Electronic Mercedes Car Key Lost on the Beach in Long Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I had just gotten home from my ring search in Malibu (about 10:00 PM) when my phone rang. It was Laura, she had lost her electronic car key in the sand at the beach while exercising. She had done a lot of searching, but was unable to find it. She was still there, so I said I would come and see if it was where she thought it might be.

When I got there Laura walked me out explaining how it might have been here or there. I let her know that we had to narrow down the search area because the beach was very wide, and it was now about 10:45 PM, and to do a 3-4 hour search was looking kind of grim. Laura had already figured it out though, and said we need to look for “the stick”, it would put me in the right spot as close to where she had been when she thought she lost the key. At that point I was looking for any stick, and showed her a small one at which she said no it is a big stick. It wasn’t long before she exclaimed “there it is”. I looked and she was right, the stick was a piece of fencing that she had buried to mark the spot. I then began my grid working towards the stick getting a load of bottle caps. After about 30 minutes I started working in the other direction with nothing but more bottle caps. I then began another grid working back towards the strand when I found the key. I looked around (it was very dark on the beach), and Laura was gone. I thought, “she couldn’t have left”. I walked back to where we had first met when I finally saw her, she was on the phone with AAA to get a tow for the car. When she told me, she had arranged a tow, I held out the key and asked, “wouldn’t you rather drive it home”, at which point she came over and gave me a big hug. I was able to make her day, and I am sure she slept well last night. It was a great day.

Last night I received a call from Fred, he had lost his wedding ring while at the beach with his family. He put all of the belongings that he thought could be lost in his chair while he went in the water and played with his children. What happened though was that when they were packing to leave the beach for the day, he forgot about the ring when gathering up his belongings, and when he picked the chair up, the ring disappeared into the sand. When he called, even though it was getting late, and he had already gone home, I convinced Fred to meet me at the beach so he could guide me to the area, and help me to help him. It is so important in a public area such as a beach or park, to do the search right away so as to eliminate many of the factors that could make a search impossible. In these recovery’s, time is the enemy.

Fred beat me to the beach, and with the dwindling light and lack of crowds, it made easy to find him. He led me out to the area, and showed me what had happened, and in what direction they had left the beach, so I began my search. As I searched, I would stop when I had found a bottle cap, foil, or some other metal I would turn to show Fred in order to let him know that I had not found the ring during that dig, but it seemed he was in deep thought (or prayer) hoping for the ring’s return, that he did not notice my showing of the metal most of the time. I searched from the first area up to the exit of the sand with no ring. I then took off my shoes to go into the water in the incoming tide, and began my search in the wet sand planning to work into the water. I got a good signal and dug. It wasn’t in the first scoop, so I dug again, and this time the metal was in the scoop. I shook the sand out, and there was Fred’s ring, a big heavy platinum ring. My scoop is 14 inches long, and that ring had sunk at least that deep in the soft sand in just a few hours, helped by the water going over wave after wave. I held the ring up for Fred, and shined my head lamp on it so he could see what I was holding. I waited for him to realize what I was holding in my hand, and he came immediately over. He then took the ring, but I believe he had convinced himself it wouldn’t be found, and was trying hard to find the markings that would prove it his. When he finally realized the ring was his, he blew out a sigh of relief, which made it very evident that this ring meant a whole lot to him. He then informed me that he and his wife were going to celebrate their milestone 15th wedding anniversary next month. This was the ring his wife had given him on that celebrated day, and it held a great sentimental value for him, all of this exposed his huMANity. It was great to have been able to help him; a wonderful day.

Rose Gold Wedding Band Lost at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Richard called this evening. He had lost his wedding ring while at the beach with his family. He had taken the ring off and wrapped it in his shirt so it would not get lost while going in and around the water. The problem occurred when he went to get his shirt, forgetting the ring was inside. He unraveled his shirt while walking from where they had been sitting, and then realized the ring was missing. He searched but was unable to find the ring. I told him I would be happy to come and help.

When I got to the beach, Richard met me and took me to the area. He explained again what had happened, and in what direction he had been walking, so I had a good idea how I would grid the area. I worked all the area where he had been, and then began to move out. About 10 feet from where they had been sitting I got a good signal in the headphones, and scooped. As I shook out the sand, I could see the gleam of gold in the bottom; I knew I had found the ring. Richard was very happy. I was glad to have restored his joy, and know he will sleep well tonight!

Wedding Ring Lost in Grass in Santa Monica, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Monday afternoon Antwon called explaining how he had lost his wedding ring after having removed it from his finger for a couple of minutes. Apparently it is a bit tight, so for a little relief he figured he would remove it and then put it back on when his finger felt better. The problem was that after he removed the ring it dropped into a patch of very tall and thick grass. I let him know I was on my way.

When I got there Antwon informed me that he had been there for 3 hours looking for the ring. He showed me the area, and I knew this would be a quick search. I turned on the detector, took a few swings, got the signal, put the pin pointer in, and had the ring in hand. Antwon looked more relieved than happy, but I could see the joy restored. Then I asked how long he had been married, and he said 3 days, so I understood. Glad to have been able to make his day. I know he slept well that night!

Electronic Car Key Lost in Horse Arena in Griffith Park, Los Angele, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Kathrine called yesterday morning explaining how she had been working training horses at the Griffith park horse arena when she received a phone call. When she removed her phone for the call, unknowingly her electronic car key came out and fell into the soft sand of the arena. She had gone back with a rake later to try and recover the key, but with no luck. She was able to locate me on the internet, not really believing a service like this even existed. When I talked with her and asked a few questions, it did sound like a good chance of a recovery, so we arranged to meet at the arena as soon as I could get there.

I got to the park, I met with Kathrine, and she took me over to the arena. When I saw it, it was a very large expanse of sand, fine and deep like the beach. We tried to narrow down the search area. She showed me the approximate spot where she used the phone, so I decided to break up the arena into 4ths, and do a search for each quarter of it. After doing the first 4th with no results, and watching Kathrine doing a little searching on her own, I noticed she was sticking to the outside rail of the arena. I then found out that most of the training the day before had been on the outer perimeter rather than the internal part of the pen. I told her that I was going to change my search method, and search the outer portion first and spiral in as I made each pass. About 5 minutes later I received a good signal and dug, and there in the bottom of my scoop was her key. She was so surprised, and so happy to have her key back, it was the only one she had access to at this time and was dreading having to purchase another. What a wonderful smile, you bet! It was great to make Kathrine’s day yesterday.

Gold and Pearl Earring Lost in Children’s Playground in Pasadena, CA…Found and Joyously Returned.

I was contacted Saturday evening by Sue who had lost her earring at the park earlier in the day. She told me how her young boy had been overly energetic, and while fussing, hit her ear and caused the earring to dislodge and fall into the wood chips that made up the base of the playground. She said that she had searched as long as she could, but with the yellow gold and the color of the wood chips being so similar, it seemed an impossible task. She also told me how much these fine pieces of jewelry meant to her. She had just gotten her first paycheck from her first job after graduating college 20 years prior, and these earrings were one of the first things she purchased as a reward for her hard work. When Sue contacted me, I was getting dinner for my wife and I, so I let her know that if she gave me the information about the loss and directions to the park, I would meet her there to do a search after dinner. She told me that she was unable to go, but gave me the information anyway. I ate dinner, and left for the search.

When I got to the park it was already dark, so I got my headlight. I went over the pictures she had sent, and began my search. I searched all of the area that I saw in the pictures with no luck. Now an earring can be a very difficult item to search for because of the limited amount of metal, but with my detector I should have heard this one (A rental detector would not have found it). I went over the area again, pulled out the wood chips from under the play equipment, and searched all of that with no luck. I then went around the whole piece of equipment thinking it may have been knocked loose but fallen off somewhere else; no luck. I also searched a grassy area she had mentioned as a possibility, no luck there also. So I called her again, and went over the photographs she had sent, when with her help, I realized, I had misinterpreted the picture, and was conducting my search in the wrong place. It did not take more than 10 to 15 minutes to find both the earring and the back for it. I sent her a picture of her earring, and she called me back very excited.

Sue and I arranged to meet the next day, so I could return her symbol of hard work and precious memories. When she came over to me, and I held out her earring I could see a wave of emotion sweep over her. She was so very happy to have her earring back, and I was so very happy to see her joy restored. What a great end to a day!

An inspirational story to share on a Sunday…

On Saturday afternoon at my friend’s birthday party for her daughter, everyone including my son had a great time. We were at a park in Pasadena. It was perfect weather and my son was a powerhouse – non-stop on the slide, running around with no fear and 200% energy! He was having a wonderful time. But he kept coming back to the big slide which scared me because it was way too high, and he wanted to walk down, instead of sliding down! So when he tried to go the big slide again, I scooped him up and he struggled, hitting my face and neck. He hit my right ear so hard that the earring on my right ear flew out.

We looked for the earring for over an hour. But the play area had these chipped wood pieces as flooring. It was impossible to find. As my friend said, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack! Someone said, “Get a metal detector.” And I thought, where am I gonna find a metal detector? We left the party and I had a sinking feeling. I didn’t want to leave half of my earring in a place I may never come back to. That earring’s been with me for 20 years! But we had to go home. My son, was getting cranky and I didn’t want to drive on the freeway at night.

On the drive home, I asked my cousin to look up metal detectors for rent online. She found theringfinders.com. I called The Ring Finders (Steve Smith) immediately, he asked for pictures of the lost earring, the exact area where I lost it, and I texted him the photos. He said he would drop by the park after dinner. At 8:50pm, Steve the ringfinder called my cell asking for more specifics. He was at the park, already looking for the earring with his metal detectors, but couldn’t find it. I requested for him to look at one side of the play area near the benches. 15 minutes later, he texts me, “Found it!” And sent me a photo of my earring. He found the pearl earring and the back of the earring! I am so relieved! It felt like a scene out of a movie but this is real life. I bought these earrings with my first paycheck after college. It’s not about the $, but more of the sentiment. I wear them everyday, and these have been with me through my ups and downs.

Today – 3pm on a Sunday – my husband and I met Steve. He immediately gave me my earring and I hugged him so tight. Steve is a genuinely kind person, who was just happy to help. I had tears in my eyes upon seeing him and my earring. I remembered all the memories I have with this earring: coming to America wearing these pearls, building a family, and finding a career. Steve is a God-send, and I will never forget his kindness. It was a leap of faith to make that first call to The Ring Finders. I didn’t hesitate because I knew they can help me. Steve said their joy is in giving back what they found. And I’m glad their group exists to bring back smiles without expecting a whole lot in return. Thank you, Steve and TheRingFinders. Heirloom Pendant and Chain Lost in Malibu, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I received an email from Aarti last night regarding a pendant and chain she lost that day. She had been at the beach, and realized after she left that it was missing. This pendant her mother had made, after her father died 2 years ago. It had a little lens inserted in it, that when held up to the light enabled the viewer to read a special prayer dedicated to her father. She searched her car, and every other place it could have possibly been with no luck. She then surmised that it must be at the beach, lost somewhere in the sand. she called, and we discussed all of the possibilities, and arranged to meet this morning for a search.

When we met, Aarti took me to the area, and explained what she believed to have happened. We discussed the possibilities, and I told her how I would conduct my search, and then began my search. She told me that she was going to the car to look in that area just to see if it may have fallen off there, and I continued my search. I kept searching, finding numerous bottle caps, and other small pieces of metal. I then got a good strong repeatable signal, and when I dug the chain came out. I scanned the spot again, and in the same hole was the pendant. I looked to the area of Aarti’s car, and saw she was sitting there, so I gathered my equipment and started towards her. She saw me coming, and walked over. I told her that I thought I had been detecting long enough, to which she gave me a quizzical look. It was then that I held out my closed hand, she open hers, into which I dropped to her surprise, the pendant and chain. She was so happy, and relieved to have this special piece of jewelry back. I was so happy to have been able to help her today.

Wedding Ring Lost at Venice Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I woke up this morning and checked my email. I found that I had received an email from Clemens about his wedding ring that he had lost the night before. I asked if he would call me so I could ask him about the loss. He called and described what had happened, and everything seemed to be in his favor, so I told him I would meet him at the beach as soon as I finished my breakfast. Clemens and his family are here from Vienna, Austria, and I knew it would be sad to have to leave such a cherished possession behind when he had to go home.

When I got to the beach Clemens and his young son met me and took me to the spot of the loss. He explained what happened, and I figured there was a good chance of a recovery. I began my grid, and made about 5 passes. I stopped to talk to Clemens when behind me I heard the sound of a tractor. It was the County beach cleaner towing a sifting machine behind the tractor, and he was stopped wanting to begin his pass right where I was looking for Clemens’ ring. Also this was in the wet sand where they never usually clean. Now in all of the years I have been helping people, never have I experienced the greedy audacity of the County employees like today, he knew what I was looking for. This guy wanted to get this ring before I did. I told Clemens not to move and make the County guy go around the area we searching, which he finally did. I made 2 more passes, and boom, Clemens’ ring in my scoop. He was very happy, as was I to be able to hand the ring back to him. Another great day!

Car Key Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

I had just finished dinner last night when I received a call from Cagil who had lost his car key in the sand at the beach. He had gone surfing, and buried his key at the high tide line so no one could find it while he was in the water. He had marked the area with a stick, in order to find it when he got out. What happened though was that while he was surfing, someone moved the stick, so he was unable to pin point the exact area where his key was. Cagil searched for over 2 hours, and was very frustrated at not being able to find his key, and the tide was rising. He then found me on The Ring Finders web site, and I told him I would be there as soon as I could get there.

When I got to the beach, I met Cagil’s friend Easy, who contacted Cagil, then we all went out to the spot where Cagil remembered burying his key. I began my search with no signal whatsoever. Cagil then directed me to another spot where he thought the key might be. I searched one side of the area with nothing, then I moved to the other side, and on the first pass got a solid signal. I scooped, and shook out the sand. There in the bottom of the scoop was the key. Needless to say, Cagil was very happy, not only because all of his belongings were in the car, but also the parking lot closed after dark, and he would have gotten a substantial ticket for having his car there. Well he was also able to finally get out of the wetsuit he had on for hours. It was very nice to be able to help him out last night, and see him happy when I left.

White Gold and Diamond Ring Lost at Venice Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Last Friday morning I woke and checked my email, and found that Yessi had emailed me at 1:40 AM in desperation regarding a ring her sister had lost at the beach the night before. After I emailed her back, Celene her sister called, and I told her I would perform the search the same day even though we were having our second heaviest rainstorm of the year (good to have waterproof machines). It was about 10:00 PM the previous night when Celene removed her ring to fix her hair. She did this because the ring was very thin, her hair would catch on it, and become a nuisance. They were on one of the lifeguard towers when during the fixing of her hair she dropped the ring. She heard it hit the floor of the tower, but when they looked for it, it had disappeared. They then thought it might have slipped between the boards of the floor into the sand below. They looked there under and around the tower for the ring, but it was gone. Yessi would not let this go because she knew this was special to her sister. The ring had been given to her by her parents 14 years prior when she was a young teenager, and she wore it every day since.

When I got to the site the rain was coming down pretty good, so I donned my rain gear, got my machine, and went to the tower to search. I knew this would be a good time because I figured there would be no one out detecting to maybe have found it, and I knew also that the County beach sifters would not have been used on the beach with the wet sand. I searched in the area where I thought she might have been standing (I had to guess because Celene was not able to be there to show me), and widened my search out to where I thought the ring could have possibly bounced to, with no luck. I then began to search behind the tower and found a bottle cap. I removed the bottle cap, scanned again, got a nice foil sound in the headphones, and scooped up a very thin diamond ring. I called back to let Celene know that I found it, and we arranged to meet at a park on Sunday afternoon because of her work schedule. When she got to the park her sister was with her, which was great. It was even more unique to find that they were twins, a special bond for sure. What a great weekend that became. More smiles made!
