Ed called me from his home in Rancho Cucamonga after losing his ring at a small beach cove in Laguna Beach, CA. He stumbled onto the TheRingFinders website while trying to seek information about renting a metal detector.

He told me that his wedding ring was in his beach chair and had fallen out as he left the beach. Now he was 60 miles away from the beach.

Knowing this beach very well and I was less than 8 miles away, I told him it would be unnecessary for him to meet me at the location. Such a small beach, I could be there and grid search the whole area in less than an hour.

It was already dark when I arrived. I went directly to where Ed described he had been earlier that day. A few bottle caps and pull tabs then, BOOM, ED’s Tungsten Wedding Ring in the scoop. I sent a photo of his ring and he was able to pick the ring up at my place before 10 pm.  I love being able to have the time and the equipment to help people like Ed find such sentimental irreplaceable items like wedding rings.

…. Mark was attending a company beach party at Dockwieler State Beach with more than 25 coworkers. They had a friendly volleyball competition where Mark’s gold wedding band flew off his finger. He immediately knew when it came off and it went directly into the sand.

For the next few hours several of his colleagues tried to find the ring in the sand. Mark did realize that he would have a better chance to find his wedding ring, if he rented a metal detector. Little did he know, this beach is a highly mineralized sand. Most metal detectorists avoid this area like the plaque.

Mark could not find a place to rent a metal detector but he did find my contact information on a google search. After hearing his story, I was able to make sure he could be there when I got to beach.

The party was still in progress when I arrived. Everyone was excited to see me find the ring that they had attempted to find. Mark showed me where he was standing as he took a powerful swing at the volleyball. There was a lot of frustrating small signals but I was sure the gold ring would be much stronger. After a doing three cross grids two hours had passed. It was dark and all the people had gone home.

Just Mark and I were the only persons on the beach. This simple search was beginning to look like a “no find”.  As a last resort,  I went 90 degrees from the spot where Mark hit the ball approximately 40 feet outside the right side boundary lines.  My thoughts were if this was unsuccessful,  I would have to go back to my car to get a different detector that might be more efficient in this highly trashy/ mineralized sand. THEN ! Boom, a great signal there in my scoop was Mark’s wedding ring. I found the ring on the first couple passes outside the area where the ring was most unlikely to be.  I did waist some time going over the primary search location three times. Only because it was unstable with a lot of false signals.  We often say, “Don’t Forget To Search Outside the Box.” Lately I have more respect for rings recoveries in volleyball courts. Rings lost playing volleyball can go a lot further and in unpredictable directions.. This was certainly a good example of searching outside the box.

Clem and Denise has been on the beach Saturday night when Denise lost her new IPhone X and an expensive pair of prescription glasses. Clem called me Sunday morning asking for help using my metal detector.

This beach has a very efficient beach cleaning crew, so I was a little concerned that it may be too late.  They are are aware that the beaches are groomed daily. When I discussed that with Clem, he told me that the beach had only raked the upper part of the beach. He also told me that the “Find My Iphone App” was still pinging, which meant the phone was still there.

That information was good enough for me to get on the road to meet them on the beach. When I got there, Clem had a IPad that gave information the phone was still in the location. He didn’t understand how the app worked, so I told him to walk in the direction of of the blinking icon until his position was over the spot the gps indicated the area of the phone.

It still took about 20 minutes to find the phone. As a bonus the prescription glasses also showed up. What made this a great recovery was, these large items actually survived the beach rake. Some days the beach crew only rakes the beach and if the rake is not full of trash some items just fall through. Other days the crews run a super sifting machines that can get bottle caps, coins and rings. Every beach city has different schedules and cleaning procedures.

Denise was ecstatic and happy that her friend Clem had the presence of mind to call me for help. It was definitely a pleasure to help them, I was having second thoughts about searching for a cell phone lost in a high traffic beach goer location. The large phones don’t always hide under the sand.

*** Heather and Justin were at Huntington Beach, CA. for the day with their young daughter. As Heather was packing up their things her platinum diamond wedding rings slipped of her finger falling into the dry sand.

She and Justin couldn’t find the rings and it was getting late with the chilling wind also frustrating them. Heather called me asking if I was available to help them. Just as I was getting directions to their location. Heather said, “Oh! my husband just found the engagement ring. I will call you back in 20 minutes.”

It was a short phone conversation but I did know what lifeguard tower they were near and that the rings were lost in dry sand. I was sure that they were not going to be able to find the smaller ring with their fingers. I was out doing errands and didn’t want to drive home to wait for a phone call. It was closer to go to the location that Heather gave me. Surely, I would be getting another phone call.

Arriving at the upper parking area at Huntington Beach, I could only see one family walking off the beach pulling a wagon. Heather had not returned a call possibly they had found the other ring and left the beach? I decided to walk down to the beach to do some recreational detecting. That’s what I do most everyday.

Walking down the steps with my detector, I met the couple coming off the beach. The guy pulling the wagon looked straight at me then asked me if I could help them find a wedding ring. I told him,  that’s why I’m here. I am the guy your wife called about an hour ago. Right away Heather started apologizing for not returning the call she promised me.

We followed the wagon tire tracks back to the place on the beach where the loss occurred. Location and timing made it easy to find the platinum diamond wedding ring with a professional type metal detector. We had Heather’s irreplaceable original wedding band back where it belongs , the one that was put on her finger the day she and Justin got married.

It’s a shame that people walk away from lost keepsakes that can be found by a RingFinder. I can’t tell you how many times I been told, “I Didn’t Know This Service Existed”.. This time my experience with past searches that I would be needed to help find the elusive small ring. It hard to explain, I just had a gut feeling that I should go to the location even though I had not got a return phone call.

How to Find a Gold Ring Lost in a Grass Field … Dana Point, CA… Using a Metal Detector

***  Jim called me after finding my contact information at TheRingFinders.com metal detecting specialists directory. He had lost a large gold ring that was past down to him by his father. The loss happened earlier in the afternoon while playing a friendly game of football on a grass field in Dana Point, CA.  Jim didn’t feel the ring come off his finger, but he did notice it missing just after the football game.

He and his friends spent several hours searching the 50 x 30 yard grass field. He went to a local sporting goods store purchasing a metal detector that just frustrated him trying to use with so much metal trash in the old park.  It was already dark before he called me, but I agreed to meet him to see the location. The most important factor of most searches is to get the best idea of where the loss happened. It was so late that this search might have to be done the next day when it was daylight. Some public parks have 10pm closing hours.

It was already 9pm before I could begin the search. Jim had been at the park for over ten hours. He said he couldn’t leave knowing the heirloom ring that his dad had given him was in that field. It meant the world to him.

After choosing to start at the most likely end of the grass field, where there was a little lightning, progress was a little slow because of many trash targets. Two hours later, I was getting close to the end of the search zone. I was getting tired and had resorted to only checking the strong signals. It was looking like this search would have to continue tomorrow. It was possible that my grid lines were not straight, the ring could have missed.

Then I got a strong double signal as my coil passed over a larger non ferrous object. With my high power search light I could see the gold ring in deep grass. I asked Jim to come over to answer a question about where he thought the ring could be. Then I asked him to look down. He blew up with an emotional reaction that is hard to describe. This ring that his father had give him was so important he was willing to do what ever it took to find it.  It took two hours to find finishing at 11pm. Persistence pays off again!

**** Chris and Laura are from Georgia, they had just finished a road trip down the coast of California. Spending  the last day of their trip by enjoying the ocean sitting on the sand at Newport Beach, CA. Their day was upset by the loss of Laura’s platinum with diamonds wedding ring set.

When I received the call I had just finished another ring recovery 20 miles away. They were staying at a hotel very close to the location where they believed the loss occurred. So it helped that they could be there to guide me to the general area.

We began the search just as the sun was setting. They believed the rings were lost about 3pm that afternoon. My concern was they had set up their beach chairs on the wet sand. The rings would not have been buried as easily as if had been soft sand. After three or four hours with many people on the beach, someone could have visually found them..

After triple cross gridding and expanding the search area it was dark. I was running out of places to search. Both Chris and Laura were ready to give up. I told them I could not leave with good conscious until I did a couple passes on the upper soft sand. Half way into my second pass I got a strong signal, dug into the sand with my scoop. It was dark so I reached into the sand that was in my scoop and felt a large diamond ring. I knew it had to be one of the rings I was looking for.

I held the ring up for Chris and Laura to see but they didn’t realize I had found their ring. They still had the sad look , that the rings were lost forever. Then I said out loud, I found the big ring. (2.67ct. Diamond/ platinum ring). It was a priceless moment, I can’t explain with words.

I took a few seconds more to swing the detector over the same area hoping to get the wedding band, no signal. Then I had second thought, I reached into my scoop and there was the wedding band lying flat in the bottom of the scoop. I had dug both at the same time. They had not remembered that they first set on the upper beach for a couple minutes before moving to the wet sand location.

A very happy couple that could finish their special vacation with a happy ending. It was a special search with emotions up and down. It was a pleasure to meet and help both Laura and Chris.

****  Julie called asking if I would help find her husband’s wedding ring.. She and her husband, BJ had spent the day at Riviera Beach in San Clemente, CA. The whole family enjoyed the day on the beach and upon returning home BJ realized his ring was missing. He had placed it in the pocket of his beach chair earlier that day;

I only asked if someone could meet me at the location. We had a very good chance of finding the ring as it had only been missing about two hours. BJ met me on the beach about an hour after the first phone call.

Most the beach was clear of people which was a good thing. We walked to the general area where BJ had a little trouble finding the exact place they had set up their day camp. Then he recognized some grapes in the sand that the kids had not eaten. Now we were in the zone. A couple minutes later I had BJ’s ring in the scoop. Another ring saved by TheRingFinders and a very happy guy that figured the ring was lost forever. Thanks to his wife, Julie for getting on the internet to find a RingFinder to recover the ring.

Petite Gold Bracelet Lost in Grass Lawn .. Costa Mesa,CA. .. Found with High Frequency Metal Detector

**** It was a hot summer day when Hailey’s neighbor set up some sprinklers with water slides in their front lawn. All the neighborhood kids including Hailey’s daughter had fun playing in the water most the afternoon. Later that evening Hailey discovered that her favorite gold bracelet was missing. She knew it was on her arm that morning. Possibly, it could have fallen off on the lawn while playing with the kids.

She wasn’t quite sure where the loss occurred. So after frantically searching everywhere she had been that day, she thought maybe the very small gold bracelet may be in her neighbor’s lawn. While trying to rent a metal detector detector she found my contact information on line.

I was able to meet her that same morning. Where she showed me a similar type gold necklace. It was very fine links which I could only get a faint signal with my high frequency coil on my XP Deus metal detector. The first and most probable area did not yield the bracelet. Hailey looked a little disappointed as I exhausted the first area and then suggested the spot where the plastic kids pool was set up.

I had been thinking about switching out to one of my other detectors before calling it a “No Find”.  Another time just as I was running out of places to search I got a decent signal. Dropping to my knees to spread the grass apart, I could barely see the small 18k gold chain bracelet.

Successful search with Hailey totally surprised and happy that she called a member of TheRingFinders for help, even though she wasn’t positive that where she had lost her precious bracelet she would feel better if she had the grass searched by someone that knew how to use a metal detector.  This was the type of jewelry that could be a problem for any other type metal detector to find.

***Received a call at 8pm asking for help finding a ring lost in the dry sand at Santa Monica Beach, CA. Dave’s father called me after his son and his friends spent half the afternoon searching for Dave’s gold wedding ring had come off his finger while throwing a football.

It was already dark and most the public parking lots are closed after sunset. We were lucky that they have private parking area in front of their beach house. We were still dealing with the public beach morning cleaning crews, so I set up to meet them a 9pm. If they were available to walk me out to the general area of the loss it could be an easy search. It would not be wise to wait for the next morning.

It was perfect to park so close to the location of the loss. If the private parking wasn’t available the next best option would require a long walk.

Dave walked with me out to the main beach and it didn’t take long to find his wedding ring. He was very relieved to have his ring back where it belongs. Also, as most these quick searches go. He was amazed at how easy it seemed to be using a metal detector. I took a few minutes to explain that not all metal detectors work well in salt/ mineralized sand and metal detectors take time to learn how to use them. It’s always best to get a person that has experience using a metal detector.

*** Greg had lost his gold wedding ring a Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA., while throwing a frisbee on the beach. He called asking for help and we discussed what happened and what area of the beach the loss occurred.

It was a weekend day with many people on the dry sand. We were lucky that he was on the backside of the beach where we wouldn’t be hampered with people laying in the zone. He also had put a marker on the sand where he felt the ring come off his finger. I love this type of call our odds of finding the ring are really good.

Parking was not a problem this time, sometimes it takes longer to find parking than to drive to the beach. We met on the beach shortly after his call. It could have been a quick recovery if I started at the right side of the search area. The ring did show up at the edge of their other side location Greg laid out for me.. Metal Detector is the right tool to find a ring if it’s not a used by an experienced metal detector expert. It does help if the person who lost the ring knows that the ring actually came off in the general location.

It was another great moment to see how happy and grateful Greg was when we found the ring. I say we, because Greg was a big part of this being a successful recovery. He marked the location, he called TheRingFinders directory, and was able to stay to help give me get near the spot.
