I received a call from Stephanie asking for help to find a watch that her husband lost on a private beach in Laguna Beach, CA. After finding the watch she sent me a story of what happened. She tells it much better than I can:

An incredible story….

My husband lost his watch in Emerald Bay.  The watch was very special to him as he bought it for himself as a reward for selling his first company.  We walked the beach for hours looking for the watch, along with employees of emerald bay.  I googled searched while walking on the beach and Stan the ring finder came up.  I called him and he was amazing! He came right away and met me in the beach and found it in 5 minutes.  He was kind and brilliant at what he does! So happy.  Thank you so much. 

I was planning on several hours of searching because it was lost from the cupholder of the beach chain. They had walked more than a couple hundred yards down the beach before realizing the watch was missing.

I like the quick recoveries, they make up for the no find searches that go on for hours.. We don’t write blogs about those long time consuming searches. Sometimes we can’t find the missing item because it is not there.

One of my favorite miracle recoveries …

Susan’s friend contacted me trying to get help to find Susan’s Cartier Gold and Diamond bracelet. Three friends had spent the day in Newport Beach. They had planned to eat out and rent bicycles to checkout the action riding down the beachfront bike/ pedestrian path. They had not planned to be on the beach.

After riding the rental bikes from Balboa Pier to Newport Pier they parked the bikes just before sunset then walked out on the beach at low tide to do some photo shoots. They proceed to walk near the water’s edge 6 blocks to the north where they took photos on the breakwater boulders. That’s when Susan realized her very sentimental and expensive bracelet was missing. 

The bracelet could be anywhere in a two and a half mile area. Much of the possible locations where it could be was the cement bicycle pedestrian beachfront sidewalk. The other was the low tide area of the beach. That could only be searched at low tide that fall in the early AM hours after midnight. There was also a possibility that the bracelet could have dropped into the large breakwater boulders. ( 98% inaccessible).

While waiting for the late night low tide, I searched the small amount of dry sand where the beach sifting machines normally maintain. The first low tide search did not prove to be successful. I knew it would take several attempts at low tide to feel confident that it was searched properly.

The next day after the night search, I remembered what Susan had told me during a phone call.  ( all the clues they gave me were using a celphone as they could not come to the beach ) .. I realized there was an area of dry sand  that I had not scanned. 

I returned to set up a grid search of a 40’x60’ zone of dry sand that doesn’t get sifted by beach maintenance equipment ( AKA The Beach King)…… 20 minutes into my grid search I got a ID of #15 on my Equinox metal detector. That’s usually a bottle cap number. NOT THIS TIME .. ID #15 is also a  open Cartier Love Bracelet. I dug lightly because it was a surface target. I could have easily been reckless with my sand scoop which would have damaged the fragile bracelet and it’s more than 130 diamonds. This is one of the most expensive Cartier love bracelets on their website.

A side note.. This is the newer model of the love bracelet. It has a hinge instead of two gold screws.  When I closed the bracelet it gave me a #20 ID reading on my detector. ( most the time a #20 can be a penny) 

Needless to say, when I called Susan she couldn’t believe the bracelet was found. I did text her a photo of her bracelet first, before calling her with the good news. I had to soften the surprise.

…  John lives in Lake Forest, CA., he had been gardening in his backyard the day he discovered his gold wedding ring was missing from his finger. He had worn that ring for almost fifty years. Although he didn’t discover it missing till later that evening while eating dinner. He felt that the ring had to be somewhere in the backyard because he not been anywhere else that day. 

Four weeks passed and his efforts to search the planters and small area of grass for his special ring were not successful. This week he and hid wife, Wanda were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. His son suggested that he try calling a member of TheRingFinders. That was how John found my contact information. 

I met John and Wanda that same afternoon. He showed me his backyard with several planters filled with beautiful flowers and other ornamental plants. The lawn area was small, maybe less than 40’x40’, but the ring could have been stepped on and hiding under the surface. John told me that he believed it could have been in one of the flower beds, where he had applied 6” of mulch. 

It took a while to scan the lawn and some of the flower beds with my metal detector. The ring did not show up. The last resort is to pull out the Garett AT handheld pinpointer (metal detector). By this time I was running out of areas to search. Using the pinpointer, requires crawling around on my hands and knees, poking the small probe into places the larger metal detector couldn’t penetrate. All the time taking care not to damage any of plants. 

I got half way around the planters to a small elevated water fountain, when I got a good signal from the detector. I had to bend down to see under the fountain and there was John’s gold ring. 

It was a good day and as I watched John looking and holding his ring I could feel the emotion of the moment. This is my reward for doing this, I have the experience, the equipment, the time and the Patience to help people find their sentimental keepsakes. Another day in Paradise

Lost Cartier Trinity Ring Throwing Ball in Grass at a Park .. Costa Mesa, CA.

… Natasha takes her dog out to her neighborhood park every morning in Costa Mesa, CA. This morning walk turned into a  disaster for her, while throwing a ball for her dog her special Cartier trinity ring flew off her finger into the grass. A few minutes searching the grass she realized she would need help. Natasha found my information on a google search that brought up TheRingFinders directory.

After calling me, I was able to meet her at the park within an hour. She had marked the place where she was standing when the Cartier Trinity ring came off he finger. This ring was given to her by her mother and her sister’s also have identical rings. It’s a classic ring that is made with three separate rings white gold, rose gold and yellow gold joined together like a puzzle. This should be an easy ring to find with a metal detector. 

After a half hour searching directly in front and in back of where she was staging when the loss occurred. We found the ring in the grass outside the zone where it should have been. Possibly it may have been blown to the left by strong winds that morning. Maybe she didn’t mark the spot where she standing while throwing the ball? It does seem to be a fact after doing many searches, the item is never where they think it is .. Sometimes we never know what happened, the main thing is the sentimental ring was found.  Needless to say, Natasha was extremely happy and grateful to have this ring returned after wearing daily sence she was a teenager.

… We had snow in the mountains of Southern California. When that happens many who reside in the city make a run to the nearby mountains. The first day of the snow, Linda was able to take her kids to Mt.Baldy which is an easy drive. After taking photos of her girls she put her iPhone 13 in her jacket pocket. Later that afternoon while it was snowing heavily, she realized the phone was missing.

She was sure the phone was in the soft powered snow but the area was probably 50’x50’ area. It was snow hard on that Thursday afternoon so they had to get down the mountain before the snow was too hazardous to drive. Linda and her friend returned Saturday with shovels and couldn’t find the iPhone. Celphone service is non existent at that 6000ft. elevation, making it impossible to use the find my iPhone app. They were again unsuccessful at finding the lost phone.

Linda called me Saturday night asking for help. We agreed that Sunday would be crazy busy with cars and people in the area of the loss. We had set up Monday morning to meet in the spot where the loss occurred. We carefully coordinated the time and place to meet because there is zero celphone reception there. 

I arrived 20 minutes before Linda and her friend, Arizona arrived. The snow had melted and frozen over the last two days. It was about 2 ft. deep and the top 12 “ was solid like an iceberg. Not very encouraging for easy digging. As it turned out Linda’s friend had purchased a inexpensive metal detector at a Walmart. He had no idea how to use it. I took a couple minutes to show him how to set it up. Then we both took a section of the area to scan. Shortly after we started he called me over because he had a signal. I put my detector over the spot and immediately knew the size and ID numbers match what had to be a celphone. 

He wanted to chip away with a shovel on the hard packed frozen snow. I would not let him. I used a small pick-like tool to patiently scratch the surface till we could remove the phone. (10 plus minutes) We didn’t need to do all this work of two days of searching to damage the phone by carelessly digging. Long story, but there were several unexpected twists that I had to share.. I live at the beach, I know hardly anything about retrieving items lost in the snow. That doesn’t mean we can’t find them, first thing to remember is you can’t find a lost item if you don’t try.

It was a pleasure to meet Linda and her friend Arizona, I am happy to be able to do these searches. Linda was also happy that she found me through TheRingFinders directory of independent metal detectorists.

*** I was detecting on a local Newport California beach the other day . A couple of girls ran up to me asking for help to find a special necklace that was lost in the sand. They said the necklace had been on a towel and one of the girls picked the towel, not knowing the keepsake was there. It disappeared into the dry soft sand.

We walked over to the location where I was able to locate the chain and pendant within a couple minutes with my metal detector.

*** Karisa called me after locating my contact information on The RingFinders directory. She said her mother’s gold chain and pendant was lost in the sand at Newport Beach, CA. I was just finishing another search at Huntington Beach, CA., five miles from where Karisa thought her mother’s chain could be. My concern was the incident happened four days ago on the towel line.

I explained to Karisa that four days on this area of the beach may be too late. There is the Beach King sand sifting machine and a chain might have been picked up by another person on the beach. The location she gave me verbally over the phone was easy to find. I stopped by on the way home, walked out on the beach and began a grid search. Four 30ft grid lines was all it took to find this gold necklace that Karisa’s mother had been given 20 years ago while in Egypt.

Sometimes I think I know my local beaches. I would have never bet that this gold chain would still be here after all this time. I called her with the good news. She was very happy and grateful as she knew how much this Neckless meant to her mother. The only thing she didn’t know was how lucky we were that the necklace was not cleaned up in the beach sifter or found by a random beach comber. This is why I always try to search these seemingly impossible type searches.

*** Allen and his friends were at beach front home in Newport Beach, CA. 92660. He was wearing his gold diamond watch with a matching gold diamond ring. These were both very expensive and very sentimental as Allen had been given these to celebrate a special occasion.

Sometime in the late afternoon the white gold diamond ring came off his finger disappearing into the sand. He and his friends searched for it several frustrating hours,  disrupting the party. 

Allen found my contact information after a google search. He was very excited when he called me, asking if I could come right away. It was just four miles from my place but it was late afternoon and with the traffic it took me about a half hour.

I met him on the sand near the patio of the beachfront home. He said he had been shaking his friend’s hand when the ring flew off his finger into the sand. There were beach chairs and longes on the sand. I did a preliminary scan of the sand before moving any of the beach furniture. “Boom” .. the beautiful gold diamond ring in my scoop.

Allen and everyone at the party was excited and relieved that the ring had been recovered. Allen wanted to show me the gold diamond watch that was part of a matching set that was custom made for him. We took a few minutes to do a photo-op. where he want me to take a pic of both the watch and ring. It was a very special search and I was happy to be available to help Allen.

*** Jordan is a student at University of California Irvine, Irvine, CA. He had been on a early morning run on campus when he heard a small ping of a key hitting the cement walkway. He immediately knew it had to be his mail box key which was on his ID tag that is attached by a lanyard.

He was sure it had hit he concrete sidewalk bouncing into the grass. Updated me with the details. It was a short drive for me, less than four miles from my location. He could meet me there in fifteen minutes. Perfect, I was on my way and it sounded like an easy search. 

We met soon after the call. Jordan walked me to a large lawn area pointing across the grass. My heart sank, now the story seemed to change. It has happened more than once. Then he told me the sidewalk was the other side of the large grassy field. 

After walking over the field the spot narrowed down to 5 feet. I got two targets right away, the second one was the brass or bronze key.. Awesome!, I thought I was into two or three hour search. Jordan thought he might have to pay for the loss of the key plus the cost of a new key. Two happy people off to enjoy the rest of a beautiful day.

I was metal defecting at Corona del Mar State Beach in the city of Newport Beach, CA. When I spotted an area that looked like someone had been searching for a lost item. No body was near, so out of curiosity I ran my detector over the zone. Boom!  I dug up a brand new key fob for a Audi Suv car.

I usually turn car keys into the lifguards as that is the first place people go to see if their keys had been found. It was late, the lifeguard office was closed. I detected in the area for another hour hoping the people would return. Now it was dark so, I decided I would drive up to the street above the beach hoping to see a mobile lock service, AAA helping a keyless car owner.

Just for fun I pushed on the key fob buttons and Bingo, I found the Audi Suv.. I waited about a half hour then decided to leave two notes, with my contact information. ( one inside and one in the windshield )

The next morning I received a call from the owner. He was very grateful. He had a share set of keys but they were 450 miles away in San Francisco, CA.. The dealership told him it would be 3 or 4 weeks before they could get him another set of keys. 

Every thing worked out the way it was suppose to be. What is next?
