I received a call from Beth asking for help in finding her lost ring. She had been at the beach the day before, and made sure she wisely removed it, and put it in the zippered pocket of her bag where she also put her COVID mask. As she was getting ready to leave the beach, she removed her mask to put it on, and surmised that the ring came out with it, and was lost in the sand. I asked about the area, and she said that it was on the slope down to the water as opposed to being in the dry sand. It sounded like a good possibility of a recovery if it was out of the way of the county beach cleaning machines, and if another detector did not find it first. I told her I would leave as soon as possible to meet her there.

When I arrived Beth met me and took me to where she had been the day before. I realized it was high tide, and there was some good sized surf, so I went back to my vehicle to get my waders, to insure I could get out into the surf if needed. The sand was soft in the area she showed me, so I figured the ring would not have moved much laterally, but would have sunk with the movement of the water, which was a good thing. I made one pass close to the cut, then turned to make my second pass. I was about halfway into the second pass when I received my first signal, which was solid. I dug, and in the scoop was a small gold ring. I held the ring up to Beth’s disbelief. She came right over to check it out. She tried it on, it fit. Then she checked the inside for the inscription, yes it was there; this was her ring. Beth was very happy, and I was so glad to be a help for her!

Steve called, he had lost his wedding ring the previous day at a heavily machine cleaned beach. It had been in the pocket of his pop up tent, and he forgot it when he wrapped everything up to head home. We talked, and it sounded like it may have been lost On the towel line, which reduces the possibility of a recovery. I let him know I would come and do the search for him because in the Winter, the County doesn’t always clean the beaches daily like they do in the Summer.

When I got there, I waited for Steve, and when he arrived, he took me over to where the possible loss occurred. The one thing that was instantly noticeable, was that the machines had not gone through that day which buoyed my hopes of a recovery. I began my grid working the outer edge of the area he showed me, working my way towards the other side, pass by pass. After about 5 passes, and 3 or 4 bottle caps, I got that signal I was waiting for, dug, and was rewarded with a nice chunky ring in the scoop. I held it up for Steve, and he immediately rejoiced. He had been married for 8 years, and this was the ring. What a happy day!

Steve sent the following testimonial:

Steve,

I just wanted to send you a quick email to thank you again for the amazing find this afternoon.

I was fairly certain that all hope was lost and I was preparing for the worst, yet within minutes of meeting you, you had found my wedding ring! Simply amazing! Your willingness to take the time out of your day to drive down to the beach to help a total stranger is a true act of kindness. I am truly grateful.

I appreciate your time and efforts and hope to see you again sometime down on the water.

Best,
Steve

I got a call from Roman about a lost ring. He and his wife had been at the beach the night before, and when they were ready to leave his wife Evelin realized her engagement ring was missing. It was dark, and very hard to see as they searched for it. They were unsuccessful in their search, and called me the next day. From what they told me, it seemed as though the county beach cleaning machines had not come through this day, so I felt there was a good chance of a recovery. They told me they would not be able to meet me, but provided a Google Earth shot showing where the loss occurred, and I let them know I was going immediately.

When I got to the area, I lined myself up with the landmarks, and began my search, only to look up as I was being hailed by a young couple waking towards me, “Are you Steve?” I let them know that I was, and Roman and Evelin let me know they were able to work it out for them to come to let me know where to look. It was a good thing, as I was off by about 4o feet. I began my search where Evelin thought she might have lost the ring by shaking sand off their gear. She also showed me another possible area to search, which I would get to as soon as I finished where I was looking already. At that point they left, I believe to go and get some lunch. I did not find her ring in the first area, and began to work my way over to the other area. It was when I reached the spot she was standing when she introduced the second spot I received a nice gold signal, dug, and had a beautiful ring in my scoop. I called to let them know I found the ring, they were so surprised. They had been married for a year and a half, and this ring meant a lot to them. A very blessed experience indeed!

Phil contacted me after losing his car key. He had gone surfing, and buried his key under his towel at the beach, but when he left, he grabbed his belongings and went to the car only to find out he left his key behind. He was able to get back to the approximate area of the loss, but all the sand looks the same once you leave, and he was unable to find his key. I let him know I would be on my way for the search.

When I got there I met up with Phil, and he took me to the area of the loss. I could see that he had been searching the area by dragging his feet through the sand, so I knew the area to begin the search. I went over the whole area collecting things such as bottle caps, tin foil, and pull tabs from aluminum cans, but no key, so I began to expand my search area. I went closer to the water, but no key, and then began working my way away from the water. When I was right next to a couple of young ladies who had set their towel after Phil had been there I got a good signal, dug, and lifted up a Zip Lock bag which Phil immediately recognized; it was his key. Phil was very grateful to have it back, and it nice to make his day.

I received a call from Jamie who had lost two rings. She had put them in her child’s rash guard pocket while applying sunscreen, and before she knew it, the boy was off into the water swimming and splashing around as deep as he could go. I told her I would come to do the search, and would leave as soon as possible.

When I got there Jamie met me, and showed me where the loss occurred, and the tide was retreating, but it was not going to be optimal. I began my search going into the surf as deep and close to the breakers as was possible for a recovery. The breakers were strong. I searched for about 30 minutes, and received a good signal about waist deep in the surf, dug a couple of times, and retrieved Jamie’s diamond wedding band. I was encouraged, as I continued to search for the other ring. I searched the whole area she was concerned about, and began to search out of the box, I continued my search until the incoming tide forced an end. I went back the next day to look again, but no luck on the second ring. I then went back another day, when the tide went into the minus stage at about 2:00 AM, but still no luck. I will be going back when I think conditions have benefitted the possibility of a recovery, but I was thankful to have been able to get one of the rings for her.  I do enjoy this service.

Matthew contacted me regarding the loss of his wife’s ring. They were at a friend’s house for 4th of July, out on the backyard deck that overlooks the city watching fireworks, when she removed her ring and it dropped in the darkness. This was a ring her mother had given her, so it had a strong sentimental value. She heard it hit the deck, and then it was gone. They searched for it in the darkness thinking it may have gone through one of the cracks in the deck because it is a thin ring, or gone over the side into the leaves and brush. We made arrangements to meet later in the day for the search.

I got to the house, and met Matthew and his wife. They showed me what had happened, and where she was standing when the ring dropped. It was close to the side where there was a chain link fence closely positioned to the retaining wall that the deck was built on. I began my search under the deck to eliminate that area as a possibility. I then went into the area between the fence and the wall which was only about 2 feet wide narrowing down to about 8 inches at the bottom which was thick with dead leaves. I could not use my detector, because of the closeness of the chain link fence, nor could I use my standard pin pointer for the same reason. I had to use a special pin pointer in order to get close to the fence without getting false readings. I worked that area moving along slowly, finding pieces of the fence from when it was installed. I searched about 8 feet when one of the signals turned out to be the ring. When I brought it out of the leaves, Matthew who was watching from the deck above could not believe it was found. I handed it to him, and he handed it to his wife. They were both very happy, and it was great to see her smile after getting the ring back.

I awoke and found I had received an email from Leah. She had been at the beach the day before, when while in the water, she was struck by a wave, and knocked down. When she arose, she realized her ring was gone. Noticing the time the email was sent (12:17 AM), I could tell this was a distraught appeal for help. She told how this was her Grandmother’s wedding ring, a Grandmother I found out later, had passed away. This was a reminder of her Grandmother that she carried with her daily, so it turned out to be a great loss. Leah was not able to meet me at the beach to show me where to look, but had given some information in her email, and also sent me a Google Earth picture with an outline showing the loss area. I went at the earliest low tide that day.

I arrived at the beach, and began my search at one end of the area pictured, and began my grid. I continued my search, with very few targets, for about 1 1/2 hours, with no ring. I finished what I thought was the limit for that direction, and decided to go back to my starting point, and worked the other direction. I made about 4 new passes when that sweet sound came through the head phones, loud and clear. I dug, and in the pile on the edge of the sand was a nice glimmer of gold. I reached down, and picked it out, and it was Leah’s ring. I emailed her right away with excitement, and we arranged to meet the next day make the return. When we met, her mom was with her, and explained the importance the ring to Leah, and how devastated she was when it was lost. Leah was very happy when I gave it back, and her smile says it all!

Leah sent the following testimonial:

After I lost the ring, I just kept telling myself that it’s okay and it’s just a ring. But it kept bothering me and I felt so sad as if I lost someone. I lost the ring in the afternoon and I was still up and crying about it past midnight. I really couldn’t believe that I had just lost something so important me so fast. At one moment I was having fun with my friends splashing in the shallow waves (and making sure my ring was on and safe). The next minute later, I was trying to get up from being hit with a scary wave and then I realized my ring was gone.

I already felt much better after contacting Steve. Knowing that someone would still be searching for the ring, comforted me and I had hope! Once the ring was found, I literally felt “in balance” again. The ring was my late grandma’s and wearing it everyday for over three years now has always kept me tied to her. Having it back felt like I had a part of my grandma with me again.

Steve was incredibly kind when we met each other. His dedication and passion really meant a lot to me, he truly cares about his work!! I will always remember this story and Steve!

Thank you Steve!!!!
Leah

I got an emergency call from Alex last night; she had lost her car key in the beach sand. It was about 9:30 PM, and she had her children with her, and needed to be able to get home, so I let her know that I would be leaving for the search immediately.

When I got there they were waiting for me, and Alex took me out to where she believed the loss occurred. I began my search, and found numerous pieces of trash metal, and one house key, but not her car key. It was then that her children came down to beach, and showed us that we were searching about 60 feet off target. I went to where they showed me to search, and began another search. I worked it out one way with no key, and then worked out the other way, and after 2 passes, got a good shallow signal, scooped, and by 11:00 PM had her key.  Alex was very happy to be able get her children home. It was a great night!

I was out on the bike path of the beach yesterday getting some exercise when I received a call from Eric. Eric explained to me that he had been in his yard with some friends the other day when somehow his new hearing aid fell from his ear into the grass. He told me how they had searched, but were unable to find it. We arranged to meet today to do the search.

I got to his house as soon as I was able, and met Eric. He had his remaining hearing aid in a “Zip Lock” bag waiting for me so I could check to see if my detector would be able to pick it up. I laid it out on the grass of his yard, and scanned it, there was enough metal for it to see. I then checked it with my pin pointer, also a good signal. Eric showed me where he had been most of the day, so I began my search checking each good signal, but it was not in that area. I then began moving out of the box. Eric showed me where he had raked the leaves and debris to the edge, so I made sure to check there as well, no hearing aid. As soon as I moved out of the area he had showed me I got another good signal, put in my pin pointer, and there it was. The color was somewhat neutral, so it really blended in with the surrounding grass and dirt, but there it was. I brought it over to Eric, who was very happy to have it found. I was great to be able to help him out; a fine day!

Eric sent the following testimonial:

“I cannot say enough about how lucky I feel that I found Steve Smith via Ringfinders network. A relatively new and expensive hearing aid somehow fell out of my ear while having a small , “social distancing” cocktail with friends in our backyard recently. My wife and I raked and raked the grass with expectation that we would find it-but failed. I then decided to try to rent a metal detector to search again by myself-but, found that to be a tough process. And, as my new hero Steve pointed out, I would have had trouble learning how to use it. I found Steve via a Google Search and the rest was history. We live in Pasadena area Foothills-which is a long schlep for Steve-but he drove over the next day. He is a class act and a real gentleman and he found the device after almost an hour of very dedicated searching. My only “quibble” with Steve’s services is that he lets the customer decide on payment. I decided to both pay him, and then make a donation to a charity that he chose. Eric”

Yesterday Willy called and asked if I could help him find his ring. He had been with friends at the beach having a fire a few days earlier, when he touched the hot fire grate. As soon as the pain registered he flipped his hand with a natural reaction. Unfortunately the ring his girlfriend had given him flew off his finger and was gone. We arranged to meet at the spot when he was available, which was later in the afternoon.

I got there at the appointed time, and Willy took me down to the beach and showed me where and how the loss occurred. I began my search realizing there were a whole lot of bottle caps, and other unwanted metal discarded in the surrounding area. I dug everything in order to not allow any masking to hide what I was looking for. I searched all around the area finding a bunch of trash metal but no ring. Willy’s friend suggested trying in an area that was in a completely opposite direction of where the loss might have occurred, and I went over to try, because looking out of the box sometimes is the road to a recovery. The ring was found in that new area not long after I started searching there, and I was able to give it back to Willy, who was real joyful about the recovery. A wonderful recovery for sure!
