Mike called me last week and told me that his father lost his house in the palisades fire. He had a large bag of silver coins and several gold pocket watches that he was afraid were lost in the fire.  I assured him that there was still a chance that it could be recovered.  I met his father and his sister Wendy in the morning to follow them to the property.  It was a large property and there was a lot of debris  to remove. Wendy gave me some ideas of were her fathers desk was located and the bags of silver coins consisting of quarters dimes half dollars and silver dollars were supposed to be located under the desk. I raked shoveled and sifted for a couple of hours when finally a giant blob of silver emerged from the ashes.  most of the coins had melted together. the mass was over 10 pounds of silver but you could see the outline of some of the coins. I also found some loose silver coins that had not fused with the blob. I also recovered three gold pocket watches  two sterling silver antique cigarette cases and a very sentimental silver letter opener that wendy’s father had gotten as a gift when he went to Israel many years before with his parents. I must have returned over 200 silver coins to wendy and mikes father but he was just as excited about the letter opener from Jerusalem.  The whole family was nice,  grateful and a pleasure  to talk to and it was my privilege to  be able to help them.

Amy called to see if I could find a gold chain and charm that belonged to her son that was lost in the palisades fire. I met with her and began to sift through the ashes for about an hour when I found the special necklace . Amy said that was the most important thing she was looking for because it was a gift that she had bought for her son with his initial on it.

I received a call from Cliff who had lost his home in the Palisades Fire here in the Los Angeles area. His family had lost it all, but he wanted to try and find a watch that had been in his family for 4 generations, which had been handed down son to son, and he wanted to be able to do the same with his own son. We set a date and time to meet, as he had to get me through 2 National Guard checkpoints to get to his site.

When we arrived the property was like the many thousands all around, burned to the ground. He showed me where the ring had been, and there was anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rubble in the area. I began working through the rubble with my sifter plodding on, shovel full after shovel full, not finding the watch. Cliff had a scheduled appointment, and had to leave, so I stayed another 1 1/2 hours trying to find the watch with no luck. I sent him a text letting him know I was unable to find the watch, and that I was leaving before the curfew. Right as I was getting ready to leave I spotted a class ring at the edge of the search area, on top of some rubble. I sent another text to Cliff letting him know this, and it buoyed his hope, so he asked if I would be able to come back again. He let me know also that there was a revolver he would like to find that had been from a distant relative who had used it in the Civil War.

When I arrived the second time I went right to work in the area I had worked before, continuing to expand the search zone one shovel full at a time. Then after about an hour, I took two shovels of rubble, and on top of the second one, I saw the watch. It was completely destroyed, a real sad ending for the search. When I brought it to Cliff, he said that at least it won’t haunt him if he did not find it, not knowing if it made it through the fire. Next we started moving some of the metal that was covering the area where the gun had been, and set to work removing the big pieces of rubble to try to get to the gun. As I lifted a piece of roofing tile I saw the gun, and held it up for Cliff. Once again, the fire had taken it’s toll. At least Cliff had closure being able to find those items which meant so much to him and his family.

I got a call from Scott who lost his home and all the family’s possessions about two weeks ago to see if I could help him find his wife’s jewelry and his coin collection. Today was one of the first days that the property owners were allowed back to the Palisades since the fire began on January 7th. We met in Santa Monica. When I followed him into the first national guard checkpoint on PCH in the Palisades then had to go to through another sheriffs  checkpoint and wait one hour for an escort to the fired zone. After a quick explanation of the lost valuables I put on my protective gear and began the search with in two hours of sifting through the ash and debris I found at least 200 silver coins, then we moved on to search for his wife’s jewelry but the debris was larger and had to be tossed aside before I could start sifting again, within 45 mins time frame I found over 25 pieces of Scott’s wife’s jewelry consisting of rings, bracelets, chains, brooches, earings and a couple of jade pendants. Luckily I was able to use my 30 years of experience with fire recovery to help this nice but devastated family be reunited with some of their family heirlooms.
