*** Jeremy called me asking for help to find his wedding ring. He reminded me that I had helped him find this same ring a couple years ago.

This time he had been at Churches Surfing Beach near San Onofre State Beach. These beaches are located in San Clemente, CA. which is about a half hour drive for me.

He was sure that he had put the ring in the pocket of his shorts before going out to surf. He believe that the ring may have fallen out of the pocket into the sand, even though he didn’t discover it missing till he returned home. I asked Jeremy if he couple meet me at the location.

It took about an hour to get into San Onofre State Beach parking then walk maybe a third of a mile to the isolated surfing beach. Jeremy had riden his electric bike to meet me. Many times people can meet me but it does help for a successful recovery.

I began a grid search about 10’ outside the 30’x 30’ Jeremy laid out for me. Half way through the second grid line my detector gave me a solid signal which turned out to be his tungsten wedding ring. He was over joyed. I could tell that this ring meant a lot to him.

This search was fun for me because it started with a simple phone call, it was over 20 miles away, we met on a remote part of the beach and Jeremy had his ring back where it belongs, we both went on to enjoy the ready of our day..

***  I received a call from Natalie in Long Beach, CA. She had lost her wedding ring in the backyard while pulling weeds. She had put the gold w/ diamonds ring in her back pocket. When she returned to the house the ring was not in her pocket.

I was able to meet her a few hours later. Natalie showed me the small backyard explaining that she had also had her cellphone in the same pocket as her wedding ring. Evidently the ring came out of her pocket when the she used the cellphone. This is not the first time I’ve heard this same story. It happens quite often because these cellphones have a lip that can drag loose items out of a pocket.

I started by checking the pile of weeds that had been pulled. Then I began the grid search of the 40’x 40’ lawn. It is an older piece of property with a lot of pieces of metal trash in the lawn. I usually search in all metal mode setting with my metal detector. This being a small yard I discriminated out the ferrous metals.

Halfway through the yard I had two similar signals very close to each other. One was a pull tab and the other was Natalie’s beautiful gold diamond wedding ring. It was another successful ring recovery. Natalie was very happy and relieved that she didn’t have to lose sleep worrying about if she could find her ring.

*** Kristal had been married less than a month before losing her white gold diamond wedding ring. She lives in an apartment complex with a nice work out gymnasium near the pool. She walked the half block from her apartment to do a routine exercise session. She had not left her new wedding at her residence, so she wrapped it in her face mask putting in a hand bag. Her idea was protect it from being scratched.

After exercising she walked back to the apartment along a sidewalk. She had been holding the face mask in her hand but didn’t put it on. When she got back home the ring was missing.

One week of checking the grass along the sidewalk, reporting the loss to management, the gardeners, community online forum and posting flyers the ring was still missing.

Kristal called me saying that I was her last hope. We met and she walked me through where she had been when the ring disappeared. The first thing I told her was we are beginning the search now as we walk the path she took that evening. We got to a street crossing and she didn’t want to go any further. I asked that she show me the entire route to make sure I can clear the grassy hiding places. I had not set up to use my metal detector.

As we walked, we visually spotted the white gold diamond wedding ring on the surface of the grass. It had survived the lawnmower and many people that could have easily spotted it. Kristal was more than elated, a very happy and amazed young bride. She told me that she’d  never forget this moment.

This has happened several times where we spot the missing item on the initial walk through. What made this different was that it was lying there for over a week and she said, she had probably walked passed it 20 times. Also, it was a very public area with lots of foot traffic. Moral to the story, “Don’t give up just before the miracle happens

*** Sarah’s daughter had just completed her first day at preschool. Her first day away from her mother. When the little girl ran across the lawn to hug her mother. Sarah dropped to her knees to greet her daughter. A happy memorable moment, until Sarah realized her gold diamond stud earring fell into the grass.

I was on the beach detecting when she called, asking for help. We were able to meet a little more than an hour after discussing what had happened. Sometimes fulltime mothers have trouble getting free from their motherly duties. It’s always nice to have the person that lost the item present at the location.

We met on the front lawn of the private school where she showed me the thick grass and a 15’x15’ area. I had asked her to bring the matching earring in a sandwich baggie so I could test it with my metal detector.

This earring had enough metal to get a fair signal. It still took about 15 minutes to coach a decent reading in the thick growth of grass. I use a high frequency detector for stud earring searches. Sarah was very happy to have her favorite earring set complete. She asked if it was possible to find the custom backing.

It was not easy to locate that piece. I was beginning to think it may have hung up on Sarah’s or her daughter’s clothing, dropping off further from the stud earring. After more than a half hour, I switch to a multi frequency metal detector using a 6” coil. BOOM! the small custom backing was almost 3” deep in the grass, imbedded in the clay mud. I did tell her that the backing was going to be a challenge. After my favorite small gold metal detector didn’t get it. I was surprised that the two pieces were only 12” apart. The important thing was we got both pieces and Sarah went home delighted to have her favorite earring set complete again.

*** Dan and his wife live 60 miles from Dana Point, CA. Their favorite get a way place is Salt Creek Beach which is an Orange County, CA. Beach Park.

He called me asking for help to find his wife’s wedding ring. Most likely lost in the sand. He described it as a small size 3-1/2 white gold ring with small diamonds half way around the ring.

He said he could drive to the beach later that afternoon. I was ready to get on the road to begin the search a couple hours before he could meet me. We agreed that I could start the search earlier using a marked up Google map screen shot. At the beach, timing is number one priority. It’s also very important that someone can guide me to the general location. Most the time when people leave the area of the loss, it’s confusing to find the exact area.

As it worked out I had another call to take care of and I was still able to meet Dan at Salt Creek Beach later that afternoon. The beach goers we’re clearing out which makes it easier to properly grid search thoroughly. He showed me approximately where they had been. I started at the north end, working south. After an hour I was nearing the end of the site he gave me. He then said it could have been more to the south. That was a good move because I got a small white gold ring signal after three more passes. Amazing to see such a small ring in my scoop. These type rings can be missed by many detectors especially in the sand.

Dan was about losing hope but I got to see his big smile and excitement when he picked the ring out of the scoop. A great day at the beach.

*** Malana was with her family vacationing from Utah. Sunday they spent the day on a small LaJolla, CA. beach. She took off her 5 rings before going swimming, laying them on her towel. After leaving the beach, she realized that the rings must have fallen off her towel into the sand. Returning the next morning they were only able to find one ring.

At the end of the third day her friend, Sage had found my contact information while doing a google search. She called me describing what had happened. Malana was only interested in finding the Cartier ring that was very sentimental to her.

It was 6pm when I received the call.  They was hoping I could meet them the next morning. After hearing the story of where, when and how much time had passed, I recommended that we do the search ASAP. The family had reservation at a local restaurant would be able to meet me after they finished their meal.

They sent me a google earth screen shot of the site. I was able to start the grid search an hour and a half before they met me at 9:30pm.

There was half dozen family members present when Malana walked me over to the general area. The beach was free of trash metal targets which worries me. At the edge of the high water, I got a signal that was just like the last 3 Cartier rings I had recently recovered. BOOM! I had dug Malana’s cherished 18k gold ring in the scoop. Everyone began the yell and cheer. It was so loud that a couple of the beach front homes turned on their lights. Now we were in the zone and it took a few more swings of my detector to get the other three rings. I can’t believe that I was able to pick up the thin silver ring that was broken.

What a nice family and Malana was so excited, along with her family and best friend, Sage, who did the internetwork to find me. These beaches are hunted regularly, I could not put this search off till the next day.

**** Faye and her husband Riley were at Huntington City Beach, Orange County, CA. with their two young sons. She had lost her wedding ring near their beach blanket after removing it to apply sun screen.. The area of the loss should have been in a 20’x20’ area.

They had another person with a metal detector searched the location with no success. I was called, asking if I was close enough to help. Fortunately I was just a mile away and was at the location within 15 minutes.

When I arrived Riley described the ring as a small white gold woman’s wedding ring that had small diamonds 3/4 around the band. These can be elusive especially if laying on edge in the sand. Then they did recall two incidents where she went outside the original search site.

They had been searching for several hour by now. As I completed 5 passes of my grid, Riley got a call from his wife who was waiting in the car a the parking lot. She told Riley that this was ”MisSion Impossible ” she was ready to give up and go home.

At the very same moment I dug the signal discovering her wedding ring in my sand scoop. He was elated, then without calling his wife, we walked over to the parking lot. He approached the car not saying a word. He held up the ring for Faye to see. Boom! her eyes lit up then the tears of joy started to flow. We still didn’t under stand why the first detector missed the ring. The ring was recovered and back where it belongs. The important thing was the ring was found. . A very happy couple and it was a pleasure to be a available to help them..

Gold Wedding Ring Lost while Installing Grass Sod in Rialto, CA. .. Found by Stan the Metal Detector Man

Mariano called me after finding my contact information on theringfinders website. He believed his white gold wedding band may have fallen off his finger while installing grass sod in his front yard.

Mariano reviewed several cameras and photos taken the day of the loss. He was very sure the ring was somewhere in the 40’x 75’ front yard. He bought a metal detector from a local sporting goods store. After a couple day of frustration,  trying to understand his new metal detector, he gave up.

When Mariano called me, we made an appointment to meet the next morning. This type of search was a first for me. I knew it could involve rolling back the newly installed grass sod. It could be tedious work if there was a lot of metal trash under the sod.

I began a grid search marking all potential targets with plastic markers. My metal detector has target identification numbers and tones which can be helpful but when searching for important sentimental jewelry, I do not rely on that feature of the metal detector.

After a scan of the whole lawn, there were approximately 20 markers that I would individually check with my pinpointer detector. Mariano was close by, so I explained my next move. I would start with the best signal which had been marked with a double marker.

Both Mariano and I checked  the target. He anxiously pulled back the first 3” of sod revealing his white gold wedding ring perfectly visible as if someone just set it there. ( I believe those rolls of sod are 5 or 6 ft. of long). Again a lucky choice of direction to begin a search.

Mariano immediately let his wife know that the ring was found and called his father who had been a part of the original search. Another happy grateful family that didn’t know a service like this was available.

…Michael and his wife were at Sunset Beach, California. They were shooting videos of each other when Michael rolled down a sand embankment. He immediately felt that his wedding ring had come off. The sand was very dry and deep. The ring just disappeared. Then after  they spent a couple hours searching, a person who saw them searching told them about the ring finders website.

Michael called me and I was able to meet him at the site shortly after talking to him. We walked out to the location while he explained what happened. The embankment was actually a steep sand berm that the county puts up to protect the beach front homes from winter storms.

It was a bit difficult to walk and swing the detector on the steep incline. Everything worked out well and the ring was still shallow enough for the metal detector to give me a decent signal. The ring was recovered several minutes after beginning the grid search.

Michael and his wife were surprised and relieved that the ring was found. They told me that after their attempt to find the ring. Being totally frustrated they felt it was impossible to find such a small item in a sea of sand.  I told them a metal detector is the right tool to find a ring but you need the proper detector and know how to use it.

Another successful recovery for a happy grateful couple.

*** I was detecting around fire pits at Bolsa Chica State Beach, CA., when I found a working cellphone. It must have been dropped in the sand the night before. The phone was locked but it had enough charge in it to receive a call. My hope was that the owner would try calling it from another phone.

The last time I found an iPhone there was a message on the locked screen that said, this phone has been lost and it gave a phone number to contact the owner. That was convenient and easy way to return a iPhone.

I was about to take the phone into the AT&T store for help finding the owner. It had been three days since I found the phone. Just before entering the store, looked at the phone clicking on Emergency Contacts. “Boom” .. three phone numbers that I used to let contacts of Taylor know I have his phone.

Within 10 minutes Taylor called me. We set up a time and place to meet. Taylor was so excited and happy to have his phone returned. I know how he felt because I had also lost my iPhone 11 a couple days before and a couple called me right away. I didn’t have it locked, which could have been a disaster. Security plus expensive to replace $$.
