… John and his wife were enjoying their last day of their vacation at Santa Monica Beach, CA. He stood up near their blanket in the dry sand brushing sand off his leg, when his gold wedding ring went flying into the sand.

He was able to locate me online at TheRingFinders website. I made arrangements to meet him at the location  Our main concern was that he had to catch a flight back to Denver, Colorado soon. He might only have 15 minutes to show me the area of the loss. I suggested that he mark the spot with some markers and continue to grab into the sand. There was always a chance that traffic could delay my arrival.

I parked very close to our meeting place. They were still at the location. It was one of those quick recoveries because John called me shortly after the accidental loss and he stayed at the location. All searches are not this easy but we at TheRingFinders know how to conduct a proper search using the most efficient metal detecting equipment. 

John and his wife were able to catch their flight home with his wedding ring on his finger.

… Kristen had taken her afternoon walk with her children and their dog. They were at a neighborhood park when she went to adjust her small stud style earring. The dog got a little excited pulling on her hand that held the earring and it went flying into the grass. 

Several of her neighbors attempted to find the stud earring. They even had a metal detector which couldn’t find her favorite piece of jewelry.

The next day, one of Kristen’s friends suggested that she go online to call a ring finder. That was how she found me. I met her a couple hours after our phone conversation.

Kristen had the matching earring which helped me set up my metal detector. We walked a couple blocks to the park where she showed me a small area in the grass, 10’ x 20’. She couldn’t stay which wasn’t necessary because I had all the information I needed.

I decided to use my high frequency settings on my metal detector. The search site was fairly free of metal trash signals which helped to make it a quick recovery. Also,  the earring was .925 silver making it an easier target to identify. 

After getting the signal I was looking for, I took a look into the grass and the only thing visible was the thin post. It seems to be normal for these stud earrings to fall with the heavier end downward. 

It was a good feeling to recover this because these small earrings are always a challenge. Kristen was very happy to get this back. It had special sentimental meaning to her.

****  Tyler and Trinity had spent the afternoon at The Wedge on he Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach, CA.  Just before the end of their stay, Trinity lost an heirloom gold ring that had been worn for years by her mother.

Tyler just told me that she had lost the ring in the sand while throwing a ball. He called me at 8:30pm. I told him, if they could stay at the location for another half hour we had a very good chance to recover the ring. He agreed to mark the location and wait till I could meet them.

When I walked out on the beach near one of the lifeguard towers they were not on the beach, so I called his cellphone. Trinity and Tyler had decided to wait in their car as it was windy and cold. Tyler walked out to show me the general location. Trinity stayed in the car and he told me she was very emotional believing the ring was lost forever. It was very sentimental to her because her mother had recently passed away. 

We got to a blanket that marked where Trinity had been standing when the loss occurred. I took the time to explain to Tyler how the metal detector works as I began a grid search. Within the first eight feet I got a great signal thinking it could be a bottle cap. After shaking the sand out of my scoop, I was surprised to see a yellow gold ring at the bottom. It was a 18k gold Cartier Love Ring. This was Trinity’s ring. It was another quick recovery because Trinity and Tyler were able contact me shortly after losing the ring. Also they stayed in the area to get me to the general area. The metal detector did the rest of the job. It was a privilege to be available help this couple find such a sentimental keepsake.

How to Find a Ring Lost in a Construction Site Using a Metal Detector .. Rancho Cucamonga CA.

*** Shaun had walked out of his house in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. when the  strong wind blew his hat of his head. He instinctively threw his hands up to catch his hat. That’s when his wedding ring flew off his finger. 

After a couple days of searching his yard that was in the process of a landscaping project he decided he needed help. Shaun had did a little research and was able to get a recommendation to call a member of TheRingFinders. His first question to me was, to ask if I could come 60 miles to do a search in his yard. Not a problem for me. It was only a little more than an hour drive.

When I met Shaun he showed me where he had been standing when he threw hands up to catch his hat. Directly in front of him was the sidewalk with short artificial turf between the sidewalk and curb. All that area did not have any place that could hide a ring, although wedding bands have been known to hit hard surfaces rolling quite a distance.

After doing a simple visual search of the sidewalk and street. I began an search the construction area where there was a block wall being built. It was difficult to walk over the slight slope covered with good size rocks. After about an hour into the search, I got a good signal from my metal detector. Up against the bock wall hiding in the shade of a medium size rock was Shaun’s ring. I called him over to look at the location it was found. He told me that he was sure he would have never found the ring without my help. I know it was hard to know what direction or how far the ring had gone because the loss happened so fast. Once the construction workers returned to finish the work, I’m sure the ring would have been buried or removed with the excess dirt and rocks.

Most important is Shaun has his ring back where it belongs. It was also nice to see the happiness and grateful response he showed me. I love doing ring recoveries.

Two Rings Lost in a City Park Lake in Irvine, CA. … Recovered and Returned

*** Roz and Nema were sitting on a bench next to a local city lake in Irvine, CA.. She took two rings off her finger placing them on her lap while applying hand sanitizer. Forgetting that her rings were on her lap, she stood up and both rings fell into the lake.

A neighbor saw they needed help, volunteering to use his pool cleaning scoop to hopefully find the rings. The water depth varied from 3ft. to 4ft. with zero visibility. As he was attempting to find the rings, another neighbor told the distressed couple about TheRingFinders.com. She actually called me with her phone, handing it off to Roz. 

Roz told me about the loss while I was just leaving another search. I had my water detector with me, so I was able to drive directly to their location. We only had about an hour of daylight left. Right away I got into the water and after pulling out many trash targets, the promise ring was found. They were amazed and happy to have this ring back. 

It was dark so I decided to return the next day, even though they said it wasn’t necessary. They were very happy to have the promise ring recovered.

As a ring finder, I couldn’t give up so easy. Especially when we know the rings were lost directly in that location. It was less than ten miles from were I live. 

I returned the next morning with my wetsuit and a 6” coil set up on my detector. My plan was to dig everything,  as we weren’t sure what type metal the ring is. Roz thought it might be gold plated. After another hour in the water there was a high tone signal that gave me a #30 ID reading. It could be a quarter coin, aluminum or something silver. I scooped at the signal then looked into the scoop. “Bingo” gold colored ring with a big yellow stone. (Roz’s Ring). When I checked the ID reading out of ether water, it gave me a number #15. It was in the undercut of the embankment 4 ft. deep probably being masked by a piece of aluminum (?). I only regret that I didn’t find out what metal was masking the signal. Every search is a chance to gain more experience and I believe I’ve been on more than a thousand searches.

The rings are both back where they belong. This story of how the rings were lost and recovered will always be part of the Roz and Nema’s memories. I love being able to help people.

Lost 22k Gold Chain with Pendant on Crowded Beach … Newport Beach, CA. .. Found after a Day in the Sand

*** Bob called me after he spent the morning looking for his 22k gold chain with a gold / diamond pendant. He is a local resident of Newport Beach and had spent the afternoon on the beach. He wrapped his gold necklace in his shirt while he took a quick swim in the ocean. While laying in bed that night he realized that his necklace was missing. It had to be somewhere on the beach.

His attempt to see if it had been turned into the Newport Beach lifeguard lost and found was not successful. After he contacted me, we met on the beach where he was able give me a good location to search. I happy to see the beach sifting machine had not worked the towel line that day. 

I began to grid search the towel line before people began to sit in the search zone. I started to worry that the necklace could have been picked up by a passerby, as the chain could have been particularly exposed. Then there is always a possibility that a recreational detectorist could have found it. Many of these people would return an item like this if they had a way to contact the owner. That is not always easy to do. 

Before beginning the search Bob told me that he had worked in India and this was a gift he bought himself to remember his time there. The pendant is called Ganesha which is well known in the culture of India. He told me that of all his jewelry, he’d rather lose his Rolex than this sentimental keepsake.

He did mention that if we couldn’t find it, he was ready to accept that the loss was meant to be. I don’t run into that attitude very often. Well, a half hour later I got a very low tone with a one digits TDI number on my Equinox 800 detector. I wasn’t really expecting anything decent when I scooped the signal, but there in the bottom of my scoop was a beautiful 22k chai and pendant. In the sunshine the color is awesome and it feels so smooth, almost soft.

Bob was sitting patiently in his beach chair 30 or 40 ft. He noticed me stop then he could see the some of the chain trying to slip out of the holes in my scoop. He came running over to me in a calm but excited manner. He was so happy to have his prize possession back.  He did say again he knows it’s material item and he was willing to accept its loss if it was meant to be. I was grateful to be a part of helping Bob find his necklace and pendant.

Buried Rental Car Key Fob Recovered from Sand at Huntington Beach, CA. with Metal Detector

****  I was contacted by Hoa about helping him find rental car keys that he buried in the sand at Huntington Beach, CA. He had locked his wallet and his cellphone in the car which made it difficult to get any help. A stranger was able to help Hoa call me. 

It took me a half hour to meet Hoa on the beach. From past experience I knew we had to set up a meeting place as he didn’t have a phone. It was dark but we he was waiting next to lifeguard tower #2. Also it was nice to have that location illuminated by lights on the pier.

Even though he was unsure of the general area, because he was confused as the tide had risen several feet. I knew we could find the keys because we had two hours till the beach was closed. I figure an hour to grid search a basketball court size area. It just might take a little extra time than keys lost near a beach chair.

The rental car key fob showed up about 40 minutes after starting. It was a strong signal about 8” deep. The incoming tide had just began to wet the sand. Anyway Hoa was a happy man, he was going to be driving back to San Francisco later that same night. 

Sometimes key searches can be difficult. I try to always take call outs for lost keys, except when someone tells me that they had lost keys while walking or jogging several miles.

Lost Platinum Wedding Band in Backyard .. Whittier, CA. .. Recovered after Searching Two Weeks

*** Sergio spent two weeks searching his backyard lawn for his platinum wedding band. It was lost while he was cleaning his barbecue equipment on the lawn. 

I met Sergio at his home in Whittier, CA. the next morning after he called me. After walking into the back yard, he showed me where he had taken his ring off, setting it on a work table. Later his son came out to help his dad clean up. Sergio asked him to  spray off the barbecue grates, etc. which were on the same table as his ring.

Later that night Sergio realized that he didn’t have his ring on. Remembering that it was on the work table, he knew it must be in lawn. Using a flashlight in the dark the ring was not found that night. A couple days later he tried using a metal detector which was also unsuccessful. His last attempt was to pull all the grass from a 20 ft. x 20ft. area. After all that, he called me.

I grid searched the whole lawn several times with out getting a decent signal. Then used my detector to scan 4 bags of clumps of grass that had been pulled from the lawn. 

We had another talk about what other items may have been in the work area. As it could be possible the ring may have fallen into, then moved somewhere on the cement patio. Also the possibility the ring could have may have landed on the cement, rolling under or into another item on the patio. 

As a last resort we began a visual search. Boom! the ring was sitting in plain site on a shelf of one of three barbecues. It was 40ft. away from the location were Sergio had believed the loss occurred. The ring had been sitting there for two weeks, long enough to gather a ring of dust on the shelf where it had laid waiting to be found.

Sergio said he was surprised where the ring was found and couldn’t understand how it ended up in that spot. Nothing surprises me anymore about where these rings are found.

I dropped a ring in my kitchen, heard it hit the floor. Two weeks later I found it in my slippers which I had moved to the bedroom. I’m supposed to be a ring finder, two weeks?

Wife Loses Husband’s Hierloom Gold Diamond Ring in City Lake .. Lawndale, CA. .. Los Angeles County

*** Memo called me, telling me his wife was upset because she had lost a ring in a city lake while feeding ducks. I assumed she had lost her ring but she had actually lost an hierloom ring that was Memo’s. A ring that had belonged to his father that was given to him by his late father.

The day of the loss, Joanna had taken the ring to have it cleaned. On her way home she stopped by the city park lake to feed the ducks. She was wearing the ring on her finger because she thought it was safest place to keep it. As she was feeding the ducks she felt the ring slip off her finger and heard it splash in the lake.

That night Memo returned to the lake with a flashlight spending a couple hours hoping he could recover the ring. The next day he had  a guy with a metal detector search the area without success.

I met Memo and Joanna the third day after the loss of his very sentimental ring. They were upset and losing hope of ever finding this ring. It was helpful to have Joanna there to show me the place she had been standing and how she was gently tossing bread crumbs with a underhand motion.

The lake has a cement bottom without metal rebar which was a good thing. On the other hand the cement bottom made it difficult to retrieve flat metal objects, like coins and pull tabs. I started by dragging a high power magnet through the 20’x 40ft area to remove all the ferrous metals. This lake is more than 50 years old and was surprisingly clean of trash except for many coins. 

I was able to get out to shoulder deep water using a 6” coil which is more efficient in areas with many metal objects which can mask a ring. My plan was to clear this zone before having to dawn my Nemo surface air supply for searching deeper water.

I started off using discriminating modes of my detector. Then I went to all metal mode to remove any signals that can interfere with the detection of the ring. It was a tedious search and time consuming, yielding more than 50 coins.

After more than three hours of searching the relatively small area. Joanna and Memo had been patiently standing by waiting and I’m sure they were losing hope that the ring would be found. They even asked me if I thought the ducks could have eaten the ring. 

Joanna was going to get us some coffee. Just after I told her what I would like. I took one more scoop to retrieve a signal and BOOM!! .. Big Gold and Diamond ring in the scoop.

Right away I told Memo to stop Joanna. I was finished searching. He looked confused why I said that. He said, why? That’s when I held out the scoop saying, because I found your ring.

It was a great reunion of this so sentimental ring. After three days of searching and looking at a real possibility of not finding the ring. Within seconds everything turned into a joyful moment for everyone, including myself.

What an awesome couple and a special pleasure to be able to help Memo and Joanna. A moment to remember forever.!!

Huntington Beach Volleyball Player Lost Sentimental Military ID Tag in Sand .. Called The Ring Finders Directory for Help

*** Leor had lost a military dog tag while playing volleyball at Huntington State Beach. It had belonged his father and he wears it everyday. It was very sentimental to him. Leor had noticed his broken chain before leaving the sand volleyball court. He and his friends search by hand without finding it.

Leor was driving home to San Diego when he called me. We discussed the circumstances of the loss which gave me hope that I could find the metal ID tag. There are about 20 volleyball courts in this area of the beach. He told me it had to be a court number 15. 

I was able to get to the beach soon after the call. It wasn’t necessary to have Leor at the site. When I arrived there were a group of 10 or 12 players practicing on that court and I didn’t want to ask them to let me search. When they finished I began to grid the court. Then I was informed they were not finished playing. I courteously came off the court. While waiting for another shot at the sandy court, I search to sideline areas around the boundaries. Eight feet outside the court on the opposite side where Leor had felt the loss occurred, I found the missing SS metal military ID tag. I was basically using up time waiting to get back to the search zone. It was definitely a surprise to me but we do know how many recoveries happen when we search outside the box.

Leor was more than excited when I called him with the good news. He arranged for his friend, Ben to pick up this ID tag. Ben did tell me how much this item means to Leor. This is what makes my day.
