Anthony called last night about 7:30 PM asking if I would be able to help him find his wedding ring that he lost earlier in the day. I don’t think he was ready for my answer when I told him that I would meet him at the spot of the loss the same night. I believe it surprised him that I was available at the moment. I explained that time was the enemy of a successful recovery, and he asked if he could call back. I also let him know that the fact that it was dark now would not hinder the search. He did call back, and we arranged to meet at the beach at about 9:00 PM.

When I arrived I let Anthony know, and we found each other. He then explained that he and some friends were playing football in the sand, and he realized his “tight fitting” ring was gone when they got back to the car at the end of the day. When he took me out to the area, he showed me a large section of beach to search, and I explained that the process is slow and deliberate in order to not miss anything. I then began at one end of the area working my way back in a nice even grid to the other end of the loss area. The thing that made the search easier was that there was very little metal trash. I did get a few bottle caps, a bit of aluminum, and some tin foil, along with some coins but not enough to slow the search down much. The clean beach allowed me to cover the sand quicker than I expected. After about 1 1/2 hours I got a good sweet gold sound in the head phones, dug, and in my scoop was Anthony’s ring. I just held it out for him to his surprise. He did let me know that he was getting a bit discouraged because I was finding things, but not the ring. I find this happens a lot because the expectation level is very high in the beginning, but wanes as the things that are dug up are not what we are looking for. It is then that with experience I continue on without the discouragement, because I know that the process has to be completed before moving on to other options. I was able to give Anthony back his token of commitment given him by his wife on that special day, which made his day much happier.

As I was leaving the cache search yesterday, I received a call from Patti’s husband asking if I could help find his wife’s ring that she had had for more than 30 years. She had been doing yardwork, and when she was done, she was in the house washing her hands and noticed her ring was gone. They went back out looking for the ring brushing the leaves around looking, but were not able to find it. I told him that I was only about 15 minutes away, and had all my equipment ready to search, so he sent me the address, and I was on my way over.

When I got to the house Patti met me, and explained what she believed might have happened. She then showed me the yard which was completely covered in small golden brown leaves making it very difficult to spot a yellow gold ring even if were sitting right on the surface. There was a pile of leaves that were destined for the trash that I checked first not finding the ring. I then went with Patti to the yard, and began a search, got one signal that turned out to be too deep. I continued, and received a strong double beep signal, looked down, and could see a faint outline of gold peeking through the leaves. I reached down and showed Patti. She and her husband were so very happy, she wanted to give me a hug, which of course I never refuse.:-) That really topped the day, 40 silver 1 oz. coins, and a beautiful ruby and diamond ring, and some really happy people. Awesome!

Wedding Ring Lost in Douglas Park, Santa Monica…Found by Looking Out of the Box

I was at home getting ready to grill up some Johnsonville brats for the family when I got a call from Vamsi. He had been at the park earlier in the day to be with his child. At one point the little one began pulling on his hand. At that time he realized his ring was gone. He wasn’t completely sure that was when the ring was lost, but it seemed the most likely time. I was going to let him know that I was getting ready to cook for the family, and could come when I was done, when my wife who was standing near told me to go and find the ring. She knows how much this service helps people, and would rather wait on dinner to see someone have their joy restored. I took her advice, and told Vamsi I would be there right away.

When I got to the park Vamsi met me and took me over to the playground area where the loss was believed to have happened. There were multiple sand pits with different types of playground equipment, with walkways dividing them. He showed me the sand pit that he believed the loss to have occurred, and I began my search. I got a good signal, and dug a coin. I got another signal, and another coin, and another, and then the area went quiet. I let him know the ring was not there, and asked if he could show me the other area where he thought the ring might have come off. The other pit was on the other side of the playground, about 70 feet away. We started moving in that direction, when I decided to do a search in the sand pit that was behind where he had been originally. I made a few passes when I received another good signal, and dug. I came up empty, and checked again, it was still there so I dug deeper, and came up empty. I checked again, and again it was still there, but deeper than I could have thought the ring might have sunk, and dug deeper. This time I had something in the scoop. I turned on my head light, and in the scoop was Vamsi’s ring. He was very happy, and excited to be able to go home and let his child know that the ring was found. What a fun night!

A cool thing that happened to me today, a bit of an emotional rollercoaster (don’t worry, nothing serious):
For background – my wedding band was purchased from Amazon (prime!) for a variety of reasons. (1) It was $7, at a time that I was spending a lot on other wedding-related expenses, (2) I’m notorious for losing personal items (especially sunglasses) and didn’t want to risk losing something valuable, (3) its cheapness (and replaceability – did I mention Amazon prime?) would cancel any potential emotional attachment, (4) I thought it would make for a funny story.
Well, as things worked out, I’ve held on to the damn thing for almost 5 years. And never lost it outside my house, but the brief times I can’t find it around here I freak out. Emotionally attached indeed.
Today, my kids had the day off for Veteran’s Day, but I was at work. Our new babysitter was helping with the kids, and she took my toddler son to the park a few blocks away. I work nearby so I decided to drop by and say hi. My son was so excited, and grabbed me to follow him to the swing. I chatted nearby with the babysitter, then followed him to another slide. He grasped my hand tightly again to follow him, and I froze – I felt a sudden panic as if I felt my ring fall off. I frantically looked around, sifted through the nearby sand, but couldn’t find anything. Or maybe it didn’t fall off, and it was never there? I’ve definitely left it (or lost it) at home a few times, so that was the more plausible explanation – just a phantom sensation associated with his squeeze and seeing my naked finger. On my walk back to my office, I called my mother-in-law to ask her to check the bathrooms or my nightstand, in case I left it. No dice, but I still knew it could be hiding somewhere.
I went back to the playground about 45 minutes later, did a cursory sweep of the area again and realized the futility of such a task. I spent the afternoon in a bit of a funk. Not certain it was lost on the playground, but very much not certain it wasn’t. This time felt different. I put up an ad on Nextdoor. I started researching metal detectors, and even ordered a basic one on Amazon. I looked for my ring and realized it’s been discontinued, much to my chagrin, but some other company offers an identical one (this time $18! alas!). I contemplated getting a nicer ring this time, but really wanted to keep trying to find it. After all, THIS is the ring that my wife put on my hand on our wedding day. I can’t pretend I’m not invested.
I returned home, futilely searched the few spots it might be, then gave it up to spend time with my kids. My son was sad, but I knew this wasn’t his fault – his only “crime” was being so excited about seeing his father that he may have accidentally pulled off a cheap piece of jewelry? And I can’t even be sure that happened? Perspective!
Meanwhile, someone on Nextdoor recommended a metal detecting network called The Ring Finders, comprised mostly of volunteers and amateur sleuths. On a lark, I contacted the first guy listed in my neighborhood. A man named Steve (https://theringfinders.com/Steve.Smith/)  seemed more than willing to come give it a shot, and said our best bet was to get started ASAP. We arranged to meet at 6:30. I felt sort of sheepish as I drove over to the park, as there was still some shot that I had misplaced it at home, and imagined the entire episode. He pulled out a nicer looking metal detector than the beginner one I had ordered, and a scoop to sift the sand. We set out in the darkness to the area I believed the ring might be hiding. Not 30 seconds later, and he gets a ping, almost exactly where it would be in my mind’s eye! Eureka! Instead, his bucket came up with a half dollar coin. Cool, but not the treasure we were after. He methodically swept the area and moved further away from our starting point. He came up with a few dirty pennies, but nothing else. I started to lose hope, but Steve was undaunted, and we started to move towards the only other area I knew my son and I had been.
Just before we left, he decided to check the other side of the path, in case the ring had flung itself a few meters in the wrong direction. My hopes were fading fast, but onwards. He got a faint pinging, one that indicated the source was buried a little deeper. I was sure this was another penny. The scoop came up with some detritus, but the pinging persisted. He scooped again, and then again. Lo and behold, my little ring! Buried about 6 inches deep, no idea how. I was floored, and beyond grateful. This was a pretty great way to redeem a day that was heading south quickly. Steve asked to photograph the ring, and myself, and we both left the park in great spirits. A good day!
Anyway, just thought I’d share. Thanks to Nextdoor and definitely to Steve. That was pretty cool.

I received a call this morning from Coles, she had lost her ring yesterday at the beach, and was unable to find it even though she had her friends helping. Other friends offered to let her use their metal detectors to go back and find the ring, but they proved ineffective in picking up the ring she was wearing at the time, so she did not try with them. I use the best and latest metal detecting equipment available, so I knew if the ring was still there I would find it. She explained what had happened, and it sounded like everything was in her favor, so we arranged to meet later in the afternoon when she had time available.

I got to the beach a little early, and found a spot in the shade, as it was quite warm today. When Coles arrived we walked out to the area of the loss. I could see where they had been searching the sand the day before. Coles showed me where they had been sitting, and where she was when she was putting her jewelry back on. She did not notice the ring missing until she was ready to leave, but had no idea where it had fallen. I began my grid, and was receiving a lot of electrical interference, so I reduced my sensitivity to diminish it in order to hear the ring when I was over it with my coil. Right when I got to the end of my first pass, I heard a nice sweet gold tone in the head phones, dug, and in my scoop was a big beautiful ring fully encircled with pave and baguette diamonds. I was so glad that I was able find such a ring for her. I believe her smile tells it all. It is always nice to be able bring out such a great smile!

I got a call from Bryan last night. He had lost his iPhone at the beach earlier, and was in desperate need of assistance. He had buried it earlier in order to go in the water and not have to worry about someone walking off with it. It happened to be a work phone, and he was on a business trip from out of state, scheduled to leave today with the boarding pass on the phone. I told him I would be there as soon as possible, so as not leave the phone there until the morning when the county sifting machines would go through, and the phone would be forever gone.

When I got there Bryan took me to the area of the loss, and I could see he had spent a good amount of time gridding the area, but without any luck. I started my search, and on my first pass, got a large signal, dug a little, and retrieved Bryan’s phone. He was very happy, but did not want his picture taken, so as not to be known for losing his company’s phone; understood.

I got an email from Jeremy on Sunday night. He had lost his wedding ring at a sports park the day before in the grass, and was not able to find it. He had removed it, and placed it in the cup holder of his chair to apply sunscreen, a story we hear all too often for sure. I let him know I was available the next day if he could meet me to show me where to look. We agreed on a time, and the meeting was set.

When I arrived Jeremy was waiting for me, and took me right over to the area. He showed me what he had done, and how he had left the field, so I knew where I would be looking. Also knowing this was a relatively new field, I did not expect a lot of metal to be there (foil, bottle caps, pull tabs, etc). That was the wrong assumption for sure, it seemed like there was something almost every swing of the coil that I had to check. A lot of fencing from the field perimeter was in the ground, and giving off a real good signal. This made for a slow search, as I covered the area. I searched all that Jeremy had showed me, and it was now time to expand the search out of the box. I searched into one field with no results, and then went over to the other field, got a good signal, looked down, and there on the surface of some dead grass was the ring. It was white gold which reflected the true color of its surrounding, so it was pretty much camouflaged right in the open. Jeremy had to go back to work, so I called, and he came right over very happy for the recovery. As a member of The Ring Finders, it is a pleasure to create these smiles!

DJ called me because he had lost his wedding ring and special coin at the beach the day before, and was wondering if I could help him. We talked about the loss, and where on the beach the loss happened, and I was very pessimistic of being able to make a recovery because detectorists ply that area daily, as well as the coverage of the County beach cleaners. I wasn’t giving him much hope of a recovery because of the area he initially told me the loss occurred. As we further discussed the loss, it came to be that it happened in an area further away from his original disclosure. I then felt there was some hope feeling that maybe all of the factors that would have caused the ring and coin to be gone did not add up. We arranged to meet at about 11:30 PM to conduct the search because I did not want any more time to go by, taking away any other possible factors that would make the recovery impossible.

When we met at the beach, DJ, his wife, and friend took me out to the area they believed the loss to have occurred. It is very hard in the darkness to locate landmarks, and decide how far a person was from the water depending on tides as well. They gave their best estimate, and I began my search. As I was doing my grid, they were examining further down the beach to see if maybe we were in the wrong area. After about 4 passes, DJ came to me thinking I should maybe work in the area further in the direction they were looking. It was not more than 20 feet away, so I told him that I was searching in that direction, and should just continue the grid so as to not miss any possibility. Then when I got to the end of that grid pass, at about 12:00 AM, that sweet gold sound in the head phones. As I scooped, I saw the chain everything was attached to drape down along my scoop, and knew we had success. DJ’s wife looked over when I reached down to recover the ring and coin, and came over expectantly. I put it behind my back and asked if they still wanted me to move over to other spot, and then brought the chain with the ring and coin out, she just beamed. They were so excited, being married just about 1 year, and thinking the ring was gone forever. It was surely a special recovery, having been lost the day before in a highly searched area. A great night for sure!

I received a call yesterday from Jon, he was on vacation with his family from Texas. They took a trip to the beach to enjoy their last day in California before flying home. He was out in the surf amongst the breakers, when he got hit by a wave that knocked his ring off of his finger into the churning surf. Shocked to realize his ring was gone, he began trying to find it with goggles on, and the breaking waves moving him all around. He spent about 3 hours searching before he found me on The Ring Finders web site. When he called I asked my general questions, and after he said he did not think he was too deep, I let him know I would be there soon.

When I got there Jon met me, and took me over to the area of the loss. He explained what had happened, and how deep he thought he was. The problem was that the tide was coming in, and now 3 hours later was probably out of reach for me, by the look of the breaking waves. I did a search the best I could out in the surf, with not even a signal, it had been too long, so I told Jon, I would come back at 3:00 AM today when the tide would be at its lowest for the day and do another search. I let him know he would be welcome to meet me if he was so inclined, and he accepted the invitation. I got to the beach a little before 3:00 AM and began my search. About 10 minutes later Jon, his wife, and Father in Law came over to where I was searching. I had a couple of faint signals that caused me to dig deep thinking the ring had sunk deep into the soft sand, only to come up empty. Then a couple of passes later I was out in the water about knee deep when I received a good strong signal, dug, rinsed, and there in the bottom of my scoop was Jon’s ring. For the ring to still be knee deep showed that Jon had been much deeper than he originally believed because of today’s 1.3 minus tide. I walked right over to them and presented it to him, to which they were all surprised. So by 3:30 AM Jon had his ring of 10 years back on his finger. He told me he thought it had been gone for good, and that is why we do what we do, to find that which people thought they would never get back, and produce such great smiles. So thankful to make a happy ending to their California vacation, and make their trip back to Texas a pleasurable one!

Yael called explaining that she had lost the ring her mother had given her, in the sand at the beach. She had taken it off, and put it on the blanket they laid out, but forgetting that she had put the ring on the blanket, she picked the blanket up and shook it out. At that point it was too late, the ring was gone. I let her know I would be there as soon as possible, because they were still there, and possibility of a recovery was good.

When I got to the area Yael showed me what had happened, and the possible vicinity of the lost ring. I got my detector ready, and decided to start at the outer part of the perimeter. I turned my machine on, took two swings, got the tone, put the scoop in, and within 10 seconds was able to hand Yael her ring back. It doesn’t always happen like that, but I just happened to chose the right place to start. Needless to say Yael was overjoyed to have her precious ring back again. I was so happy to have been able to be able to give back something she thought was lost forever. Really a great day!

Wedding Ring Lost in the Sand at Hermosa Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Jonny’s friend called me today to see if I was available to come and look for Jonny’s lost wedding ring. They had been at the beach playing catch with a Frisby when as he was going for a catch he felt his ring come off of his hand, watched it fly past his face, he even heard it hit the sand, and it was gone in an instant. He and his friends searched all over the sand with no luck. They found me on the Internet, and called. I asked a few questions, and from everything they told me, it sounded like we would have a successful recovery today. I let them know I would be there as soon as possible, and was on my way.

When I got to the beach, I walked out looking for Jonny. As I got to the slope down to the water I noticed a guy looking around in the sand, and figured he was the gentleman I was looking for. Jonny looked up and came right over. He then explained what had happened, and showed me the Frisby they placed in the area they believed the ring to be. I began my search to the South of the Frisby working North in the direction Jonny had been moving when the ring was lost. I searched out to about 30 feet with no ring. Then went back to the starting position, and began to work to the South of the Frisby. After about 2 passes I got a good strong signal, and there I could see just a slight gimmer shinning through the sand. I reached down, and to Jonny’s disbelief Held up his wedding ring. He had not been married a year yet, so this loss was very sentimental, as he had not had the ring very long. Needless to say he was very happy, and I was happy to have had the pleasure to make his day!

Here is my story: A few days ago, on Friday, May 24thI was on the beach in Hermosa tossing the Frisbee around with some friends and I went running after a long pass. When I was in stride chasing after the Frisbee, I felt my wedding ring go flying off my finger, I heard the ring hit the sand, and in a matter of seconds, the ring disappeared in the sand. My heart dropped, and all I could think of was how pissed off my wife was going to be because the ring was going to be gone forever. I had four friends on their hands and knees in the sand trying to help me find my ring, and after about 30 minutes of looking I felt hopeless, I felt like giving up, cursing left and right to myself that the ring is gone. Someone brought up a metal detector, then someone else looked on their phone and found Steve at Ring Finders. Steve said he would be there as soon as possible to help us try and find the ring. My friends had to leave the beach, but I was still looking and waiting for Steve to arrive. I thought to myself, this guy isn’t going to even come, and if he does come, he isn’t going to find my ring, there is no way. Steve ended up arriving about 45 minutes later (the time he said he would be to the beach) and I explained the situation to him and where the ring could be. I asked him what the probability of him finding the ring was, he simply said, “if it is in this area, and you didn’t move from this area, I will 100 percent find it.” About 10 minutes into the search, Steve found my wedding ring, he bent down and picked up and I thought, no way, no way, I cannot believe he found my ring. I asked him what I owed him, he said, “if you want to give me a reward, you can.” I gave him a big hug, shook his hand, thanked him a hundred times, and give him all the money I had in my wallet, $37.” I just want to personally thank Steve at Ring Finders, and let people out there know, that Steve is the real-deal, and if you lost a wedding ring, or any other prized possession, Steve will find it.
