Nick was enjoying a warm fall day in the intracoastal waters by Ponce Inlet when disaster struck! No he was not bitten by a shark or stung by a stingray but in his book it was almost as bad! As he was fishing off of the pier he felt his wedding ring come off of his finger and he watched as it fell into the salty water and quickly disappeared out of sight. He had heard of things like this happening to other people but he was stunned when the realization hit him that his precious wedding ring was now gone…and maybe even gone forever! And here it had happened to him.

Nick was determined to recover his lost ring and he and a friend spent the next two hours holding their breath and trying to dive to the bottom to feel around and by some miracle come up with his ring. Needless to say they were not able to find it and in the end gave up their search attempt. That evening though Nick went on line to seek help and some advice on what could be done in his predicament. And to his surprise up popped a story on theringfinders.com of my recent recovery of a lost wedding ring in St. Pete, Florida that resembled what had happened to him earlier that day. And after reading how I was able to reunite that ring with the distraught young man, Nick felt he should give me a call.

It was Saturday and I was free to respond ASAP and two hours later I met with Nick and he graciously gave me a hand hauling all my gear down to the waters edge. As I surveyed the situation I realized again that I had a fairly steady current caused by the out going tide to contend with and by tying my kayak off to one of the pilings and by staying close to the base I then would be able to thoroughly search the exact area where Nick said it fell into the water. Actually Nick had wisely put a small notch in the railing where he was standing the moment his ring came off and thankfully it was only two feet out from the piling below. As I slowly descended to the bottom I was surprised that the visibility was barely one foot with a fair amount of silt and sand moving across the bottom. My first target was a small metal file off of a toenail clippers and my next signal was a shallow one. As I eased myself closer to see if I could visually identify what had caused my Pulse Dive scuba detector to sound off so loudly I caught a glimpse of something circular and reaching out to retrieve the item I felt the unmistakable feel of a gold ring! Again I prayed a prayer of thanksgiving to God for allowing me to find Nick’s lost ring so quickly! What a thrill it was to be able to hand his ring to him and see the joy and happiness on his face! And thanks Nick for giving me a call and for allowing me to help you!

Brandon and his father in law were enjoying a guys day out fishing under Johns Pass bridge when all of a sudden Brandon hooked a nice size red fish and managed to get it up onto the dock. The next challenge was to secure the fish for a decent photo and in the process Brandon got a bunch of fish slime on his hand. So what is ones natural instinct when your hand is covered in slime? You shake your hand in hopes that the slime will go sailing off, but more than slime went flying! Brandon was shocked when he felt his wedding ring slip off of his hand and doubly shocked when it landed out in the water. He could not believe what just happened and the thrill and excitement of catching a nice fish disappeared as the reality of what just took place started to sink in. The water was way to deep for Brandon to try his hand at recovering it and actually it was close to 17 feet deep with lots of rocks and concrete boulders and sand and a fairly swift current on top of it all.

This vacation was a much needed one for Brandon and his wife and in-laws as he had to miss last years special vacation due to his military deployment. And having been married for only two years he was having a very hard time dealing with the loss of his wedding ring and having to end their vacation on that bitter note. Later that evening Brandon was looking online for some help and typed in “Underwater ring searching” and up came theringfinders.com! Most all members of theringfinders can search yards, parks and shallow water ways but only a few of us are scuba certified and that was definitely what Brandon was needing. It was a two and a half hour drive to Johns Pass in St. Pete, Florida and after obtaining the proper permission we met and proceeded to set up on the dock under the bridge. I then took two PVC poles that I joined together in order to drive down into the bottom to mark the center of the dive area. Brandon said his ring could be in a 20 foot square area and I was hoping to somehow mark the bottom. Unfortunately the PVC pole was 4 foot short plus the bottom was very rocky with small areas of sand here and there. So I opted to follow one of the dock pilings to the bottom and then with my back to the piling I made my way along the bottom using my Nokta/Makro-Pulse Dive, handheld metal detector to scan for Brandon’s lost wedding ring. Right away it was obvious that it would be difficult as the concrete had rebar in each large block and the detector was picking up all kinds of signals. I slowly made my way forward, barely being able to see what was in front of me. I determined to check each signal and found some fishing sinkers and other large objects. Being the ring was lost the day before it seemed likely that it would not be buried very deep in the sand. For 15 minutes I scanned all around until I came to two large chunks of concrete and as I scanned over the top I noticed a small area of sand and it gave a sharp signal. I swam closer to see what it was and I could barely make out a small circular shaped object. As my hand closed over the item it was obvious that it was a ring. I had a hard time containing myself and let out an underwater scream of Praise!! I slowly ascended to the top and stuck my hand out of the water with the ring on my pinky finger. Brandon’s father in law was videoing with his Gopro and Brandon was in total shock! He could not believe it was his ring and asked me what kind of markings it had on it. I told him and he still seemed dubious!

How I thank God for allowing me to find Brandon’s lost wedding ring and for keeping me safe during the whole ordeal!

Chris was just getting started on a relaxing hike in the Moses Creek Conservation Area and with all the warm weather and rain the mosquitos have been out in record number this year. As he was walking along he felt something biting him on the back of his left calf and he instinctively swatted at it and as his hand glanced off of his leg he felt and saw his wedding ring go sailing into the thick grass and bushes. He instantly dropped his backpack and began looking through the brush hoping desperately to find his ring. An hour passed and then two and still Chris could not locate his lost wedding ring. He decided to go home for a break and eat some lunch and then he returned to the very spot and continued searching the thick tangle of palmettos and brush. Another two hours passed and no ring! Dejected and discouraged Chris went home and began searching for the nearest place to purchase a metal detector. He decided to order one on line but it would take 5 to 7 days to arrive in the mail and he was anxious about not having his ring and wanted to do something more about finding it sooner. Another search led him to theringfinders.com and after reading some of the success stories he opted to give me a call. Chris explained what happened and the next day I met him at the trail head and armed with my trusty Garrett ATMax metal detector we set off down the path to the exact spot where he last saw his ring. It was quite obvious where he lost it because of all the trampled down brush and bushes. I set up my metal detector in Zero Mode, then ground balanced the machine and started searching along the edge of the trail working my way into the thicker brush. It became obvious that swinging a metal detector would not work effectively so we decided to step on the bushes and by bending them over it would allow me to swing my coil over each area. It took 15 minutes until I got a repeatable signal that had promise. Peering into the thick tangle I had to use my Garrett “carrot” pin pointer to actually locate Chris’s lost ring. Chris was elated and overjoyed to have his wedding ring back on his finger and as we walked back to our vehicles we talked of metal detecting and the joys and thrills of finding lost treasure!

Lost wedding ring in yard, Lakeland, Fl….Found with a metal detector!

Dave was needing to get some brush cleared along the back side of his property and spent the good part of a day cutting and hauling branches out to the front of the house where the garbage truck could pick it all up. Every now and then he would remove his gloves and wipe the sweat from his brow or take a nice long drink of cold water, and then go back to work. On one occasion as he removed his gloves he felt his ring slip off of his finger and he quickly retrieved his ring and slid it back where it belonged. But as he was finishing up his work he looked at his left hand and saw that his ring had come off again so he tipped up his glove to shake out his ring but this time his glove was empty! He began looking the yard over, thinking he could easily find it but after an hour of combing thru every possible place he could think of—NO RING! The thought of finding it with a metal detector seemed like the most logical thing so he went out and bought a lower end model and started searching the yard from back to the front and along the sides. Dave was determined to find his ring and then it slowly began to dawn that maybe it had dropped into the canal at the back side of the property. A week went by and Dave realized he needed more help and that led him to one of my stories on theringfinders.com web site.

It was a two hour drive to Dave’s home and it was threatening to rain big time but after hearing his story I felt there was a good chance of being able to find his ring so off I went. After arriving and surveying the yard I set up my Garrett ATMax metal detector and went to work. (A few days earlier Dave had a chain link fence installed along the canal–so that was the most challenging part. With the metal fence and the drop off into the canal!). With the sun starting to set I turned my attention to the front of the house where Dave had hauled all the debris. I decided to start by the front door and follow the sidewalk down to the mailbox when I got a loud, sharp signal that showed two inches deep on my display and low and behold there was Dave’s lost wedding ring–just barely visible under the grass. Dave was putting his two little ones to bed at the time so I texted him a short “I found your ring!”

Whenever I am called to help someone look for a lost valuable I always ask my family and my parents, who are 88 and 87 years old, to pray for me. I assure people that God knows exactly where their item is hiding and He just needs to put my coil over the top of it. Again I thanked God for allowing me to find Dave’s lost wedding ring—just in time for their 7th year anniversary!

Lost gold wedding ring in surf, New Symrna Beach, Fl….found with a metal detector!

Mike was enjoying a beautiful day at the beach, playing in the warm ocean water with his children when he felt his wedding ring slide off of his finger! He had lost some weight recently but he never thought his ring would come off that easy. Thankfully Mike made a good mental note of where he was out in the water as he lined up with the north end of the Moontide Condo building and he also noted what time of the day it was which also proved very important. They immediately started searching thru the sand and running their fingers along the bottom desperately hoping to find his lost ring but after a good while they finally gave up. Mike was very discouraged as he had never lost his wedding ring in 13 years and now to have it gone so suddenly…it was very upsetting! Then a friend of his, also named Mike, mentioned hearing about a group of metal detecting specialists that help people find their lost jewelry called theringfinders. That was wonderful news and within the hour he gave me a call and explained his situation. It was evening and the tide was coming up and I assured Mike that according to the information he gave me, the best time to conduct a search would be the following day just before low tide. Mike was a bit concerned that his ring would be washed out to sea but after hearing that rings usually stay in the same area where they are dropped he agreed to meet me on the beach at 12:30pm the next day.

I met Mike and his dear family and we walked out onto the wet sand and soon I had my 8 flags in position and started my methodical grid search. My first target brought everyone to their feet and as they anxiously walked out to see what I had found, I raised a small piece of wire and assured them there may be more wire and bottle caps and coins, etc… On my 8th pass I got a strong signal with my waterproof Whites TDI Beach Hunter metal detector and in the first scoop there was Mike’s lost gold wedding ring! I put it on my finger and waved to the family indicating I had found a ring! They were all thrilled and we were high fiving each other as we made our way up the beach. (I always tell people that I have my family praying that I would find their ring and that God knows exactly where their precious item is and that He would put my coil over it. And today He did just that!).

Lost wedding ring in swimming pool, Longwood, Fl….Found and Returned to owner!

Shawn and her husband are planning to move to another house and before they say good bye to their home in Longwood they desperately want to find his wedding ring which slipped off of his finger while swimming in the pool. Apparently the “pool guy” had not been doing his job very well and the water had turned a chalky white and visibility was only a foot or two. And neither Shawn nor her husband could hold their breath long enough to search the deeper part of the pool with their goggles.

Since they were going to be moving out in a few days they were getting very anxious about not being able to find the custom made lost wedding ring and that led them to do an online search for someone to help them. Theringfinders.com came up and after reading a few of my successful recovery stories Shawn decided to give me a call. (You see, most of my requests to find lost items are usually to search in yards, parks, beaches, lakes and places like that and the saying “Like shooting fish in a barrel” came to mind! But of coarse every search I have been on there is always some sort of challenge involved and many times it ends up being more difficult than first imagined.)

So that same day I was able to meet Shawn and as I surveyed the pool I settled on using my scuba tank and 50 foot Gator Gill hose along with my mask, fins, weight belt and flashlight. I entered the pool and slowly sank to the bottom making my way along one side while shinning my light along the bottom hoping to catch a glimpse of gold. I swam to the deep end and there were leaves and debris on the bottom and I carefully went thru each pile trying not to stir everything up. Shawn said her husband’s ring was rather wide so there was no fear that it could slide down the slits in the drain. I slowly circled the drain making my way in wider circles and BINGO!, there was the lost custom made ring just sitting there waiting to be found! I surfaced and made my way to the shallow end and began to shine my light into the house and Shawn came out–all excited and all smiles!

I thank God for allowing me to be a help to this young couple and now their story can continue and they do not have to worry about leaving their wedding ring behind!

Boyd gave me a call and asked what the chances were of finding a lost i-phone in a lake. After hearing his story and getting a bit more information on the how, when and where…I decided to gather up all my gear and give it the ol “college try”!

Boyd’s wife, Elizabeth wrote this…”It is so nice to be able to text you from my miraculously working phone! Here is my review of your services. Mike is a Methodical Miracle Worker! I dropped my phone in a lake in a paddle boarding mishap. While I knew the approximate area where my phone was, the aquatic vegetation and algae were extremely thick, rendering visibility very difficult. After five days of searching to no avail, I knew that we needed to call in a professional–and that is exactly what Mike is! Upon his arrival, I was immediately impressed with his careful, intentional approach; he uses high-quality, specialized equipment and takes care to search the area deliberately. Despite this being an objectively difficult task–my phone was a “needle in a haystack,” buried in a fairly large area with very thick vegetation and varying depths of water–Mike kept a positive, professional attitude in every moment. During my search I used a 5 foot by 20 foot pvc submersible grid that allowed me to thoroughly cover the thick vegetation while pushing and forcing my 5 and one half inch Pulse Dive hand held metal detector/pinpointer through the weeded lake bottom. I also used my 50 foot hose and regulator by Gator Gill and floated my scuba tank on my small kayak. It took a good two hours of searching but thank God we were successful in the end! Lost large gold wedding ring, New Symrna Beach, Fl…..Found in ocean and returned!

Kim was relaxing at New Symrna Beach with her family and was especially enjoying the warm tidal pool area! She was in knee deep water and was pushing herself around–alligator style–using her hands to pull and push her way along and then “IT” happened! She felt her wedding ring come off of her finger and before she could blink, her ring disappeared into the sand below the water. She stopped immediately and called out for help and in an instant she was surrounded by a group of family and new found friends all wanting to help. They all walked around bent over here and there intently looking into the shallow water, hoping to catch the glimmer of gold! They searched for a while and then slowly began to realize the futility of looking for such a small ring in that sort of environment. Kim was distraught because her wedding ring was actually made up of various family hand-me-down rings that were used to make her one-of-a-kind ring.

Later on that day Kim posted on Facebook about her loss and someone recommended a very specialized group of metal detectorists that actually help people find their lost jewelry. So Kim decided to look up theringfinders.com and up popped my name and one of my stories. She promptly gave me a call and I decided to try and look real early the next morning just after low tide to see if I could find her ring. But I was a bit too late, as low tide was at 4:30am and sunrise was at 6:30 two hours after low tide. I spent an hour and a half looking and as I dug each target, Kim’s heart would soar and then plummet as I revealed a variety of items. As I exited the water, Kim acknowledged that I gave it a noble effort and had all but resigned herself to accepting the sad realization that her ring would not be found. (I knew that later in the evening there would be another low tide and I assured her that I was coming back at 3:00pm to chase that low tide out and cover the tidal pool area once again…and much more thoroughly!). That was wonderful news to Kim’s ears and a blessing to her hurting heart. Earlier, while Kim was anxiously watching me search, a friendly lady stopped and asked what I was looking for and Kim, with tears running down her face, explained her dilemma. The dear lady asked if she could pray for Kim and right there on the beach they bowed their heads and prayed together. Kim told me later that she immediately felt peace and a calmness come over her.

I returned later on that day two hours before low tide and the tidal pool where Kim was swimming was very obvious and now I began another grid search making sure I covered every inch of water. It took only 30 minutes to hear that sweet, sharp sound of gold! I motioned to Kim with a big thumbs up and I could see the emotions and tears of joy flooding over her and I silently thanked God for answering the prayer of a dear stranger just passing by!

Alicia was enjoying a relaxing day at Disappearing Island with friends and as she was swimming she somehow felt her small gold ring come off of her pinky finger. She tried grabbing it as it fell thru the water but to her horror it vanished in the soft sand at her feet. She desperately tried feeling in the sand, running her fingers back and forth but her precious ring just seemed to disappear!

This small gold ring was very special to Alicia as it was a gift to her when she was 12 years old from her mother and she has worn that ring every day for the last 23 years, until now. The location where she lost the ring was on Disappearing Island at Ponce Inlet in north New Smyrna Beach. And it is a very popular place for the boaters to park and enjoy the calmer waters and especially at low tide. During high tide the island is quite small but during low tide there is plenty of area for boats to park and especially on weekends the island is lined with boats of all sizes.

I made plans to meet Alicia at the Smyrna Dunes Park and we each brought our own kayak and with my Whites TDI Beach Hunter metal detector, scoop and other essential gear we set out across the busy inlet water way. It took a bit of figuring as Alicia texted her friends and had them each send a pin on a google map photo of where they had anchored the boat and where they would have been swimming the day she lost her ring. Alicia was worried about me being able to find her lost ring but I assured her that if she could put me in the general area where she was swimming then there was a good chance of actually finding her lost ring. So we pulled our kayaks up onto the beach in the 95 degree heat and I set about my grid search going from the wet sand and out into the water and back again, dragging one foot to mark my trail so I could actually overlap each pass so as not to miss one inch of sand. (The day she lost her ring she was in waist deep water at high tide and today we were there just before low tide so my target area was the wet sand out to knee deep water.) After an hour and a half and only digging up bottle caps, pull tabs and other miscellaneous junk I was needing a water break and while talking to Alicia we determined I had gone far enough on the one end of the beach and now I needed to go in the other direction. Alicia was feeling a bit useless and asked me several times what she could do to help me in the search. She offered to cover each hole I dug and tried to assist in finding the hidden target after I would dig a scoop of sand and dump it on the ground. After a while I tried to encourage her that the best thing she could do was “Pray” as I assured her that God knew exactly where her ring was hiding and that He would just need to get me over the top of it with my coil for us to find it. It truly is a matter of inches, as Chris Turner always says, and finally there in ankle deep water I got a faint signal and as the sand drained out of my scoop I could see a small gold ring nestled in the bottom. I motioned for Alicia to come over and look at what I just found and I will never forget the look on her face! The joy and relief and happiness all mixed in with thankfulness!

Lost gold ring in Lake Killarney, Winter Park, Fl….Found and Returned!

Nichole called me about a special ring her boyfriend lost while swimming in a lake. Apparently Trevor dove off of a dock and as he hit the water he realized he had his gold signet ring on his pinky finger. After he surfaced he began treading water and carefully removed his ring and put it in his back swim suit pocket and reconnected the velcro flap. Feeling it was safe he continued to slowly swim around enjoying the cool water. He was in the water for only a few minutes and had to swim to a nearby boat that was parked at another dock in order to climb out of the water using the ladder. (Neither dock had a ladder!). As soon as he climbed out of the water he felt for his ring and it was gone. Trevor had actually done a somersault in the water just before climbing out and as we talked, that spot seemed to be the obvious area where the ring came out of his pocket.

Thinking that he could retrieve his lost ring himself, he borrowed his brother’s scuba tank and BCD (vest) and tried to locate his ring but the bottom was so full of aquatic plants of various kinds.

Knowing that it is very difficult to search underwater when the visibility is very limited I opted to put together a submersible PVC grid frame measuring 5 feet by 20 feet. (I first saw this idea by another member of theringfinders who lives in Houston, Texas…a mister John Volek and also Jeff Morgan from Seattle, WA. gave me some extra tips on putting it together…thank you gentlemen!). This apparatus really is a game changer when doing underwater searches and I experienced it first hand!

I met Trevor at his apartment complex and loaded up all my gear on my handy beach fishing cart and we headed to the lake. It took a little while to get all set up but by 11:00am I was in the water and descending to the bottom. I could not believe just how thick the weeds and growth were and there was absolutely no way for me to use my Tesoro Tiger Shark metal detector! So I opted to use my 6 inch Pulse Dive Scuba Detector which proved to be the perfect tool for the job. Thankfully I had put a 12 inch foot on each corner of my PVC grid and that allowed me to inch my way along as I pushed and shoved my small hand held detector in and through the mass of weeds. It took me over an hour just to cover the grid inside and along the outside and I was getting very tired and plus I had not found Trevor’s lost ring. I surfaced to get a drink and rethink why Trevor’s ring was not in the target area…where he had done the somersault. We stood on the dock talking about the details of how he dove in the water and promptly put his ring into his back pocket and I repeated my earlier question about there being no holes in his pocket….and I actually leaned back and looked at his pocket and low and behold there was a factory made button hole slit…to let water out! Trevor was shocked as he had assured me his pockets had NO HOLES! Bingo! We had us a new search area! He showed me exactly where he dove into the water, where he surfaced and where he was when he put the ring in his back pocket. So I moved the PVC grid and within 20 minutes I had Trevor’s lost gold ring in my hand! What a relief and thrill it was to present Trevor with his special ring! Again I thanked God for directing me and giving me success and encouraged Trevor not to swim with his ring on! Lost something? Call ASAP!
