Gold Stud Earring Lost In The Grass, Found With A Metal Detector, In Scarborough, Maine

On July 15th, I got a heartbreaking call from Emily, a local real estate agent. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ
The night before, she was playing volleyball at Memorial Park in Scarborough, Maine. ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿ“ Side note: This park is so nostalgic for meโ€”itโ€™s the site of the old Portland Twin Drive-In Theatre! ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿฟ

During a big play at the net, Emily jumped high and brushed against the mesh. ๐Ÿฅ…

In a split second, her custom earring slipped out and vanished into the thick grass. ๐ŸŒฟ

Emily and her friends searched on their hands and knees but found absolutely nothing. ๐ŸŒพ

This wasnโ€™t just any jewelry. Emily used to be a professional jeweler. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

She had designed and handcrafted this specific gold earring herself. ๐ŸŽจ

She left the park completely devastated. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Most people think metal detectors find jewelry instantly. ๐Ÿช™

But tiny stud earrings are the ultimate test of skill and gear. ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ

They contain an incredibly minute amount of precious metal. ๐Ÿค

When they fall into thick grass, they rarely lay flat. ๐ŸŒฑ

Standard detecting programs look for round, dense targets like coins or thick wedding bands. ๐Ÿช™๐Ÿ’

A vertical, microscopic gold post has an electromagnetic footprint that is almost non-existent. ๐Ÿ“‰

Standard factory programs will simply ignore it or filter it out as ground noise. ๐Ÿ”‡

To give us a fighting chance, I swapped to my agile 8″ coil. ๐Ÿ”„

I booted up the Minelab Manticore’s specialized “Gold Field” program. ๐Ÿ‘‘

This mode is engineered to sniff out tiny, low-conductive gold that other detectors miss. โœจ

Emily met me at the park at 1:30 PM, right after I got back from York. ๐Ÿš—

She had smartly marked the exact net post hole with a small tree branch. ๐ŸŒฟ

I started a tight, overlapping grid search on her side of the net. ๐Ÿฅ…

Nothing but faint iron mineralization from the soil. ๐Ÿงฑ

I crossed over to the opposing team’s side of the net and kept swinging. ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

After 5 to 6 minutes of methodical scanning… BANG! โšก

A sharp, beautifully repeatable audio signal broke through my headphones. ๐ŸŽง

Having had two complete and total knee replacements, dropping down to the ground wasn’t happening. ๐Ÿฆฟ๐Ÿฆฟ

Instead, I carefully bent over and used my handheld pinpointer to narrow down the grass blades. ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŒพ

As I slowly parted the turf with my fingers, there it wasโ€”gleaming bright yellow in the dirt! โœจ๐Ÿฅ‡

Emily spotted it at the exact same millisecond. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโญ

(If you haven’t seen her reaction yet, go watch the video Reel I posted last night!) ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘‡

She started jumping up and down with her hands in the air, celebrating wildly! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ƒ

๐Ÿ™Œ “WOW, thank you so much!” she shouted. ๐Ÿ“ฃ๐ŸŽ‰

Seeing that pure joy and relief is exactly why I do this. โค๏ธ

Honestly, I have the best job in the world, and I love my job! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ผ

Funny enough, volleyball courts have been my specialty this season!

This actually marks my third volleyball court recovery of the year. ๐ŸŽ‰

The first two were rings lost in the deep sand during intense beach volleyball games. ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ

Newlywedโ€™s Engagement Ring Lost In The Beach Sand, Found With A Metal Detector, In Ocean Park, Maine Old Orchard Beach

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

๐Ÿ’ FOUND AT THE BEACH! ๐ŸŒŠโœจ

Talk about a rollercoaster of a day for a couple of newlyweds!

On July 11th, Jen and her husband Ryanโ€”married for just one single monthโ€”were enjoying a beautiful Maine summer day on the beach in Ocean Park, Maine with 15 to 20 of their closest family and friends.

Suddenly, the unthinkable happened. Jen went to remove her engagement ring, and it ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ซ, vanishing deep into the sand somewhere in front of her. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The entire group jumped into action, searching the sand, but couldn’t find a trace of it. Thatโ€™s when someone in the crowd made the brilliant suggestion to call The Ring Finders of Maine! ๐Ÿ“ž

When the call came in, I was actually an hour away at Sebago Lake Maine , knee-deep in a water search for another lost wedding ring. I told the Ocean Park crew that Cheryl and I would head their way the second I finished.

Talk about luckโ€”just 5 minutes later, I recovered the ring at Sebago Lake!

I immediately called Jen’s group back to let them know we were on our way. I gave them two crucial pieces of advice:

When we arrived in Ocean Park an hour later, the whole group warmly greeted us. Jen showed me exactly where she was standing and the direction the ring flew.

And let me tell you, this group did a phenomenal jobโ€”they used childrenโ€™s beach toys to create a large circle around the entire hot zone! A truly brilliant move. ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

I kicked off my grid search at the top of the toy circle, working my way down toward the ocean. I finished my first pass, turned around, and started heading back toward the shore.

About 3/4 of the way back…๐๐Ž๐Ž๐Œ! I got the exact tone I was hoping for on my metal detector. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I pulled out my pinpointer, cleared the sand, and pulled out Jen’s beautiful engagement ring!

The second the ring cleared the sand, the entire beach exploded into cheering and clapping! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

The heavy tension in the air instantly evaporated, replaced by pure joy and relief.

Gold And Platinum Wedding Ring Lost In The Water Of Sebago Lake, Found With A Metal Detector, In Standish, Maine

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

๐Ÿ’ SAVED FROM SEBAGO LAKE! ๐Ÿšจ

It was supposed to be the ultimate bachelor weekend getaway.
A group of lifelong friends. A stunning waterfront lake house in Standish, Maine. Perfect weather over beautiful Sebago Lake Maine. ๐ŸŒŠ

But what happened next turned a perfect weekend into a full-blown emergencyโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ณ

โ˜€๏ธ THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED โ˜€๏ธ

Nick was out in the water enjoying Sebago Lakeโ€”tossing a football, swimming, and floating around with the guysโ€”when disaster struck.

His gold and platinum wedding ring suddenly slipped off his finger.

Before anyone could reactโ€ฆ it disappeared beneath the surface. Gone. Just like that. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

The panic set in immediately.

Imagine having to make that phone call to your wife from a bachelor party weekendโ€ฆ YIKES!!! ๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿ’ฅ Determined not to give up, the bachelor crew jumped into action.

They swam, waded, and searched the area themselves. Smartly, they even placed two large stones on the lake bed to mark the exact drop zone.

But finding a ring in waist- to chest-deep water is nearly impossible by hand.

Despite their best effortsโ€ฆ the ring was still missing.

๐Ÿ“ž โ€œWE NEED HELPโ€ฆโ€ (THIS IS WHEN WE WERE CALLED) ๐Ÿ“ž

Realizing they were running out of time, Nick contacted The Ring Finders of Maine.

Cheryl and I immediately loaded up my fully waterproof metal detecting gear and headed to Standish, Maine and Sebago Lake, Maine.

When we arrived, the guys showed us the stone markers they had placedโ€”perfect reference points.

We geared up, entered the water, and began a careful grid search.

๐ŸŽ‰ 10 MINUTES LATERโ€ฆ THIS HAPPENED ๐ŸŽ‰

I swept the detector back across the marked areaโ€ฆ

Nothing.

I adjusted slightly and continued the grid pattern.

Still nothing.

Then I turned just a bit farther leftโ€ฆ and everything changed. ๐Ÿ‘€

A clean, unmistakable signal rang out through my headphones.

I scooped the sand, swirled it in the waterโ€ฆ and there it was.

๐Ÿ’ Nickโ€™s gold and platinum wedding ring.

I lifted it high and said:

โ€œGold & platinum?โ€

The entire group erupted in cheers. The energy was unbelievable. ๐ŸŽ‰

Nickโ€™s relief said it allโ€”what started as a disaster was now a full recovery.

And best of allโ€ฆ no dreaded phone call home needed. ๐Ÿ™Œ

We have the best job in the world. We love our job.

Fatherโ€™s Gold Heirloom Wedding Ring Lost In Sebago Lake, Found With A Metal Detector, in Standish, Maine

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

๐Ÿšจ LOST HEIRLOOM ON SEBAGO LAKE! ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿ‘‰ A 56-Year-Old Fatherโ€™s Legacy, Saved From the Sand! ๐Ÿ‘‡

I received a phone call from Angela on July 8th. ๐Ÿ“ž

She and her husband, Bill, had been enjoying an absolutely gorgeous Maine summer day at Rich Memorial Beach in Standish, Maine. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

This beach is a private beach on Sebago Lake Maine, just for Standish Maine residents. I knew this beach well from a two-ring search last summer.

๐ŸŒŠ THE HEARTBREAK
Angela told me that Bill was in the water, in about three feet of water, when his wedding ring fell into the lake. ๐ŸŒŠ

Bill had felt and seen the ring falling into the water but just couldnโ€™t catch it in time. After searching the sandy area where he had been standing for over an hour, he gave up and left for home.

Angela then told me that this wedding ring is not only Billโ€™s, but that this ring was also Billโ€™s late father’s wedding ring. Bill was very concerned that the ring wouldnโ€™t be found. ๐Ÿฅบ

โฑ๏ธ RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK

WOW!!! Another family heirloom lost, and I wanted to find this badly.

It was now just after 5:00 pm. By the time I loaded up my equipment and drove the 45-50 minutes up there, I wouldnโ€™t have much time at all to search. โฑ๏ธ

Even though Bill and Angela knew the area the ring was in, it was just cutting it too close for a proper grid search before the beach closed for the day.

Rich Memorial Beach was reopening at 9:30 am in the morning. I agreed to meet them there as the beach opened and before it got busy. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ” THE SEARCH BEGINS

Cheryl and I arrived at the beach just prior to 9:30 am. Bill and Angela were already there in the parking lot. After a few pleasantries, we all went straight down to the beach.

It was another beautiful day and the beach was not crowded yet. With only 5-6 people there, it was a perfect situation to search. ๐Ÿ”

I wouldnโ€™t be bothering any of the members, and the area I needed to search wouldnโ€™t be disturbed.

If the area were full of swimmers and waders, the ring could possibly be moved to deeper water or pushed deeper into the soft sandy bottom, making a recovery more difficult.

Thankfully, we had this area of the beach to ourselves. ๐Ÿ™

As I was putting my gear on, Bill and Angela were pointing out the area where the ring should be.

I could tell by the way Bill talked about his and his father’s ring just how much this ring meant to him. The love for his father was very obvious, and even though Bill was putting up a strong front, he wanted this family heirloom back. โค๏ธ

Only one thing to do nowโ€”let’s go find this 56-year-old family heirloom ring! ๐Ÿช™

๐ŸŽง THE FIRST TARGETS

I entered Sebago Lake, and even at this early time of day, the water was very warm and comfortable. Perfect!!! โ˜€๏ธ

As I walked out to the area, I asked the couple a few questions. “Were you this far out? Were you this far over?”

I wanted to start just a little further to the north and just a foot or so deeper in the water than Bill had been. I would grid search from north to south, parallel with the shore. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

When I passed the spot Bill had been in, Bill and Angela would let me know. At that point, I would take half a step toward the shore, turn around, and then head north toward the area I started in.

The water was so very, very clear. I was hoping to see the ring on the bottom, but as we all know, once a ring is in the sand, 99% of the time you wonโ€™t see it.

As I started my first pass of the grid search, I was praying I would find this ring fast and get it back on Bill’s finger. ๐Ÿ™

I was just a few minutes into the first pass when I received my first target. It was a nice, low tone that I had hoped to hear. ๐ŸŽง

I took a scoop of sand and sifted it out, leaving many small rocks. I didnโ€™t see a ring, and actually, I didnโ€™t see any metal at all.
I rechecked the hole, and the target was gone. After searching the scoop and hole a second time, still nothing.

I surmised it was a small piece of aluminum that had made its way out of my scoop through one of the holes. That happens all the time with very small pieces of metal. ๐Ÿช™

โœจ FLASH OF GOLD!

Okay, back to the search.
I took about 2โ€“3 steps and received another target, and this one was louder. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I took a scoop of sand, and as I was sifting it out and bringing it out of the water for a look, I caught a glimpse of gold! โœจ

I now had the scoop out of the water, and I could see a gold ring!

I reached into the scoop, fumbling around the rocks, and grabbed the wedding ring. ๐Ÿคฉ

With Bill, Angela, and Cheryl on shore, I asked, โ€œDid you say it was yellow gold?โ€
I held the ring up so all could see, and Bill said, โ€œYouโ€™re the man!โ€ ๐Ÿ™Œ

WOW!!! Not even 5 minutes, and I felt great knowing Bill would be putting his and his fatherโ€™s ring back on. The stress and anxiety for Bill and Angela was now over. ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿ˜‚ A MOMENT OF PANIC?

As I was walking out of the water, I could see the big smiles on their faces. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘

When I arrived on shore, I held the ring up and said, โ€œIs that it?โ€
Bill started walking toward me, looked at the ring, and said, โ€œThat’sโ€ฆ Oh, that’s not it.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ณ

He then quickly said, as he took the ring, โ€œYeah, yeah, that’s it!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

We were all laughing at this point, and thankfully, Bill and Angela were no longer worried about this very sentimental, cherished wedding ring.

๐Ÿ’ซ THE POWER OF A STORY

The couple told Cheryl and me that when Billโ€™s father passed away many years ago, Bill received his dad’s wedding ring. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

When Bill and Angela were married 23 years ago, there was no question that Bill would wear his father’s ring to honor and show his love for his father.

I often mention that every ring has a story, and this ringโ€™s story shows a love and legacy between a father and son that, after all these years, is as strong as it has ever been. ๐Ÿ’ซ

We are so proud to be able to help people like Bill and Angela in their time of need. We have the best job in the world. We love our job. ๐Ÿค

Platinum Engagement and Wedding Rings Lost On The Beach, in York Maine, Found With A Metal Detector, at Long Sands Beach

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

๐ŸŒŠ A Race Against the Tide: The Search for Katie’s Rings ๐Ÿ’
I received the following text

*โ€œHi, my name is Katie. I found your info on Google saying you try and find people’s lost wedding rings? I lost mine today on York Beach, Maine , Long Sands right before high tide.

We tried to go look but couldn’t find it or our exact spot. Was wondering how your services work and if you might be able to help me. My husband and I have been married for almost 9 years… we walked down the horrible steps and then sat on the wet sand before high tide, in between the bad set of stairs and the ones just south of them. There’s a house across the street, its number is **, and it has little buoys that kinda look like popsicles.โ€ ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

Along with the message, Katie sent a Google map with a pin drop and GPS coordinates. Excellent.

โฑ๏ธ The 5:30 AM Game Plan
After looking at the location and the tide charts, we knew our best chance of recovery would be early in the morning on July 5th. Gary and I arrived at Long Sands Beach in York Beach, Maine at 5:30 AM. ๐ŸŒ…

With low tide at 9:31 AM, we had plenty of time to search for her wedding and engagement rings, which were soldered together. With two of us on the job, we could cover the entire area without worrying about the incoming water.

Katie had lost her platinum wedding set when she took them off to apply lotion to her children. ๐Ÿงด She placed them in the cupholder of her beach chair. As the family enjoyed their beach day, the rings slipped her mind. When they packed up, the rings fell out of the cupholder as the chair was carried away to the truck.

One big concern I had was that they had set up on the hard-packed wet sand. If the rings fell there, they wouldnโ€™t sink right away. They would sit on the surface until the tide came in and buried themโ€”meaning anyone walking by could have easily spotted them and picked them up. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

๐Ÿ” Cruising the Grid
Gary and I hit the beach as planned. Gary started up in the dry sand, working his way toward the water. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ I started on the hard-packed wet sand, working toward the shore. If we didn’t find them here, our backup plan was to search their walking path to the โ€œHorrible Stairs.โ€

The area was a little larger than I thought. Our grid search was yielding nothing but a few coins and the usual beach trashโ€”pull tabs, foil, and bottle caps. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ

As we neared the end of the section, Gary stopped so I could finish it off. He was about to move to the walking path. I didnโ€™t have a good feeling about that path because the Beach Cleaning Rake had gone through the area just before we arrived. If the rings had been there, the machine could have dragged them anywhere.

I was starting to lose hope. We were running out of real estate, and the rings were still missing. ๐Ÿ“‰ I had maybe two or three passes left before I was completely done.
* First pass: Nothing.
* Second pass: Almost finished, and then…

๐Ÿ’ฅ BANG!!! The Sound We Needed!
I received the exact target tone I had been waiting for! ๐Ÿ”Š A loud, low tone, repeatable and just 0โ€“2 inches below the surface. The Target Identification (TID) screen showed a low-conducting metal reading 18-19. Definitely platinum.

I yelled over, โ€œGary, I think I found them!โ€ ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

The target was so loud I knew it wasn’t deep. Once I used the pinpointer, I didn’t even need to dig. I could actually see the outline of the ring right through the wet sand. I brushed a little sand away with my finger, and there was Katieโ€™s precious wedding set! ๐Ÿ˜ญโœจ

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Just one more pass and we would have walked away. This is exactly why we never break a grid search. You just never know where a lost ring will be.

๐ŸŽ The Big Surprise
I took a video to surprise Katie. I started the video making it look like an unsuccessful search, only to quickly pan over to Gary with a massive smile, holding up the rings!

๐Ÿ‘‰ “Check out the video Reel on our page to see the exact moment we surprised her!!!

Within a couple of minutes, Katie called us. Hearing the pure excitement in her voice was the absolute best. She told me she and her husband Klayton were just down the road and would be right there.

Within ten minutes they arrived. Just watching her walk down the street was incredibly rewardingโ€”you could see the “bounce” in her step, and her smile said it all! ๐Ÿ˜Š

As Katie received her wedding rings back, the relief was unmistakable. The anxious voice from the night before was completely gone, and the rings went straight back onto her finger where they belonged. Life was good once again! ๐Ÿ’–

Gary and I truly have the best job in the world. We love what we do.
Remember: โ€œIf It Matters To You, It Matters To Us.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Platinum and Diamond Wedding Ring Lost In The Goose Rocks Beach Sand, Found In Kennebunkport, Maine With A Metal Detector

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

โœจ “That Was Like Magic!” โœจ How a Family’s Beach Day Was Saved by a Low Tone & a Helping Hand ๐Ÿ–๏ธโค๏ธ

As Cheryl and I were driving home from a successful ring recovery and return in York, Maine, my phone rang. ๐Ÿ“ž

The caller identified herself as Molly. She had just lost her platinum wedding ring with diamonds! ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’

Molly was at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. She had taken her ring off and placed it in her lap while applying lotion to her children and herself. ๐Ÿงด๐Ÿ–๏ธ

She forgot about the ring, stood up, and walked away toward the water. As she was walking, she suddenly remembered it! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Molly rushed back to her chair and began searching the sand, but the ring was gone. Her children and husband also searched, but came up empty. ๐Ÿ”

Realizing they might be burying the ring deeper into the sand, they wisely stopped searching to prevent making it harder to find. It was then that I was called! ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿšจ

Cheryl and I were at a red light in Biddeford, Maine, when Molly phoned. ๐Ÿšฆ I was literally at the intersection of Route 1 and the road that heads straight to Goose Rocks Beach! ๐Ÿš˜

I was closer to the beach right then than if I had gone home and had to drive back. So, I took a sharp right at the intersection and told Molly I would be there in less than 15 minutes! โฑ๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

Cheryl and I arrived in short order and were promptly met by Molly. She brought us down to where her family had set up on this 250th anniversary of our countryโ€™s independence. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ†

When we arrived, Molly showed me where she had been sitting and where the family had been searching for her wedding ring in the sand. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿงฑ

After firing the metal detector up, I did a quick scan of the area… nothing. โŒ

I moved inside the tent a little, and one of the children moved a chair out of the way, but the search still yielded nothing. Molly then showed me the path she had taken toward the water to the right of the canopy. โ›บ

After 5 minutes, there was still no wedding ring. It was now time to start moving some of the beach bags under the canopy. ๐Ÿ‘œ๐ŸŽ’

I asked Molly my usual rounds of questions:
๐Ÿ’ฌ “Was it left back at the house?”
๐Ÿ’ฌ “Have you checked the beach bags?”

Once I started back up, I searched the exact spot where a teal-colored beach bag had been sitting… ๐ŸŽ’๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

BANG!!! ๐Ÿ’ฅ
A nice, loud, low tone rang out, reading 17-18-19 on the Target Identification (TID) screen! This TID was the absolute perfect number for a woman’s platinum wedding ring. ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ’

I asked one of Mollyโ€™s children if she would like to use the pinpointer to locate the target. She happily agreed, and after a quick tutorial, she found the spot! ๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿง’

As she dug in the sand with her hand, the ring wasnโ€™t appearing. She dug deeper, and still nothing! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I said, “It canโ€™t be that deep,” and moved in to dig deeper with my hand when Mollyโ€™s husband noted, “We did move some sand around.” โณ๐Ÿงฑ

As I dug further, I felt it… and started pulling it out of the sand! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ’Ž

Mollyโ€™s daughter excitedly cried out:
๐Ÿ“ฃ “Mommyโ€™s wedding ring!”

Her husband exclaimed:
๐Ÿ“ฃ “That was down there deep!”

And her daughter added:
๐Ÿ“ฃ “That was like magic!” โœจ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Molly let out a massive, joyful laugh! ๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธ

She could finally relax with her beautiful wedding ring back safely on her finger. The stress and tension instantly lifted, replaced by smiles and laughter all around! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’ซ

With the sun shining brightly, the family could get back to enjoying their beautiful beach day in Kennebunkport. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ

This is why we do it. We love our jobsโ€”itโ€™s truly the best job in the world! ๐ŸŒโค๏ธ

Cheryl and I were just beaming after recovering our second wedding ring in the span of just two hours! To top it off, Gary had also recovered a wedding ring earlier in the morning. ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ™Œ

Three wedding rings recovered in one dayโ€”a true “triple crown” or a “three-peat” in the ring-finding business! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†

As we walked off the beach, we couldn’t help but think about what a legendary day it had already been.

It was only 2:25 PM, and little did we know… our day wasnโ€™t done just yet! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐ŸŒ…

Gold Diamond Hoop Earring Lost In The Sand, Found With A Metal Detector In Old Orchard Beach, Maine

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

๐Ÿšจ LOST GOLD & DIAMOND EARRING IN THE SAND! ๐Ÿšจ

I received a frantic text on Tuesday evening at 5:50 PM.

โ€œHello. Iโ€™m staying at the ‘On The Beach Motel’ in Old Orchard. I lost a gold hoop diamond earring… My husband gave them to me. He passed away two years ago, so this is more upsetting than it may have been otherwise. Is this something you can try to help with?โ€ ๐Ÿ’”

I immediately replied:

โ€œHi, this is Dennis from The Ring Finders of Maine. I’m on the road but will be back in the area around 6:30 PM.

Do you still have the matching earring for a photo? Small gold earrings are very difficult to find.

Do you have a specific area on the beach to search, or do you think itโ€™s in the water?โ€

She texted back:

โ€œI did step into the water. We are out getting dinner right now, but we had a beach setup and I know exactly where it was.โ€

โฑ๏ธ The Race Against Time

I texted back right away:
โ€œOk, I want to search tonight as soon as you get back. My main concern is that another detectorist might find it, or the beach-cleaning machine will scoop it up at 5:00 AM. If it gets scooped by the machine, it will be gone forever.

โ€Claire later told me that the incredible office staff at the motel were the ones who told her to call me. ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ˜ข An Emotional Plea

Through tears, Claire explained to Cheryl and me that this earring was a precious gift from her husband, who passed away two years ago.

She told us these earrings weren’t just jewelry; in a sense, they were her husband. She was physically sick not knowing where it was. ๐Ÿ’”

Her family had already torn the hotel room and the car apart. They even searched the dry sand by hand. Nothing. It had to be on the beach.

My primary mission tonight was the dry sand. We had to clear the area before the 5:00 AM beach cleaner arrived.

Alright, let’s go find this earring! ๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐ŸŽฏ

The Search Begins
Claire took us down to the exact spot where her family had set up for the day. She knew the area perfectly.

Once the boundaries were set, I started grid searching parallel to the water, moving from south to north.

Claire continued searching the dry sand by eye, constantly staring out at the ocean waves, praying it wasnโ€™t out in the deep water.

At the end of my first pass, I only found a crusty old dime.

๐Ÿช™โœจ A Shocking Low Tone

I turned around and headed south, keeping an eye on Claire as she watched the waves.

Suddenly, a loud, low tone blasted through my headphones! ๐ŸŽงJ

Just what I was hoping to hear.

The Target Identification (TID) read a solid 07. That is exactly in the small gold range.I carefully brushed the sand away, and there it was: the glittering gold earring! โœจ

๐ŸŽฌ The Setup & Surprise

Claire hadn’t noticed me finding the earring because she was still looking out toward the ocean.

I glanced over at Cheryl and mouthed, “I’ve got it, get video!” ๐Ÿคซ

With Cheryl’s video rolling, I pretended to continue searching as I walked closer to Claire.”

Can you point to exactly where you were standing in the water?”
I asked her.

As she turned toward the ocean and pointed, I held the earring up right in front of me, waiting for her to turn back around.

๐Ÿ˜ญ The Floodgates Open

It worked perfectly!

When Claire turned back to face me, she saw her beloved earring dangling right in front of her. The floodgates completely opened.๐Ÿ˜ญโค๏ธ

She walked slowly toward me, crying tears of pure happiness and relief.

As I placed the earring back into her hand, she gasped, “I can’t believe it. I really can’t believe you found it.”

She wrapped me in a massive hug, the happy tears still rolling down her face.

What an emotional return! She finally had both of her precious earrings back together. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ‘จ

Just then, her son Mickey walked onto the beach.

Claire proudly yelled to him, “He found it! Can you believe it?!

“Mickey broke into a huge smile and said, “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

๐Ÿ˜„Claire then admitted to me, “I almost didn’t call you. I thought it was gone forever.” Thankfully, she did!

๐Ÿ† The Best Job in the World

As Cheryl and I walked off the beach, Claire was proudly telling everyone around her that she got her earring back. She had the biggest smile on her face.

I truly have the best job in the world. I love my job!

Gold Wedding Ring Lost In The Soil, Found With A Metal Detector, Wells, Maine

The Ring Finders of Maine, With Recovery and Return #232

While Cheryl and I were at a Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees game in Boston, Gary Hill was watching the store back here in Maine. โšพ๏ธ

The previous day, I had received a text from Mary:
โ€œHi. My name is Mary. We live in Wells Maine. My husband lost his wedding ring while digging a patio this weekend. Are you available tomorrow? Iโ€™ve seen you on Facebook, and we met one time at Drake’s Island Beach.โ€ ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

My reply:
โ€œHi Mary, I am not available tomorrow. I am going to Boston for a Red Sox game. I do have Gary Hill covering for me if you would like him to search tomorrow. Otherwise, I could come Sunday morning. Is he sure he was wearing the ring while working on the patio? Has the area where he was digging been filled back in? My concern is that the ring may have been buried too deep for our detectors.โ€ ๐Ÿค”

Maryโ€™s reply:
โ€œWe have only dug it out. We dumped a lot of dirt and grass in the woods behind our house; Iโ€™m guessing it would be there. But our plan is to finish the patio tomorrow, so if you could give me Garyโ€™s number, I would appreciate it. Enjoy the Sox!โ€

I gave Garyโ€™s contact information to Mary, and once they talked, they made plans to meet the next morning at 8:00 AM. โฑ๏ธ

Gary arrived right on time, and he brought along a special helperโ€”his 8-year-old grandson, Rowan, who was visiting his grandparents from South Carolina! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Mary and her husband, Paul, showed Gary the two locations where they thought the gold wedding ring might be: the patio excavation site and the dirt pile in the woods. ๐Ÿชต

Everyone figured the woods was the most likely spot, but Gary decided to sweep the patio site first just to rule it out. It was only about a 15โ€™ x 15โ€™ area, and Gary figured it would take just 10 minutes.

THEN, THE DETECTOR WENT OFF… ๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ’ฅ

Just 5 minutes into the search, Gary got his first target! Rowan was on duty as the official pinpointer operator today. ๐Ÿงญ

As Rowan stuck the pinpointer into the soil, he pulled out a piece of aluminum.

But as any good metal detectorist knows, you always check the hole twice! Gary told Rowan to recheck the area. Rowan placed the pinpointer back in the dirt, and it went off again! There was another target hiding right underneath! ๐Ÿšจ

As Rowan carefully brushed away the dirt, a glint of gold caught their eyes. It was a gold wedding ringโ€”Paul’s ring! ๐Ÿฅนโœจ

INCREDIBLE!!! Gary and Rowan needed less than 5 minutes to solve the mystery.
TEARS OF RELIEF ๐Ÿ˜ญโค๏ธ

When Paul saw his ring, his eyes immediately filled with tears. ๐Ÿฅน

That ring meant the world to him, and he truly believed it was gone forever. The sudden wave of relief was overwhelming. Paul and Mary wrapped Gary and Rowan in huge hugs, and the stress completely melted away.

Another ring back on the finger where it belongs! ๐Ÿ’

A huge congratulations to 8-year-old Rowan on his amazing work today. He did an outstanding job and has officially earned his title as a “Ring Finder!” ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŽ‰

1948 High School Class Ring, found with a Metal Detector, in Maine, returned to family, after 3/4 of a Century

  • from Old Orchard Beach (Maine, United States)

Back in 2013, I found a 1948 SJHS High School Class Ring, while Metal Detecting, in the ocean, in Old Orchard Beach Maine.

I knew of a St Josephโ€™s High School (SJHS), in Biddeford, Maine, which closed, back in the 1960โ€™s. I wanted to return the ring, but trips to local libraries and an email to an Alumni Association for St Louis and St Josephโ€™s High School, all came up empty. Online searches also yielded no clues. I soon found out there were hundreds of SJHS high schools across New England, Mid Atlantic States, Canada and the rest of the U.S.. Old Orchard Beach is a summer resort town in Maine with 100โ€™s of thousands of tourists from all over, every year and the ring was approximately 65 years old, when I found it. . How would I ever find and verify, which school, the ring came from? Could the SJHS be a St Josephโ€™s, St Johnโ€™s, St James, etc..? After researching, on and off for 1 1/2 years or so, with no results, I put the ring into my safe and forgot about it .

Fast forward to February 9th, 2024. I found another class ring, while metal detecting, in Old Orchard Beach, after some recent winter storms. This was a 1982 Billerica Memorial High School class ring, from Billerica, Massachusetts. I knew that this should be an easy find and return ring, but thatโ€™s another story, for another day. But, finding the 1982 Billerica ring, jogged my memory of the 1948 ring, in the safe. I thought I would give it another go and see if there was anything new online, to help identify the school, from which the ring came.

I posted the ring on many Facebook Pages, including Class Rings – Lost and Found and St Louis High School Biddeford Maine. The Class Ring Facebook Page has an incredible research team that without hesitation, started to help me locate the correct school. The research team, includes employees of Jostenโ€™s, the rings manufacturer. Jostenโ€™s found the 1948 blueprint for the ring, in approximately 1 week. The ring was absolutely from St Josephโ€™s High School, Biddeford, Maine. The now closed school is approximately 6 miles, from where I found the ring, in the ocean.

While Jostenโ€™s was researching the ring, Chuck, the administrator for The St Louis Facebook Page, forwarded me a newspaper photo of the 1948 St Josephโ€™s Graduating Class, of 19 women. The initials RGH, engraved on the inside of the ring, matched one young woman and I just knew it had to be hers. Her name is Rita and

I performed an online search, but unfortunately, I found Ritaโ€™s obituary, from 2021, just 3 years prior. I was able to contact one of her children, Mary Ann, mentioned in the obituary and she lives only 3 miles from me. Mary Ann answered all my questions about her mother, and they matched exactly, with all the facts I had. Her mother had graduated in 1948, from St Josephโ€™s High School, in Biddeford, Maine. Her motherโ€™s middle name, starts with a G and ended with a H, just like the ring. Mary Ann told me she was very surprised and excited and couldnโ€™t wait to call her other siblings. Mary Ann told me she would call me back and set up a time, where I could return her motherโ€™s ring and some of her siblings, could also be there. When she called back, we made Saturday, March 9th the date to return the ring.

I met 4 of Ritaโ€™s 7 children, at their motherโ€™s and their childhood home. Mary Ann, Joan, Kevin and Michael were there to greet me and were very excited and happy to see their motherโ€™s high school ring, which none of them had ever seen, before today. After all, the ring has been miss for approximately 3/4 of a century. The siblings related the story that their mother had lost her ring, in her late teens or early 20โ€™s, most likely between 1948 and 1952. Their mother had told them about losing her ring, way back then and wasnโ€™t even sure where she had lost it.

It is such a privilege to be able to reunite such a precious piece of someoneโ€™s life, to their family. There is no better feeling, than returning rings like Ritaโ€™s, to family members that will cherish it forever. Although Rita is no longer here, with them, the siblings all felt her there today.
