Cynthia, Eric’s wife called me today about the loss of Eric’s cell phone and two sets of keys including his car key. He had gone surfing, and to hide his valuables, he buried them in the sand. When it was time to go though, he was unable to find them. I was available, and let them know I would get there as soon as traffic allowed.

When I arrived, we found each other at the populated beach. I could see where Eric had been looking. He had cleared an area about 12 ft by 12 ft, and about 6 to 8 inches deep. I could tell he had been working very hard to find his keys and cell phone, at least a couple of hours of digging on a very hot day, but was not able to find the belongings. I began my search going over all that he had uncovered, and his stuff was not there. As soon as I started searching out of the area, I got a solid signal, and dug with my hands in order to not damage the cell phone, and had the items in my hand in seconds. needless to say, Eric and Cynthia were very surprised and very happy to have their keys and phone back. I was so happy to have been able to help them. It was surely a great day!

Katy contacted me yesterday about a ring she lost the night before. It was her wedding ring. She had been shaking her hand in the driveway when both her wedding ring and engagement rings flew off of her finger into the grass next to the driveway. She and her husband searched for the rings, and were able to find the engagement ring, but not the wedding ring. I was finishing up breakfast, and let her know I would be there as soon as I got my equipment together, and hopped on the road. Katy was not going to be able to be there, but had a babysitter that I would be able to give her ring to when it was found.

When I got to the house I let the babysitter know that I was going to begin my search. Katy had sent me some pictures of the area along with some explanation of what had happened which helped to focus the search area. I began where she had marked the asphalt showing where she had been standing while shaking her hand, and worked out from there. From what she had told me I figured she had been facing the street, and shaking her hand out towards the grass, so I focused my search out in the yard, and into a planter that was in the middle of the yard. I then began to work out towards the street in the grass. The ring was not there, so I went back to the starting point and started working in the opposite direction back towards the fence line, when about 12 feet back I got a nice solid signal, and looked down to find the ring sitting on the surface, waiting for a lawnmower to come along and destroy it. Katy was not able to be there for the return, so I got in the photo instead. She did let me know how happy she was that the ring was found. I do enjoy reinstating smiles for people!

Gold Wedding Ring Lost in Van Nuys Yard…Found and Returned.

Russ called yesterday requesting my assistance in finding his wedding ring. He was out in the yard with his son 3 days earlier at about 9:00 PM, when with the flick of his wrist his ring flew off of his finger. Because it was dark he was not able to see which direction the ring went, but was able to hear it hit the concrete driveway and roll. He had spent the last few days raking the flower beds trying to find the ring, without luck. I told him I would come right away.

When I got to his house, Russ took me over to the area of the loss, and I had him reenact what had happened. He showed me where he had been searching, and explained how he had conducted his search. I went over the flower beds with a quick search, not finding his ring. What I did find was that the area was littered with a ton of BB’s from previous target practice in the area, so I went over the area again at a slower pace. Not finding the ring again I began to expand the search area in the same direction of the wrist flip, but was unable to find the ring. I then began to search in the other direction in the flower beds with no luck also. Russ then had to run an errand, so I went totally out of the box and began to search opposite of the sound Russ had heard the other night, and on the other side of the driveway under a bush in the exact other direction I found Russ’ ring. I left it where I found it, so I could show Russ that rings can have a “mind” of their own when it comes to getting lost. When he got back and I showed him his ring he was very surprised that it could have ended up where it did, but was extremely happy to have it back. What a great day!

I received a call from David; he lost his wedding ring at the beach, and although he knew the small area in which it was lost, was unable to find it. I asked a few questions, and let him know that I would come immediately so as to not let time work against the recovery of his ring.

When I got to where they were sitting at the beach, I could see where they had been looking because of the grid marks in the sand. I then asked David to show me what happened, and from then I began my search. I swung once over some flip flops, and got a good signal, but noticed they had small buckles on them, so I moved them to another area. I swung again, and received the same signal, dug once, and had David’s ring in my scoop. It seems as though they had placed the flip flops right over the ring as they searched for it. David was very happy to have his ring back, and I was happy to have made his day!

Diamond Stud Earring Lost in the Grass in Newbury Park High School…Found and Happily Returned.

I received a call from Demond about a lost diamond stud earring he lost in the grass at a high school where he coaches football. We arranged to meet the next day in order to get right on the search so as to not let too much time go by.

When I got there Demond met me and took me to the area of the loss. He showed me where he and the team he was coaching had pulled the grass up looking for the lost earring with no luck. I began my search in a grid pattern, and made a few passes. Demond then showed me where he thought the earring actually came off, so I moved to that spot to continue the search. After about 5 or 6 swings of the coil over the grass, I got a good solid signal, and switched to my pin pointer. I worked through the grass, and then the pin pointer was hearing the metal in the muddy dirt under the grass, so I worked my finger in to dislodge whatever it was, when I saw the earring come up, and flip into the already moved grass. It just made for a little more searching, but I eventually recovered the earring, and gave it back to Demond, who was very happy, because the earrings were a present from his wife for their anniversary. His smile tells it all!

I received a call from Jane today about a lost ring. She had been in her backyard throwing a ball to her dog, when making a throw her late husband’s ring that she wore daily, flew from her finger, and was gone. I asked a few questions, and we arranged to meet later in the afternoon to do the search.

When I got to Jane’s house, she took me to the backyard, and we talked about the loss. I asked her to reenact the throw, and then began a search in the direction of where the ball had flown. I went over the grass, checked all the flower pots, checked and shook all the bushes, under the bushes, and out to the fence; no ring. I then went over the yard once more to insure I had covered all areas, no ring. I asked if she had a ladder, and checked up on the garage roof, no ring. Jane had resolved to find the ring whenever it showed up, but I really wanted to know why we were not able to find it, so we went back behind where she had been standing, and looked on her gravel patio. I told her a story about how rings are not usually where you think they are, so we began to look around the patio. I just got finished saying that if it was here, that it would be in plain sight. I turned right looked down on the gravel, and there it was. I let out a whoop letting her know I had found it. It had come off of her left hand, and flown  15 behind and to her right about another 10 feet; amazing! Jane was so happy! This ring is something she wears to keep her husbands memory close to her all the time.

Wedding Band Lost in Manhattan Beach, CA Yard…Found and Happily Returned.

Eric called today about his wedding band he had lost in his backyard over the Memorial weekend, during a grilling session. He went to wipe his hands off in the grass, when while swiping them his ring went flying. He and his family searched for a couple of hours without any luck. After a few questions, I agreed to do the search. He was going to be at work, so we arranged to have me meet with his wife Anna at the house later in the day.

When I arrived, Anna met me at the backyard gate, and took me back to the site of the loss. She showed me approximately what happened. From what it looked like, the ring should not have gone far, but having done these searches over the years, I have found that these rings sometimes go in the least expected of places. I searched the area where I expected the ring would have gone first, no luck. I then began a search over all the rest of the yard, and on the last pass, all the way on the other side of the yard, further back than it should have been, I found Eric’s ring. Rings are kind of like weird people; they just do their own thing. It was a pure pleasure to be able to hand Anna her husband’s ring, that they thought was lost for good. Truly a great day!

Diamond Engagement Ring Lost in Van Nuys Park…Found and Joyfully Returned.

A week ago Monday I received a call from Megha; she had lost her engagement ring while celebrating the Holi Festival of Colors at a park the day before. She had been covered in colored powder from the festivities, and while trying to brush off some of the powder she with one flick of the wrist felt her ring fly off of her finger into the grass. She and friends and family searched all over for the ring, but were not able to find it. I told her that I could be there the next morning, but she did not have transportation to the park, so we had to wait until this last Friday to do the search. I was concerned that the ring would not be there when we did the search, but I promised to do the search for her none the less.

When I arrived to the park 4 days later, Megha’s Husband met me and took me out to the area of the loss. As we were walking out across the grass, about the equivalent of 4 football fields, I could see and feel that the thatch was about 4 inches thick, and was mowed long to keep the lawn healthy, so I knew how the ring disappeared so quickly. Megha was looking in the area she believed the loss occurred. We discussed how it happened, and I got ready for the search looking at a very wide expanse of grass, and thinking it might be a long search. I began, and made 3 short passes, when I got a good strong repeatable signal. I put the pin pointer in and there it was Megha’s beautiful engagement ring; she had remembered the exact spot! Needless to say she and her husband were very grateful. It was a wonderful day!

Metal Access Plate Covered by Asphalt in Long Beach, CA…Found

Last week I received a call from a contractor trying to find an access plate that had been covered over by about 4 inches of asphalt in the repaving of a parking lot. He did not want to rip up a bunch of the new asphalt to find the plate. When I got there he gave me a general area for the search, and in about 15 minutes, he was able to continue his work. Another happy day.

Diamond Wedding Ring Lost in School Dumpster in Van Nuys, CA…Happily Found.

I received a call about 9:00 AM from Kathi, she lost her diamond wedding ring the day before, and was wondering if I could help. I asked her how it happened that the ring was lost, and she explained that she was at a school where she worked, and was toweling off her hands after washing them. She believed that the ring inadvertently came off in the paper towels, and were thrown away in the trash. I asked if the containers were still in their place, but she informed me that the janitorial staff had cleaned them all out and put all the trash in the dumpsters. It seemed as if it would be a “needle in the haystack” search, but I told her I would leave immediately.

When I got to the school, I saw that it was a very large one, which had many dumpsters. I then became disheartened. Kathi met me and took me to an office complex in one corner of the school where it was that she worked which had its own dumpster corral. When I looked, there were 4 dumpsters. Under closer inspection, one had green waste, one was empty, and one was just cardboard recyclables; that narrowed the search down to one dumpster which was overflowing with the exact same black plastic bags. I started pulling bags and looking in them for anything that might show it came from an inside container, as most of them had food in them, and looked as if they were from the outside cafeteria. I emptied about half of the dumpster and detected one bag, which was full of foil pull tops from milk containers, every one of them sounding like a gold or platinum ring. Kathi came over and I explained that we needed to try to look in each bag to see if there was something she recognized in order to speed the process, because I would be there all day going through each bag, so we began the looking. All of a sudden she recognized a pamphlet, so we took that bag and emptied it out on the ground, and I began my detecting. Many more foil pull tops, and then all of a sudden after getting a good signal and putting my pin pointer in, I moved a paper towel, and there was her beautiful diamond ring. Kathi had her back to me when I grabbed the ring, I picked it up and held it out to her when she turned, to her total surprise. She told me how her husband worked extra to save for this ring to give her for their 25th anniversary. Funny thing is she had not told him of the loss, she told me she didn’t have the heart to let him know after he had worked so hard for it. Then not 15 minutes after I found the ring as we were standing there talking, the trash truck came in and emptied the dumpster! I told Kathi that we “dodged a bullet” on this one; WOW! So happy to have made her day!
