Gold Ruby Ring Lost at Huntington Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

I got a call yesterday from Deena regarding a ring she lost at the beach. She was there with some friends and their dogs having a fun time, when she picked up a ball to throw for one of the dogs. She made an underhand throw, and as the ball left her hand, so did her ring. She thought it should be where the ball had landed, so she and her friends looked and looked with no results. She found me on the internet, and I asked a few questions, and then let her know I would be there as soon as I could get there.

When I arrived, I found them down on the beach where the loss occurred, and Deena proceeded to show me what had happened. She had thrown towards the water which worried me a bit because the tide was coming in and the wave action was a bit intense at the water line. I began where they believed the ring had gone going up and down the slope getting a bottle cap, a few pennies and a quarter, but no ring. I then went down closer to the water when it receded and made a few grids there. They really did not believe it was that far, so I came back up and decided to cross grid the area I had already searched, but with a much wider grid. I made 3 more passes, and was way outside of the original search area when I got a real good signal in the head phones. I put the scoop in, shook it out, and there in the bottom was a cool looking custom gold ring. I reached in and held it up to Deena’s and her friend’s surprise. They had no idea that the ring would have gone so far to the left of where she had thrown the ball. Rest assured, we as Ring Finders know to look out of the box, because a lot of times rings seem to do the impossible. I was so glad to have made 3 wonderful smiles yesterday. A great time!

Wedding Ring lost at Malibu Beach, CA…Found and Joyfully Returned.

I received a text from Akida last night about his lost ring, wanting to meet today for a search. He had been at the beach with a friend, and had removed his ring placing it on the blanket. After watching a beautiful sunset, it was now dark, and they decided to leave. Akida’s friend picked up and shook the sand off of the blanket, and of course the ring went flying, but by then it was too late, it was now hidden in the sand. I sent him a text back arranging a time when I would be able to meet him at the beach. We agreed on a time, and I arranged my time in order to meet him today.

When I got there Akida took me to the spot at the beach where the loss occurred. I began my search in an area that from what he had shown me was not very big, and began to find numerous pieces of metal, mostly bottle caps. I continued my search in the confined area where they had been sitting and the blanket first lifted up with no luck, so I began expanding out to where blanket had been shaken. It was then I got that sweet sound of gold in the headphones. I looked over to Akida and said that this was the best signal I had had during this search. One scoop, and I reached in and pulled out a shiny gold ring much to Akida’s delight. Wonderful smile to go along with a wonderful return. It sure is fun making people happy!

Two Rings Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I received a call from Dmitri yesterday regarding two rings that he had lost the night before. He and some friends had gone to the beach after dark, when Dmitri decided to go for a swim. Wisely he removed his two rings, and placed them on his shirt while he went in the water. When got out he went up and picked up his shirt, and remembered too late that his rings were there. He and his friends searched around for about an hour with no luck. Dmitri searched the internet, and found me through The Ring Finders web sight. We decided to meet as soon as I could get there.

When I got to the beach Dmitri and his family met me to show me the area he believed the loss to have taken place. The problem was that it was dark when the rings were lost, so being able to identify the exact area was very difficult, so I figured we would search quite a bit outside of the box. As I began, I was finding quarters and dimes, which to me was a very good sign that no one else had been through there. Also it did not look as though the county had cleaned the beach that morning which also made me more hopeful for a successful search. I continued to expand the area as Dmitri pointed out in pictures they had taken when they were there in the dark. I know how discouraging it can be for those we are trying to help when we keep pulling up bottle caps, pull tabs and miscellaneous coins, but Dmitri seemed to keep a positive attitude while I continued my search. After about 3 hours, I began a search along a ridge of sand just outside of the area I was shown by Dmitri, and got another good signal, but this time there in the sand was gold. I reached down and picked it up, Dmitri’s ring, then offered it to him. He was looking right at it but seemed a bit bewildered by the fact that it was actually found at first. He took the ring, then a few more scoops, and we had his second one. The word he said to his wife when he showed her the rings was, “Magic”. It sure is magic to see the smiles on the faces of those who have lost what they believe they might be lost forever, when it is handed back to them. Great day! Dmitri was camera shy, so I got to hold the rings for the blog.

In the evening, I decided to swim in the ocean at Santa Monica beach. I left my rings on my T-shirt and after swimming I took it so abruptly so the rings fell in the sand. It was already dark, so I spent an hour trying to find them but it was not possible. I tried to take a picture of the place and views to be able to track this place. In the morning, I looked up in the Internet where I can buy or rent metal detectors, but all of them must be only shipped.

I had to be quick to start searching since other people could also find them. So, I googled the website theringfinders.com and read all amazing stories about wonderful results of their search. I found Steve Smith who covered our area. His reviews we excellent. He helped many people in the same situations, so I immediately called him.

Steve promptly asked me questions about the location, and we met in less than 2 hours. After identifying the area, he started searching. He found a lot of coins and can caps. He told me it was a good sign because it meant nobody was there, and there was a big chance the rings were still in the sand.

After 3 hours of searching, we went all over again, taking wider area into consideration. And suddenly at one more sound of metal Steve dug the sand and there found my ring. The second ring came right after it. They were around 5 inches deep in the sand, so obviously, they could not be found without Steve’s help. Steve said you should never give up while searching things in sand and he was absolutely right! Thank you, Steve!

Van Key Lost in Palos Verdes Estates, CA…Found and Returned.

I received a call from Paul last week regarding a key to his van he had lost 4 days prior. Paul has a dog walking business, and has a trail he likes to take the dogs on. When he arrives a the location, the dogs, after having been in the van for a while need to do their business. He carries a pocket full of plastic bags in order to clean up after them, and pulls one out whenever needed. The area right at curb side where he goes is about a half acre covered in a thick mulch, and when he has to pickup after one of the dogs, he has all the others pulling on him to go on their walk, this can make for a bit of canine anarchy. When cleaning up after one of the dogs, Paul pulled out a plastic bag, while being pulled by all of the other dogs, not realizing that his key had been pulled out with the bag, and lost in the mulch. He had gone back each day for 4 days looking for and not being able to find the key. We agreed to meet at the spot while he was walking his dogs, so I could get an understanding what actually happened.

When I got to the location, I sent Paul a text to let him know I was there. He sent one back to let me know he was there as well, and would meet me soon. I began to get my equipment ready when I turned around to see a gentleman coming down the trail surrounded by at least 15 dogs; what a sight, it looked surreal. All of the dogs were working as one unit with Paul at command. I would not have expected the dogs to have behaved so well with most all of them coming from different homes. Paul showed me what had happened to cause the loss, and then had to leave so he could take the dogs to their homes. I began my search in the mulch, and covered the area, with no key. I then went back to the start point, and began a cross grid, and after a few passes, got a good signal. I looked down, and there was the key, looking back at me from the mulch. I sent a text to Paul , and we arranged to meet this week to get the key back. I was glad to get a picture that shows this man with his happy dogs, and his smile with his found key. A lot of fun!

Wedding Ring Lost While Gardening in Thousand Oaks, CA…Found and Joyously Returned.

Andrew called me a few days ago explaining how he had been gardening in his yard, moving a lot of gravel around, and installing stone steps. When he was done with his work he noticed his ring was gone. He asked me questions usually asked by people who call, and I told him I would be able to help the next day if that would work for him. He thanked me, but told me he had purchased a metal detector, and was going to do a search on his own. I encouraged him, and tried to give as many pointers as I could so he could be successful. Later that next day I received another call from Andrew, he had been unable to find the ring, and asked if I could possibly come out and help. I told him I was going to be out in his area the next day, yesterday, and would drop by when I was done.

We connected, and I arrived at Andrew’s house. He took me out to the area where he believed the loss occurred, and showed me the many screws, nails and bits of metal he had found with his $49.00 detector, and I said at least he knew the detector was working. If he had not already purchased the detector I might have tried to discourage him a bit because most of the inexpensive detectors do not have to capability to distinguish metals like the ones I use. I always bring the best and most up to date detectors that can be purchased to my lost item recovery searches. He explained what he had been doing, and where he had been when moving the rocks around, so I then went to work. I swept my coil around the area he had been working, there was a lot of iron, but not the tones I was looking for. I then made a wide sweep, and way over to the right of the working area, I heard it, the tone I was listening for. I looked over at Andrew, and asked if he had been over on that side. I kept moving my coil over the tone as I asked. Andrew moved over, looked down, and saw a glint of gold coming from under a rock, and said that’s it! He reached down and retrieved the ring that had eluded him for 3 days. It was his wedding ring, that had been his dad’s wedding ring. Now that is special. What a great day, and much happiness!

Two days ago I lost my wedding ring doing yard work. It was my fathers wedding ring so it had double sentimental value. My wife and I were sad about losing it so I went out and bought a cheap metal detector and found a bunch of screws. I googled ring finders and found Steve. I couldn’t believe he would come all the way out to Thousand Oaks from Palos Verdes for a donation but he did and much to my surprise he found it in no less than one minute. I took him to the part of my yard where I was putting in stepping stones into some 1” gravel. I had used my metal detector down a 4 foot path of rocks and like I said, only found screws. His metal detector was much more sophisticated then mine and with it and his expertise found my ring almost instantly. He told me it has a certain tone for gold. I just couldn’t believe it. Wedding Ring Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I was sitting at home last Sunday afternoon when I received a call from Julian regarding his wedding ring which he lost at the beach playing volley ball. He told me that he dove for the ball when his ring flew off of his finger. He also said that there were about 15 of his friends searching with him for about an hour and a half, using their hands and a rake to no avail. I told him I would come right away, and was on my way.

I got to the court, and Julian came right over to show me the area where he believed the loss occurred. He showed me what had happened, and I told him I would get right on it. I began my first pass, and got a bottle cap. A few swings more, and I had Julian’s ring in my scoop; about 3 minutes total. He was so surprised, and his friends could not believe it. They had scoured that area for 1 1/2 hours, and I had it within minutes. It is so important to call someone right after the loss to increase the chances of a recovery, please don’t wait. It was awesome to see all the shared joy that afternoon; two thumbs up!

iPhone Lost at Venice Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

Was doing a little metal detecting today at an unfortunately well groomed beach. When I got there the sand looked as though it had been gone over with a dragged 2×4 it was so smooth. I wanted to do a little dry sand detecting, but after a few hours and very little to show, I decided to head back to the parking lot. On my way a couple of young ladies came up to me and asked if I had a metal detector (which I happened to be carrying at the time). After I showed it to them, they explained that one of them had lost her iPhone the night before, right in the towel line. I told them how the beach had been groomed early in the morning and it was highly unlikely that the phone was still there. That is when they told me that it was showing up there on the Find My iPhone App. When they showed me I decided to help them out.

We walked over, and they showed me where they had been the previous night, so I began my search with them explaining what they had been doing. I searched everywhere they showed me with no results. They then told me they had to leave, and would probably have to get a new phone. As they walked away, I am thinking, “Wait it is showing it is still here”. I kept up my search, I had not gotten their number or any other information, but continued on. I got nothing anywhere they had showed me, so I started moving out of the box, expanding my search area. I was actually out about 50 feet from the original position when I got an overload signal in my headphones. I dug carefully with the scoop so as not to damage the phone if this was it, and there it was. I showed it to some of the people around who had helped her earlier in the day, and then the phone started ringing. It was the young lady who had lost the phone. Apparently they were able to see that the phone was now moving, and knew someone had found it. They asked me to drop it off at the Lifeguard station and they would pick it up later. The nice Lifeguard took my picture for me. Glad to have made another person’s day.

Unique Platinum Wedding Band Lost at Santa Monica Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

I received a call this morning about 9:00 AM, from a gentleman (who asks not to be identified) who lost his wedding ring earlier in the morning at the beach in Santa Monica. We discussed if he could be there to show me what happened, and he said he could, but that he had to leave to board a plane at 11:00 AM. I said I would leave immediately, and got to the area at about 10:30 AM, traffic being somewhat of a bear.

When he arrived, he showed me the spot he believed the loss to have occurred. He also said the ring had a unique identifier, a tiny ruby that was inserted in to the inner part of the band, that could not be seen unless the band was removed. I got to searching, and had his ring in my scoop by 10:15 AM, with plenty of time left for him to go to the airport. He was very happy, and surprised that I was able to find it so quickly. It really helps us to help our clients if they are able to remember how and where the loss occurs. Glad to have made his day!

Diamond Engagement Ring Lost In Altadena, CA…Found and Returned.

Nathan called this morning needing help with his wife’s lost engagement ring. She had been playing with her dog, and throwing the ball to be retrieved, when with one throw both her engagement ring and wedding band flew off of her hand. Nathan said he heard the ring hit their car which was parked nearby. They proceeded to look in the area, when they found her wedding band in a bush near where the car was parked in the neighbor’s yard. They continued the search in and around where the wedding band was found, but with no success. His wife rented a metal detector the next day and proceeded to search again, Nathan then took up the search with the metal detector when he got home. He told me he could not believe all the metal that was in the yard, which was making the search harder for him with the rented detector. He said he put at least 20 hours of searching for the ring himself not to mention the time his wife and neighbors put in helping. He told me the grass was very high in the neighbor’s yard, and he suspected it was lost in the thick grass somewhere. He also said that the gardeners were scheduled to come today and mow the yard, so I knew I should hurry in order to beat them to the high grass, and arranged to leave immediately. Nathan was at work, so he was unable to meet me there, but gave me directions and photos to show where things had taken place.

I had a few delays on the way with some traffic and an accident, but finally got there at what I thought was a decent time. When I pulled up though, the gardeners were already there, and had mowed the yard, could they have already found it? My heart sank. I called Nathan to let him know, and he told me that he would come over at his lunch hour. This was a good thing, as I would be able to ask exactly what had happened. I searched the areas that he had pointed out to me, and finally searched the whole yard. I should have heard the ring, but nothing but some foil and pull tabs. Nathan showed up at lunch, and we went over what had happened. There was a definite trajectory of her throw that he showed me, so I concentrated in those areas that would possibly be affected; nothing again. I got out another detector that has a faster recovery, figuring that the ring could be getting masked by some iron in the ground, and began my search again. Nathan was helping with more possibilities, but nothing. I decided to search the yard again, and Nathan had to go back to work. I searched the yard again with no ring. I then decided that I could not remain in the box, so I stood in the line of trajectory, and backed up. I kept backing up, onto the neighbor’s porch, surely it would have been seen there. As I was standing there I looked left, the porch dropped off to the ground and there was a 6 tp 7 inch gap between the porch and the house about a foot deep. I saw something silver and round, but thought I was looking at half a buried pull tab. Upon closer inspection, it was the ring. There it was another 50 feet from where the wedding band had been found. Nathan’s wife must have thrown that ball with a Kershaw type of pitch, because it was a total of about 70 feet from where she had been standing. I sent Nathan a picture of the ring, asking if this was what it looked like, when he immediately called, and said he would come back in about 45 minutes. I told him I would wait. Needless to say he was very happy. I know that he and his wife will sleep well tonight, that’s what it is all about.

Wedding Ring lost in Malibu, CA Mountain Backyard…Found and Joyously Returned.

I was eating breakfast this morning when I noticed an email come in on my phone. I read that it was from Rosalie. She told how she had just gotten married yesterday, but her ring got lost in the backyard. She and her husband had their sweet little puppies as their ring bearers. The rings were tied, one around each of their necks with ribbons, and they were supposed to come to them during the ceremony to deliver the rings. The problem with puppies is that they are puppies, and they have a natural desire to play, and play they did. When they were supposed to deliver the rings, they began to rough house around the back yard; “wrestling” as Rosalie put it. When they finally got control of the dogs, they noticed that the ribbon on the one who had Rosalie’s ring had come untied, and the ring was gone. They and their wedding party searched for the ring, but to no avail. I got right back with her, and arranged to meet in a few hours.

When I got to their house they showed me the backyard, which was not very big, and explained what had happened. I had a few questions. There were some clumps of high grass, and a type of deep clover. It looked as if it would be a simple search, until I began, and realized that there was a lot of metal under the dirt. I searched with my standard coil with no luck, then switched to more of a sniper coil, and went over the yard again, still no luck. About this time I could see a look of resignation in Rosalie’s eyes, thinking the ring was gone for good. I then switched my program, to eliminate all iron from sounding and went over the yard again. This time I got a good signal next to one of the clumps of grass, put the pin pointer in, and it started screaming in my ears. I moved the grass around, and there was her ring. I looked around for her and noticed she had gone in the house, so I put the ring on my pinky finger, and put all my gear away. I then went over and knocked on the door. Rosalie came over, and I told her that I have finished my search, at which time I could see a slight downcast demeanor come over her. At that time I then lifted my hand and showed her the ring stating that is because I found the ring. Needless to say, there was instant joy emblazoned all over Rosalie’s face, as she exclaimed to her new husband how I was able to find her ring. What pleasure to be able to bring such joy to people, and what a great day it was today!

I asked Steve if we should call off the search and he said he wasn’t ready to give up. I went back in the house, and had even called the jeweler to ask if they had a replacement ring in stock. A little while later Steve got my attention and I asked him if we should call off the search. He said “yes …. because I found the ring!” and a bright smile came across his face as I screamed “JEFF HE FOUND IT !!!!” I really couldn’t believe it — I was so surprised and thrilled! Steve is amazing, an expert at what he does, and he so clearly loves doing this – finding people’s treasures for them… You can see that the joy he brings to people is for him, priceless.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you Steve !
