Lots of my Ring Finder stories start off with a very detailed description of how the ring was lost and how the person got in touch with me. However, this story is quite different from all of the rest of my stories. I was just finishing up a birthday celebration for my daughter when a gentleman called me and asked if I could help him find his lost ring on Sander’s beach in Idaho. The interesting thing was that I’m normally not in Idaho, I’m normally in Washington, but on this very day I was in Idaho. The other fact was that I didn’t have my metal detecting gear with me. This fact was also out of the norm, but what made it even more unusual was that the gentleman bought a metal detector and had it at the beach. The story takes another turn when he tells me that he must leave soon and he will leave the detector at the beach for me to use when I get there. So, after gathering up my family and pulling up the google map I was on my way to Sander’s beach. I found a parking spot right by the beach, which never happens. I rushed down to the beach and looked by the tree where the detector was stashed. To my surprise the detector was sitting right where the gentleman left it. The gentleman had taken the detector apart; my guess was to prevent it from being stolen. After I put it together, it worked. The detector was simple with an analog gauge and gave only one sound. This didn’t faze me; I bent over and started swinging the kid size detector over the sand. Within two or three swipes into my hunt I got a signal. I pushed the sand with my foot, and the signal moved with the pile. So, grabbing handfuls of sand, I passed my hand over the coil. On the third handful I saw the rim of the gentleman’s ring peeking out of the pile. I found his ring in minutes. After calling the gentleman I took the ring to his house and left it and the detector on his porch. During the ride home back to Washington I kept shaking my head in disbelief. How many searches have I gone on with the top-of-the-line detectors, spending hours searching and researching with no luck. Remember this, it doesn’t matter what detector you have; you won’t find anything if your coil doesn’t pass over it.
