iPhone 6 Lost at Redondo Beach, CA…Found.

I received a call from Joseph this morning about an iPhone 6 that he lost yesterday at the beach. I went through my litany of questions to find out how the phone was lost in order to make the recovery quicker. It was then Joseph told me he checked the Find My iPhone app this morning, and it showed the phone near the pier. This has been the second iPhone 6 in about 4 weeks, both using the find app, so I thought it would be quick and painless.

We got to the spot and he showed me the general area. It was not real small, but manageable, I figured it would not take a great amount of time. I gridded the area, with nothing, I then went outside of the area, supposing it might have been thrown in a way he was not sure of, still with no luck. After about 3 hours, I asked if he would show me the find app, so I could judge where the phone was, when he told me he did not have the capability at the beach, but had to go home to access it. There were more and more people arriving at the beach, which was making the hunt more difficult, so I told him I would go home until about 6 or 7 this evening, and come back to search. Before I came back though, I wanted him to check the find app to make sure the phone was still there, which he agreed to do.

About 5 this evening I received a text message with a picture from Joseph, and it was showing the phone on the beach, but when I looked at the picture, it was no where near where I had been searching. It was then that I noticed, it was at the County beach cleaning site, and the app was showing the phone where the County dumps all the trash it picks up off of the beach. It must have been caught by the beach cleaning machines sometime after they had first checked the app this morning. I went to the site, and looked at piles of garbage bags, and a pile of seaweed mixed with all kinds of beach trash. I figured the phone would not be in the bags, because someone would have had to pick it up and put it in one of them, so I exempted the bags from the search. I then focused on the seaweed pile using my AT Pro with small coil to find the metal, and using gloves, started working through the mess. Within about 10 minutes I found the phone, and although it had been damaged by the beach cleaning machine, it was still functioning.

Joseph and I met at the first spot, at about 10:30 PM, so I could return the phone, and it was a happy ending to a long day.

Confirmation Medallion Lost at Torrance Beach, CA…Found.

On my way out to a ring search in Newport Beach last Sunday night, I received a call from Maya who told me about a St. Michael medallion she lost at the beach, and asked if I would try to find it for her. I let her know that I was on my way to help someone else at the time, but told her that after I was finished, I would go to the beach she lost the medallion at, and do a search. She did give me very specific directions, and I felt comfortable going because I know the area well. There was a sense of desperation in her voice, so I knew it was important to her that this item be found. I also knew that this beach is cleaned very well on a daily basis by the county, so there was no time like the present to do the search.

I successfully finished the search for the ring and headed to the other beach in Torrance which was about 30 miles away. When I got there it was about 11:30 PM, and I got my gear and began my search. I searched for about half an hour, searching out the box she had laid out for me over the phone, and found the medallion. I sent her a text immediately giving her the good news, and received one back about 4:30 AM from a very thankful young lady. We arranged to meet at the location of the loss today, and her father came along as well. I was glad he did when I asked about the significance of the medallion. He explained that this medallion was given to him when he was 12 years old at his Confirmation, and he had kept it since then. This piece of jewelry is over 40 years in the family. He then gave it to his daughter at her Confirmation. It was at this point that I realized the huge importance of returning this to the family. The story of this St. Michael medallion needed to continue, and it has; I am so happy to be part in it. Great smiles on father and daughter.

Wedding Ring Lost at Hermosa Beach…Found.

This was a unique ring find for me today. I received a call from a gentleman this afternoon stating he had lost a wedding ring at the beach. I told him I could be there in 30 minutes, so I prepared to go. When I got to the area, which was near the pier, near the restaurants, it was close to 5 o’clock. I was not able to find parking because of Valentine’s Day couples going out to eat, so I continued looking, and finally was able to secure a spot about a mile away.

I got to the area of the loss and met the gentleman and his wife, and they explained to me what had happened, how he had put his wife’s ring in his shorts pocket which was on the towel. Apparently a bee stung his wife, and he tried to flick it with his shorts not realizing he had thrown the ring in the process. When he searched for the ring, he then realized the mistake he had made. I began my search, down once, back once, and then the sound I was looking for. I pulled the ring out of my scoop, and was immediately surrounded by loving arms in one great big group hug. It was then that they told me they had only been married 5 days, at which time my jaw dropped, and a big WOW came out.

I thought I got to get some pictures. This is a striking couple, and camera ready, if you know what I mean, and at that time they asked if I would not take any pictures of them or the ring. They told me that their parents, family or friends did not know they were married, and it was explained that there was some cultural ramifications involved. It was then I figured I had been a part of a Romeo and Juliette story steeped in anonymity. So sorry no pictures, but I will say that there were big smiles, and much joy on the beach this evening.

Lost Keys at Malibu Creek State Park…Found.

I received a call from Pat this morning worried because she had lost her keys the day before. I agreed to meet her at the location, which would take me a couple of hours to get to. When I arrived Pat showed me the area, and it was covered with tall grass and weeds grown from recent rain storms. She told me that the bundle of keys was large, so I figured the hunt would be pretty simple. Also she was worried because some of the keys would be very hard to replace. Her car key was also with this bundle, so the likelihood of them being lost in this location was great because she had them when she arrived, but when she got back to her car she could not get in.

I proceeded to hunt in the tall grass, and worked the area slowly and surely. I covered the area completely, and then went out of the box. I then started looking in areas that might not have been a possibility, but still with no luck. It was a warm day here in So. Cal. (about 85 where I was hunting), so I went back to the truck to get a drink of water and regroup. I then went over the first area again with no luck. I knew from what Pat had told me, those keys had to be there, so I had to press on. At this point I decided to switch detectors, and went to a 6 inch coil, and then proceeded to begin the whole search again. I got to the mid way point when I got a confirming signal. I put in my pin pointer, and found Pat’s keys in weeds that really were not too high, but had wide leaves which were able to hide her keys quite well.

Pat had gone off walking her dogs when I found her keys, and was walking back as I was getting back to the car. At this time I raised my hand with her keys dangling, and could see relief appear on her face. It was a pleasure to be able to help Pat today, and to know I was a part of the joy she experienced.

Lost Wedding Ring in Back Yard Northridge, CA…Found.

I received a call from Christian yesterday in the evening after he and his wife had searched for his wedding ring, lost in their back yard. I arranged to meet him today, knowing the ring was not going anywhere, being that it was his yard, which took away the immediacy of the search. Christian had been in the yard with his children, and their newly acquired rescue dog. The dog had a habit of jumping up on people, and while they were in the yard he began to jump on his children. Christian then tried to get the very powerful dog to stop. He put his hand down to push him away from his children, and the dog moved in such a way that his movement caused Christian’s ring to pop off of his hand and into the grass. He saw the direction of where the ring landed, and they searched. The problem was that there was a good thatch in the grass which made it thick, and it swallowed the ring as soon as it hit. I got to the site, and got to searching. It took a couple of passes beginning a grid to insure that the whole area would be covered, and the ring was found very close to where Christian had thought it would be. He had told me how he and his wife had gotten very emotional over the ring’s loss, so it was a great pleasure to see his joy returned when I handed his ring back to him. When I watched Christian put his ring back on, I wondered how this encounter with his dog could have made this possible, because it seemed to be very tight on his finger. I then got to meet the culprit in this loss, a sixty pound, solid muscled pit bull terrier with a sweet disposition and a lot of energy, and was glad I did not wear my ring when I pet him. I am glad to have been able to sweeten this family’s Christmas this year.

Ring Lost in Yard in Brentwood Los Angeles, CA…Found.

I received a call today from Chris, who told me that his wife had been doing some yard work and lost her ring the day before. Being available to go and search for them, I got my equipment together, and was on my way. When I got to their house, and was shown the area, I could see some possible problems like power lines close to the property (to cause electrical interference), and a very tight sprinkler system. I had brought a detector that could find a good frequency, and I also switched to a 6 inch coil and lowered my sensitivity because it was a fresh drop; these changes made the hunt for the ring a lot easier. Chris showed me the area, and explained how his wife had removed her ring in order to do some work in the yard, and put it in her pocket, but in the course of the work, she had bent over, and the ring came out, going into the grass. They had searched the area themselves, but were unable to locate the ring. They knew the general area, so I began my search. I made about 3 passes, albeit small ones with the 6 inch coil, but I made sure to work extra slow in order to be sure I covered the whole area. I had just passed over a sprinkler head when I heard that unmistakable low sound in the headphones. I then went to the grass with my pin pointer, and with a little moving of the grass, out pops this beautiful intertwined yellow gold and white gold diamond ring. It was such a pleasure to see the smiles on their faces. What a great day.

Keys Lost at Bolsa Chica State Beach, CA…Found.

I received a text from Gary today asking if I would be available to help him find his keys that were lost the night before at the beach. He had been out with friends enjoying the temperate weather, having a fire on the beach, and roasting S’mores when he noticed his keys were no longer in his pocket. These were keys that had a specific purpose, and would be hard to replace. Also there was a flash-drive attached that had personal information which he wanted to keep. I told Gary I would be able to meet him at the beach in a couple of hours, and he sent me the location. We met, and he showed me the area. I began my search, and realized the area was infested with foil, pull tabs, bottle caps, and a lot of iron in the form of screws, nails and bolts, with a few coins as well. The search was slow because of digging a lot of unwanted items, but in order to make sure I did not pass over the keys, I dug every hot hit. About 1 1/2 hours later I dug a quarter, and once I put it away, I passed my coil over the area again, and had another good hit. I put my scoop in, and found Gary’s key chain. Needless to say that he was thoroughly happy about having them back. Glad to have made his day! Gary was referred to my by Stan Ross (fellow Ring Finder).

Princess Cut Diamond Pendant Lost in a Park in El Segundo, CA…Found.

I happened to be out metal detecting when I received a call from Lynn. She told me how she had been playing a Wiffle Ball game with friends, and somehow the chain holding her princess cut diamond pendant broke, and she lost them both. She and her friends searched the deep thatched grass into the night, and were able to find the chain, but unable to find the pendant. They came back the next day to look some more, yet with no results. When I arrived, they showed me the area the chain had been found, and I could see that they had stripped the lawn in that area to the soil in about a 3 foot circle, rightfully thinking the pendant should be in the same area. That is where I began my search, but only found chopped up aluminum cans, and one dime, and one quarter. I asked more questions, and decided to search all of the area she had been when she knew she had the pendant on. Then an hour later, about 15 to 20 feet from the bare circle, I got the sweet tone of gold in my headphones. I was able to reunite Lynn with her lost pendant. From the emotion she showed when she saw her pendant, I could tell how much it meant to her to have it back. It was a very happy day today. It was great to see Lynn smiling, and to see her friends celebrating with her. Lynn was referred to me by James Borgen (fellow Ring Finder).

I wanted to say THANK YOU once again for helping me to find my pendant. After having spent over four hours myself (plus an additional 14 hours – if you count everyone who helped me to look), I had given up hope. I was beating myself up – how could I be so silly as to wear such a valuable piece to a Wiffle Ball game.. Why didn’t I have a better chain… I am sure you have heard many similar regrets in your line of work.

A friend of mine recommended the Ring Finders site and James Borgen, who I happened to call 1st from the list, recommended you! You had a calming and confident approach and I found myself believing that you just might pull it off. As I am sure you could tell by my reaction – I was overjoyed to have this future heirloom recovered. But more amazing still was your reaction. I could see your genuine joy in helping me find it. I would bet your dedication and enthusiasm is key to your success, evidenced by the number of stories and smiling faces I see in your blog.

Hi, my name is Steve Smith.

I am retired, which allows me to do a search at all hours of the day or night. I look forward to being a help to all who call.
