I received a text last night from Maura about a lost gold cross. I gave Maura a call to get some more information and was told that her mother had lost a gold cross that was a wedding gift from her father who had passed away recently.  Her mother had it on when she left the house to visit the cemetery but when they got there her sister realized the cross was gone when they went to untangle the chains. It was thought that the cross could be in the backyard, the car or the cemetery. The cemetery posed two problems – one it closed at 8 pm and it was getting late; two – I would need permission to go into the cemetery with a metal detector. We agreed to meet this morning at 8am and Maura was going to try to get in touch with the cemetery to explain the situation and get permission.  As a rule of thumb I never go near a cemetery with my metal detector but this was a different circumstance – however another twist was it is Memorial Day and there could be increased traffic and I did not want to appear disrespectful.

I met Maura, her mom and her brother-in-law at the house. I checked the car first with the scope, no dice. I went into the backyard and looked around the porch, again I came up empty. I searched around the side and front of the house just in case the cross was lost getting in or out of the car and nothing. Maura still had not been able to get in contact with the folks from the cemetery but we were going in hopes of maybe finding someone there.

We pulled into the cemetery and low and behold they were cutting the grass…well this was good…and bad. We could hopefully get permission but did they cut where I needed to look?!? By the time we parked and got out of the cars the cemetery worker was zooming away on his mower. Maura went to try and talk to him and I followed her mother up a brick pathway toward the grave so I could have a look around. I was a few feet behind her mother intently looking around when all of a sudden…in the middle of the path…was the cross! Maura’s mother turned around and could not believe I had found it just laying there. She was so happy and relieved. Maura heard the commotion and came back over to find out the cross was recovered. They two of them were both so happy and relieved to have it back. Maura was in amazement as to how it was there on the path, she said that they had been up and down there several times looking and did not see it. Her mother had said that she had been praying to St. Anthony and I had been as well. Then Maura pointed out that the cross was found next to the grave of another person who was special to them. Coincidence, I think not, I believe there was some divine intervention and maybe multiple layers of it!! It was a pleasure to be able to locate the cross and return it and as always – great to meet kind and generous people.

So…I had just left my last customer to check out a lead on a place to metal detect when I received a phone call for another lost ring. This was wild because business had been pretty quiet lately. So I spoke to Jim who told me he lost his ring just a short time ago cutting his lawn. He sent me his address and as luck would have it he was only about 20 minutes away.

I arrived at Jim’s house and I was feeling much better about locating his ring. He had just lost it in his backyard and stopped mowing immediately. I grabbed my equipment and got started. While I had a lot less area to search it seemed to take me forever after finding the last one so quickly. In reality it took me about 10-15 minutes and I located it hiding in the cut grass. Jim was extremely grateful to have his wedding ring back and I was happy to help. As always it is great to meet nice and generous people like Jim and have a positive outcome!

Last week I received an early morning text “Good morning, Remember me. You found my wedding ring two yrs ago”. I had to sheepishly respond that I was sure I did but that I do not save customers in my phone. He told me it was Blaize and I immediately remembered him – the lawn king!  I told him I did remember and  I was hoping it was just a nostalgic text but was guessing probably not. He responded – “I need your service again”. We talked on the phone and he had lost his wedding ring out working again. I had previously found his ring in near record time and I cautioned him that there was no guarantee I could replicate that, especially after he told me he lost it nearly a week ago at one of his jobs.  He did say he had a pretty good idea as to which job he lost it at and where.

So I met up with Blaize later that afternoon. We took a long walk back a large gravel driveway and then a turn; this was BIG yard. He told me he thought he must have lost it cleaning out the deck chute on the rider. He gave me an area and said I think it is here or maybe in that big clump of bushes or maybe in the clipping piles. I asked for his best guess…he said start in the bushes. So I walked over and started into the high grass and bushes and suddenly I hit a solid sound. I looked down and low and behold there it was. After looking at the area I had to search and the other uncertainties I was just as surprised as Blaize was elated. It was a heck of a stroke of luck to find it so quickly. We talked for a few minutes when someone stopped to request his services and I took off to check out a lead he gave me on a spot to metal detect. It was nice to see Blaize again; he is great to talk with and generous guy. Also just like the last time – the yard he was working on looked great so if your looking for a lawn service locally look up Blaizin Bladez Lawn Care!

I received a text from Josh that his wife had lost a very special stud earring in their backyard. She had been outside holding a child when the earring was dislodged from her ear. I told him that I would be more than happy to come out and look for it.

I was a bit nervous as I had only been out searching for an earring once before and struck out. Everyone says earrings and small chains are pretty difficult. I arrived and Josh showed me the area. He had got a detector and searched himself to no avail. I got started and almost immediately I got a good sound even though it was a bit sketchy. I took out my pinpointer and there hidden in the grass was the earring. I think I was almost as surprised as Josh at how quickly things worked out. It was a nice recovery and as alway it was good to meet another kind and generous client!

One Cooooool(d) Find! Lost key fob – Found in Harrison City, PA (near Pittsburgh)

I received a text from Brenda asking if I could look for her key fob which was lost in the snow. Her husband had been shoveling the driveway the day before and it fell out of his hoodie pocket. She did know if it was in the snow around the driveway or down in the sewer at the end of the driveway.

It was a balmy 18 degrees on the car thermometer when I arrived…almost warm enough for shorts and to work on my tan. I got straight to work and did not find much of anything…a piece of foil, a paperclip, and some type of tiny pieces of what looked like a chain but no key fob. The driveway was a problem as there metal all around the perimeter, so much so that I set down the machine and took out my pin pointer and checked the entire area with it.

After about an hour Brenda came out and was very disappointed I was unable to locate it. We talked for a few minutes and I told her at some point they might find it after the snow melted if it was not in the sewer. As we were talking she informed me with that being the only key fob for the car the dealership would have to remove the computer to make a new key and it was going to be an eye-popping amount of money. She thanked me for coming out and gave me my travel fee and a bit extra (very kind but not necessary). I decided that on my way out I would look one more time…I made it back up to the area of the steps that lead to the side of the house where I had found the foil earlier. I had another sound, guessing it was more foil I reached back in. Low and behold I found the key fob.

I went to the porch and rang the doorbell and returned the key fob to Brenda. I was relieved to have found it which would save her a pile of money and aggravation and she was just so thankful. I am glad I checked again and I had thought I had done a very thorough search prior to finding it, but I had to remind myself of one of the cardinal rules of metal detecting – always go back over your hole to make sure there is nothing else in it. I guess that holds true even in the snow! I was happy to be able to help and as always it was nice to meet another kind and generous person like Brenda.

I received a text from a client who stated her husband had lost his wedding band in a field by their house. We spoke on the phone and set up a time for me to come out. It sounded like a pretty standard search, this time of year I worry about the amount of daylight I have when I go out in the afternoon. There were two things about this search that struck me…one was the ring was stainless steel and the other was this was one house away from a previous client.

So as with all of our searches there are the stories that go along with them and this one was pretty cool. First, it wasn’t my previous client that recommended me, it was her grandma…I got a nice chuckle out of that (Thanks Gram!). Secondly, was the story about the ring and why it was made of stainless steel. Jocelyn’s father was a machinist and he made the ring. Then I was informed that the pastor who married them had passed away and that their wedding was the last marriage that he blessed. So therein was the story behind the ring, the special extras that make this wedding ring extra special!

Next came the ride in the side by side, now I was getting a bit nervous. I thought this was going to be by the house but then we were driving up into a huge farm field across the road. On the way up Johnny explained he was tossing pumpkins in the field when he felt the ring slip off. He said it slid off when he was moving his arms backwards. He dropped me off and I marked my starting point with my shovel and a large tree limb I pulled from the wood line. I searched for a long time back and forth, when suddenly I realized – it is hunting season dummy, where is your orange…too late. I hoped my bright blue hat would be enough that I wouldn’t be confused with a big buck.  Then I found the pumpkins he tossed further out from where he left me off. I also found a large stainless steel nut they had tossed in the field when they had been looking with a metal detector. I picked it up and put it in my pocket for later. So daylight was waning and I started getting more nervous and was planning in my head for coming back out on Sunday to look again. I took a break, got out my phone and said the St. Anthony prayer for lost items. Then I put my phone away and got back at it, this time picking up the pace. I decided I would quickly search below my starting point. So I began going the other way from the tree branch I placed as my marker and within about 3 passes BAM…I found it (Thanks St. Anthony). It was starting to get dark and a huge sense of relief set it. I gathered up all my things and walked back down to the house. I sent a text saying I was done. Johnny came back and he was guessing I did not find it. Before letting the cat out of the bag, I told him that I did find something and handed him the big stainless steel nut. Then I told him there was something else and returned his ring. He was convinced I hadn’t found it and gave up because it was dark; so he was surprised and happy to have his ring back. It was great to meet more kind and generous people like Johnny and his wife and keeps me looking forward to the next client(s) and the next find.

Metal Detecting Service – Gold Wedding Band – Found in Moon Township (Pittsburgh, PA)

Why rent a metal detector when you can get a trained operator with top of the line equipment at the same time…I am also pleased to announce I am beginning to search for lost rings in vehicles!!

I was contacted by Tom who lost his ring doing yard work. He was throwing some sticks and vegetation over an embankment when his ring went flying. We made arrangements and I went out to see what I could find. It was not too bad of an area to search with a lot of leaves, trees and grass clippings. I started to look and did not find it where Tom thought it might be. I then started to expand my search area. Tom in his kindness gathered some of the sticks and things and moved them into a pile a short distance from where he thought his ring would be found before I had arrived. I then went through that pile of stuff and beyond. It was on the other side of the items that Tom had cleaned up hoping to give me a better chance at finding it. He could not believe how far the ring actually traveled. I was happy to have recovered the ring and Tom was elated to have it back. Another successful day for another kind and generous client.

This one starts out with the proverbial “needle in the haystack”…. I received a text from a client who was at a pumpkin patch and her husband had just lost his wedding band playing in a hay area. While looking for the ring a nearby patron said hey – my mom lost her ring a while back and a guy came out and found it…let me get you his number (thank you for the referal – small world!!). So unfortunately I was unable to head out that night, luckily the farm was closing soon and the clients had secured permission for me to come out first thing in the morning.

I went out the next morning and met Jennifer and Brian who showed me where the ring was lost. There was a large shed with hay bales stacked up and hay all over the floor. I began to search right way…I was told I could search but only until they opened. It was a very rainy day and I was informed I could take my time because of the weather. Fortunately it was not long when I hit that sweet sound of a gold wedding band.

Brian and Jennifer were surprised as to where it was located when I found it. It was on the opposite side from where they had been looking. I was happy to return his wedding band and as always it is great to meet kind and generous people. Also – a big shout out to Hozak Farms for allowing me to come out and search for the ring – Thank you!

Who says there is never a ring finder around when you need one??? LOL. I was driving home and I live close to a golf course so as I was passing by I saw a friend’s car and pulled in to say hello. It looked like he and a few other people were looking for something…low and behold – a lost ring. He started laughing and said your ears must have been burning. I got out chatted for a few but I did not have my equipment and the person who lost the ring was not there. I told my buddy – I will be back to find it in the morning.

So the next morning I went back and met with Dean. He was taking his jacket off and his ring got caught in the sleeve and flew off. He was in a parking spot right next to the driving range and the ring was somewhere in the grass. I immediately got to work. After about 45 minutes I located the ring. I dont always have the opportunity to do it but I measured…the ring flew 18 feet away from where he was when he lost it.

Dean was very happy to have his ring back and I was glad to have been able to help!

I received a text from Cathy that she had lost her mother’s ring in her car and asked me to call her. I called her and she said her ring fell off in the car and she could not find it. She saw it go flying back behind the driver’s seat. It has been a while since she lost it and had vacuumed the car and searched to no avail. She said their last night in Myrtle Beach on vacation she ran into a member of the ring finders who told her about us and what we do. He did not have a scope with him so he told her to check the website when she got back.

I went out the same day, got there and started to look under the driver’s seat immediately since it was the last place the ring was seen. I started checking the vents when I noticed the carpet under the vents was loose. I then started to check under the carpet, it was a few minutes later I found what I thought to be Cathy’s ring. I know that sounds a bit crazy but in full disclosure this was only my second time using an endoscope and I am finding out that things can look a bit different or deceiving. I asked Cathy to look and she said yes because she recognized the design. Then I realized…finding it in the car is only half the battle…you have to retrieve it too. I informed Cathy that I would try to get it out but if I could not she might have to seek a mechanic. Luckily her husband was able to put the seat the whole way up and I was able to get a hold of it. It was a bit touch and go because it was tight and I didn’t want to drop it and have the ring go further down into the car, but in the end I got it out!! Cathy was so happy to have her ring back as it meant so much to her since it had belonged to her mother. I was glad I was able to help. It was truly a pleasure to meet such kind and generous people like Cathy and her family. It was also great to get my FIRST find using an endoscope.

P.S. – If you are still reading this there are a few people I want to thank in addition to Cathy for calling me. First I’d like to thank the unknown ring finder in Myrtle Beach or else I would not have had this opportunity. Then our fellow ring finder, Rod Greene…he lent me his scope (don’t worry I am getting my own…lol). I know this might sound like an Oscar or Grammy speech but I am almost done…LOL. I also want to thank fellow ring finder Brian Rudolph. The first time I was out searching a car I reached out to Brian because he has tons of success. Although that search did not pan out he gave me some good pointers and encouragement to keep searching cars. So thanks to all you guys for your help and support!!
