*** I love it when a friend or relative calls me asking for help to find their friend’s lost sentimental item. It happens more than I ever expected. Christine’s mother called me asking for help to find her daughter’s Cartier watch that could be in the sand near a volleyball court. She told me that her daughter had been watching a volleyball game on the sand at Newport Beach, CA.

The loss happened three days before calling me and her daughter didn’t realize the ring was missing until later that evening. This watch was very sentimental to her and she was devastated. Considering the length of time since the loss and how many other places she had been before discovering the watch was lost, I told her mother I could grid search the beach area. At least, when I finish, I could say it was not there. Although, I did think there was a strong possibility the watch could be there, I did not want to give them false hope.

There was no need for them to meet me at the location, because they gave me good directions and provided me with a few photos. After an hour of grid searching, I found the watch. I called them and sent a photo of the watch. We met that afternoon to give it to her mother, who had not told Christine. She was going to surprise Christine that evening.

*** Sara is visiting Newport Beach from Idaho. Her friend was getting married and she wanted to see the ocean while being here in Southern California. The group of friends walked out to get a view of the Pacific Ocean, she stood on the upper sand watching the waves. She threw her hands in the air and her gold ring went flying. As the ring hit the sand it disappeared immediately. It happened so fast she couldn’t determine what direction it went. She knew for sure that was when the ring was lost.  Many times people think when they notice the ring missing that could be where it was lost.

Sara and her friends were able to optain a loaner metal detector. This was not going well so one of her friends found my information online after a onlooker suggested getting a metal detecting specialist. After receiving the call I met them on the beach a couple miles from where I live. The tide was coming in but we had plenty of time before it would be a problem.

Setting up my grid pattern to go over the area they had already searched, I planned to go outside the zone they had believed the ring had traveled. Rings seem to come off at the end of a throw. Sometimes they come off straight down to the feet of the person that threw a ball, brushed of sand off their clothes, rings lost playing volleyball can end up in the craziest of places. This ring was actually found ten feet outside of where everyone thought it would be..All those that searched for the ring were totally surprised where the ring ended up. Nothing surprises me anymore. Sara was very grateful, this was a ring that was a family heirloom, irreplaceable.

***  Marie called me after realizing her heirloom gold and diamond ring was missing after doing some gardening. She had actually removed some of the overgrown ivy in a small town house planter. She was sure that the ring must be in the box of ivy leaves, but she could not find this ring that had been past down to her from her mother.

She found my service on line after trying to get an idea of how to search for a gold ring. I was able to meet her an hour after she talked to me. We could have done the search the next day, but I felt she didn’t need to worry about the loss any more time than necessary.

When Marie showed me the small box of ivy leaves, I past my small handheld metal detector over it without getting any metal signal. She looked very disappointed as she was positive the ring had to be there. I asked her a few questions and that’s when she told me she had originally put the ivy into a trash bag before transferring the trimmings in the box. The trash bag had just a small amount of top soil in the bottom. I quickly pasted my handheld pinpointer metal detector under the plastic trash bag and Boom !! It gave a great signal which turned out to be Marie’s missing ring. She was so happy that she didn’t give up and was able to find someone who could help her. She then told me that she had thrown two other containers of leaves in a big trash dumpster for the whole complex of townhouses.  After hearing the other possible areas of the loss, I was happy I didn’t have to go into that dumpster.
