Andrew was at Califia State Beach with his wife Allyson. He put his tungsten carbide wedding ring on his sunglass neck strap and hung them on beach umbrella for safekeeping while he went swimming. When he finished swimming, he grabbed his sunglasses and the ring went flying into the dry sand.

Totally frustrated after they searched unsuccessfully for over an hour, Allyson got out her smart phone and found my contact information on a google search for “How to find a ring in the sand.” I talked to Andrew, assuring him I could find his ring if he was able to stay at the location. I could be there in a half hour.

We met at the parking lot and walked a couple blocks to their place on the beach. It wasn’t long till I got a good signal. I gave Andrew the pleasure of digging his wedding ring. I did tell him not to drag his fingers though the sand, just use your fingers like you’re grabbing popcorn. (It’s my clam shell technique).

Jordan called to ask if I was available to search for a gold ring that he lost while attending a play day for kids that live in his neighborhood. He had been helping his daughter off a jumping apparatus when he thought his ring may have come off. It was in a grassy park with thick grass and noticed it missing as he walked to the parking lot. He went back to search with no success.
He was at work, but his wife, Catalina would be home to show me the location. I met Catalina later that morning. She was able to show me the general area, where I could see some grass had been torn up. It was a a few minutes later that I got a perfect signal amongst the bottle caps and pull tabs that turned out to be Jorden’s ring.

Mary’s husband called me the morning after she lost a white gold diamond ring in the surf at Paradise Cove near Malibu, CA. Mary was in waist deep water at a mid high tide when she was unexpectedly hit by a large wave. She felt her ring come off her finger right at that moment.
Her husband want to know if there was a chance to find it. I told him, we first needed to return to the general location. Then we had to see the sand conditions. ( The So. Cal. beaches vary from day to day ) Also our chances are better if somebody can be available to tell exactly what happened and where the loss occurred.
We agreed that Mary would meet me at Paradise Cove at 11:30am. The tide was rising which wasn’t a good thing. If necessary, I might have to return the next day at the lowest tide. First things first, meet the person that lost it, get the general location and give it a try with my CTX 3030 metal detector.
Everything went like clock work as we met on the beach. Mary told me that she had worn this ring for 10 years and it meant the world to her. She paced back and forth helpless on the upper sand watching me each time I dug a pull tab, etc. In my mind I was planning a return trip for the next day. Then the 12-07 reading on my CTX ID screen and a definite tone to match. I knew the ring would be in this scoop. Yes! Mary’s white gold diamond wedding ring. It was halfway up in the wet sand and must have been thrown forward as the wave hit her from her backside.
Where, how and when didn’t matter now. What was important, is the fact that all our efforts worked to get Mary’s rearing back where it belongs and the story of her ring goes on. I don’t get tired of doing this when I see how grateful Mary was. A sight to remember.

I woke up to find an email from Katelyn whose husband had lost his Tungsten Carbide wedding ring at Huntington Beach three days before. She wanted to know if I had found a tungsten ring recently.
I sent her a reply and asked her to call me if she was interested in me searching for the ring.
When she called I told her that this beach is heavily hunted with detectors and the beach cleaning machines are very efficient. I would still be willing to go if I could get her husband Casey to give me details of where and how the loss occurred.
Casey called explaining that he had put his ring in one of his shoes for safe keeping while he went swimming. When he got back to his towel which was near lifeguard tower number 3 at Huntington City Beach. (heavily searched everyday by detectorists)
He picked up his shoes and walked 100 yards to the wall near the pedestrian/ bicycle path. That’s where he checked his shoes, discovering that his ring was missing.
I told him as honestly as a could that our chances were not the best but I was close to the location and I would give it a try. I understood his directions so it wouldn’t be necessary for him to drive 50 miles to show me the area.
When I got to the beach I could see that they were preparing for a big surfing event. There were materials on the beach for building bleachers, etc. This was in our favor because the beach cleaning machines could not sift close to the materials. I grid search most of a football field size area from the lifeguard tower #3 to the wall when I got a signal that turned out to be Casey’s ring. What a surprise for me and anybody else that knows this beach. Rule of the day… “You can’t find it if you don’t TRY.”

Called Casey with the good news. He could not drive to Huntington Beach from Yucaipa,CA. So we agreed that I send it by mail which only took two days. Casey sent me the photo of himself and Katelyn just after they received the ring. I’m learning everyday to stay positive on these searches, it’s not easy if you think you know everything. I’ve been checking my emails more often than usual, because more inquiries about TheRingFinders service have been coming to me through emails. Most of them seem to be written late at night or early am hours. Most likely because they are not able to sleep thinking about their loss.
Lisa had emailed me asking if I could help her and her husband Logan find a gold wedding ring lost at Stand Beach, Dana Point, CA.
It was lost the day before at high tide in knee deep water while throwing a football. He felt the ring come off his finger the moment it happened.
I get excited with this kind of story because it can be a successful search if the sand is not too mushy. We need to get close to the general location which sometimes can be a problem.
I talked to Logan on the phone and he told me it was just south of the last lifeguard stand and he could see a large blue tarp covering a fence on the slope directly in front of where he lost the ring.
I arrived a half hour before Logan and Lisa, at low tide the next morning. The wet sand conditions were perfect, not too soft. Walking down the beach I found the landmarks Logan gave me. It didn’t take long and I had the ring in my scoop. Twenty minutes later they walked up to me on the beach. I asked them a question about what type metal the ring was then held the ring up for them to see. I got a call from Indy who was standing on the beach at 38th Street, Newport Beach, CA. He had been searching the sand for an heirloom ring that had been given to him by his grandfather. A unique ring made of rose gold, white gold and yellow gold. It had fallen out of his backpack where he had put it for safekeeping while he surfed that morning. Somebody on the beach saw him searching and told him about TheRingFinders website.
Indy is one of our local Newport Beach surfers who is on the beach every day in the summer. He was very courteous on the phone explaining he didn’t have much money. I told him it doesn’t matter, I will be there in 20 minutes, just don’t bury it any deeper in the sand. I could find it if he can stay in the area till I get there.
It did take awhile to find parking but after walking onto the beach, Indy showed me where he had laid his backpack. These are the easiest searches so it was seconds till I had his ring in the scoop. This ring meant a lot to him, I could tell by the look of relief on his face.

Megan called asking my help finding a gold pendant that had been lost in the sand at Salt Creek Beach. Share had been at the beach that afternoon with her nieces. Towards the end of the day she felt her gold chain dangling from her neck with the clasp open. A gold pendant that had been gifted to her by her mother was missing. This was a gift that was purchased in the Far East and was symbolic for Megan’s name.

She thought we could meet the next morning but I convinced her that she could sleep better if we could find it tonight. The area she believed it to be was less than 40’x40′. That would take a half hour or less. Megan said, she could be there with her uncle and aunt to meet me at 9pm.

It’s about 4 or 5 blocks down to location. She was having a slight difficulty finding the exact spot because the tide had risen and it was dark. I started to grid search when another detectorist came out of the darkness asking if we had lost something. He acted a little strange and seemed like he wanted to help. I did not need another detector interfering with my detector in such close quarters. I told him I could handle the search and if we needed him we would ask him later.

At the end of an hour unsuccessful searching I was beginning to think that the other detector guy may have found the gold pendant and didn’t tell us. It’s hard to search when your mind keeps trying to discourage you. I moved closer towards the incoming tide just at the edge of the damp sand when I got a nice gold tone that proved to be Megan’s pendant.

Everybody was on edge because we were running out of places to search. They had even quit watching me. So it was easy to not give away that I had found it. I walked up to Megan asking her to look into my scoop. She yelled, you found it and immediately broke out in tears of gratitude. This special gift from her mother was back where it belongs. It took a little longer than I thought but everybody slept well that night including me.
I probably should apologize to that other detectorist for thinking that he may have already found it and didn’t tell us.

Robert called, asking if I was available to help him find a silver cross in the sand at Victoria Beach, South Laguna. This was a sentimental keepsake that his wife had for many years and she was devastated with the thought that she would never see it again.

He could not meet me at the location as he had a meeting that next morning. For me it was not necessary for Robert to be there. His description of where they had been was clear and would be easy to find. All I had to do was be there early enough to beat any other detectorists to the beach. Besides I know there is a missing silver cross and nobody else knows that.

As I suspected, I reached the area to the right of the lifeguard tower and began my grid. Three passes and Boom! Robert’s wife’s cross in the scoop. Called Robert with the good news. Robert me met a few hours later picking up the cross and telling me that he was going to surprise his wife when he got home. I wish I could have seen that. Another fun search with a happy couple that I enjoyed helping.
