Harry called about 5:30 PM the day before last, he had lost his platinum wedding ring while throwing a ball to his dog. He threw the ball, and his loosely fitting ring flew off of his finger. He and his friend watched as the ring hit the sand, then a wave washed over it, and it was gone in an instant. The tide was on the rise, and where it was lost, with the high surf, it would have been nearly impossible to do the search that night, so we arranged to meet the next afternoon at low tide.

When I got to the beach the wind was blowing with an extreme ferocity, and the wave action was strong. I put on my waders, knowing I would be getting in the water for the search. Harry and his friend James met me and showed me the area of the loss. I had brought 2 detectors down for the search. With the strong surf, there was a possibility the ring might have rolled when it hit, so I was going to search in the water to ensure a thorough search. I did my search of the area with a PI detector with no results. I then went over with a multi frequency VLF detector, again with no results. I wasn’t giving up, and because it had been a full 24 hours since the loss, I put the other 2 detectors away, and brought my best multi frequency VLF detector with a 17 inch coil down thinking the ring might have sunk into the sand further than the other detectors could reach, and performed another grid. I could see that Harry was getting discouraged. He even came to me ready to throw in the towel, but I told him I was going to complete a few more passes in the general area of the direction of the toss. Up, down, and up again, wait what was that tone, a sweet tone in the headphones. I dug once, dug again, and again, deep, very deep, and out of the hole after I kicked the sand aside was the beautiful shimmer of platinum. I looked at Harry, pointed to him, reached down, and lifted his ring out of the sand, to which he and his friend came running over in disbelief; we had been there close to 3 hours. It was a very happy day for Harry, and I was happy to be of help to him!

I was contacted last night by Linda. She had been at the beach with her 2 children enjoying the day. When they were ready to leave she realized her keys were gone, and she had to drive back to Phoenix, AZ. After looking unsuccessfully for her keys, she was able to find and contact me. I could tell she was very distraught at the thought she would be stranded in a strange place with her children, and told her I would be on my way immediately.

When I got to the beach it was already about 8:00 PM, but that does not make a difference, as I can search in the dark as well as the day. Linda led me out to the area where she and her children were playing. I asked a series of questions in order to narrow down the search area, and then began my grid. I was finding a lot of metal, bottlecaps, tin foil, etc. After about 7 passes, a really strong signal reverberated in my headphones. I dug, and could see something different in the scoop. I reached in and there were Linda’s keys. I held them up with my headlight shining on them, and she came running over with an overwhelming show of emotion and gratefulness. She went from despair to joy in an instant. What a blast to see this transformation occur!

Kathleen contacted me about her lost phone. She had lost it the day before at the beach while sitting in the sand. She had gone to the beach with her dog, and was sitting watching the waves, and when she got up, her phone came out of her pocket. It was too late when she realized it was gone. With something that big in such a high trafficked area, I don’t always have a lot of hope of a recovery after a full day of loss. Kathleen told me that the “Find My iPhone” app was telling her the phone was still there, so my hopes of a recovery were buoyed, and we arranged to meet for the search.

When I got to the beach, I met Kathleen, and she took me out to the spot where the loss occurred. She showed me where she remembered sitting, and I began my search. I covered the area without finding the phone, so she then thought she might have been sitting lower down the slope to the water. I figured the phone would have been covered by the previous high tide if lost there, and was wondering if it would have been sending a signal. I did the search down the slope, and got a good strong signal, dug, and about 4 to 6 inches down there was her phone, STILL WORKING! There had been at least 2 high tides to cover the phone, and it was still alive; amazing. Needless to say Kathleen was very happy to have her phone back, and I was happy to make her day.

While I was on my way to meet with Gibreel in the previous post for the lost iPhone, I received a call from Bryan who had lost his wedding ring just about an hour before. It sounded like a good possibility of a recovery, so I let him know that I had a search to do before I could get out to where he was to do their search, but that I would be there. He was fine with the arrangement, because he had something he had to do in the mean time. I found the iPhone, and was on my way to Bryan.

Traffic was good, and I was able to get to the beach at the arranged meeting time. What had happened, was that Bryan and his wife were on the beach enjoying the evening, when it started to rain. They hurried to gather up all of their belongings to not let them get wet, when during the process Bryan flicked his hand, and his ring was instantly gone. They searched for about an hour before they decided to look for someone to help them. I am glad I was available and close. When I got there they showed me the area, and I could see that they had performed a good tight grid in the sand during their search. He showed me where he thought the ring might have flown because of the motion of his hand, so that is where I began my search. The ring was not there, and I kept the grid going. After a few passes I entered the middle of their grid area when I got a good signal, and let them know I believed I had found the ring. After scooping out the sand, I scooped once more into the dumped out sand, and inside was Bryan’s ring. I got a big hug from his wife and a hearty handshake from Bryan. They had only been married for 8 months, so the ring had a pronounced sentimentality for them. What a great ending of the day!

I received an email from Gibreel about his cell phone he had lost playing football the day before at the beach. The phone came out of his pocket when he dived for a pass, and was instantly gone. He and his friends searched for over an hour without any success. I wasn’t too hopeful about the recovery because this beach is cleaned often by the county beach cleaning machines, but from everything he explained to me, I thought it was worth a try. We agreed to meet there in the evening.

I arrived before Gibreel, and walked out on the beach. As I walked out I could see the smoothed out sections of sand that showed the machines had been through the area. When he arrived and came out, I showed the sections of sand to him, and explained the possibilities of a recovery. I figured I was there, so I would do the search none the less. As I started my grid Gibreel began looking around as well. He then came back to me to let me know that he recognized a can from the night before. At this point I realized that the machines had not gone through in the morning but the day before, which bolstered my hope of finding the phone. I was finding numerous coins bottlecaps and other pieces of metal, then about 45 minutes into the search, I received a real strong and large signal, and when I dug, his phone popped up. He was so happy to have it back being a college student, and not having the ability to just run out and buy another phone. I was happy to make his day!

Mailbox Keys Lost in Yard in Newport Beach, CA…Found and Returned.

Eron contacted me about the keys to her new mailbox that had been lost in her front yard. She and her two year old son went out to get the mail, and on the way back to the house she let her son hold the keys. When they got back into the yard, she had to attend to something, and turned from her son for a minute, and when she turned back to him she noticed the keys were gone. She asked him where they were, and he told her he put them in a hole. She searched the grass for a couple of hours looking for where the keys might have been inserted into, but there was no hole in the area he was standing.

We arranged to meet, and when I got to the house, the grass was nice and groomed, and I could see no holes at all. I began my search, up, down, up, and down again, then I got the signal. I put in my pin pointer, and there in the deep thatch were the keys. The depth of the thatch, Eron’s son perceived as a hole. She was very happy to have the keys back. She did not want her picture taken, so you get mine.:-)

I got a call about 8:30 PM from Josh about his phone that he had lost earlier at the beach. He had been wrestling around with some friends with his phone in his pocket, and when they were done, the phone was gone. I got on my way immediately so as to do the search before the city beach cleaning machines come out to clean the beach.

When I got there Josh showed me the area, and I could see that he and his friends had been gridding the area by dragging their feet through the sand, but were unable to find the phone. I proceeded to grid the same area, and found that the phone was not there, so it was time to expand the search area. I went one way with no luck, then I began another grid in another direction, when I got a good long signal, put the scoop in, and his phone was in the scoop. Josh was very relieved to not have to buy a new phone!

Custom Black Belt Shaped Ring Lost in Yard in Santa Monica, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

I received an email from Barbara, asking if could help her find her husband’s ring lost in a yard a year ago. He had been throwing something to his grandkids when the ring flew off of his finger, and was gone. They never saw it again. I did not think it would be a problem as long as it was still there. She wanted to do the search on his birthday, and give the ring back to him as a present to surprise him. The ring was custom made, and he wore it as a symbol of his receiving his Black Belt as a youth, so it had great meaning and sentimental value to him.

When I got to the property, Barbara took me to the yard which was not very big, and I could see was very well manicured. There was not a blade of grass out of place, nor a leaf anywhere on the ground. I thought to myself that if it looked like this the day the ring was lost, how could they not see it, but began my search anyway. I got a good signal, and turned to the owner of the property (the grandkids father), and let him know that I would have to dig a small hole, which he was not pleased to hear, but gave me the go ahead. I dug the hole only to find a buried wire, which made him very nervous about me digging any more holes. He pointed me to another part of the yard that he remembered searching for the ring at the time it was lost. I conducted my search in that area, and got another good signal about 2 inches deep. I let him know that to recover this signal, I would have to dig again, he did not want me to, and I understood his worry, but let him and Barbara know, that the only way to find out if we had found the ring or not was to dig the signal, because I did not want to damage the ring. He finally relented, and I dug. When I flipped the plug of grass and dirt over, there in the dirt was the band of a yellow gold ring shinning in the sunlight. I pulled the ring and gave it to Barbara, needless to say, she was very happy to know that she was going to be able to surprise her husband with a wonderful birthday gift; truly a great day!

Three Diamond Rings Lost at Will Rogers State Beach, CA…Found and Happily Returned.

Last Sunday I got a call from a young lady who had taken her 3 rings (2 18K, and 1 platinum) off at the beach, and placed them on her towel. When she and her friends went to leave they picked up everything and walked off, forgetting the rings were on the towel. They went back and searched desperately for her rings after realizing what had happened, but could not find them. They called me about 6:00 PM to see if I could do a search for them. I said I would be happy to, and told them when I could be there, but they decided to search some more, before having me come out. Well they did not call me out for the search until about 8:30 PM, and I left right away.

I got to the area about 9:30 PM, but was unable to get parking because the streets shut down at 10:00 PM, so I had to park about 1 mile North and walk back. I got to the area shown by the directions they had given me, and started my search; it was just me and the beach at that time of night. By 11:00 I had her rings in my hand, and was able to text her of a successful hunt. We got together yesterday for the ring return, and she was very happy to have her rings back, one of which had been her mother’s. A great hunt!

Diamond Engagement Ring Lost in Van Nuys Park…Found and Joyfully Returned.

A week ago Monday I received a call from Megha; she had lost her engagement ring while celebrating the Holi Festival of Colors at a park the day before. She had been covered in colored powder from the festivities, and while trying to brush off some of the powder she with one flick of the wrist felt her ring fly off of her finger into the grass. She and friends and family searched all over for the ring, but were not able to find it. I told her that I could be there the next morning, but she did not have transportation to the park, so we had to wait until this last Friday to do the search. I was concerned that the ring would not be there when we did the search, but I promised to do the search for her none the less.

When I arrived to the park 4 days later, Megha’s Husband met me and took me out to the area of the loss. As we were walking out across the grass, about the equivalent of 4 football fields, I could see and feel that the thatch was about 4 inches thick, and was mowed long to keep the lawn healthy, so I knew how the ring disappeared so quickly. Megha was looking in the area she believed the loss occurred. We discussed how it happened, and I got ready for the search looking at a very wide expanse of grass, and thinking it might be a long search. I began, and made 3 short passes, when I got a good strong repeatable signal. I put the pin pointer in and there it was Megha’s beautiful engagement ring; she had remembered the exact spot! Needless to say she and her husband were very grateful. It was a wonderful day!
