𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒: You feel your wedding ring slip. You watch it shoot like a rocket straight into the soft, dry beach sand. In a split second, it completely vanishes. 😱 What would you do? Drop a comment below if you’ve ever lost something precious in the sand! 👇
That is exactly the nightmare Dave faced on Drakes Island Beach in Wells Maine.
🏖️ 𝐀 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫
It was the end of a perfect 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲. Dave, his wife Leanne, and their friends Deb and Kenny had spent the day soaking up the sun and enjoying the holiday. But as the sun began to set and the group started packing up, disaster struck. Dave was wrestling with two large beach umbrellas, pulling them out of the deep sand. As he tugged, his Tungsten wedding ring caught, slipped right off his finger, and shot off into the beach environment.
Dave felt the terrifying sensation of the metal leaving his skin. He knew it flew forward—somewhere in front of him—but they were high up in the dry sand, nowhere near the ocean water. The loose, dry sand meant the ring instantly buried itself the moment it landed, leaving absolutely no impact crater or trace behind. Just like that, a symbol of commitment was completely swallowed by the beach.

Dave was quick to start searching, and the whole group immediately dropped to their knees. They painstakingly ran their fingers through the powdery sand, hoping for that metallic touch, but had no luck. As darkness fell, the four of them left the beach dejected, but not defeated.
They all came back the next day, and this time they brought backup: rakes. They spent hours carefully sifting and running the rakes through the dry sand, but day two ended without Dave’s ring back on his finger.
By day three, the group was right back at the beach, searching once again. Dave and Leanne were desperate to find his wedding ring, but despite all their grueling effort, day three ended with the exact same result—no success.
It was at this point, later that evening, that Leanne heard about my services and 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝒑𝒖𝒏 𝒂𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅!). She explained that they had been searching relentlessly for three days. Even though the beach had refused to give it up so far, they felt deep down that the wedding ring was still out there, and they wanted to do everything humanly possible to find it.

So on Thursday morning—now more than 60 long hours after Dave’s wedding ring was swallowed up by the sand—we met promptly at 8:00 AM.
The dedication of this group was unmatched; all four of them were there waiting for me. They walked me down the beach to the location, confident in their bearings. They had memorized the exact spot by using a specific landmark: a distinct rock on the nearby jetty.
Before turning on the machine, I had Dave reenact the entire scene. I needed to see his exact body positioning and the direction he was facing while he wrestled those umbrellas down. The group was convinced the ring would be fairly close to where Dave had been standing when it launched off his finger.
With the layout of the land clear, I formulated a game plan. I decided to perform a meticulous grid search running parallel with the jetty, rather than the water line. Tracking this way allowed me to easily keep my eye on their landmark rock and stay perfectly oriented. I mapped out the starting point just a few feet behind the spot where Dave had been standing, planning to sweep east to west, heading directly towards the jetty.
With the grid established, it was time. Let’s go find a ring. 🧭

But Drakes Island, Maine wasn’t giving up its secrets easily. The sand was clean, offering very few targets. After making a few systematic grid passes, my machine had only beeped three times—and all three targets turned out to be nothing but trash.
As I completed a few more grid passes, I could feel the tension rising. The group was getting incredibly nervous. They truly believed the ring should have been in the exact area I had already cleanly passed through. You could see the unspoken fear in their eyes: Had another metal detectorist already walked by and found it over the last three days?
Sensing their anxiety, I stopped to reassure them. I explained my process and why staying the course mattered. I don’t like breaking a grid pattern once started. I need to know exactly where I have searched and where I haven’t. Jumping from one area to another is simply not efficient, and it risks missing the target entirely.
I let the group know the plan: I was going to finish this current grid pattern all the way to the rocks of the jetty. If the wedding ring still hadn’t been found by then, we would methodically expand the grid to the north, east, and west, keeping the exact same discipline until we covered every possible inch.

I turned back to the grid and kept swinging. I was now entirely outside the group’s predicted “highest probability” zone and rapidly approaching the rocky edge of the jetty.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧, 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝. 💥
A loud, beautiful mid-tone erupted from my Minelab Manticore. I looked down at the screen, and the Target Identification (TID) locked onto a steady 47—a textbook conductivity number for tungsten.
The group held their breath as I pulled out my pinpointer to narrow down the target in the loose sand. I dug into the spot, shifted the dry grains away, and there it was: a perfect, heavy tungsten wedding ring. Dave’s ring. 💍
🏆 𝐀 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞 & 𝐀 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠
Dave and the group immediately broke into thunderous applause and yells of pure disbelief! 🥳 High-fives, handshakes, and relieved hugs ensued, but the group was still completely stunned by how far away the ring actually was from where they thought it would be. “𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫?” they wondered.
I pointed out a very high probability: they had likely dragged the ring outside of their search area themselves when they were using the rakes. I shared one of the golden rules of losing an item on the beach: Do not disturb the area. Raking, digging blindly, or kicking the sand can accidentally move a target yards away from its original landing zone. We’ll never know for sure if that’s exactly how it traveled, but it was a great reminder of why structured grid discipline works!
With the mystery solved, everyone stood around laughing, smiling, and celebrating the wild ordeal. Leanne then playfully chimed in, reminding Dave that she had previously told him to get that ring resized. Dave laughed and reassured her that he absolutely would now! 😂
Another precious wedding ring is back on the finger where it belongs.
I truly have the best job in the world. I love my job! ❤️
