I got a text from Taylor asking if I Wheeling, West Virginia was too far. I thought about it and said to myself if the circumstances are good for a recovery I would make the trip. We talked and his wife had taken off her rings while cutting the lawn and pulled something out of her pocket while mowing. When she had finished her engagement ring was still there but her wedding band was gone. Taylor said he had gotten a cheap metal detector and tried to find the ring to no avail. The only thing that worried me was that the ring was lost a few weeks earlier and they had obviously cut the grass a few times since then.

So in the end I saddled up for a long drive to West Virginia. Upon my arrival I met Taylor and got started. I went through the whole back yard and nothing. I did find an old foil drink top tucked way down in the thick grass. It was well hidden from sight and gave me some extra hope/confidence that the ring could be entwined deep in this lush lawn. On to the the front and now the fun began. For some reason the back yard was quiet as an empty church but the front was chirping like crazy. I started adjusting my frequency and sensitivity. I got a little relief but not much. I kept moving trying to listen for a good repeatable signal amidst all the other noise. Suddenly I got one…I put my pin pointer into the grass and it started screaming. I was looking but could not find anything, then suddenly I caught a glimpse of the ring deep within the grass. Score! I sent Taylor a text with a picture of the ring and walked back to my truck to start putting my equipment away.

Then Taylor and his wife Kate came out. They could not believe that I found the ring and were very happy. It was an absolute pleasure to meet them both, another pair of kind and generous clients, and of course it is always great when you are able to recover their lost ring!!

This latest recovery starts the way most of them do, I received a text from Troy stating he had lost his ring. He was at a city park playing with his kid when he went to bounce a ball and his ring flew off. When I talked to Troy he told me he heard it hit the cement and bounce. It was later in the day and I was going to be in the city the next afternoon. Troy was good with that but he went and got a metal detector so he could search himself in the meantime.

I arrived the next day and met Troy. He had been searching for the ring but to no avail. I told him I would do my best. Troy had a few things to do so he went back home. I started to search and being a city park as you can imagine it was very noisy with a lot of trash. I slowed down and tweaked my settings but nothing seemed to help. Eventually I went back to the car and switched to my smaller coil hoping the better discrimination might help. It had been more than a few hours of searching and I had kept expanding my search area. I was just about to give up when I got a hit and there it was. I am pretty sure I was over that same area with my big coil. Anyway, I felt great because I was about to toss in the towel.  I sent Troy a text that I found his ring. Then we spoke on the phone and he could not believe it. I made arrangements and we met and I returned Troy’s ring. He was very happy to have his wedding band back. As always it was great to meet another kind and generous client and be able to recover and return their lost ring.

I was contacted by Ryan’s wife that he had lost his wedding band at a ballfield. He had went out and tried to find it with a metal detector but was unable to do so. I could not head out immediately and then we got pushed back due to the ballfield being at a school. Finally we were able to meet up and Ryan showed me where he believed the ring was lost. I told Ryan it was a pretty standard search and he could do whatever while he was waiting for me to search. I had told him I brought a few different metal detectors and he asked if he could use one and search as well. Not my normal protocol but it was a large area and it could be done without the machines interfering with each other. I gave him a quick tutorial on how to use it. I only had one pin pointer and had kept it with me for the tall grass. I started at one end and Ryan started at the other. During the search we had a few false alarms where Ryan had a hit but upon further investigation it was not the ring. Then suddenly it was not a false alarm as Ryan hollered over with a big smile and his ring in his hand.

It was awesome that it was recovered and I told Ryan he might have a future as my wingman. He had sworn that he was over that area before with a detector. It is hard to tell as we all know this can be a game of inches but if he was it is also a testament to having the right equipment for the job. It was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and have the twist of him using some of my equipment to find his ring!

Maddie reached out to me after she lost her engagement ring when they were taking pictures in Frick Park. The ring was lost in some thick vegetation. A friend of hers had tried to locate the ring with a metal detector but was unsuccessful.

I arrived early the next morning and met her and her fiancé. She showed me where they had been and I got started. It was not too long and I found a quarter that they threw into the grass to try to find with the other metal detector. I jokingly gave it back to Maddie to return to her friend. I felt a little better that if the other detectorist missed a quarter they threw in there it was probably a good guess he would miss the ring. A few more minutes and I found her ring, almost exactly where she said it should be.

Maddie was extremely excited and relieved to have her ring back. As always, it was a pleasure to meet another kind and generous client and be able to return their lost ring!

I received a text from Gabrielle asking me if I could come out and look for another lost ring. I say “another” because she called me last year to look for a different ring she had lost. Unfortunately I was unable to find it. I agreed to come out but I had to wait as yet another snow was on its way.

The weather cleared and I was able to head out to search for the ring. She believed it was in the back yard where she had been cleaning up. It was a large area and I got started only to find a ton of targets. After I had been through the garden and yard areas twice I was convinced I was not going to find a ring on this trip either. As I was leaving I decided to detect my way to my vehicle, maybe I would dumb into the first ring I had been looking for. Suddenly I got a repeatable grunt and looked down – there was the ring she had most recently lost! Gabrielle had stepped out so I texted her that I found it. She could not believe I found it and that it was in the front yard. It was great to see a former kind and generous client and this time to return her lost ring.

1978 Gold Class Ring Found and Returned to Owner by metal detector specialist Brian Carpenter in Indiana, PA

I found this ring before the snow started to fall but had to wait until I was able to return the ring to its owner.

I had just put a new “SILVER” cherry picking program on my minelab manticore and was taking it out to test it. I decided to go to one of my spots I have hammered over the years as a true test. I started to comb the area and picked out a nickel on my first hole (the program does notch in nickel signals). I continued moving on and hit another solid 25 and figured it was another nickel. I turned my plug and to my amazement it was a gold 1978 class ring from the other side of the state. The bottom part of the ring was broken off but I was able to recover the small piece from the hole as well. I examined the ring and inside I found legible initials. From there in the field I got out my phone and googled the school district. A nice lady from the school answered but told me they could not help me. I was truly puzzled and I went back to detecting.

Once I got home I tried to locate a yearbook and initially was unable to do so. I did find an alumni page are reached out to one of the admins. He said he would help me. In the meantime I continued to search and did find a yearbook (finally!). I located the person I thought it was and conducted a google search and found contact information for the person. I sent them an email and then it was time to wait. After a short time the alumni site admin. confirmed my suspicions of the potential owner. Finally I received a response and they did lose their ring and until now had been a mystery as to how and where.

Unfortunately, returning the ring in person would not be possible. The owner lives on the west coast. So, at the owner’s request, I took a trip to the post office and mailed it back. While I love the reaction an in person return brings knowing I was able to locate the owner and do the right thing in returning it was more than enough.

I was contacted by Kai to inquire if I could find his ring after it was lost during an event at the university. He said he had lost it in a grassy area between some of the buildings the night before.

I arrived and looked at the area to be searched. Pretty standard grassy area and Kai was certain it was in a specific spot. I started to seach and within 10 minutes I was able to locate the ring in the grass. Kai was very happy to get his ring back and as always it was great to meeet another kind and generous client and recover his special keepsake!
