. It was John Paul’s persistence and caring for his friend that made this turn out to be a special event that makes me grateful to be a member of TheRingFinders.

Lost Diamond Ear Ring Stud in Grass .. Huntington Beach, CA. .. Found with Metal Detector

The other day a friend of mine asked me if I would be interested in helping him find a white gold diamond stud ear ring. We both have the XP Deus metal detectors with high frequency search coils. Stud ear rings are difficult to find with a metal detector especially if they are white gold or platinum. To add to the problem the small stud ear ring was lost in the grass and there was a lot of small metallic trash.

The loss occurred when Cindy was in the backyard. She was holding a small child when the child grabbed her ear. It was a small area and they were able to find the backing to the stud.  A half dozen family members spent many hours crawling through the grass looking for the tiny diamond stud without any success.

The two of us spent about 15 minutes setting up our detectors using the other stud ear ring. Then we split the area in two sections each side of where the backing was found. I anticipated having to remove much of the trash metal that may be masking the small piece of gold. After about 15 minutes of searching I received a nice solid signal, much stronger than I was listening for. I parted the grass with my fingers to catch the glimmer of the white gold setting. The diamond was not visible. 

I called my friend over to check the signal with his detector and his detector could also pick up the signal.Then we asked Cindy to come over to retrieve her very special gold/ diamond ear ring out of the grass. This was very sentimental to her because it was a gift for her mother several years ago. You can see a happy smile she had in the photo.

Every time I get a chance to try these difficult searches, it’s a confidence booster, when I can make my detector work at its highest level. I have a lot of hours of experience using a metal detector. Sense I’ve been doing ring and jewelry recoveries I’ve been forced to learn more about my metal detecting abilities. Almost every search has its challenges.

Vintage Gold Watch Lost from Beach Chair Cupholder .. Found in Sand at Newport Beach, CA.

This is the fourth time in the last couple weeks that I got a call out for jewelry lost from a beach chair cupholder. Rich and his family are from Phoenix, AZ. They were here on vacation in the Los Angeles area . This day they had been at Newport Beach, CA., where he had put his Vintage Gold Omega watch in the cupholder of his beach chair. At the end of they day, they picked up their belongings to make the trip back to their hotel near LAX airport.

Rich realized that he had not retrieved his watch from the beach chair cupholder just before arriving at the hotel. Rich is a attorney. This was a very sentimental as he had purchased it 30 years ago when he had celebrated winning his first court case. He had plans of passing it down to his son in the future. His wife found my information on line and he called me. 

We met on the beach after he made the 30 mile drive back to Newport Beach. Most the people were off the beach, giving us room to do a proper search. Rich was worried that the watch may have fallen out in the massive dry sand area from the towel line back to the boardwalk. I told him that most of these losses are found near the place the beach chair was picked up. That’s where I started the grid search. If it wasn’t there I would not stop till all the possible sandy hiding places were covered.

After searching the first 50ft x 30ft of dry sand the beautiful gold Omega watch showed up in my sand scoop. Rich was off in the distance shuffling his feet through the sand. He looked at me and I gave him a thumbs up. It was a great reunion with Rich and his very special sentimental watch.

I was happy not to have to search the football field area where it could have been lost. Rich and I had a great conversation as we walked back off the beach with his prized possession. He said his family was anxiously awaiting his call hoping that the search was successful.
